Yes Derek you need to wait  &&

There will be another HUGE AP first towards the middle of the year, actually it will be a World first - no hints - you guys will have to wait until then, nothing to do with the Pinball Expo!

Here you go!

Hi All

My name is Rian Gledson, I am a pinball collector and enthusiast who apart from collecting, enjoys playing, tinkering with and restoring pinball machines. I tend to favour the latest games however have a passion for the older ones as well. I would have spoken to quite a few of you and purchased numerous parts and games over the past few years. I have been motivated for quite a while now to hold that special event where we can all come together (and as Shalhoub says in all his books (Pinball Compendium)) 'Help Keep the Pinball Dream Alive'.

The idea to hold a Pinball Expo was born last year, and to ensure the dream could become a reality, I contacted Michael Shalhoub, who has written four books on pinballs (Pinball compendium) and Jason Douglas (Pinball Mania) to help me organise and fund this event.

This will be a great moment for pinballs!!

For those of you who have similar memories to me, of the old days, playing pinballs in the old caravan parks we used to visit while on holidays, at movie theatres and amusement centres. You will understand my desire to help re-ignite the flame we all experienced growing up. Hosting the first Pinball Expo in Australia I hope to cover all aspects with those who are helping keep the industry alive in Australia today.

I have contacted you as I feel you are playing an important role in the Amusement industry and will share my passion for this event. For those of you that don’t specialize in pinball machines, I feel that your products are just as important as they compliment the pinball machine and add extra fun to the environment that they are in. I have hired the Petersham Town Hall , (very close to the Sydney CBD) which will provide a great atmosphere to give that special feeling of the good old days. I have attached a map of the internal layout for your perusal. In addition to this we will be having an auction on the Sunday, as well as a Pinball Competition where we will crown a Champion; I am working on giving away a Pinball Machine as the first prize. I have asked Roger from Z-Ball who has held numerous Pinball Competitions here in Sydney to help me with this event.

Additionally we have hired a publicist to ensure that we get it out to the public in numerous forms of media. At this Expo you will be able to set up a store promoting your business and selling various items, parts etc. For this I would ask for a small fee of $500 to help cover the venue and advertising. I’m hoping to get this on TV for the best results. A web site has been created www.pinballexpo.com.au where your business can be promoted as part of the event.

The dates for the Pinball Expo will be Saturday the 9th May to Sunday 10th May, with you able to set up your stall anytime Friday morning. For interstate people coming to this event I can help with storage.

Could you please let me know if you would be interested in being involved in this event by the 3rd February, 2009? If you have any questions or need to find out more details please feel free to call me on  0412 633 727

Our aim is to have this each year to keep people excited and interested in pinball. I hope that we may be able to get some speakers from overseas next year.

Kind Regards,

Rian Gledson

To my knowledge, Michaels only daughter would currently be about 16-20 years old.
Married?
Pretty rare in this day and age.

Lets keep this thread in the right direction, regardless of who is doing what and who knows who.
At least there is a group of guys who appear to be willing to  have a go at putting something on for all of US.
How good is that. $%$

If theres more to it in the background, so be it, but you know what......the opportunity for a LOT of us to meet up for the first time in one spot with ( hopefully ) a load of decent pins to play, discuss and criticise ( the gameplay not the condition ) and just enjoy and learn stuff has NEVER been presented in this country in such a fashion.

I personally dont expect a lot form ANY first time event ( in any hobby/ industry ) but if this starts and then becomes a yearly event I am sure it could grow into something special which we can all enjoy. I dont really care if there is some type of auction there on Sunday afternoon, I dont care if they have hot chips for sale instead of roast lamb dinners, I wouldnt care if a speech was made and the microphone failed etc etc etc - it should be just a great opportunity to highlight this fading game.

I will be there regardless.

Ryan from AA is also involved in organsing this.
Title: Re: Sydney Pinball Expo 2009
Post by: Retropin on January 23, 2009, 08:20:57 PM
Tony's right.

all that matter is theres a pinball expo on. we know about it and we will go.

There is another being organised by another Ryan - please note the difference in spelling and please note that the 2 are not linked - in other words there are 2 being organised - this one though being THE major one

Title: Re: Sydney Pinball Expo 2009
Post by: Retropin on January 23, 2009, 08:32:26 PM
They are getting mixed up - 2 Rians.. 1 spelt with an 'I"the other with a 'Y" - the 2 are not linked.
I clarified this with RIAN this morning on the phone
Title: Re: Sydney Pinball Expo 2009
Post by: Extra Ball on January 23, 2009, 08:32:53 PM
one and the same I believe
Title: Re: Sydney Pinball Expo 2009
Post by: Retropin on January 23, 2009, 08:44:36 PM
????
I cant stop speculation. I also cannot stop people believing what they want to.
However, i am trying desperately here to stop this thread from going downhill very fast.

Allow me to explain again..

the 2 people are not the same person.

RIAN is not a member of ANY forum. I invited him to join this one as it is 100% positive - he seemed genuinely interested.

If this thread continues to go the way it is then  my promise of 100% positivity is going to be untrue.

Keep it straight fellas please?
Title: Re: Sydney Pinball Expo 2009
Post by: Strangeways on January 23, 2009, 08:45:35 PM
They appear to be unrelated events.

This thread is for the "Big" Expo organized by Rian Gledson.

Not related to whatever the other meet is.

There is another being organised by another Ryan - please note the difference in spelling and please note that the 2 are not linked - in other words there are 2 being organised - this one though being THE major one

Are you sure about that? I am led to believe there is only 1 Expo being organised, in Sydney in May.

