I love the smell of EMs in the morning  <..>

Years ago I picked up a container CFTBL from Italy, it reeked of second hand smoke

EM smell is unmistakable, and 90's wms/bally headboxes have a distinctive smell as well

The 90s era DMD smell is tough to remove :) Everything has to be cleaned. Everything. With cleaners that are not all that nice on your hands.

What makes this smell? All my EM's have got it ? Is it the continous arcing of contacts or the timber used or maybe the cotton covered insulation on the cables.
Anyone out there know?

Old pins smell, just like old people smell. Your getting close to being an EM yourself Spurry.

Always wanted to know the exact answer ! I think it was the contacts arcing and the smell of lubrication. Some machines that have been stored for a long period of time smell "old" !

Still - It is instantly recognizable

In train tunnels that electric trains use the characteristic smell you get is from ozone, a variant of oxygen that is O3 compared to the standard O2. It's produced by the arching around the moptor contacts. I think it might be the same story with EMs.  Don't know how it lasts if they aren't played for a long while.
