Post by: Wotto on September 10, 2011, 07:22:36 PM
Hi all

Starting this thread tonight as I may not get time between now and Wednesday.
This will be the official Rainman( Wotto ) and Butterbean( Tony T ) thread for our US trip to The Pacific Pinball Expo.

Tony and I plan to do our best to post as much info and as many images as time allows us to on the trip for your enjoyment.
Our itinerary is ......

Depart Wed 14th Sydney to LA.
Arrive Wed 14th in LA  - early AM

Wed afternoon -  we have a 'special' pinball private event that has been made available to us - I cant say a lot BUT if we are allowed to take pics and discuss it I will.
Thursday  - Saturday = Knottsberry Farm and Six Flags Magic Mountain
Sunday = Day in LA / Hollywood.
Monday to Vegas for 3 nights - PHOF and other pinball related adventures at The Riviera Casino
Thursday - drive to San Rafael for Pacific Pinball Expo - will be there all of Friday and Satrday and half of Sunday - it is open 10am to midnight  ^^^
Sunday  - 10pm flight out of LAX.

Tony has graciously secured us tickets to the Thursday night pre-opening party - NOT open to the general public  #*#
I will do me best to report back any info about WoZ as Pinball Jack has a 1.5 hour seminar on the Friday at PPE which we will attend.

We are attempting to cram in a whole lot of stuff on what should be a very busy and fun trip, we have tickets to shows in Vegas, we will try and get into SFO city and enjoy all the tourist trappings.

Look forward to entertaining you all  ()

Well boys - we are here - landed around 5am Sydney time.

Here we are leaving Sydney - see if you can pick which of us is the 'unhappy flyer'

These big bastards kept us up in the air - they are the size of a fricking bus .....( A380 )

I watched movies and tried to sleep , Tony found 2 pinball machine games on the screen and was hooked....

Not long after landing we jumped in our Chevy Impala and were on part of this road systm - the roads here are just FANTASTIC.

racefan - I went to take a pic of a BEUATIFUL Mustang and then it was gone by the time I got the camera  ^.^
Nick - we are about to leave to visit that 'special place' in 10 minutes  #@# && #@#

You never look happy near planes, Wotto. I hope you packed a few extra pairs of underpants  %.%

Looks like you got some good seats for the flight - plenty of leg room !
Title: Re: Pacific Pinball Expo - Let the fun begin.....
Post by: Wotto on September 15, 2011, 04:53:01 PM
Nino - we got front seats - extra leg room from a mate of mines sister who works at Qantas ticketing  ^^^

Well - this afternoon we were PRIVILEGED to meet one of the NICEST USA collectors you could meet - and WHAT A SET UP , and WHAT A COLLECTION he has.
We were completely, and I mean UTTERLY blown away......

Now I definitely have his permission to show images here BUT I cant tell you his name or where he is located.
He allowed us to take as many pics and play whatever we wanted to.

Here is part of the entry to his 'rooms'....

Walk down the alley and enter the diner ....

OH you want to see games - sorry......what about a NIB Hercules?

Its upstairs mixed in amongst dozens of rare and beautiful games....

Apparently the ONLY T.K.O on the planet ( head box is seperate and the game IS complete and VERY good nick )

Sick of those games upstairs - then lets go down to the pinball room and play one of the 70+ games there - ALL of them in near excellent condition.

Here is a unique game - you press both flipper buttons to fire the ball out from between the flippers - aimed at a line of pool balls, you hit 'hidden targets' under the board and then try and keep the ball in play to hit it back up there and clear the rack - ALL shots are blind.

Got one of these Pinfan?

Who likes/ remembers these old games ?

Another entry to the diner area....

More games anyone ?

Did someone say HUO Medieval Madness?

And saving the best till last......Tony playing one of the 9 ORIGINAL Kingpins.....did I mention it is serial number ONE  ()

To say we were just amazed at visiting this place is a massive understatement.
I have HEAPS more pics but will leave it at what I have shown - the owner said we could show whatever we wanted but I will just leave it at this.

Title: Re: Pacific Pinball Expo - Let the fun begin.....
Post by: tonyt on September 15, 2011, 10:02:43 PM
We were both completely blown away by what we saw today and the fantastic hospitality, trip was worth it just for this and this was only our first day.