Ryan's post from AA:

Tony,

Your quick on the draw! lol

I was going to make a post 2 mins ago about this but you beat me too it. Sorry i temp removed and then checked with Rian and then removed his number etc.

I am moving this to the news section and will make it a sticky thread.

Everyone,

Aussie Arcade will be supporting this event and I will be assisting with organising it.

Glad its back on track, we should all be getting behind this sort of thing and keeping our love for this hobby alive.

Melbourne Guys, whose flying and whos driving?  Do you wish to organise accomodation at the same place?  What about an AP get together on Saturday night?

Only 105 more sleeps! <.>

Dean, if you don't want to come in the Mirthmobile, fine, but stop trying to get people on the plane with you!

Brad Pitt I will come in the Mirthmobile only if you set up a generator in the trailer and I ride in the trailer on the way up so I can play Coconut Island *%*  That will leave you room for 12 others in the car :lol

You are more than welcome Dean, in fact Angie is just collecting up the extension leads. Don't have a generator but I think I can get the lead long enough. Tell you what, we'll tie it to your ankle near the end so you can sing out when  it nearly runs out. Good idea?

Title: Re: Sydney Pinball Expo 2009 Thread Fixed
Post by: Strangeways on January 24, 2009, 12:21:25 PM
Almost 9000 thread before the first "brain explosion" on AP. We have all been civil up to this stage, but there have been too many concerns about the direction the thread is heading, so it has been cleaned up. I've deleted posts that don't belong on this forum, and responses quoting the said posts (including Admin posts).

There is a little too much speculation going on around this event, and not all the facts are on the table. Until then, lets keep the thread on track !

Two points have been made clear to me over the last 24 hours from three different sources;

Rian Gledson is not related to Michael Shalhoub

The "Pinball Expo 2009", is being organized by Rian Gledson (No other Rian or Ryan)

AP representation will be from Restopin (Gavin), with his Restoration Stall, PSP (markC) and there will be more news as the dust settles. Pinball Enthusiasts from right around Australia should participate and promote this event.

A "friendly" reminder - This thread is about the Pinball Expo.

It should have a topper, similar to Fish Tales.  This one shoud be a Coconut Tree and when you get a free game as the "CRACK" sounds a coconut falls from the tree. #*#

Sorry guys, already has a topper. It's cool too - in certain modes there grass "streamers" that flutter off the back (little system controlled fan).

I was just a general statement, Matt.

There was a fair bit of info going back and forth that I deleted, but I know what you mean.

There are no rules against that - it is more or less the "content" that can cause issues, not the action of quoting.

Hope that clears up any concerns

Matt, sorry if my post sounded abrupt or rude. I wrote it in a hurry but now that I have a moment I would like to explain.

It's quite obvious that a lot of misinformation has been bandied about this proposed expo. Most of the misinformation has come from outside Aussie Pinball so adding that info here only adds fuel to the fire. All I'm saying is let the people in the know release the information and let's not get too worried about what's happening with expo until all the details are released. Let's just be happy that it's going to happen. Yippee!  #*#  #*#  #*#

whoever is talking to RIan (tony, gav, nino?) might want to get him to scope the power capabilities of this hall. nothing sucks juice like a big line up of pins, deep friers, and the other gear on show and it would be a bummer if the circuits couldn't cope. i'm not sure a community hall will be big enough to handle the load and better to get is sorted in advance. a generator or 2 could provide load management and/or boost. its great to see that this event might get all of the pinball ppl in the same spot and it would be great to see it become an annual event. it might get a few more people into the hobby which we all know is a good thing. looking forward to meeting some of you 'southerners'. ^^^

not sure it will be a problem as the only pins going / for sale are the auction ones ? , not sure if these will be on during the expo , or they are in a different part ?  maybe Tony can confirm this. unsure what % of the hall will be auction pins to , stalls  with parts and goods for sale ?? the auction is Sunday afternoon ( mother’s day)   I am guessing so they will have to be viewed before the auction , I am unsure how many stalls there are  going to be .  and what sizes ???

I will call Rain later myself to ask a few more  questions I have , before i deciede  on a stall
also re insurance and security  and what times are the expo and when does the auction start on Sunday

also it would be Pinballspareparts going  NOT Child Amusements
for emails re Pins  I wont be taking any as per the auction on sunday, as  requested
maybe a top end pin for show only from my personal collection  that wont be for sale

Yes there will be pinballs being supplied other than the ones for auction.

Michael has told Rian he will supply 15 pins for the Expo just to be played (not for sale etc.). There will be other guys bringing pins along to play for everybody

I'm thinking of dragging up 2 of mine - Universe from 1958 and Bowling Queen from 1964

I couldn't be more happier that this expo is going ahead and a big congrats to Rian and the crew for making it come alive,

However in saying that.....is it just me.........don't you guys think this hall is to small for a pinball expo...  !@# !@#

I've been to many 'collectable' town hall sales/meets/expos, in town halls with similar dimensions as this one and man they were a joke...

over crowded and REALLY REALLY tight, hard pressed for room.

Pinball machines are alot larger than the collectables !
Title: Re: Sydney Pinball Expo 2009
Post by: pinfan2 on January 27, 2009, 10:37:52 AM
 Hi All

As you have probably seen I am attempting to put on the first pinball expo in Australia. I am hosting this event to ensure that pinball stays alive in Australia and hopefully to convert others to the hobby, while providing all of you with the chance to get together and share the love of pinball. This event will be a great opportunity for everyone who is as passionate about pinball as I am, to get together, play and talk pinball.

