Bally Black Rose Reconditioning
« on: March 02, 2013, 01:36:00 PM »

This game is a popular machine these days, and when it is fully working, it is an underrated game. This machine will be fully reconditioned and LEDs used on the playfield - that's a lot of flashers !

Condition Report

Playfield - 8/10 - Looks very good -Except the cannon entry. This area is always a high wear area due to the cannon sub assembly being mis adjusted. I have an easy fix for this !

Cabinet - 9/10 - This is the best cabinet I've seen on a Black Rose. The REDS are still REDS and not pink or white ! There is some damage and "cover ups" near the ball shooter assembly.

Electronics - 9/10 - All good. I will upgrade and bullet proof as I go along. The Driver board looked brand new ! Display IS brand new !

The Game is in working order, and it is complete. It could meet eBay standards quite easily  #@#

"Before" pictures

Cabinet is excellent on both sides

Ramps are good, but filthy.

I replace the "cleaned" posts..

Some insert wear, and the wear in front of the cannon assembly

I often see reconditioned or shopped games and the section behind the backboard is untouched. This has to be completed correctly.

Sub assemblies are removed and they will be stripped, cleaned, sleeves replaced and the incorrect parts or broken parts will be replaced.

The area above the cannon will be repaired by repainting the section and leveling with a clearcoat. I will then unveil the "fix" which I've surprisingly not seen on any other Black Rose ? Primer is already applied.

The cannon assembly will be stripped and rebuilt. The inside is filthy. No use in cleaning the playfield and leaving this assembly filthy !

Good stuff Nino, agree that BR is extremely underated.  Its one of my favourite games, and i think its because the ruleset is quite different to any other machine.  While it may seem a bit repetitive, sinking your first ship is rewarding, then the challenge is to get as many more as you can.

I think my record is 7

Playfield is fully stripped. That includes EVERYTHING - no corners cut. Cleaned and then polished. Waxed and buffed. I'm building up the area where the Cliffy will go so it is flat.

I replace posts rather than cleaning the old ones. Playfield is reassembled with LEDS for GI, feature and all flashers. All metal parts are cleaned and tumbled.

All the spot targets will have new target foam.

Cliffy installed after the section was levelled with clear.

New flipper kits etc were installed. Underside was completely rebuilt.

The door was scratched and needed a repaint.

Some shots of the completed playfield

Door refinished. The cabinet has been cleaned and polished.

A very pleasing game to play - underrated title which is earning respect as a very good player  ^^^

For those thinking of installing LEDs - this is the perfect game - it lends well to full playfield LEDs. I could not get the backglass to work with any LEDs unfortunately - too much "bleed" in the translite.

Great job.  Looks excellent.   I like the shape of the earlier Ballys headbox with the speakers up high.  Alot of games this shape from Bally were terrific.

What a cool cliffy-assisting with the shot direction. Always like a simple clean resto thread, looks very nice and owner will be stoked with this great pinny.
If it isn't broke, it isn't pinball.

Yes - these Ballys and the previous Bally / Midway cabinets look great. I missed two mint "Atlantis" games which are an awesome art package.

I was shocked to find that no-one has this cliffy installed. I've seen dozens of Black Roses with significant wear and no cliffy. The reason the wear happens is due to the cannon assembly moving out of it's correct adjustment.
