Title: BEAKY'S NEW STNG RESTO (STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION)
Post by: Caveoftreasures on July 15, 2010, 10:04:34 PM
One more sleep til Beaky's Star Trek- The Next Generation widebody arrives.  $#$

I will be picking it up at 9am Friday morn and dropping it off to him soon after.

I have lent Andy my 2nd Next Generation until his arrives, and luckily Andy serviced my machine for me and made it look 1 million dollars.

A good mate of mine, Martyn from the Gold Coast, scourced me a Project Next Gen, at the right price.

So, look at this thread and watch Beaky (Andy) turn a project Next Gen into a restored Beauty.  ^^^

Photos added friday 16th July !  ^^^ ^^^ ^^^

Its been a long wait for this one. 7 months LOL
I have owned it for a month or 2 but i have been waiting for delivery.
Any way a big thank you to Brett & Martyn for sourcing this pin.
The restore will go in the cue. After I finish the LAH then I will get stuck into the bk2000.

spent several hours getting Andys new STNG up n running today. there is nothing the man cant fix. It was quite satisfying bringing the Next Gen back to life after 10 years of being dormant in a warehouse !  ^^^

Andy shld place all the photos i took of the machine on the thread soon and u will get to see the project STNG straight from the container.

The playfield is great, all the boards are perfect, everything works and Beaky shld start stripping the machine down and will perform his magic.

I talked him into doing the full resto on the STNG instead of the Black Knight 2000.
(I knew once i got him started on it, he couldnt help himself  *)* *)* *)* *)* *)*

Anyway, the next post will be Andy's and hopefully (hint hint) he will add the photos.  ^^^ ^^^ ^^^

There were a couple of issuses with the boards, the display driver board had a blown bridge rectifier and the audio board had a dry joint on one of the caps which was stopping the speaker in the cab working.

the next problem i have is there is no power getting to the opto boards. There is power leaving the driver board in the back box but no power getting to the opto boards under the playfield. I am checking for a break in the wire to the opto boards.

any way here are some photos

Well, she is a bit dirty and in need of a little love n care, but i know exactly just how good this machine is going to come up.

A new set of playfield plastics, a treasure cove polish after a full stripdown, maybe even a cabinet redecall job, and this machine is going to look brand new. Obviously, need flipper kits n coils etc etc. Judging by the Last Action Hero job i have seen Andy do, this machine is going to be transformed greatly !

Cant wait to see this one transformed !  ^^^

ok i found the cut wire for the optos, some one had at one stage hard wired the 12volt wires to the opto board on the ball trough. then they had cut the wires off.
when i inspected the opto board i found 5 of the 7 leds missing and when i powered it up only 1 of the 2 leds left worked so i removed the faulty led an fitted 6 new opto leds fitted a new plug and socket and all 7 optos in the ball trough register in the switch test.

i also have found part of the mech that drops the top drop target either missing or broken so i will inspect bretts to see what part is missing and then see if i can buy or make one.

more work tomorrow.

ok, I have started with a few little bits n' pieces,
After i cleaned the cannons they where very pale and faded, so i have resprayed them. getting the colour i got was a fluke, I started with an off the shelf Dusk Grey and added some Brunswick Green a little at a time until i got the colour.

This is the first time i have used the air brush to paint more than primer.
The Klingon ship will be next.

here is what a new one looks like(http://www.marcospecialties.com/mmMARCOSPEC/Images/A-17750.jpg)

followed by before then after shots

My eldest son helped me lift the playfield out and has been helping me strip and bag all the parts. He has really become interested in repairing pinballs lately.

i will start with some pics of the inside of the cabinet.
What can i say but dirty rusty & broken glass.

In the last photo you can see the switch i used to replace the missing door switch, of course this will be replaced.

the boards will get the full treatment
the boards have no hacks and only needed minor repairs to get every thing working.

to say the playfield is dirty would be an under statement

I have removed every thing i could from the top of the playfield, what is left needs to be undone from underneath.
the subway ramp gets in the way of all the nuts except for the flippers, wood & ball trough. Next Time I do a next gen i will remove the subway ramp first.

I was suprised to find mould under the playfield.

yep sure was.
I have some photos but i will post them after the corrosion has been removed so i can put the before and after photos.

some of the inserts under the mylar had some brown on them, looks like it has been burnt, i am assuming the adheasive on the mylar has gone brown, there also was a bubble in 1 of the pieces of mylar.
Title: Re: BEAKY'S NEW STNG RESTO (STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION)
Post by: beaky on August 13, 2010, 03:28:30 AM
so i removed all the mylar with no problems at all. No insert decal damage at all.
I used a product called "goo gone" I imported some from the U.S.A. and it was well worth it.
you judge for your self.