While I am well aware that there is some conflict within the industry, I have no bias towards anyone. Thus, this post will be put on both forums.

My aim for the event is simply to get as many people to this great event as possible to enjoy pinball.  I believe that this event will enable businesses to promote their products and services. As well as encouraging new hobbyists, through exposure to the machines and for those in the industry and private collectors, such as yourselves, who share my passion.

I have sought assistance from those within the industry and have contacted Michael Shalhoub and Jason Douglas as they have been in the industry for years.

In addition to the day events and pinball competition I am putting on a meet and greet on Saturday night, with light supper, for a limited number of people who register (at this stage I believe we can cater for approx 300, however, exact details and information will be posted on my website, www.pinballexpo.com.au  as they become available).

As the organisation of this event is turning out to be more complex and time consuming than I anticipated (much to my wife’s disgust) it is highly unlikely that I will have a chance to follow what is happening on and communicate with you all via the forums. So I ask everyone who is interested to keep an eye on the website for details as they become available.

I sincerely wish to spread the joy and pleasure of pinball and hope that you all can share my dream and experience the expo for yourselves. With any luck this will become an annual event where the passion can live on and be shared.

Thanks for your interest and support.

 “Lets Keep the Dream Alive”!!!!

Cheers Rian

Welcome to the site, Rian.

As you have probably noticed, one of our resident artists has already created an EXPO 2009 Banner for our Site which we might run until the Expos starts  ^^^

Thanks for taking the time to post on the forums, and I speak for all our members in offering our full support for this event.

You will notice we have had nearly 1000 hits on the Expo - so the word is out there.

As the other guys mentioned if there is anything you need a hand in just ask.

I presume people will be able to bring machines along, with prior consent from the organisers, for visitors to enjoy and play and buy if the owner of a pin decides to sell? I think that the expo will attract a good crowd and assume that there will be at least 60 to 100 pins on display and powered up. Would be great to know a few more details, I am definately planning to go.

Well there has been this big storm about an expo ( which i am also excited about ) without hardly any details with its release.

I for one would like to know the basics like..

Whats the entry fee ?

What time does it open on the opening Saturday ?

Who will be there re; sponsors/retailers ?

How many machines will be set up to play ? ( estimate of course )

What time on Sunday will the auction be ?

What are the viewing times for the auction ?

How many machines in the auction ?  ( estimate of course )

The way i see it is if you have gone through the effort of organising the INAUGUARAL Pinball expo to the likes of this ( already an explosion of collectors and interested parties in wanting to book/make plans to go to Sydney) then i believe that these basic questions should have been covered and given with the news when it was first 'broken'.

Don't get me wrong there is nothing i want more than for this expo to go ahead and i commend Rian for having to the balls to do it but as i mentioned above.. Lack of details is a killer !  ^&^

I have been frequenting the expo site and there are no details there either.   (((

Do we just stand in the dark and wait ?  !!!

I hate to be the pessimist here but May is only 3 months away and with another blink of the eye it will be christmas.

This is typical of the bloody pinball hobby !  :D @@^  @@^  @@^

Is there a real need to know right now? Isn't it enough to know there will be an expo on the 9th and 10th May? Even if we found out all the fine details 1 month out from the event I think is acceptable. You have to understand the complexities involved in setting up an event like this to appreciate that the numbers cannot be calculated until all the details come together. Things like insurance costs, power capabilities of the hall, number of stalls it can hold etc. The auction I imagine will attract sellers right up until the start date. How can you know now what machines will be present?

We have just got news about this event so I guess the retailers are still working out if they will attend or not. There are a lot of unknowns still outside of Rian's control so I'm not sure he's in a position yet to give out detailed info. Be patient, it will come.

I think the idea for an Expo has really excited everyone to the point where we will be counting the sleeps shortly. There are many questions that need to be asked, but I think that there is so much logistical planning involved that it would be impossible to scope out what will be done, and what is impractical.

It is GREAT to see all the questions posted, as Rian will be reading them and I'm sure he is taking notes and what pinheads WANT to see there.

So keep the questions coming, but don't expect to have them all answered by yesterday  %.%

One thing I would suggest to everyone is do your best to bring machines for play. Any pinball shows here in the states have been successful because lots of hobbyist bring their own machines for play. Our Expo in Chicago would be almost nothing without the machines people bring. Someone actually started a show in Kalamazoo about 6 years ago and it's been more successful every year due to more people helping out and bringing machines. Because in the end people don't come to these things for seminars or dinners they come for parts and most importantly to play pinball.

I am very excited about this Expo, but with the limited details it makes booking flights & accommodation a bit of a worry. I don't need a huge amount of information, but at the moment it seems like the Expo is still touch and go. I just want to make sure the Expo is definitely happening before committing my money & time to travelling to Sydney. All of the other details (machines, sponsors, auctions etc) can be a surprise as far as I am concerned.

I understand that the logistics would be a nightmare............. I would prefer the expo to be held at a later date if it meant that we had more than 1 months notice with details before the event. Not everyone can make plans to have time off work with only a months notice. I have already spoken to some fellow vics and all of us are keen to go, just waiting on some details,as mentioned above, before we book flights and accommodation.

No details are clear yet - how big is my stall? do i have power? Where the hell am i gonna sleep when im down there? etc etc.

Everything will get sorted.....  but if you are coming from interstate then id suggest you sort out accomodation ASAP. Judging by the posts on AA - id say plenty of people have already booked flights.

