Title: Restoration of a Flintstones
Post by: MartyJ on August 06, 2010, 09:26:08 PM
Hi guys,

I will be embarking on a restoration of a Flintstones over the coming months, in between all of my other work commitments.  This game is going into the private collection as the wifey has been a fan of this game for a long time, since playing one at MarkC's about two years ago (thanks Mark!).
After seeing the brilliant job Wotto did with his, I'm going to be giving mine similar treatment..

Thanks to Oscar for doing me a great deal on this game..

Overall a great base to start with.  Playfield is in very nice condition.

All flippers will be replaced along with a full rebuild of all other components!

The apron was in reasonable shape, but I stopped in and briefly saw the Duckman this morning who gave me a great deal on a new one - although I did have to give him a whopping great tip to keep quiet!

Underside of playfield is free from hacks, which is always a nice starting place.

Nice dirty cabinet - just how I like them!

Looks pretty good to me. After the clean and flipper kits, a quik flame polish on the ramps and she will sparkle.  ^^^

Well done mate. A good pick up.

Excellent choice. I've got one in storage I'm hoping to get to someday.

I could use a new apron, but the freight from overseas is killer. Hey Duckman, how about you come back to Bloomington this summer, and bring me an apron? :)

Good stuff Marty, FS is a fun machine.  You probably know that I am the proud owner of Wotto's old FS machine now.

A common problem with this machine are the two flaps/diverters at the top of the playfield - both of them should open up to allow the ball to flow around the top of the playfield.  On both of the FS machines I have had, they haven't worked properly.  I'm sure you will figure the machine out but if you need a hand with anything just give me a yell.

Thanks guys, I'll try to update it when I can.  As its 'real time' it may be a slowish one!

Pete - At this stage the game is going straight into the collection as the next game was wifeys choice, although somehow the Star Wars which was also her choice we kept, so I'm not sure whats going on there!   *!@

Hey John, would love to mate but 22 hrs in a plane with nothing but t.v.dinners nearly killed me last time.

The could at least have some self-serve mac and cheese, That would have kept me out of trouble.  &&

Bit more progress on Flintstones today.

Playfield is all but stripped.  Pop bumpers and rest of standup targets to go.

Lamp boards all out for cleaning & re-flowing.

You must have the patience of a Saint Marty.  It looks like a pretty good base to start with mate.

I cannot take all the credit on this one.  The wifey going on from her success on the Star Wars shopout, she has stripped this one all by herself (leaving me pop bumpers / targets / trough etc).
She has also taken all the photos and measurements of posts etc so if there is any left over when it goes back together...  ^&(

Those boards look like my lungs when I was a smoker. Are they gonna be a dishwasher job there Marty? BTW I've heard the Flintstones is a sleeper of a title, game play and fun rating is up there without the price tag. Dave made me have a game on one and I did enjoy it heaps. Look forward to seeing a shiney clean machine.

My wife's more considerate than yours, MArty.....she lets me do the shopping and the cooking and the washing up and the drying....none of this taking all the cream jobs.....I get to do it all....lucky me  &^&

Tell your wife when she's had enough, I've got a ToM that needs tearing down.  *%*

:D  Rob...You're a funny man.  You are most welcome to pop over for a game when the machine is finished.

OK, driver board out and caps and bridges removed.  I generally do this on all my machines, however a couple of the caps were bulging so I did the lot.
It also includes the upgrade to C4 and a new regulator as well.  The G.I (J115, J121 & J120) were like new.  Not even a hint of brown which is a first.

At least tell me there was at least one dry joint  ^^^

Playfield has been cleaned.  I am still making up my mind as to the next step with the playfield.   !@#

Cabinet has been cleaned.  Not going to crazy as the game is not being decaled but much cleaner.  I have also upgraded all the leg plates..

The old tool box has copped a workout today!

More progress on the Flintstones today.  I've rebuilt all under playfield mechs, all new sleeves in all.  Flippers fully rebuilt (inc bushing & coil) (x 3).

A couple of coils were a bit suspect (1 x bumper) and 1 x ramp divertor so both have been replaced.

All metalwork has been tumbled and ready to go back on.  Couple more parts arriving from RTBB & MarkC then she is all ready to be finished..

Not too many pics this time round.

Now all the underside is complete, I've moved to the topside.  I am hoping to have it finished tomorrow and start enjoying it!

All new bumper skirts, springs and bodies.  Small investment and makes a big difference.

Standup targets all checked, cleaned and new backing foam.

Now, for those eagle eyed collectors, yes they are BALLY flipper bats.  I like to mix it up a bit with my choice of flipper colour and I think the style suits the game & theme.

They are actually the flipper bats from a Bugs Bunny's Birthday Bash Pinball.

They are usually called Carrot flipper bats. Rare as well. I think marco or bay area still have a few left, but there would not be many at all.

It does look really good on the flinstones.  ^^^

Aren't those bats a smidge longer than regular bats?

A handful of S11 games used that style bats. Radical used yellow ones, as did EATPM and Transporter. Dr Dude used white ones. I think I saw blue ones once, and as already mentioned by the Caveman, Bugs used orange ones.

Orange is a good look on this game. I have a set of orange bats in my parts box, but they are the standard W logo ones. Might have to give them a try in mine when I get to it.

I will find some original W bats and measure them.  I just like the look and it has that 'Flintstones' feel to it....If they are a smidge longer we'll just keep it between ourselves!..

Below are some pics of the backbox.  When Marco first saw the game he commented about the speaker panels.  I have no idea but it seems that there are plain black ones going around and the coloured ones.  Johnwartjr is making some enquires to find out the story...

Also the final pic is from under the playfield...It seems that perhaps someone on the production line had a sense of humor, or its a secret WMS code!

Thanks Jeff,

Next time it will be playable so you can have a game or three!

Couple more pics.  Mostly back together.  I'm waiting on some bumper caps from O/S and I need to source the plastic which goes ontop of the spinning disk..

White rubbers really brighten up any playfield. Not that Flintstones needs it, but it looks awesome.

Marty - I love seeing work like this - top job so far and nice detailed photo's.

The white rubber looks great , but I suggest you use black rubbers up in The Machine so that the back corner blends in much better.

I also used some cable ties on certain rubbers in The Machine to stop the balls getting stuck in there , which can happen sometimes -see here for a guide as to what I did.... http://home.kooee.com.au/brainsnap/flintstones3.htm ......about halfway down the page.

I don't think I need to say awesome effort once again Marty.

Where did you source the flipper bats from?  They look nice and I wouldn't mind a set for myself I think.

Also, I'd be interested to hear the story behind the artwork on the speaker grilles as well.  My first FS machine had the artwork, my current machine doesn't.  It would be good to know whether it was a European thing, so far it seems to be the ex-Euro machines that have the artwork more than others.  My 1st machine was a Euro import, 2nd one is an old Jap machine.

Flipper bats were purchased locally from TPF.  They were about $7.00 each (from memory).  Bit more expensive than the standard bats, but worth it IMO.

Whilst reassembling I've discovered that a wireform guide was missing completely.  Was not lost during de-construction but seems to be missing from the game.  No idea why, but at a whopping cost of $1.00 I manufactured a new one this morning.  Easy fix!

Flintstones is now finished.

Everything worked 100% at first fire up which is always pleasing!

Still need to try to source a couple of plastics, but at least we can enjoy the game now..
