Title: Gottlieb Joker Poker (SS) High End Restoration
Post by: Strangeways on July 11, 2018, 09:48:56 PM
This is another restoration that started around 2014. !@)

Objective

This machine was waiting on a number of components to align. First the Backglass (CPR) and then the Playfield (CPR). The cabinet was reasonable, but that's irrelevant - This was always going to be a High End (NIB) Restoration. Stencils for the game became available, so we started immediately.

Condition ReportStarting base was reasonable ;

Cabinet - 7/10 - Had some funky wiring and button for Free Play. Paint was faded, but not too bad for a 40 year old game.
Playfield - 6/10 - Typical wear for a game considered to be one of the best Gottliebs ever produced !
Backglass - 4/10 - Faded.Electronics - 3/10 - Boards are old, worn, tired and will be replaced with a Pascal board.

Before Photos

The day I stripped the machine, preparing the cabinet for a repaint as the weather had been VERY kind.

Before I strip the cabinet, I remove the front door assembly, as that's where the original colour and finish can be located. The finish is always important as the correct match. At this point, I take the entire lower cabinet to my paint supplier, who will skillfully match the color and finish on the spot.

Fast Forward - The base is done and I immediately move to the Red stencil ;

.. and then the black ;

This cabinet is done and was the LAST of the 6 cabinets I completed. Next Update - Playfield !

Looking great Nino, as usual. When you get the paint supplier to match the cabinet color and finish, how much paint do you buy and what type is it ?

Thanks for the kind words.

I use Automotive Acrylics in a "Protech" can as supplied by "Paintmobile" in Preston Victoria. Usually, 2 litres is enough for the base - 4 coats. There's always leftovers. 500ML for each of the colours, but in this case, the red is an EXACT match for Sky Jump - so I bought 1 Litre and it has painted the JP and 2 X Sky Jumps.

The "brand" - "Protech" - I don't know if it is common or not. My late Father has been buying paint from "Paint Mobile" since they first started in Preston. Decades ago ! So I KNOW this paint is always excellent in finish and I KNOW how to use it to achieve results. I use methods handed down, and this system works well for me. No trade secrets - so happy to answer questions. I have sent a few restorers down there to mix paint and they have had success with their repaints.

Stunning work.
One of Gott best titles, I haven't got one but lucky that a good friend has one . Great fun game to play and yours is going to look even more desirable once it's finished. #*#

Hey Nino,
Do you still "spatter" the white base coat before stenciling.

Long time between drinks but my attention has been back on some High End games which I've made steady progress on. In this case, the Joker Poker has been resumed and it is time to turn my attention to the baseboard transformer panel. It is a standard affair with original parts and unbelievably, correct fuses installed !

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20057_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20058_resize.jpg)

That crusty old EMI filter will be gone soon !

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20059_resize.jpg)

A mixture of original 1N914 Switching diodes and what appears to be a 1N4148 (modern equivalent).

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20062_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20065_resize.jpg)

All of which will be replaced. First the baseboard is sanded, and the diodes are replaced with 1N4148 ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20066_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20067_resize.jpg)

Mains fuse holder is replaced with an original NOS fuse holder. The old one looked ok, but looking closely - there's corrosion.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20068_resize.jpg)

Moving on to the connectors. Nice and furry !

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20069_resize.jpg)

Replaced all pins in all connectors ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20071_resize.jpg)

Transformers are cleaned and polished. I don't need to paint them as they are fine. But I do dismantle them and polishe the mounting brackets and screws.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20075_resize.jpg)

Correct fuses and laminated original fuse card stapled ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20074_resize.jpg)

The Bridge rectifier plate is re plated as well as the utility outlet - which is disabled, but re installed for aesthetic purposes.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20076_resize.jpg)

The completed base board - ready for testing and installation. New EMI filter installed and I will install a new power cord.

The Door and Tilt assembly is the next part of the restoration. As with almost all doors of this era, it is well worn, dirty and needs to have some rusted parts replated ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20077_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20081_resize.jpg)

You can see the white powder = Surface corrosion on most of the metal parts.

Tilt assembly ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20079_resize.jpg)

I will start a new thread on my in house plating setup, but for this thread I'll show the finished plating. This is done on my bench with a plating setup I've been using for around 10 years now.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20088_resize.jpg)

Even the internal bracket of the coin entrance plate is plated !

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20092_resize.jpg)

Re assembly - Everything except the internal door skin is replated. The internal door skin is cleaned and polished by hand.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20093_resize.jpg)

Internal is completed ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20094_resize.jpg)

The door skin itself is NOT polished - but regrained as per original finish. I do this with a Green Scotchbrite and Windex.

Moving on to the playfield swap. Joker Poker is a busy playfield for its time, so there's a lot of work ahead of me !

First I always document the process before doing anything. So there's 100 or so photos to reference when I re assemble.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20105_resize.jpg)

A question I'm always asked is "How do you know hat screw goes where ? I refer back to the photos ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20128_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20131_resize.jpg)

Drop Target Assemblies - 15 Drop Targets across 3 Banks. Lot's of work here ;

This spring will have to be replaced !