Ill be driving down with Stuba and the van packed in the back - depending on the van i hire ( trust me - it works out cheaper than taking mine) we MAY have room for another QLDer to come with us - also splitting the driving 3 ways will be much more like fun. Only rule is no KISS to be played on the CD player and no Chisel...LOL!!!

OK - before I start - please note that these that are not made up, as per all the other previous Expo posts I have put up, all facts - don't listen to the negative crap floating about.

Here we go, short and sweet:

1. Rian is looking at pushing it back one week as to not to clash with Mothers Day
2. There will be a minimum of 50 pinballs set up to play
3. An electrician is being called in to see about the power set up and if any extra will be needed

I think that is all for now, if I get any more news will let you know

the power might be ok tony as they have three phase but 50 pins all being played will probably test it.
here's a bit about the venue
http://www.marrickville.nsw.gov.au/services/forhire/petershamtownhall.htm
there was a floorplan link as well but it seems broken now.
i would much prefer the week after (my sons birthday on the 8th) but moving it will be rough on those that have already organised and paid for their flights.
I haven't seen anything negative anywhere about it? few concerns that the auction might dominate the expo but i think that is a fair concern from genuine hobbyists. it would be good to model it along the lines of the US one which is very sucessful as many have mentioned (don't think they have any auctions)..maybe make the auction a side event that doesn't interfere with the exhibitors so people can choose how to spend their time most effectively and they can choose to play CI and talk to Nug rather than listen to an auctioneer. MHO anyway.

There have been auctions at the Chicago pinball expo.  They usually hold them in another room away from the main event.  I personally don't like pinball auctions but a lot of people do.  I think it is a good idea to have one, just allow people to avoid it if they want.  After all they are selling pinball machines and it is a pinball show ;-)

I would like to see people introduced to better ways of buying a pinball. Surely a large part of the reason for having an expo is to introduce new blood. Show them that a pinball machine can give years of trouble-free play and enjoyment. Buying a reco machine from a dealer at an expo would be a far better introduction to pinball ownership than an as-is machine from an auction. That and an auction will take-up space and resources that true/more enjoyable expo activities could use.

Aaaaaaah - the auction.

Hasnt this stirred up some sentiment?? Personally, i dont mind it - makes no difference to me, but there are those who take exception to auctions.

I spend most of my time in Lah Lah land and when i hear the word AUCTION im inclined to believe that some bargains are there to be had. The truth of this though is that its rarely the case and you find that reserves are put on the machines that are never made, couple this with sellers fees etc and it works out more expensive!

My only gripe with auctions is that if you have a reserve of say $2500 on a machine - its bloody obvious that that is the price you are willing to sell it for. That being the case - do us all a favour and slap a sign on it that says "FOR SALE - $2500 - NO OFFERS" and we all know where we stand and dont get frustrated with the pretence that it is for auction at highest bidders price.

Yes, that was the case when I attended one last year. No real bargains.

I remember back when I used to go to computer auctions at a clearance house in Langridge St, Collingwood. Some good bargains to be had there because the potential buyers were few. Then they discovered the internet...

The Expo will be all day Saturday from 9.00am-5.00pm and Sunday 9.00am-12.00 noon, the auction will take place then all should go for no longer than two hours, the Expo section is away from where the auction is taking place. The pinball finals will be after the auction so there is no need to pack up till late Sunday.

There will be around 70 pinballs in the auction, these are mainly from me and Jason Douglas, Michael Shalhoub is putting in 10 from his personal collection

this is what I was sent

I havent not spoken to Rian since and confirmed numbers  or if anyone else is adding pins maybe Tony can confirm this ?

2hrs, 70 pins

1 pin auctioned every 1min 42 secs - yep, can see that.

BUT!!! The million $ question........ will it hit reserve in 1min 42secs?

As always...Low reserves = pinballs sold

hold the phone! 70 pins at an auction! the web site said 3 hours on sunday and indicated expo closed whilst auction on. if sunday is an all day auction then interstaters will have to think twice won't they? me is starting to think this is all about an auction rather than an expo.....hope rian comes on and clears this up. his email marked him as an enthusiast/hobbyist?? not a bloke that was trying to flog a bunch of pins?

so.... Rian is selling 30 of his own pinballs. wow. i understand why he is keen to get this off the ground. to get rid of 30 in one hit is quite a coup. I must go back and read his first email again, all that good stuff about the hobby, and 'keepin the dream alive' as he dumps his collection. i guess thats why no-one else (as in exhibitors) is allowed to sell any, it would be silly to dilute the potential market. I understand why you might not be coming Mark. I still plan to go (on the saturday) but it bothers me that if someone else in the future plans an expo (that is not about selling 30 of their own machines) that some people might remember this one and they might not be so motivated to show. I guess everyone can judge for themselves whats good for the hobby and what isn't and what will serve to keep the dream alive.

That's a shame Mark, but I can understand your reservations. I was really excited about the expo but was a little disappointed to hear that the expo itself will only run for half a day on Sunday, so I think I will only be attending on Saturday now and will spend Sunday in Sydney instead. I am still hoping the Saturday will be a great day with the opportunity to meet both AP and AA members, that is really the reason I will be attending the event anyway. Playing pinnies would be a nice bonus.

I wont be hanging around for the Auction on Sunday at all... seen far too many pinball auctions over the years.

Saturday should be a great day for meeting and talking with fellow pinball enthusiasts, but I'll probably stay away from playing any... unless there's some there I've never played.