Playing King Pin was very surreal for me. This is a game that I hope gets remade. Looking forward to speaking with Gene Cuningham at PPE to get the updates. Have thrashed playing this game on the emulator, but like all games, nothing beats playing them first hand.

I absolutely loved playing King Pin.

- Great theme - gangster (shows that non licensed themes could still work)
- Game has excellent flow and plays very fast
- Love Mark Ritchie games with his signature criss cross ramps like Diner and Fish Tales, great for setting up shots
- Excellent animation on the DMD and great sounds
- Excellent artwork IMO
- Ball lock is call, one of the ramps raises to reveal the hideout.
- Liked the various modes
- Sudden death is a very cool feature. During the game you build up time during certain features for this. There is a bar near the bottom of the playfield that shows how much time you are accumulating for sudden death. At the end of the game you get an extra ball to play and the time you get depends on how much time you have accumulated for sudden death. You score well for the various shots. As the sudden death bar gets lower you start to die and the flippers become weaker and weaker until they completely die

More later guys - off to Knottsberry Farm shortly - lifes tough here  :lol
Title: Re: Pacific Pinball Expo - Let the fun begin.....
Post by: Wotto on September 16, 2011, 12:02:35 PM
Well boys - a pinball free day.....but still a great day.
Went to Knottsberry Farm Amusement Park, it is about a 10 minute drive from where we are staying.....

One of the first rides was a brand new ride called Windseeker - it is a 300 foot tower where seats are risen to the top and spin.
I dont do spin rides.
Tony does...........( looks like a handlebar from a pensioner scooter ! )

Tony then went on the drop ride .
I dont do drop rides
Tony does.......look at "Roy relaxed" here would ya !
Cheer up mate - we will play some pinball again reall soom I promise ya.

I spotted the 'Arcade' ( I can speak spanish so it's OK - I knew what the sign meant )....
NO pinballs in there boys......couple of dance machines and car games - as usual these days

Tony later went on the Pony Express.
I dont do Pony rides
Tony does.
Looking preeeeetty darn happy there straddling that horse Tony !
What ARE you doing to it - look at the guys face next to you  #@#

The bloody mother in law was at it again - following me around the US.

OK OK - so I do go on some rides - and this next one is a KILLER.
It is called Xcelerator - you sit in little Chev's

The ride accelerates from 0-130+ kph in around 2 seconds.
The take off speed is just absolutely insane.

Top Hat tower is 200+ feet high.

We went back on later in the afternoon and got front seat which was HEAPS better and so we could get this shot for you all.

What the F*CK do they feed the chickens over here - what roids are these things on !

Knotts is currently getting ready for Halloween so the theming around the park is pretty cool right now too..

We found a bar/diner for lunch just over the rode call TGIF - it was very very nicely decorated.
Heaps of random memorobilia around the place.

Notice they finally named a bar after whats in my undies !

Then later I took Tony for one of those famous Johnny Rockets shakes.....these diners are ALWAYS very cool looking and we sat counter-side, classic US style.

You will notice these places are PACKED  :lol
It is actually VERY quiet here at the moment and in Knotts we basically queued for nothing.

Hey V8racefan - how about a Thunderbird ?

Or even our own rental classic  :lol
Chevey Impala - leather interior etc, sunroof - pretty nice actually.

It is 6pm and we will soon head off to Downtown Disney for a feed and a look around - another VERY difficult day guys.
Did I mention the temprature is around 25 and there isnt a cloud in the sky
Hows work all?

Another thing none of you knew is that we brought a 3rd member along on the trip with us, just to help us check out the local eating establishments.
The trouble is that this bloke has been nit-picking the hell out of the burger joints.

Hey V8racefan - check this store out in Downtown Disney.
You go in and buy car bodies and then by all the accessories - and build yourself a car model - they are SWEEEEEEEEEET.
We were very late having dinner tonight and this store closed at 10pm , otherwise I would have got one done.

Car body was $28 and the 'parts' were aound $2-4 a pack, wheels were $4.00 for 2 - it was pretty cheap for what you would end up with.

Wall of parts - there was a few walls full like this.

The work bench....

Not much to show today guys - went shopping at the outlets in northern LA.
Once again we scored some good deals here.

