Title: Coconut Island Cabinet Art
Post by: spacies on February 07, 2009, 02:25:06 PM
First up I would like to thank the Coconut Island guys for asking me to help on their project. Its certainly attracted plenty of attention in the pinball community and its great to see them having a crack at what is understandably a very difficult project.

This is the 3rd revision of this art.
Let me know what you guys think and if you think I should change anything, speak up!

The front still needs a tree or 2 as well.

I haven't done the head box yet but it will only be a Palm Tree with a Flare.

:D

That is simply stunning, Spacies  #*#

It suits the theme of the game and also compliments the vibrant colors on the playfield.

It puts the recent Stern Cab art to shame.

My only question - The game is called "Coconut Island" - But where are the coconuts ?  !@#

Edit - The Coconuts are there (brownish color) - But were not easy for me to find.. Maybe lighten them up a bit or put them in front of the grass ?

My wife says that you should "cut the grass"  %.% , Then they can be seen better..

I think the topper is a lawn mower, so just ask the boys if you can borrow it  !^!

Don't worry Mark - My missus spotted them, after reading my post - So I did get a slap in the back of the head.

In my defense, I was blinded by the quality of the rest of the images...

Spacies - how long did it take to do ?

The mask, pot, 2 of the flowers are clip art. The rest is hand drawn vector. Take a look @ these pics:

Each dot is a click of the mouse, then you drag to get the right shape, then you fill it with the colour you want. Vector can be blown up as big as you want without pixelation as apposed to raster images (photos etc)

This project has benefited from a number of freely given items and help, from a  box of parts mailed over from the US by Cliffy (who even refused my paypal payment for just the shipping!), an AFM scoop from Lloyd (which will feature in the next game), a web site created for us, a populated system 11 playfield for all the mechs we needed from Bumper... just read the Contributors tab on the site.

But this was an unexpected and very special contribution to this project, something that will add a professional touch to the initial impression of the machine. One pinball addict today said "That looks as good as anything that ever came out of Williams in the 90's". It was no faint praise either, he meant it.

We've added Spacies to the Contributors page, but another thank you here won't go astray!

So thanks Bro !!

Like I said before, you don't wanna know bro  :lol To put it into some perspective, the monkey took about an hour  ^%^
Its pretty hard to just draw something with detail on the computer from scratch. Usually you sketch it on paper, take a photo of something or scan it and then insert that as your first layer and lock it. Then you draw over the top and tweak it so it looks right. Then you fill in the colours and tweak those. Then you muck around some more and more and more and more until you are happy.
Then the monkey is done and you start on something else.

So yeah, a lot of work so far  ^&^

First print!

Found about 20 mistakes so I have corrected them all now.
Here is the print tiled on A3 and taped together. Its a good idea to do this before the final decal printing because you can look over it a lot easier than on a monitor.

Most of the RHS will be a copy and paste/reflect but I will have to move a bit of stuff around to make it fit so it won't be 100% the same on the RHS.
Still got to do the front and the head box :(

I'm on the list for the first run of NPC kits. Will you do the art for mine?
It ought to be dead easy. You've done most of the work already.
The Aussies have kicked it off in a big way, so I'm thinking of a theme that captures the true modern American spirit.
I'd kind of like to do something original, but we hardly create any new movies, television or other entertainment anymore, so I figured It would be more "American" to just do a spin-off.
We mostly just sit around the house, consume and get obese, and we're slowly moving closer & closer to a police state, so for both those reasons I'd like to just call it "Donut Island". #@#
How much would you charge to draw up a D and change a couple colors? &&

Truly awesome work spacies.

Maybe a volcano would be better for a topper anyways. That would kick! They could put one of those kiddie lawnmower toy domes with the little bouncing balls in there to simulate lava and kill two tie-ins with one shot, hehe.

Ha ha ha, fuuny shit man.
Yes I will do your art if you want. I could make the 'O's into donuts, lol.
Great stuff, you made me laugh.

Thanks again!

I started to start on it.
Trying to stay within the "true modern American spirit" vibe, I talked to some local corporate managers first (they can be found everywhere around here) since that's just how it's done on this side of the pond. They almost shot it down completely, which will happen eventually if I keep them in the loop. They wanted to change the name to "Happy Winner" but I stood my ground and insisted, in words they'd understand, that it is "advisable to keep as much interchangeable text as possible for it to remain efficient and viable". Then they put their heads together and settled on.... (drum roll please)

"DONUT LAND, LLC"

a bit less exciting, but has same letter count so that works. Since I knew ahead of time that you were into it, I told them that I would see if you could make the O into a donut - my ace in the hole.
()

Watch out kids! Here comes the USA. %%$
hehe

BTW, that sweet little coconut probably won't work for this one. An accurate local representation would need much more puffiness everywhere, plus she'd probably have to have two or three tattoos and two or three begging toddlers in tow.

Wow. I don't know I'm a frustrated old cuss or just need a vacation. @@^

Cheers!

Love the flyer!  I'll offer thoughts anyway since they're really cheap.

You'll want the actual translite there eventually, but when you put it there, don't you dare file the coconut girl away.

I'd make the machine look like it's sitting inside a stick hut or treehouse with big open, wide windows, mirror the girl and make her look like she's peeking in at you over the machine while drooping in from under the top of the window. Tuck that "would you leave" in there anywhere and it will be seen since it's a high-profile starburst anyway, and it will be more subtle and humorous. That will frame it in so it's not floating in space, and give the coconut girl more interesting context.

More great work man. Too cool.

$.01

p.s. Sorry, maybe that IS the real translite idea. I'm not sure what the fellers have in mind for the display and was thinking it would be taking up some space up above. I'd have to say that she would win some "best translite girl" contests if she ends up there somehow.

I was just mucking around with those. Nothing set in concrete. I agree about the blue though.

I will be in touch with you soon.

Still making money, but, so not too much of either!

Nice artistry Spacies, it complements well the hard work the boys have put in.