Can't put into words how disappointed I am with the negative slant towards this....this should be the greatest chance for pinball to come together - EVER - in Australia and all some people want to do is drag it down.

How about if your not happy with the way the Expo is being set up - just stay away, leave the rest of us to enjoy it and please keep the negative comments to yourself.

My apologies Tony, I am definitely a culprit of the negativity. I am looking forward to attending the Expo and have high hopes for it's success, I just felt a little put-off by the thought that half of the second day would be dedicated to an auction. I guess I should not have posted my thoughts and just made a decision on the day as to whether I would travel to Petersham or not. I really want the Expo to be a success and become a yearly event.

I agree, this should be put together to bring the whole pinball community together, however I dont agree with -EVER- unless it is open to the whole pinball industry, not just a few.
Why should the profits from such an event go into the pockets of only the organizers, how does that benefit the industry.

I think the negativity is coming from people feeling they have been been mislead.
This was promoted as an Expo, but with the more information that comes forward its looking as though its just a front for the Auction. A lot of people are coming from interstate at a cost.

OK, people have the choice to give the auction as miss if they choose, lets just hope that the Expo side of thing lives up to peoples expectations.

Looking forward to the expo, will be a good chance to meet. I just hope that this does become an annual event, and it is not a one off. At the end of the day it is a huge risk that the organiser is taking, one that no-one else previously has prepared to take in Australia.

Millsy,

Rian is not going to cancel it. It certainly has created a healthy discussion and people are very sceptical of auctions for good reason. BUT< the vast majority of what is posted is general excitement and anticipation about Expo. The actual negative posts are a small minority and for some reason these are the ones that we seem to remember most. But its all good, people have been burnt by auctions and i have to agree that with most auctions - the reserves are set so high that actually having an auction is a farce and its the pretence that pisses people off.

A few thousand people will walk through the door of Expo, most of which are not on any forum.

When i try to look at this objectively, it seems that everyone would like Expo to be how they envisage it, how they would do it. Fact is that they are not doing it - Rian is and he is doing it the way he wants to - after all, its his money that is funding it. The hall, the advertising etc. People have been prepared to put their money where their mouth is and that is to be applauded.

Rian knows that for every negative comment, there will be another 100 people who couldnt care less and will be there auction or no auction to have a good time.
Expo WILL be a great success theres no doubt about that.

I know the auction will be bagged right up to and after the event....but take another look at it.

This guy - RIAN is selling off his collection to pay for this - anyone else prepared to do that?

Good luck to the bloke   $&&

Collection or container.... big difference.
Dont get me wrong, I dont blame any organizer for wanting to recoup their outlay to host such an event, I just feel this should have been made clear from the onset

Burra,

First there was the announcement, then information comes through as it is formulated.

Seems to me the only way that Rian could ever have got anywhere near to keeping everyone happy ( like thats ever going to happen) was to make public absolutely EVERY piece of information from the start - you know this isnt possible. you have a concept that you commit to, its important to get that info out as soon as poss to create interest and then as the finer details are worked out they become public. No doubt everything is subject to change if necessary.

Collection or container??

I have over 20 pins in my collection - 5 of these will be up for sale - does that mean i cant say that i own them?? And that they are not actually in my collection?? Cors not.

Business is business and if Rian sees this as the best way for him to recoup the funds then that is his choice - all in all, doesnt matter one bit if anyone approves or not

for the record i don't think anybody (and i mean anybody, independent of web sites) is negative about a pinball expo, the excitement everywhere is transparent. there's a fear that its an auction masquerading as an expo and thats not unreasonable given the information that has come out to date (in this thread), however, if its only 2 hours of auction then it can't be 70 pins, more like 10 or 15 and if that's needed to cover the costs then no big deal. rian has confirmed on his faq that its only 2 hours which is a big relief for those travelling a long way. here's hoping that it takes the hobby in the right direction  *%*

Not at all, but there is a huge difference between a container pin & one from a collection.
Are you auctioning the 5 on the day as well.

Well I must apologies for part of my comments made last night….I had just read what was on AA regarding the bagging of the Expo by one individual (who is a cancer for the entire hobby and who the pinball world laughs at behind his back) and the sheep just followed. One of those sheep is also a member of AP.

So then logging back into AP there was some negative ground swell building again.

It’s all cool…..there are a few individuals that will always try to drag it down for the rest of us.

Thats the case with just about everything in life. There will always be someone rowing in the opposite direction, and you wonder why they are on the boat to start with. It is all about choice Tony, and some people are negative towards anything they are not involved with (or asked to be involved).

Ya know Tony I was apart of the committee on AA set-up to make an expo happen. I floated this idea in the chat room one nite oct last year and the guys were really enthusiastic about it. At the time we had interest from Wayne and Mark. I really do care about this, and care enough to make critical comment where I see fit. However for the sake of the hobby and industry I do wish for positive outcomes for this Expo. I have probably said my piece, and in the scheme of it all it matters not what one little pinhead thinks. The pinball community will judge this on the day, and thats about all that can be said. I did send Rian an email, I didnt expect an answer (I imagine he is very busy).
Cheers

I hope the Expo goes great but what I would like to know is...........
Who is actually exhibiting, it is their sponsors list (very light on)
or are there more people, there’s no exhibitors list.

What about the likes of Mark  C, Bumper Action, RTBB or even other
Coin op Distributors that sell pinball parts. I know that I haven’t been
contacted (and no I’m not upset that I haven’t) but I feel that the majority
of the industry has not been contacted.

