Title: Aussie Pinball Merchandising
Post by: Strangeways on March 30, 2009, 11:37:26 AM

I think it is time we "showed our colors"  *%*

The idea of this thread is for YOU GUYS to decide what direction and products we should create to promote our hobby and website. Whether is be caps, T-Shirts, Bumper Stickers etc...

I think one of the FIRST things we should do is create our AP Logo. Whether it just be a current banner, or something more simplified - I don't know ? So I think it would be a good idea if our resident artists submitted artwork on this thread, and for us less "artistic" types, to submit opinions and ideas. The more of you that contribute, the better.

Once we have a LOGO and a PRODUCT(S), we need to have them PRODUCED. So if there are any ideas there - please bring them forward - If you know someone who is in the "trade" then we can talk to them.

We would be making the products available to members to purchase through the site, as giveaways to competitions and if we have something done in time - have them available for the Expo.

I know that some of you have submitted ideas on some threads recently (Gav and Andrew) - But I not everyone may have read the great ideas you guys have already stated. So just add your thoughts HERE, and lets get the ideas going !!

Hmmm, a "map of australia-shaped playfield" surrounded with wooden railing and a shiny pinball hovering over each of the capital cities....and Oz-flag shaped flippers....

well, that's a start  #@#

I like the idea of a polo shirt, but one I raised a long time ago is to incorporate the AP logo / website into a game card for aprons.  I don't know the legalities of this but think it would be cool.   :D

Caps and shirts would be most useful. Especially if the pricing is kept reasonably cheap.

I am not a fan of bumper stickers myself and wouldn't buy them (although if I get a van or ute I just might use the one I won in a raffle :)

Title: Re: Aussie Pinball Merchandising
Post by: Strangeways on March 30, 2009, 10:32:42 PM

Polos and Caps seem to be the popular vote at the moment  ^^^

I think we should come up with a logo of some sort - even if it is just one of the banners, but I guess we have to be mindful that if they are embroidered, we need to tone the detail down.

Worth looking at stubbie holders ?

Resident artists - submit artwork when ready !
Title: Re: Aussie Pinball Merchandising
Post by: ajlaird on March 31, 2009, 01:10:44 AM
My suggestion would be to keep the logo fairly simple. I think the words Aussie Pinball or AussiePinball.com as per the banner font in yellow on a black background would look effective.

My only other suggestion (again I don't know the logistics) but AP key tag - both for house keys and pinnies?!

Great stuff Mark - Grab a quote for us - good start !

Sounds like Polos, Caps, Stubbie Holders, KeyFOBS (for machines) and KeyRINGS for house Keys could be the go !

As the ball is rolling - we need resident artists to come up with suggestions for a logo - or logos

I cannot draw to save myself but I pretty good with copy & paste. Here is my idea for the logo. The Pop Bumper needs to be more simplified and angled more from the top but at least you get the idea.

I still say we should use the font as per the banner.

I tend to agree with AJ, the logo on the 'items' should reflect what you're gonna see when you visit the site.

Keeping the text the same as the site logo lettering (which is a nice rounded-retro font anyway) is a must have!

OK - So the AP logo with the current font on the front of the shirt, and the web URL on the back ? No background - as in the artwork of Gorgar etc ?

That would keep it simple

I am unsure if I would want your face that close to my arse !!

Sorry guys, I feel a little 'guilty' for not getting onto this , I have just been superbly busy with so many other ( home) things - again.

Like most I think the simpler the better.
I like the idea of the name on the front .........and the website on the back

I believe that a pop bumper is the most instant ‘universally recognised’ symbol for pinball machines and even non-pinheads instantly recognise it. So I would suggest a pop bumper form part of the image for the front of the shirt.

I will try some things using this image as a basis - if you guys plan 'embroiding' a pattern , then it has to stay simple.

Just to throw this in the mix - there are heaps more styles of caps to choose from also. http://www.pbresource.com/pfbumper.htm

Quick 1st attempt.

The font I used for the banners really didnt look good when 'curved' for this - so I went with something similar ( a relaxed font ).