The playfield has been cleaned but has not been polished yet. I started with baby wipes and then gave it the nifti  & magic erasor treatment.

I was suprised how vibrant the colours are on this playfield. $#$

there is a picture close to the top of this page with the brown on the millions insert, forgot to take a close up.

How hard was it to get the "Goo gone" - I 've seen it mentioned elsewhere with glowing reports but never found it is Aus.
I have a recalcitrant piece of mylar that I can't budge.

Can you share the details of how you got it?

There is another product called Goof Off which you can get at Bunnings etc but it is much harder and dissolves things.

good old egay. here is a link for one of the over seas sellers.http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GOO-GONE-citrus-grease-gum-sticker-tar-REMOVER-cleaner-/300440632614?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0 (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GOO-GONE-citrus-grease-gum-sticker-tar-REMOVER-cleaner-/300440632614?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0). its not cheap but its cheaper than repairing the art work on the playfield.

when i use it i have the playfield on a slight angle so as i peel the mylar off it seaps under the next bit of mylar. It was on the playfield for a while and it didn't disolve any paint.

ST TNG is definitely one of the hardest machines to recondition. There's a few upgrades that can be done to the Aux Driver board and also replace the cannon wiring looms.

Great progress so far !

I dunno if you can get this stuff on your continent.. I know I can't ship spray cans overseas...

This stuff makes Goo Gone look like water.

I use the freeze spray method on DP playfields, followed by this stuff, and the glue comes off super super easy.

the beauty with goo gone is it doesn't damage the paint work, how long can you leave that stuff on out of the can johnwartjr?
Title: Re: BEAKY'S NEW STNG RESTO (STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION)
Post by: Wotto on August 17, 2010, 08:53:19 PM
I have used Orange Solvent for years, before it became 'commercially' available  and had great success with it removing glue- especially after mylar removals.
I am sure it is the same as JWJ's spray version - or at least similar concept.
I never 'left it on' long , and it always gave good results - easily.

I have been told that it WILL remove paintwork but man, in my experiences , you would have to rub hard and long for that to happen.

Title: Re: BEAKY'S NEW STNG RESTO (STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION)
Post by: johnwartjr on August 17, 2010, 10:35:50 PM
I've never had to leave it on the playfield very long, the glue comes off quickly. So, I'm not certain how long you'd be able to leave it on the playfield. As with any solvent, regardless of how 'mild' it is, or seems to be, you don't want to leave it on there any longer than you have to.

I also use it to remove adhesive from cabinets. I've had more than my fair share of container games where the guy packing the containers taped the heads down with that crap brown packaging tape that leaves residue all over the place. Also is good to remove old adhesive from ramps and decals before reapplying them etc.

The playfield came up a treat. The key is the treasure cove attachments. U can get polish from anywhere, but its the treasure cove drill attachments that are the winners here. They were designed well by the guys in the USA.  ^^^

The polishing made a huge difference to that playfield. Cant wait to see the next few resto steps. Well done Andy !  ^^^ ^^^ ^^^

I have been removing all the corrosion and whats left of the zinc plating off all the under playfield parts.
I have decided to go with nickle plating all the parts instead of zinc plating.
here are some of the parts that i have cleaned ( they still need an acid dip to get metal ready for the nickle plating)
Title: Re: BEAKY'S NEW STNG RESTO (STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION)
Post by: beaky on September 16, 2010, 01:51:10 AM
some parts have come up looking nice but there are a lot of little spots where there is no zinc (even though you may not be able to see them)
also some of the parts in the following pictures still need some parts replaced. I just took the photos of what goes with what so excuse the dirty spoons and so on.
Even though they have been cleaned some parts still have rust.
Then there are parts that have to be replaced, like the drop target assembly

HI,

Have you tried removing the rust with electrolysis prior to nickle plating?

I've been removing the rust from the fly high playfield parts using electrolysis. (slow process)
Now looking at how to get them replated. (with ofcouse a bit more sanding prior)

Thanks and Regards,

Great work Beaky !

One tip with the ball trough - While you have it out, have a look at where the balls sit. On the left hand side, it is worn and the last ball in the trough may simply sit in the "groove". Grab a half moon file, and file that section smooth, so the ball cannot sit in that wear spot.

I have decided to have the playfield clear coated buy a fellow who sprays cars and street machines.
