Displays Flickering Williams Sorcerer
« on: May 27, 2020, 12:04:47 PM »
Hi all, it's never bothered me much but since i got my Sorcerer from the states the score displays flicker at all times. A mate of mine did the transformer adaption when it got here, but i don't know if the displays were flickering when it was still 110v.

Any help on what i should look for?

Maybe replace the capacitor on the power board,  if it’s original it’s probably not filtering the voltage enough

Thanks, i'll suggest that to Neil and see what he says. It wouldn't be a different value for 50-60Hz or the voltage difference?

Thanks, i did find them on the wiki, is this pic the ones?

Also had this to say about power filtering;

System 9 MPU Williams used a single version of the System 9 MPU in all System 9 games. A few minor modifications to the board may have been made, but it's essentially the same board for the entire 3 game run of Space Shuttle, Sorcerer, and Comet. The picture at left shows an early board that featured two inductors (copper wound coils that "smooth" DC power) at L1 and L2, adjacent to connector 1J17. Later revisions of the board used "zero ohm" jumpers instead, presumably to reduce cost.

Anything there i should get him to check out?

No, Daniel is referring to the main filter capacitor in the high voltage section of the power supply.
As he suggests, if it has never been changed it could be dried out and causing the flickering you're seeing.

Thanks Mitch, trying to find a part number to order one and found this page.

Says to change diodes to drop the voltage from 100 to 91 volts, is that something you guys would recommend as well?

Gotta duck out but will keep trying to find an answer this afternoon, i really want the machine to be perfect for Pinfest.

Yes - the 91V Zener will prolong the life of the display, but won't fix the flickering. Run with the suggestions of replacing the Capacitor first.

Couple more issues i want to address before i take the machine out in public, shooter rod plastic sleeve, i have an order in with pspa for some bits and have asked if they have them and waiting an answet, but if they say no, where in Au would i find the Williams sleeves like Marco has?

https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/03-7357

The other two parts i need to source are the chrome lift channel and speaker trim that look like they weren't replaced in the restore, hoping it's just a budget thing rather than a difficulty sourcing new parts?

Looking at RTBB but not sure how to identify the right parts.

We have the sleeves ;

The 1/8 stainless lift channel has Sorcerer in the list of games that it is used for. We have 17 in stock. Let us know if there is anything else you need !

Ordered the sleeves already i will get the lift channel for sure, the only otgher thing i need is the stainless trim for the speaker panel below it. Could those two pieces of stainless just be polished out rather than replaced?
It's only light surface rust from fingerprimnts rather than deep pitting.

Neil was here yesterday and said there were two capacitors (250v 100uf) one on the 100- and one on the 100+.

He thought that the Zeners were D4 and D5 but i haven't found out yet the values of them to reorder, need to reread the page with the tech stuff on it.

Sorry to keep asking for help, but i don't know how to search for the part i need.

https://au.element14.com/c/passive-components/capacitors?ost=100uf+250v+cap&searchref=searchlookahead&capacitance=100uf&voltage-rating=250v#

They are all rated the same but have different connections and sizes as far as i can tell. i've tried the wiki and google to try and find a part number, and searched all the part numbers i can find written on the ones that are there. i have NFI how to find the zener diodes at all either.

All good i figured out that it has the wrong ones in it, should be 160v rather than 250v. Guess it doesn't matter but i was able to find a kit for it in the US. At least i'll know i have the right ones.
