Title: GOTTLIEB TORCH REBUILD
Post by: ddstoys on September 20, 2009, 06:17:52 PM
Well my brother had been coming over and playing my Pinballs for a while and mentioned that he would like to get one this one was offered to me from Dean my brother liked the pics so we made the trip up to Deans for a look.
It will need some work to get it going but its a great starting point for a first pinball machine.

Here is the machine set up  (My brother had to go to work when we got back so he hasnt even seen it like this yet lol)

TORCH was the 2nd pin i ever owned back in UK days - have a pic somewhere of me in front of it - will dig it out and post it.
Machine was bought not working for 70 pounds ( approx $180) - replaced a 7407 buffer and she worked a treat. I sold her on  - cant tell you for how much - wouldnt have been anymore than what id paid though im sure

I remember being in Goddards in Broadway, Sydney the day this game came in from the US.

They had just pulled it out of the box and assembled it.

Not many of these kicking about and pretty cool to play.

Can't imagine being in the Gottlieb factory when the US decided to pull the pin on the Olympic Games that year....and there went any hope for that game  &^&

Here ya go... me and my 2 pins.. must be 20 years ago cos thats when i had the waistcoat - i was also living in that place cos my flat had been repossessed - i had to get out fast and ended up in there... was a GREAT party house!

Funny - i lose my house etc but keep the pins, ach - well you can only sell so much,i recall refusing to sell the pins and my records ( still have the records but those 2 pins have gone)

Well... they are SEGASA TRAVEL TIME - stunning example, and of course GTB TORCH - me in the middle smoking a spliff

Love it when the mylar comes off so well and reveals a nice playfield like that.

Looks like my share in Rannex will be going up I think judging from the state of the lock down bar mech! What's the rest like rust-wise?

Yes i had a brand new bottle sitting in my car today when i was over.   Rust wise its not to bad the lock bar mech is probably the worst bit.

Well we stripped back the Apron and ball arch and gave it a respray in a similar color to the one in the flyer which came up pretty well im just touching up the artwork and will make some decals to finish it off.

Looks awesome Daniel, what was the preperation as I need to do a few aprons.  How did you prepare it for painting?  How did you paint Spray pac?  What type of paint?  Sorry for all the questions but it looks great and as stated I need to do some of these.
Title: Re: GOTTLIEB TORCH REBUILD
Post by: ddstoys on September 28, 2009, 08:06:06 PM
It was pretty easy i sanded it with an orbital sander back to bare metal.   Gave it a few coats of pressure pac primer and lightly block sanded smooth with 1200 wet rub then gave it a light coat of color and then a thicker coat to finish off.   I hope this helps

Well some of the ordered parts arrived from PBR so we have been plodding along doing bits and pieces in wait for the Pascal all in one board.  We have reseated all the lamp inserts and installed new globes under the playfield.  Any crappy rusted parts have been painted in the matching purple and we have installed brand new lamp sockets in the backbox its a big job but well worth it every globe is the same brightness and all the banging and wobbling they never go dim or stop.

Ive almost finished touching up the artwork from the top arch and hope to start on the apron art soon

Well the Pascal board arrived today. My brothers joy turned into dissapointment when it came up coil locked on so he really didnt get to enjoy it.  But after he left i spent a few hours trying to nut out the problem.    All coils and diodes tested fine, Power was fine but still got coil locked on warning.   So i removed the plug for the playfield coils still came up with the issue i unsoldered every coil  ^.^ ^.^ ^.^  Still no joy.

But with the coil fuse removed the issue dissapeared  !@#  There was also no sound so i decided to remove the plug to the original soundboard (No longer used) And problem solved there must be a short in the loom to the old soundboard GRRRRR   But its all fixed now and the sound issue is a dead speaker.

Once the pbr order arrives we will have the remaining coils and parts needed to finish it off   $#$

I had a similar issue in SYS1 machine. It kept reporting the outhole coil was bad. Replaced the coil and I was done. The old oil measured as "good"..

Well the parts arrive to make torch playable and i must say its not a bad game for a system 1.   All the hard work payed off when my brother played his first game he was so excited @@*    Only a few minor jobs left.

Job 1 Roll under gate ( Thanks Skybeaux )
Job 2 Roto target repair (Again thanks Skybeaux)
Job 3 Apron and arch artwork decals
job 4 Get a high score he will never beat   %.% %.% %.% %.% %.%

Well after all the work scanning, touch up and editing the apron and ball arch artwork i printed out a decal for the apron.

DISSASTER   looked great on the printed out decal with the white backing but as soon as the white was removed and put onto the purple the yellow and orange turned brown.. @.@

So a lesson for anyone thinking of trying this unless the apron is white dont waste your time   #(&

Well thanks to Kev who sent me down some White decal papers to try on the apron.      Seems to have worked ok biggest problem is ive had to cut out each color and shape and place them on one at a time what a nightmare but looks better than the plain purple.   Couldnt add the gottlieb bit as i had no way to cut out the fine detail so we are just going to add the Pascal Magnet we got with the All in one board.

Once its dry ill clean it up and give it a clear coat then report back  ^^^

Looks great Daniel. Rather that cut and fit each shape separately, another way might've been to fill the white sections with a matching purple before you printed your decal (in photoshop etc) im guessing you used something like that to create the decal?? I use Arcsoft Photostudio (came with my Canon scanner) to do this type of thing.

Just a thought, thats how i'd try to get around the problem anyway. I KNOW it'd be a BITCH trying to get a good match for that purple too! Anyway like i said.. looks great what you've done ^^^

Cheers... Mitch

Yes i did try matching the purple i even tried to scan the apron purple into the printer but it kept coming out crap.   I did purple fill the shooter gauge as i had no choice looks ok tucked away down there but would stand out like dogs balls on top of the apron