We found this in the carpark for you V8Racefan.

They also have these little trucks around the joint.

A bit of a look at one of the freeway stacks.

And WE are STILL getting ABSOLUTELY RORTED in Australia on petrol pricing- thats 3.99 a GALLON guys - work that out - then get the sh*ts  ^.^

Mmmmmmmmmm - Yummy - NOT.

The thread will be pinball related again as of Tuesday when we get to Vegas and the PHOF - hanging to play some more games.
Tony has just been checking the games list at PPE and they seem to have added Fathom ( one he has not played before ) , Gorgar, IJ ( Stern ) and a few others that werent showing up before  ^^^

In the meantime we are going to Six Flags Magic Mountain tomorrow and then a day around LA city / Hollywood and beach area's on Sunday - I will make sure I get a photo of Tony in with the african american gang members at Muscle Beach flexing his stuff  *)*

The days are long but VERY VERY much fun.

Pinball stories only 2 days away guys I promise.
Tony and I are HANGING to get to vegas to play some games but are having a good time until then.

6 Flags at LA today...another rough day here in the US.
We grabbed Flash Passes and if any of you ever come here - GET THEM.
The normal ride waits were anywhere from 45 minutes to 2+ hours ( for X2 ) - we were getting on rides within around 15 minutes - sometimes within 5-10 minutes - I would not do this park on a weekend day without one- they are $50.00 each person and worth every cent.

Here is Tony in training to take this guys job at 6 flags, not much difference between him and the real guy apart from some biceps and a 14' wingwang :lol

Tony rode Tatsu....

Onboard X2 - front seat today....people reckon this ride is a little intense - PUSSIES they are -  Tony and I were completely relaxed on it

Onboard Goliath - the chick below bombed our photo - how funny's that.

Talking of bombs - this guy was chucking a few.....

Now for the car and truck fans amongst you all.

TOMORROW we will be in Vegas - we are heading to The Riviera casino a day earlier than expected , before we then check in at The Luxor for a few nights - there are apparently 40 or so pins in The Riveiera and we need a 'fix' badly.

Shhesh mate - Did you go to the USA for the rides, or the pinballs

Its a long story, we had to 'extend' the original planned trip by 4 days and had to 'fill in that time' - hence these early days being spent around LA and the fun parks, today we are off to Vegas and will be playing pins tonight and then ALL DAY tomorrow  $#$

Hi all

We have been off the air for 2 days and superbly busy PLAYING PINBALL  ^^^ in Vegas
Just a short post for now as we are off for a feed tonight then to Fremont St for the night - wont be back in room for about another 5 hours from now.
I have HEAPS of pinball pics from the games at The Riviera Casino and also today when we spent around 6 hours at PHOF.

For now gentlemen - welcome to Las Vegas.

Todays WTF photo ......kinda sums up Vegas in one shot  :lol
Tony wanted me to tackle the big yellow bastard  :lol :lol :lol

OK OK - we did play these yesterday in The Riviera....

I have heaps more pics and info on the games from The Riviera and I will post when I get time.

And then today we actually caught up with another Aussie at PHOF - Mike from ArcadePlus.

Hey guys - apart from lack of time I have stacks to show - Tony and I have had a couple of excellent days = ESPECIALLY today from PHOF - met Tim Arnold.
Much more soon ........

Oh and Replicas - these ones are for you - as promised  #*#

Alright guys - it is 12.20am Tuesday morning here and we just got back from Fremont St  - I will step back a couple of days and try and catch you up as best I can.

Sunday we checked out of LA and head to Vegas a day earlier than planned - we HAD to get our pinball fix.  It was an easy 4 hour drive from north of LA to Vegas , including a rest stop and a coffee just over the Nevada border.

Thanks to Tony we decided to stay at The Riviera for one night, before checking into our pre-booked accomodation at The Luxor on Monday afternoon
The Riviera is where we were going  to come to play the pinballs in this casino anyway. Tony used his fine negotiating skills and scored us a great room with some of the BEST views of the Las Vegas Strip.

Cant wait until the night when this view will really be nice.

If that impresses you and you want to stay when you go to Vegas then this is the casino you are looking for.