The machines on display, are they the ones being auctioned ??

Just noted Expo Dinner tickets available - $25 - Ive bought mine,as they are limited, not sure if they will all sell quickly.
Just a tip on accomodation - Site advertising Hotel Mecure Accomodation for $155 on dates I think are wrong -I have decided to stay 2 nights even though Im only a 1-1/2hr away - I went to www.lastminute.com.au,put dates in,click Sydney CBD, Tick secret hotel checkbox,Adjust Budget slider $200,
Click go, Scroll down to (Secret Hotels Deal: 4* CBD Sydney Hotel - great spot for Chinatown and Darling Harbour!) - Has come up twice as being the Mecure -Central Station -my wife booked 2 weeks ago for this monday & I booked tonight for 16th/17th May - $99 per night.
Cant guarantee this -at least if the mecure doesnt come up it will be another central sydney hotel for $99.
Hope this makes sense

Will be good if some Aussie Pinball caps could be done before the Expo. I am sure that these would be well supported here. One of the banners could be used as the artwork. We could pay for them before the expo and pick them up from Gavin's stall (assuming he will be ok with this).
Sounds like Gavin's stall is going to be busy - are you going to have lockers for us to use Gavin? :lol
Title: Re: Sydney Pinball Expo 2009
Post by: ajlaird on March 29, 2009, 09:02:00 AM
A quick google says that we can get caps printed under $15; depending on who you use there are minimum order quantities (eg 50 or 100). Some places that are more expensive will allow you to order lower quantities.

I think you would go with the AUSSIEPINBALL.COM wording as per the banners - I imagine this would look quite effective as yellow on a darker colour.

If Gavin is in agreement then picking them up from his stall is a great idea - saves on the hassle of organising delivery beforehand. It would be sensible to implement some sort of basic ID check (like driver's licence).

Im not sure if he does caps - i did talk to him about it, but cant remember what the reply was!

I do know though that there are 2 ways to do this - one is to have them printed and the other is embroidered. Obviously embroidery looks much better, but most places charge to have the design put on file in the first place. When i had my work shirts done this cost $90 even though i gave them the seperate files for each colour - wont be doing that again.
Theres plenty of places around that do this - competition is stiff and so shopping around a bit pays off in the end.
Is no problem to get them done at this end - in fact would make sense if members would be picking them up from the stall as ill ship them with the rest of the goodies im taking down.
Ill make a call tomorow - i know a couple of places that do this stuff and will get a price on say 50 off embroidered and pinted.

I've already got accommodation sorted for free (staying with friends). 5 tanks at $60 per tank is $300 so even if only two of us it is $150 each, still significantly cheaper than flying + public transport to get into Sydney proper + airport parking fees. Would you be planning on leaving Friday morning?

Tickets booked with Virgin $156 so not too bad - but that definitely puts paid to any road trip! I decided to fly in reasonably early Friday morning so I can catch some of the Sydney sights or play some pinball, and I am leaving fairly early on the Monday morning. Wouldn't want to miss the end of the auction, so deferred departure until the next day.

well if your not into tshirts or caps...name tags may look out of place if there is a lot of joe publics there.

Maybe someone could make up some small stickers that could be available from the stand just to put on peoples shirts/jumper to identify that your an AP member and this would help people to meet up

Just a thought. What are others thoughts on that?

That list is getting long - let's see, 74 pins at 3 - 5 minutes each makes for a fairly lengthy auction! Even if they take two minutes each it will be a while. I should have timed the last auction I went to.

Geoff,

I'm more than happy to make up some stickers - just need a list of who is going.

Who here is staying for the dinner on Saturday night?

Also is there any word on the shirts?

You can simply meet up at our Stall - because you have to meet Nick and Nug and play Coconut Island. I think Gavin's stall will be nearby, and you can buy one of Michael Shalhoub's books from his stall.

Shirts will be done in time - Geoff can provide exact details.

Probably, mine was number 028. Fifty to the dinner is not too bad, plus a few who left it to the last few days to book might bring it to 75 or so. Maybe even 100.

Chat has been opened to the public and people are calling in discussing where they are still located in Sydney as well.

Dean,

Just got back from Expo, what a day. Reminded me of the old Alladins Castle arcade at Glenelg SA in its hey day, heaps of pinballs and people. This was a massive success and served its purpose of introducing more people to pinball.

To receive this news about the boards just tops it off. Thanks very much for your efforts, much appreciated. Also got to see my Rocky Backglass that Gavin (Retropin) restored, unbelievable quality - very happy with the finished product.

Great to put faces to names today.

This forum is a real credit to the people involved #*#

There was over 1,000 people come through the door on Saturday - what an amazing result!

Have to say also that there was alot of positive vibes, both sets of guys from both forums mixed real well.

There was no BS, just a bunch of middle age men together for a common cause  :lol

Highlights of the day (and what a long day - 12 hours!) was meeting guys from both AP and AA, having a chat with Alan Tate who was down for the day and just looking out over the sea of people (lots of kids) playing pinball and geeting to see and play CI...what an effort! That game was played ALL day and didn't miss a beat. It generated alot of interest  *%*

And lads - you should of seen Gav's Rocky backglass - OMG

There were bargains - best were N.O.S. Gottlieb EM coils....for FOUR DOLLARS each. Needless to say there is enough now in my shed to last the rest of my life  *%*

Someone else said it will be great in years to come that they attended the first Aussie pinball expo - absolutely - BUT Ive got one better I was part of the team that one the first Aussie Expo Trivia Night :D. (Thanks Tony!!)