There is some surface corrosion in the form of the white "powder" which will wipe off. There is no corrosion or rust on the underside at all.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20164_resize.jpg)

Assemblies removed, the GI Return is mapped out to be transferred to the new playfield. All the lamp sockets will be replaced.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20173_resize.jpg)

The playfield is stripped, although most of the parts will be replaced, I need the wire guides and other parts ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20177_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20179_resize.jpg)

This process quick, so I can move to the new playfield ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20174_resize.jpg)

GI Braid installed ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20175_resize.jpg)

I'm replacing the original Lamps Strips with standard Lamps sockets. No good having all the lamp sockets replaced with their lamps lighted perfectly, and the globes in the original strip faded.So I map out where I want to install the individual sockets ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20195_resize.jpg)

Each socket has the tab plating removed on the wire wheel, then I dip in flux ;
(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20197_resize.jpg)

Then I can pre solder the lamp prior to installing and soldering to the fitted GI Braid

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20200_resize.jpg)

I had to run the Braid across each individual socket, keeping it as neat as possible.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20201_resize.jpg)

I replace the bare braid that is raised throughout the playfield with insulated wire. Looks neater and reduces any accidental short.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20203_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20204_resize.jpg)

Now ready for the wiring loom.

Drop Target Rebuild is crucial to the game. The mechanisms are completely stripped and rebuilt. Obviously the targets are replaced, and in most cases the springs as well. All parts are washed in the ultrasonic cleaner and then polished. Some corroded parts and / or parts that may have worn Zinc Plating will be replated.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20225_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20226_resize.jpg)

New PBR Targets - will be installed with new springs.

Whilst working on the underside of the playfield, I sometimes flip the playfield and work on the topside just to break things up a bit. This is a CPR Gold playfield. First thing I want to do is pre-drill all the playfield holes to a larger size and also remove the collar of clear from the hole.

The ball trough guides are replated. They look awesome installed !

Back to the underside of the playfield and time to replace the switch matrix diodes to 1N4148 ;

Finishing off the playfield, I chose to use the white Spot Target rather than the standard Purple one. The purple target face detail looks strange with the gold lettering. I much prefer the white.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20248_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20249_resize.jpg)

Often new playfields may be accurate with hole placement, but with flipper assemblies, I often change the mounting holes of the base plates. The most important part of the process is to centralize the flipper shafts themselves, because if you don't, they won't have the correct distance and positioning.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20250_resize.jpg)

This is where the assembly needs to be mounted ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20251_resize.jpg)

Here is the flipper shoe. The diameter is less than the diameter of the hole in the playfield. Here is how to centralize it.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20252_resize.jpg)

I wrap some tape around the diameter of the Shoe ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20253_resize.jpg)

and now it is dead center !

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20254_resize.jpg)

I can now fit the flipper base over the centralized shoe ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20255_resize.jpg)

Plunger and link has been replaced ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20256_resize.jpg)

Almost done under the playfield

Time to move on to connectors, and they are the usual affair - Corroded and broken. All the pins will be replaced.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20266_resize.jpg)

Finished connector (one of several ) will look like this ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20267_resize.jpg)

The light panel - The lamps sockets were ok, but not good enough. I'm going to repaint the panel.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20268_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20269_resize.jpg)

Undercoat ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20270_resize.jpg)

Topcoat - Flat White

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20271_resize.jpg)

Sanding of the rear of the panel ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20272_resize.jpg)

Wiring is cleaned in the Ultrasonic Cleaner. The braid is replaced with all the lamp sockets.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20273_resize.jpg)

.. and we are done !

At the point where the game is at the finish line, and it is time to fix the small issues and tune the game in. This is where you can find problems that you don't when you start the restoration. When testing the game, the knocker would not work and the way the Pascal Board works is that the game won't be playable with a "failed coil", which is this case the board detects the coil as open. After following the schematic, and investigating the wiring loom, it was easy to see why it was not working ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/JokerPokerNF/JP%20NF%20289_resize.jpg)

The wire has deliberately been cut at some stage. Easy Fix.

Moving on to testing the game - everything was basically spot on - which I would expect after the amount of work has gone into this restoration. So many new parts. I love looking at the playfield !

Small details - The metal playfield plate that sits at the end of the cabinet was chrome plated. Took 6 weeks (I did have a fair about of metal that was plated), but it is better than new.

Apron was refinished and new decal installed ;

CPR Backglass - really finishes the game off !

For some dumb reason, I forgot to paint the splatter effect on the cabinet. Mask up the cabinet and after a short session, the cabinet now looks as it should. Some other small issues to attend to, and finally, FINALLY, the game is done. I'm REALLY proud of this restoration. It looks and plays like new.

I've got a lot of photos of the completed machine to add, so there will be a few updates to follow - just finished photos. Enjoy !

All metal parts were re-plated and polished. Even parts that are not seen.