After check in we re-entered the smoke filled and smelly casino floor and headed for the 'Arcade' which is located on one of the far corners of the complex near the food outlets, it gets a LOT of passing foot traffic and there was often someone playing a game or two, which was good to see. I went back to the games around midnight while Tony scored his beauty sleep and I wasn’t the only one playing, even at that time.

There are 26 pinball games here in total , along with around 6 original arcade games.
Of the 26 games 11 are EM's - EM games were 50c a play.

WILLIAMS
Triple Action, Lucky Ace, Granada, Spanish Eyes.

GOTTLIEB
Jungle King, Ten Up, Playmates, Pro Pool, Subway, Hurdy Gurdy, Palace Guard.

Here are some playfield shots and ONE of the cabs - the PF's were all quite tidy, the BG are as best as can be expected for games from this era but the cabs are very average.

The remaining,  more modern games are....
Taxi, Teed Off, Surfin Safari, Cue Ball Wizard, Nightmare on Elm St, NBA Fastbreak, World Poker Tour, NBA ( Stern ) Lord of the Rings, Rolling Stones, Family Guy, Iron Man, Dark Knight, CSI, and of course a Gottlieb Vegas.

The price to play these is 0.75c for ONE game and $2.00 for 3 games, MOST games were set to 3 balls , a couple were set to 5.
Iron Man had no ballsaver time set into it, neither Tony or I got 'scabs' on any of the games we played leading me to assume the replay percentage is set VERY low.

Here is Tony playing Taxi , note whats going down the driveway in the background as I took the shot !

The condition of the games overall is quite good, MOST play well and very few were broken that we played. Tony played CSi to discover that it had numerous faults however. Cue Ball Wizard had 2 rows out in the display but the game itself played OK. Keeping up my reputation for breaking games Cue Ball Wizard was the first game I dropped coin into, I hit the left upper targets and a rubber broke and then jammed in behind the targets so they couldnt drop down again - LOOKOUT PPE .....better have them techs ready for me !

It is definitely worth some time spent here if you visit Vegas - even as a 'teaser' for PHOF - these games are worth spending some time and coin on.

For those people interested , the arcade cabs were Ms Pacman, Scarmble, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Centipede & Outrun - all in original cabs which was cool to see - I put the highest score of the day onto Galaxian .....a massive 12,000 point game - YAY.

Hey lady - I think I know who ate all the dots .....................and it clearly wasnt Ms Pacman  #@#

After playing the games at The Riviera for a few hours we headed over the road to the old casino - Circus Circus.
Man - that place is LARGE.

We found out the back they have an 'Adventuredome' - it is MASSIVE and has an indoor rollercoaster, indoor water rides as well as stacks and stacks of arcade games.

We then took a walk up The Strip to Treasure Island, watsched the show there , wandered the local casino's and headed back for the night.

Here are some random shots around the area and in casino's - this place is GREAT to photograph.

Later on the way back we heard the noise of those gang-banger 'bouncy cars' heading along the strip.
They drove by and I was annoyed I missed photos of them.
Then we came across the guys parked in a lot on our way back, so I approached them and asked about the cars.
My new best mate 'Leroy Iamgunnapopacapinyourass' Jones told me these 'lowriders' are Buick Regals and he welcomed Tone-Loc from Adelaide and Wott-Dog to the gang.

These cars drive along kind of like that, popping, bouncing, lifting, lowering , front wheels cambered inwardsa at insane angles - it's kinda silly but cool to see.

Great photos mate, but I think those cars are well overdue for a wheel alignment  *)*

It is SO late and Nancy is snoring already - I would LOVE to tell and show the PHOF day we had today but MUST get to sleep.
Today was the BEST day of our trip so far - I will just leave this before turning in for the night as it is 1.30am here.

Just love the pictures, guys. Unless you know someone who has gone overseas and taken pictures like these, it is really hard to capture the moments. I DEFINITELY want to go after seeing all the sights of the USA. Strangely enough, the "pick of the bunch" is the original Taito Space Invaders cabinet. I remember (when I was a child) the day they were unpacked and sent on locations. Walls full of them. Amazing !

You guys are having the time of your lifes. And no shoe shop pictures (bet you are glad about that)
Keep the pic's coming and keep on having a great time.
Also thanks for the pic's.
Darren.

