Title: Tumbler
Post by: The pinballist formally known as Dean Morgan on December 08, 2008, 09:53:10 PM
Is this tumbler any good for cleaning pinball parts or is it a toy?

and they actually remove rust off playfield posts & small rails etc?

No - They won't. In fact, the white corrosive powder from the parts will mix with the media and spread on to other parts.

Wash the corroded parts as per my Sinbad Thread in the restoration section.

Never put dirty parts in a tumbler, rusted or not.

Dean, i bought the larger version of this locally for $160 new.

http://www.nextag.com/RCBS-Vibratory-Case-Tumbler-63105080/prices-html

Local gun shop had around 8 to choose from, cheapest and smallest being only $79.

The one i bought, i could easily fit a shooter rod in etc

Wow !!!

I had a tumbler 30 years ago, i was right into gemstones & rocks, and dad bought me a tumber for xmas, it ran 24/7 turning my horrid rocks into .....well..... "smoother" horrid rocks (i never quite got a 'gemstone' come out).

MY tumbelr from from a local lapidary club (gemstome shop) back in the day, but there might be better range at todays gem shops, wherever they may be?? maybe sold at mining (metal detector) shops?

I would have thought these days a mini ultrasonic bath (jaycar etc) would be used for cleaning parts?
Also try the Oxalyic Acid from Bunnings for rust removal brings things back to original chrome/nickle/zinc again.

I'd like to try the ultrasonic method to clean parts. I hear it is particularly good to clean ribbed plastic posts etc..

I've ultrasonic cleaned old bike parts (bearings etc), small R/C aeroplane engines, and plastic pieces galore.

Ultrasonic is fantastic for getting dirt, grease and grit out out the smallest crevices where tumbling just wont do it.

would these ultrasonics do the hex spacers or is a tumbler the best bet?

Either should do the job - Ultrasonic sounds like to would be a better cleaner, whereas a tumbler is not a cleaner, but a polisher. If you throw dirty metal parts into a tumbler the media turns black, so parts must be cleaned beforehand..

I just bought this tumbler today:
http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/tumblers/1200-pro-tumbler.php (http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/tumblers/1200-pro-tumbler.php)

Seems to be one of the tumblers that is recommended by our pinball friends in the USA. Melbourne Firearms (http://melbournefirearms.com.au/ (http://melbournefirearms.com.au/)) in Ringwood had one for sale, along with the Walnut (Tuffnut) and Corncob Media.

I'm looking forward to putting this one to the test...

Im most impressed with my new tumbler - only using corn cob dry, but ive been putting all the furniture off the bank A ball PF through it and they are coming up a treat! Was especially happy with the roll over switches which now shine again for the first time in 40 years

I seriously can't comprehend how pinheads DON'T have a tumbler.

I'm thinking of a SECOND one !

I've spent YEARS without one, but now that I have some more resto's to do, I can't see how I would do them without it.

I'll give you a tip. Use this stuff ;

Mark usually gets it in for me.

What usually takes 12 - 24 hours to polish will take 4 hours with Flitz.

Thanks Gav for the advise... I used one at Marks the other day for a pinball I'm restoring. Left the tumbler on for 2 days straight 'cos the metal parts were pretty rusty. I was impressed on how well they came up! Hence why I bought one for myself... Yep, nothing beats a hands free polish!

Got another pinball here that's also pretty badly rusted / corroded, so my new tumbler will get a workout on those parts $#$

That was one of the games from the container. Scrubbed up well - but don't put the rusted parts in the tumbler before reading this. Your media will go black..  !!!

Thanks for advice Nino. The machine I have here is the Charlies Angels from the same container as the Sinbad, so you already know what I'm in for @.@
Looks like I will be using the rust remover first, before tumbling...
