Took a bit to get it going...now the hard part restoring it. I have refreshed the Cab ( haven't got any artwork - does anyone?) So I am putting it back together with a coat of "roadshow blue" and giving it a good clean. Cabinet first then playfield which has a bit of wear....oh what fun it is! Here are some more pic's of progres so far.

Good stuff.  Looks like it will turn out like new!  Were the decals removed previously?  How is the playfield wear wise and what are the boards like?

NEVER boring.  I love the resto threads..

I love the safety tape theme in the cab...Thats a great touch!

Marty

Decals were off the machine when I started, but it had been repainted a gastly colour of blue by some hacker. The rest of it was in OK nick and just needed a good clean. The CPU board had a darlington tranny array issue which was fixed and the driver board needs new rectifiers and new caps. That's why its not in the head at the moment. The playfeild has wear at the kickout on the fish and a bit on Teds heat near the right flipper from drag. That bit kills me as its easy to replace the flipper bushes on these things!!! I'll post some pic's of the playfied shortly

Might pay to give these guys an email: http://www.phoenixarcade.com/art.htm

Roadshow is listed, but as sold out?  Probably not cheap to import, but would finish off machine perfectly.

BAA have them:

http://bayareaamusements.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=CBD

But would be over $500?

Resto threads are NEVER Boring !

Great progress and I like the yellow and black tape you have used inside the cabinet - nice touch.

If it is a "keeper" - I'd buy the decals - would finish off the game nicely.

Here is some of my PF touch ups for this machine. Before and after. I'm reasonably pleased with the result, however the fish is not quite right I thinks. Likely do it again as the are not locked in. Off to be 2pac'd when I get em right.

That looks pretty good to me!

Have you done pf touchups before?  If you hadn't of shown the before shots I don't reckon I would have picked it....

Are you CC' it yourself or have you got someone to do it?

I reckon the touch ups are great, but those dots I bet are a bugger. I tried on my TZ wish shit results. How did you do yours? I tried various ways but not happy.

Ah, now I get it - the stippling isn't perfect.

It might be best tried with a rapidograph ink pen - apparently this will be OK under clear coat as per Humpalot's Gottlieb High Hand restoration over here: http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=276.23 (http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=276.23)

Nice one. I'll invest in a set of rapidograph ink pens. As for the CC I'll get a mate to do it for me...unless you know someone local in Sydney near Penrith??    !@# :tumble:

Cannot wait for update photos..  I reckon it will look a million bucks...

I've just spent the last week on repairing my cab.  Not an easy job and give me a better appreciation as to how much work goes into getting it right - like yours..!!

Its back. Really happy with the result. Its not perfect but its the best I'm gonna get it. The clear coat is like liquid diamond! Took some pic's with my phone (apologies for the quality). The last pick is a before shot.

Great stuff.

What was the process you did?  Did you sand the existing pf (1200 or similar) prior to clear then how many coats?

I'm very very interested in this.  Looks a million bucks and should play verrrry fast!

Post by: bigdaddy on May 07, 2009, 08:22:20 PM
Marty

I did not do the CC myself a mate did it for me. I didn't go into the detail, but from memory..I'm getting older...he told me he lightly block sanded with 800 grit, applied first 2 coats , block sanded and then applied 2 more. It was done in a booth and left to dry without heat.  I think even he was impressed on how good it came out - I know I was. $#$

Awesome.

From what I've read, most places recommend a minimum of 45 days before attaching furniture to the playfield & esp ball play.

Are you planning to let yours set?

Do you know what CC was used? 2pac etc?
Title: Re: Roadshow Project
Post by: bigdaddy on May 08, 2009, 06:28:36 PM
Yes I am planning not to populate the playfield for at least a month. As for the CC it was 2 pac. I will try to find out what manufacturer of the paint

I've got the opportunity to work on a Roadshow that has quite a lot of damage to the playfield. What did you use to fill the playfield? I am tossing up using knead it epoxy wood putty or automotive body filler.
Did you end up using the radiograph pens to recolor the damaged areas?
How this project looking? I enjoyed seeing how good the playfield looked after repair!

<.>

For the outhole I used an epoxy 2 part soft hand mix product you can get at any hardware store. It comes in a tube. Think the process is documented in one of the marvin DVD's.
No I did not end up using the radiograph pens to do the stipling. I used an acrylic/brush.  Unfortunately I used a sharpie pen to do some black trace and this milked into the clear. I've never seen that before and just had to happen on this playfield. Anyway you can only see it if you take a real good look.
I will post some progress pic's shortly to take a look at. This machine must have the most moving parts I have ever seen on a pinny! Think that's why it never was widely rx by operators?????

Getting back to this restore so an update here. I got my hands on some side art and have applied via the dry method nice and slowly. I am really happy with the results. Now to put it all back together (how long?) and get ready to move it out the door!

A quick update.

It's almost back together with only a few little adjustments and fixes etc.  This machine looks almost as new if I do say so myself. For the finishing touch I swapped the GI and playfield and most of the flashers to LED's. The machine looks awsome when powered up!
Will add some more pic's shortly.

Looks awesome.

Has anyone seen any translites or speaker panels available for RS?

This machine orginally had no translite and I spent months tracking one down and eventually got my hands on a NOS one. Not much fun looking and waiting, however this project has been going on now for about 2 years so I'm used to waiting.

I don't suppose they happened to have two did they?  It's a shame there isn't someone interested in making them hey!!!!

Wow.  Top work on this one.

Roadshow is a great fun game.

I have no idea re pricing on this one.  I don't think I've seen one in restored condition or as nice as yours.  They seem to sell between privately for $2k to $3k depending on condition.

The main thing is to get it done no matter how long it takes. Slow and sure wins the race.