Hi all

Here is an update from our Tuesday ( yesterday here )
The PHOF opens at 11am so we were finally able to have a fairly relaxed morning.

Seeing as I did a 'write up' once before , I have asked Tony to chime in later with his thoughts on the place ( he LOVED it by the way ).
I also had a better experience here this time , the games are still in great nick and play VERY well.

So in no real order - see below.

I had to pry Tony away from this place to go to the PHOF - he just didnt want to leave  ^.^

I had not played Tron before - I only got a couple of games on it and you just cant 'get into' any modern game unless you spend a few hours on it, I did like the appearance of the game, although the LED lights are a little 'dull' - possibly on purpose so they arent blinding ther player?

Now, Rolling Stones gets bagged, but I dont mind it to be honest, the 'non-stop moving Mick' is a little annoying BUT once you realise you have to use him to score 'notes' it makes good sense. As an example I had to score the last 'note' on the right side, so I had to time my flip AS HE STARTED to move so that the ball AND Mick were at the same spot on the playfield at the EXACT same moment in time - I thought this was good as it made the timing of your shot that little bit harder.

I did not play Iran Man or Avatar this time around as I had played IM at The Riviera the night before.

There is an entire row of wedgeheads at PHOF - ALL of them in very decent condition in the playfields and back-glasses - SOME BG's were a little flaky in spots but overallthey were VERY good, also considering that these games are on 12 hours a day EVERY day still to this very day.

I REALLY enjoyed playing this Stern IJ machine - it is very open and has very fast playfield action - it is maybe a little 'easy' but I liked it a LOT more than I thought I would.

Here is a close up example of the condition of one of the older BG's - NICE.

Now here is an EM that I like Nino  %$%

Q-Bert was fun to have a game on - it was a little faulty as the right bank of 2 x targets wasnt working, but I played a game on it to get the feel of those bottom flippers - if the ball goes down there you really have to nail a SWEET shot on it to get it smoothly back into the normal field of play.

A small section of the more modern games here - ALL of them in EXCELLENT condition physically and playwise.

Not sure if Tony liked this Superman game or not - maybe I raved about it too much beforehand.

Mike Bowden in his best Angry Birds attire getting interviewed by 2 girls from LV Uni doing a film on Pinball - how cool   #*#

Tim Arnold doing some repairs - meeting Tim, I found him very nice but I have to say a little odd, I think some of the Americans just talk short and sharp, finish what they are saying and 'move on' - it isnt arrogance, it is just how they communicate , like ' point is made' so thats enough chatter about ( X topic ).

Tim is a little like that - but how cool that he keeps this place going, he was also very keen to be made aware of any faults we came across so he could sort it out. Once again PHOF had a really steady flow of people through it at all times which was excellent to see.

OK OK , a little bit of playfield wear here and there - but NOT much overall in any of the games.

Now - flame suit is on.........I REALLY liked this game - as in I REALLY liked it, I played it a lot and it kept growing on me. I have to say that I like the way most of the modern Stern games 'play'....the flippers are STRONG and the shots can be silky smooth.....I am guessing I am fairly alone in liking Monopoly.

A little game for little people

Here is an example of the Pinbits colour changing LED - it was a REALLY nice effect on this TZ - larger 'knob' than I thought it would be.

I hadnt recalled ever seeing this old little pinball with real mechanical cars on a track in the backbox.

Any ideas anyone?

And for Arcade game lovers amongst us - there are stacks of original cabinets games here to play as well.

Tony with The Pinball Circus - one of only 2 ever produced - $1.00 a game = 5 balls. I got to Video Mode on it this time and it is a cool animation where you fire a 'Human Cannon' through gaps in 'moving walls' ( moving gaps ) - when you miss , the human hits the solid wall and squashes up on the display while a classic SPLAT noice sounds , it was pretty funny.

Hope these are OK - done in a mad rush - we are off for the night to see The Blue Man Group  *)*
More when I can.

Wotto and Tony

Oh - and we visited the Tapout Gym - the actual one where the pro's train in Las Vegas.
It was very empty and no pro's were there ( they go at night if anyone ever goes here - theres a tip )
Lucky , because I was in the mood for kicking Bones Jones ar$e

Tim Arnold looks like he has lost weight ! Cool pictures, Wotto, and High Hand is a very collectible Wedgehead with plenty of drop targets and great artwork - Another card theme like the Hot Hand !

