Title: New Posts
Post by: felixthadog on October 14, 2008, 03:29:30 PM
Is there a New Posts button that I can use to show all of the threads with new posts in them?  #$# Other forums that I visit have such a button, it makes life much easier and I don't miss out on any new posts  %$%

Noticed a few times the 'show unread posts' option does not always work.  It sometime does but sometimes finds none even when there are several (I have to manually search through each topic)
The 'show new replies' seems to work all the time though  #$#

When you hit the "refresh" button on your browser, hold down the shift key... this will force the browser to completely re-load the page, and not use anything in memory (or the cache)

I can't say it has ever happened to me... so, what version of IE or Firefox (or Google Chrome, Safari, etc...) are we all using... this may help solve the problem.

To find the version: Click on "Help" and then "About" in your browser. (In IE 7 onwards, if you do not have the "Help" menu, click on "Tools", then "Toolbars" and then "Menu Bar" - this will show the help menu)

I'm using Firefox version 3.0.3

But I will test this in IE 8 beta.

Certainly a strange error. I have not had the issue since updating Firefox to 3.0.3.. Coincidence ?
Title: Re: New Posts
Post by: Pinball Fixers on October 19, 2008, 03:17:35 PM
Realistically, the browser should make no difference at all. But I have seen many strange things happen on different browsers viewing the same page! IE handles Javascript differently, and more slowly than the others, so this can cause it's own issues. Also, IE has it's own set of rules, and until recently (IE 8 beta onwards) didn't really follow the standards like the others do.

But, the "Show New Posts" link should be DataBase driven and not dependant on the browsers. All it needs to do is log the time you were on last, and then search for any new posts since then.

I'll logout now, and come back in IE 8 beta and see what happens...
Title: Re: New Posts
Post by: Pinball Fixers on October 19, 2008, 03:24:37 PM
OK, just tried it in IE 8 beta, and it does not bloody work!!! Yet in Firefox it works fine... even after logging back in on Firefox, I still can see any unread messages that I left there for the test!

My suggestion... USE FIREFOX!!! IE is crap anyway... and Firefox adherers to the standards. Plus, it's a much safer and faster browser.

I noticed that the forum time was 1 hour behind real time so maybe that was having an effect on the posts to fetch from the server.

Anyway, try now and see if it makes a difference.

The 'Show unread posts since last visit' link is not working properly for me, I have missed a lot of new posts in various sections on the forum even though the Unread posts link is showing no new messages. I have also noticed that some of the Unread posts are disappearing from the list after I have viewed a single post. For example, if I click the Unread posts link to see the message list, I might see 10 new messages. That makes sense Nug, but that is not the case for me. The posts are definitely different, there are unique threads in the list but for some reason when I press the Unread posts link some of the posts in the list have disappeared. I have noticed that if I go in to the section where the "disappeared" post was created, it doesn't show up with a <new> icon next to it?

Matthew

P.S. I've also noticed that the "Unsure" smiley has disappeared, I'm lost without it!

I have done some more testing today (thanks to everyone for the sh!tload of posts  %.%) and noticed that although posts are no longer disappearing from the Unread posts list, there are some posts that are not appearing in the Unread posts list at all  !!! After reading all the posts in the Unread posts list, I then have to go through each section individually to find the posts that I have still not read. Fo example, I just went through 18 Unread posts, then navigated to the Introduction section and found 2 "new" posts that did not appear in the Unread posts list (and those new posts were older than some of the posts in the Unread posts list).

Fo example, I just went through 18 Unread posts, then navigated to the Introduction section and found 2 "new" posts that did not appear in the Unread posts list (and those new posts were older than some of the posts in the Unread posts list).

Matthew

I noticed a similar issue. Then if you log out and then log in - it then adds those posts to the "unread posts" heading..

Try again now. I have reset all session counters in the database and repaired some tables that had errors, as per the instructions given to me by the SMF discussion forum.

Please let me know if you get the problem again.

Still not working for me  !!! Each time I click the Unread posts link, it shows me 2 less posts than what was there before (e.g. 9 in the list, select a post, click Unread posts link, now 7 in the list).

