Title: Bally Midway Dungeons and Dragons Reconditioning
Post by: Strangeways on May 21, 2020, 05:50:05 PM
This project has been in and out the queue a couple times, but it needed to be done quickly as it has a date with a shipping container !

Objective

A standard reconditioning job. No special treatment such as cabinet or playfield work, so it will be done quickly.

Condition Report

The game is complete with topper (rare) and the game plays ok, but it very sloppy !

Cabinet - 8/10 - VERY good for its age. No real damage and artwork was unfaded and intact.
Playfield - 7/10 - Factory mylar that is staying put. Wear around unprotected areas.
Transllite - 7/10 - Faded, but in good condition
Electronics - 8/10 - Really nice condition. Original battery !

Mylar over the inserts - heat trapped between the mylar and the insert caused them to bubble and made them cloudy.

Very interesting playfield design. In-line drop targets and under the ramp is one of the ball locks. Really smart design.

What a shame that's going overseas, i'd be really interested in a nice one of those. Would go well with my Sorcerer.

Never seen the topper before. Interested to see how you go with the bubbled mylar over the insert, Nino

Given this is the only Dungeons and Dragons I've done, and possibly the last, it was really interesting stripping the game. It was really complex and difficult as the rear of the playfield had two cutounts with a left timber ramp and right hand side raised playfield. They really packed this game with features - not uncommon during this period.

Left ramp into a blue plastic return ramp;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/Dungeons%20CMC/Dungeon%20CM%20055_resize.jpg)

RHS raised playfield with in-line targets.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/Dungeons%20CMC/Dungeon%20CM%20057_resize.jpg)

Playfield underside. Really packed in those coils in the top half !!

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/Dungeons%20CMC/Dungeon%20CM%20061_resize.jpg)

Note the cutout playfield on both corners..

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/Dungeons%20CMC/Dungeon%20CM%20059_resize.jpg)

Coils everywhere ! But all coils were good. Just sloppy mechs..

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/Dungeons%20CMC/Dungeon%20CM%20085_resize.jpg)

Mechs removed for cleaning - I've seen far worse, but these had a fair amount of lubricant.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/Dungeons%20CMC/Dungeon%20CM%20093_resize.jpg)

First, the playfield is cleaned with "simple Green", then Novus 3, Novus 2 and then I bring out the polishing kit and buffing wheel. Just a matter of spending time going through each section. The mylar in staying in situ as it we are not looking at a playfield restoration.

Amazing how colourful it looks even though there is a 30 year old mylar over the top

This machine was allocated to a collector quite some time ago and completed recently. DD is a very rare game, especially with the topper.

Some issues with the drop target Bank - a missing spot target face ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/Dungeons%20CMC/Dungeon%20CM%20126_resize.jpg)

So which of these old targets match ?

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/Dungeons%20CMC/Dungeon%20CM%20128_resize.jpg)

This one is the best !

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/Dungeons%20CMC/Dungeon%20CM%20129_resize.jpg)

This game was going to have factory Globes and flashers - No LEDs. But New plastic set really set teh game off !

Time to play test the game - almost done !

Under the playfield turned out really well. All assemblies rebuilt and working 100%

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/Dungeons%20CMC/Dungeon%20CM%20167_resize.jpg)

Both Teleport assemblies had to be adjusted a few times as they are super sensitive. Found the sweet spot and they dropped properly every time.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/Dungeons%20CMC/Dungeon%20CM%20168_resize.jpg)

That's a lot of assemblies to clean the rebuild !

Flipper kits installed ;

I'm happy with the playfield, even though we chose to leave the mylar intact. This is to be a presentable, working 100% "player's game" and it finished up being just that. Lucky it has the topper and the 31 inch legs unique to this machine.

Here is a NOS or repro Translite - which much better colors.

Degreaser - Water based "Diggers" from Bunnings. Don't be fooled - this stuff is HARSH. You mix it with water.

Just wondering what proportion you would use with water? And how long to leave the parts in it for?

I think it is one part degreaser to ten parts of water. I usually leave the parts in for 10 minutes, and then monitor - sometimes it can take 1-2 hours.