I can do this any colour - I had it as a stock white cap , filled it black and really liked it.

I did this with the front of a polo in mind, simple for embroiding.

Thoughts?

Hey Millsy - I use Photoshop , and sometimes combine it with stuff I have created in Fireworks as well.

OK, how do we get this printed on t-shirts? Any suggestions or anyone know anyone that can do it?

Let's get this thing started, expo is just around the corner.

Let's say we get a couple dozen made up in X-Large. What doesn't sell at expo can be sold here.
Title: Re: Aussie Pinball Merchandising
Post by: Wotto on April 10, 2009, 05:04:12 PM
My little bit of past experience.

I used to get Polo Shirts made up when we went away on motorbike weekends I would organise.

I would get a typical size logo on the front ( printed not embroided ) and a lot of text written on the back - ( like each persons name - up to 8 of us  - with a tag like - "gutless sack can only do 250kph" or similar )

For 8-10 shirts it would work out at about $25-$30.00 a shirt.

So whoever is going to take this by the balls and get ot rolling should firstly go to a shirt place and check todays costs and options. I found that most these places were quite used to 'joe nobody's' walking in with small order requests ( back then )

Alright - heres a few different variations of what I did - showung a few different 'common' shirt colours that are available.
I even did a beige shirt for Grandpa Mark C !!

See what the poular vote is - SOMEONE has to decide.
Personally I like the original one I did onto a white shirt - white shirts are easily available and suit everybody.
Thats just my thoughts - I aint the boss here.

Here ya go

I will show nicks idea in a seperate relpy next....

Looks good - you could make the artwork for the back into a web banner easily enough.

I vote on white or black for the T-shirts. Actually leaning towards black shirt with the white outline around the lettering, but if people vote for white I will be happy.

Nice one Geoff - I'm starting to lean towards the idea of the forum name and URL on the front. I still like the idea of the banner on the rear of the shirt.

Now should we look at the design being printed large in the centre of the shirt, or embroidered in the top corner ?

Under belly ....pot belly more like it ....just jokin Mark

printing the shirts won't take long but embroidery shirts will take longer I think.

mark said he had his in four days but i am unsure whether that was print or stitching.

Wheels are in motion - Geoff and Mark will grab some quotes with the current artwork for T-Shirts, Polos and Caps (for now) on Tuesday. Then we will either PM or set up a poll for members to grab numbers. We look like getting 25 done "off the bat". We would like them at EXPO - that's the aim.

We will have info as it comes to hand - no one will miss out !

Stay tuned - this is going to happen.

This is what is being considered by the admins at the moment.

Polo shirts with "logo" on the front where pocket would be and the other on the back.

Do other members like this or should there be more colours or different stuff?

Need some input so that they can go forward and get some quotes.

The colour is not a drama. The back is fine and looks cool. The front with the starburst popbumper cap looks odd. Like one half of a vegas dancing girls outfit. Needs to be reworked maybe just the .com tag in small writing. IMO. That needs to be changed

Title: Re: Aussie Pinball Merchandising
Post by: beaky on April 14, 2009, 11:48:43 AM
yep that looks better
number 3 is the best
second from the bottom

also the missus sugested having a set of colors for a female to wear
she likes the logo but said the colors would suit a male not female.
keep these colors for the male version but make another set for the female version.

if all you guys ask your better halves what they think about male and female colors and see if they agree.
i mean it all comes down to cost and how many would buy the female version.
if there are not enough requests for female colors then no use making them.

this is only a suggestion .
keep up the good work

This design , with flippers, looks the best so far.

I actually like the last one - Reason = in the one 2nd from bottom ..... I ask you - Is it TOO much 'Aussie Pinball"  ( it just tends to read.....Aussie Pinball ......  Aussie Pinball Forum ......Aussie Pinball.com )

Also -  The text in the right FLIPPER appears smaller than in the left?

Nearly there !!

I think the first run would be these colours because we are in hurry and want to get them ready for sydney

We can look at other colours after the initial run.

Hi All,
Just catching up, been away with work....

Ok, spanner in the works  !*!