Seriously i took this thing as meeting other pinheads and put names to faces and I got more than wich was awesome.

Kudos to the organisers and fellow pinheads that made it such a great weekend. I didnt meet everyone but theres always next time

Cheers
Jas

hey, i thoroughly enjoyed myself, always nice to put faces to names.. i picked out the furball pretty quick  <.>

It was great to have an expo at least and as others have suggested its just the first one and you need to crawl before you can walk..all a learning experience for the organisers and ourselves..im sure the feed back will be checked and improvements where possible made for (if !) the next one. My personal thoughts, for being billed an expo i think there should have been a row or two of nice 8-9/10 games on free play so as to allure and not frighten potential new interest .. i saw a couple of jaws drop when they pulled up a playfield for a look what had gone wrong .. they should have had a distinction between project/dead : pinball   -but all good.

A special thankyou to all the folk who played CI and enjoyed it, I enjoyed watching others play and general discussion, couple of shots i hadnt seen before including dans back handed right flipper up RHS backlawn from the naturestrip (yes i will appropriately award a combo score value of your choice dan   *%* had a ball get trapped under the "decellerator" ramp (rhs)  lots of learnings for me and i didnt think you all played too badly (felixthadog, fair dinkum dan - were two best players imo) ... machine survived trip home as they shut the power off and i didnt know if the HD was parked so all good .. also had a couple of youngens give the flippers a thrashing (multi flipper !)    #@#

hi score was 36 mil in the morning sometime(dont know who) and my only audit 297 plays

i have been flat out trying to get it all together and reliable so hopefully a bit more time to hang around forums and talk shop.

a very special thank you to all those involved with the CI banner that was provided this is extremely appreciated   *%*
and also to andrew who helped move the beast around and look after it when we needed some cooling (it was hot in there.. they could have chocked a couple of doors an inch or two for some flow upon reflection!

regards

Christian -

-im still looking at this banner !

I had a great time at Expo last Saturday .
Met and had a good chat to a few of the AP members  and had a few games on CI (amazing effort from all involved with creating that game) .

Regret I didn't meet more of the forum guys , but between being mesmerised with games I've never seen before, let alone played , and everyone (forum members, at least those in AP shirts) seeming to be always busy chatting to someone, it just didn't happen.
And Tony (Illawarra) .. sorry I didn't get a chance to chat with you more .
As others have said, judging by the huge turnout (by 2PM it was packed, you couldn't even squeeze down the aisles between the games) and the press in the week or 2 leading up to the event , I think it was a huge success.

I also thought it was great to see the inaugral expo held in Sydney , given that most of the pinball action seems to be in Melbourne.
Well done also to all the interstaters who were able to make the trip. I'm sure you found the effort and expense well worth it.

Lastly , as someone else said (Nug I think) , it was a shame that there wasn't more airflow .. it got really stuffy in there by about 1.30pm .. I ended up leaving about 2 cause it was just too crowded by then  . (great result for the organisers)

Thanks to everyone involved in making this event happen.  ^^^

Cheers
Dave

My Brother and I go there around 3pm on Sat. A little later than I had hoped. At 3pm it was packed but by 4pm the crowd was thinning out and it was easier to jump on machines to play. Played many interesting pinnies but for some reason I enjoyed playing the older style pinnies 70's - early 80's a tad more.

Didnt get a chance to play CI but did have a look inside. I was blown away with its quality. I'd love to see a Coconut 2 ready for the next Expo tho ;)

Didnt get much of a chance to talk to many people but had a good chat to Andrew & Matt over a few drinks in the space between when we were kicked out of the Expo to when we came back for the Dinner.

Over dinner I found out a few interesting things:-

- Still how much of a Pinbll Gumby I am when it comes to Pinball Trivia. My table crashed and burned on the Pinball questions but made up ground on the General knowledge questions.
- One of the guys I sat next to (not a AP member yet) has a Games room at work full of Pinnies and video games.
- oh and Michael Shaloub eats Pork (I guess you had to be there and watch one of his unedited pinball videos - that bit was quite amusing  :lol :lol)

Well, where do I start?

First of all, it was great to be there representing AussiePinball.com and hopefully we end up with an influx of new members. All the colour brochures went and we were well into the black and white ones by close on Sunday. On Sunday it was a bit quieter than on Saturday so had more chance to outline the benefits of joining up to a number of interested pinball owners. We also managed to sell a few T-shirts along the way.

Thanks to all who assisted in any way - T-shirts, banner, brochures, and manning the stall. Special mention to those who backed it up on the Sunday and helped out for a second day! I think it was a very positive move for the forum to be a sponsor of the Expo and having good forums can only help the industry grow as we assist and inspire people or point them in the right direction to get what they need.

Pinball machines: it was great to have close to 100 machines on the floor for people to play. Apparently there were over 1000 through the door on Saturday but I didn't hear the humbers for Sunday. In the end I didn't actually play that many games but the strongest memories for me were NBA Fastbreak (I think this one has made it on to the wishlist), Bride of Pinbot (that was an easy game - managed Grand Champion on my second go on it on the Sunday), and of course Coconut Island (although that machine didn't like me). It was sad to see Nick and Christian have to leave early but the guys put in a huge effort just to get there with a working game so hats off to them. I am not sure what plans Christian has for his source code but it provides so many possibilities for what is in the end quite a simple design on the hardware side of things.

The people: it was marvellous to be able to catch up with so many people from the forums and the wider pinball community. I met people from Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, and of course, Sydney (and Wollongong). Thanks to everyone for their friendliness, hospitality and generosity. It was fun to be chatting with like-minded people on the subject of pinball.