Matthew

Hi Matthew. Can you please test this out again? I made a change to the cached session settings so that it doesn't use database driven sessions anymore.

Well that sucks  @.@

Obviously the testers of the forum software didn't do their job properly  (((

We are behind in the versions of the forum software, and Creech did try to upgrade it recently, but it did not work.

We will get it working...  ^^^

Nino & Creech,

I hope that you have not taken my dig at the forum software testers as a dig at this forum, it is definitely not! This forum rocks  #*# I am a software tester so it is in my nature to get peeved by bugs that should never have made it to production, and I find it difficult to believe that this problem would have been accepted if it was made known to the developers.

Mate, I work in IT. I have a thick skin as I get these "digs" made everyday. I did not see your comments as a dig - believe me.  :lol I have had far worse thrown at me over the years.

This is an issue that has plagued alot of SMF forums. I have looked through the SMF discussion groups and we are not the only ones with this issue. I recently upgraded to 1.1.7 successfully after having initial problems as Nino indicated.

So we have the latest version and I made a change on the weekend so we are not using database driven sessions but we still seem to have a problem.

I apologise for the inconvenience caused and I'm still trying to find an answer. I will make a post tonight on the SMF forums asking for help.

Does logging off/on help at all?

Not at mate.. Again, I work in IT so I see this kind of issue (but not with webdev etc) a fair bit.

I guess we all just want to get what we paid for  ^^^

I wouldnt worry about it - if it werent for the bugs then thered be a lot less people working in IT!

I know dick squat about IT - i did computers in school with basic and machine code - first time i got onto Windows i typed in RUN thinking the world still worked in basic - LOL!
Man - those emitocons doing the "we are not worthy" would have crashed my zx81 big time, then again, so would an email.

New posts doesnt always work for me properly either, but im used to that, it doesnt bother me, i HAVE to use Microsoft so i can open other peoples files they send me. The "soft" in Microsoft is very apt

Ok heres what ive noticed with this,

If i click unread posts, log out and then back in again i lose all that remained unread in previous log in.

Also - posts that i have posted that then get a post from another member dont always show up.

Hope these finer points help you guys..

Yeah I know it's frustrating guys.

I have done heaps of checking on the SMF forums for an answer but nothing has come up. I did post a question on there a while ago but must admit I haven't checked for any responses as I got caught up in the Christmas hoo ha and just plain forgot.

I will go check tonight and thanks for the reminder.

You're using firefox aren't you Nino? I find there are very few probs with it, every now and then I find a thread with an unread post not coming up in the "Show unread posts..." but it's pretty rare. Not sure if IE has more probs??

I use Firefox, and I've had no problems for a while. All defaults are set in the options..

Firefox seems to handle it better. For some reason, IE does not remove read posts if you go back to the "Unread posts" page by pressing the back button. Weird!

OK guys, I found a workaround/short term fix on the SMF forums for this issue which I have implemented. Please keep an eye on this problem and let me know if it is now fixed/better/worse.

That's a good sign. It might be picking up those that you missed before. The guys over at SMF suggested this might happen.

I've been doing some testing on IE and the workaround appears to have fixed the problem, I can't see any missed posts in any of the sub-sections  #*# I'll let you know if the problem re-occurs or I find anything else unusual.

Cheers,

Now I'm stumped as the last fix I applied was meant to be "the fix".

I'll check the SMF forums tonight.

Just thinking out aloud - If you logout, then login - Do the posts appear ?

I notice that new posts since I my last login (I'm still logged in) do not appear. But I sometimes stay logged in for 45 minutes or more.

No, logging out and logging back in did not cause the posts to appear  *!@

Here's what I noticed.

I login and read all the new posts until I have no more "new" posts
I then start posting. The threads I've posted on don't appear as "new" post. I think this is because "I" was the last user that posted in that thread. ie. It is not a "new" post I have not read - but a post "I" made.

Yes, that's normal behaviour.

I can't find any software releases that may fix this issue so it's going to have to go on the backburner for a while. Sorry!

Felix, have you tried using Firefox instead?

No problem, I prefer IE to Firefox so I'll just have to live with it. Thanks for investigating  ^^^