Adding the flippers was great, but the URL under them should traditionally retain the "www" for clarity, and the URL should really be a solid WHITE text as the red/white border amongst the black shirt isn't contrasting enough.
I can see why you enlarged the text and dropped the "www" to compensate, BUT, the fact that it's now shrunk to a breast-logo, i'm still going for a solid white URL.

The heading "Aussie Pinball" can remain red/white border, as it's larger font and spaced for readability.

Those final designs (on BLACK shirt) are a simple 2 colour print, should be cheap-as....
The black shirts will be more expensive than the white, because it'll require a white base layer first, then red ontop.

If i had my printing gear handy i'd happily print these myself, but that's another story, maybe next time around....

just my 3cents  %$%

I like the design for a Black Shirt - Excellent

The rear of the shirt would look great with the banner design, Wotto

Maybe time for some quick polls ?

MarkC - Can you talk to your T-Shirt guy on Tuesday and get pricing on T-Shirts, Polos and caps - similar to what you have for PSP ? Embroided or printed..

Keep adding comments folks and we can get this gone really quickly.

Geoff, just for my  :2cents:

I preferred the original lot which got the thumbs up.  Does everything need to be crammed into the one side? (ie bumper + words+ flippers)

Maybe then have flippers and full http:// address on the back?

If not majority rules and I'll still get one...

Just some food for thought.
Title: Re: Aussie Pinball Merchandising
Post by: ajlaird on April 14, 2009, 10:11:41 PM
There is no design that will please everyone, so go with one that pleases 90%.

I don't mind it with flippers or without; the flippers are a nice touch and make it more obviously pinball related, but they tend to crowd the design a bit. I think the URL looks better in lower case (which allows www to fit at the front of the URL). I also think it is good to have the URL on the front of the shirt as well as the back.

Don't like the white url, red and white version looks heaps better.

So my vote goes to the bottom one of the two presented in reply #124 in this thread (final two) but with the url in lower case and with www out the front.

I forgot to say in previous post that the REAR design, using the 2 bumpers as the 'dots' on the i's is great,

Would members going to Expo want their T-Shirts prior to Expo, or have them beforehand ?

Before there is a "mad rush" - I'll just grab the numbers off Geoff as we had extra T-Shirts made and either he or myself will respond.

hey geoffh
i was thinking of making some of these up as vinyl stickers in a couple of sizes and if you want a dollar off each one sold can go towards running costs for the site.
i would only claim a dollar or 2 on top of material & postage costs to pay for wear and tear on my plotter blade + fuel cost for picking up materials.

so if you give the ok for this i will take orders off the site members.

Geoff is right - If you guys want to submit any art for merchandise - you are welcome to do so

Beaky - Feel free to PM either Tony (Creech) or myself and we can discuss. As long as your costs are covered and members are interested, theres no reason why we should not do it

I agree. Lets have a look at it first and we can go from there. Sounds like a great idea.

Guys I would love an AP shirt if we could get some cool Pin art on them. A Gorgar or similar would look great.

Possible licensing issues might make this difficult?

well here is the first attempt at the stickers i am making
bit of a stuff up with the red on white writing but we learn from our mistakes.
i am going to remove pinball forum from the pop bumber and the flippers and put pinball forum in place of the flippers.
i will post this when it is done.

one thing about black it shows every bit of dust.

this sticker is 150 x 150 mm
the reason i am removing some of the lettering is because it is to small to weed

and yes my next attempt is a bumper sticker

the vinyl that these are made from should last 5 years out doors "3M brand"

He gave some of these away for the raffle at the Bushfire Aid Meet & Greet - but I haven't put it on my car yet, for a couple of reasons...

weed is a term used to describe the process of removing the vinyl that is not needed after the plotter has cut the shape in the vinyl

I would love an AP windcheater, currently its too cold for the Polo unless it under something, but then you cant show it off.

What about a windcheater?   *%*

Believe me, there was no problem with that at the Pinball Expo! All those pins and people generate a lot of heat.

But yeah, now that winter is upon us a windcheater is a good idea - not that I would be looking to buy one, though.