The dinner: good turnout, good food, interesting company, unbelievably difficult pinball trivia (but the general questions were easy), a nice little speech from Tony M (illawarra_steelers), and some interesting video footage from Michael S. The only disappointment was not hearing from Alan Tate (sp?) - I really wanted to hear about his vision for a pinball museum from the man himself, but it wasn't to be.

The auction: pretty fair prices for what was on offer. There wasn't a huge roll-up compared to the Saturday, and the buyers where not the typical "I MUST own a pinball" crowd you see down in Melbourne, so nothing got too inflated.

The stalls: Of course, Gavin was there with examples of his awe-inspiring restoration work, and his neon signs. I reckon he might have a few years of work ahead of him after the Expo, he attracted that much interest. Michael Shalhoub was of course there with his books and also spare parts and pinball manuals. Pinball Mania (Jason Douglas) supplied some pinball machines for the floor as well but I can't remember them having a stall. Capital Pinball (from Canberra, where else) brought along an Attack from Mars, a Medieval Madness and a Cactus Canyon - all of which Jose was letting people play until the AFM was sold. AMD was there with 24 and the new NBA game (and apparently they racked up some orders as well). Three Ball Wizard were there promoting their T-shirts. There was an Arcade+ stall (Sydney based company selling cocktails and uprights) and a Kartatak display (Sydney based racing kart company). And of course there was us alongside Coconut Island.

The pinball competition: run by Z Ball, this was won by someone from Dubbo (I guess there really is nothing else out there to do except practise pinball). Matt might have more details as he watched this one.

A big thanks must go to Rian for organising it along with Michael and the others who helped. It takes a lot of courage to put on an event like this, especially when your money is on the line. Overall it was a great way to bring more exposure to the game of pinball. The amount of media coverage the event got was quite impressive.

Suggestions for next time:-

1. Without trying to sound too negative, the quality of some of the machines on the floor was not great. At one stage on the Saturday it felt like 1 in 3 pinballs were down. Admittedly they were getting hammered, but some machines were obviously better than others (NBA Fastbreak never missed a beat, by the way). It is not a real good introduction to pinball to rock up to a machine only to find it doesn't work. And all the machines were supposed to be on freeplay but some still needed manual addition of credits.

2. Even though the Expo was advertised as finishing up at 5pm on the Sunday, from the auction onwards (12pm) there where no more pinball machines to play. There were a few disappointed punters who came in expecting to be able to play machines but were not able to do so (and if you read the website it sounds like you could). If there needs to be an auction next time (and maybe there doesn't need to be one) then it would be better programmed for later in the day (say 2-5pm).

Expo... what can i say that hasnt already been said? What a buzz!!!

The lead up to this for  me was just one mass of stress - i arrive at Sydney airport at 4.30pm, jump on the phone to Rian and my stuff STILL has not turned up. The offices of the transport companies shut at 5pm and if i dont get it sorted by then - its game over for me. Thanks mate - whoever you are at Northline Transport for personally delivering my box to expo after hearing why it HAD to be there - you're a life saver!

Then comes the day itself - i havent pulled out the backglasses yet as im too afraid they got broken, but they were in one piece and looking good.
I had myself, my wife to be, my son (7) step daughter (4) and a 4 month baby on my stall - the kids didnt miss a beat - had been on the go from 6am right through till 10pm and they were fantastic!
I have honestly never talked so much in my life - non stop enquiries and chat from 9am till my first sit down at 4pm. My throat is still sore from talking too much and i do like a chat, but man... i didnt expect to chat so much!

All i can say is that Expo WENT OFF! They were queuing to get in at 8.30am when i turned up to man my stall, at one point i looked up and it was chock a block with people. I gave out nearly 200 business cards - thats how popular restoration is - i could have sold everything on my stall several times over, but nothing bar the neon signs were for sale - i was just showcasing my work.
I had to laugh at one point... one guy in particular came to the stall and wanted to know why the Bally Lost World PF was on there - i told him the story and showed where the PF had been worn to bare wood and subsequently restored. Out came the glasses and then real close scrutiny, tilting his head to get good light bounce. Later he came back with his mate and both were studying my work.. then he looks up and says "theres nothing there - i cant see it, you havent done anything".
I couldnt have asked for a better compliment!

Thanks everyone that came and said hello - its so good to actually meet you all - Tony, im glad you are pleased with the work i did on your BG ( thats both Tonys!!)
I picked up a lot of playfield restoration work at Expo and had a ball.
Now that pic of me playing Police Force - well i was on my way for a pee at the time but quickly grabbed A machine while i could - any machine... after that i never really got another chance to play any.
My only gripe is a member here - Spurr - be careful of this man, he comes across as a nice bloke but then goes and buys Bank A Ball score and instruction cards with schematic for $10 and takes great delight in showing me them... lets me "look after" them for a while and then takes the damn things home with him!

Will i do the expo thing again?? ABSOLUTELY!!! Next year though, ill have restored PF's for sale - i hope to come back with nothing!!!

Biggest surprise of the Expo: finding out that my uni mate (from Newcastle uni) actually helped produce backglasses for Hankin pins - at least the FJ Holden and Orbit 1 backglasses. At the time he was a screen printer and the company he worked for was given the job!

So there you go, all the time I was friends with a living part of pinball history.

I take it that next year stall-holders will be able to bring pins to sell? Might entice some more sponsors to get involved.