Hi all,

Nancy is currently catching beauty sleep again as I type this.......

Another 'couple of days' catch up here for anyone following this trip.
We are currently in San Rafael CA - drove here today from Vegas - a 9 hour drive including 3 decent stops and the roads here are so damn good we were on freeway the ENTIRE 950km ++ trip - just about door to door.

We are currently in a Travelodge that Tony booked us into as we got here a day earlier than planned so we can check out SFO city tomorrow before attending the PPE 'pre-opening' function tomorrow night  ^^^ That will hopefully allow us time on the games with few crowds  ^^^. The check in lady at the Travel lodge handed us free bullet proof vests and the room has a hotline direct to the local cop station - nice area !

We went and checked out the Embassy Suites where we will be staying for the next few nights at PPE and it looks stunning - clearly I will be posting a lot of pics over the next few nights and will include that........anyway - we need to step back in time a few nights.......

On Monday night we headed for Downtown Vegas - Fremont St.
As I said last time this place is a MUST SEE if you visit Vegas - Tony was completely blown away by it , the atmosphere and the general 'feeling and liveliness' of the place and ESPECIALLY the canopy music shows, there were also 2 or 3 bands on tonight too .......the casinos are MUCH older and inside not as flashy but it is nice to see the old Vegas in them.

This is the entry to Fremont St...I drove here this time and there is super chaep parking at the back of Fremont St - at no time did we feel unsafe ( refer the UFC pics hey guys  :lol )

Here is another shot for you Darren - we are taking this shirt on a US tour !

Life is tough down here let me tell you.....

Excuse the focus but something was making my hand tremble when I went to take this shot.

I always take pics of drummers .....this guy was tight !

No seriously - I was taking a pic of the drummer.

Around 10pm we heard the un-mistakeable intro to Rock and Roll All Night by KISS - the lights all went out and the canopy above played this......

Then this came into it - complete with game sounds  *)*

You have to understand that this canopy is ( I guess ) around 300 metres ( more ? ) in length and has 12.5 MILLION lights making the images up.
To play pinball for 2 days and have it end with this was pretty damn cool.

On Tuesday, our last day in Vegas, we went back to the PHOF - I dropped Tony off and did my own thing for a few hours ( no, not the hookers ) and then came back around 1.30pm to PHOF and we left around 4pm - we had an excellent time at PHOF this time around, although Tony did get to 'experience' the arrogant little kid that I copped here in May this year , without knowing it was the same kid Tony asked me if I had copped the ATTITUDE from the kid at the counter - see how people notice these small things.

We HAD to try a FATBURGER and tonight was the last opportunity to do so.

Thats Chili Cheese Fries right there  - mmmmmmmmm

If you get through one of thier 'Bring a Wheelbarrow' ( to carry it in ) burgers, they give you a certificate and a photo !

After a feed we caught up with our old gang mate from the night before - Yo YO.

We then went into the Gameworks acrade - downstairs under M&M World - there were 3 games in there - Viper Night Drivin, POTC and Soprano's - ONLY VND was working , the other 2 were switched off with 'broken' signs on them - MORE great advertising for pinball. Other than that it had all the modern arcade games you would expect to see......the place was pretty well done though - it looked excellent.

I had never seen one of these before - or even heard of it - a 4 way / 4 play at once PacMan

We then headed down to The Venetian Casino to see The Blue Man Group - what an INSANE show - it isnt for everyone BUT it is VERY VERY funny.
It is 1 hour 40 minutes of 3 guys on stage who dont speak, they are percussionists and use PVC piping , colour , paint and AWESOME graphics and sound effects to just blast you through an hour and a half of musical mayhem. They have some GREAT drummers up top behind them and they also do heaps of funny stuff with food and digital effects - it cannot be described it has to be seen and it was just fantastic.

They said no pictures allowed - but Tony pushed me into it  :lol

Todays car photo comes from our breakfast stop at Denny's in Baker on the way out of Las Vegas.
Obviously rego checks are done every 47 years here.

Tomorrow we head to San Francisco wharf area as we have a free day before the main event, PPE starts for us  #*#

Hi all

OK - we are at The Main Event  ^^^
We had a massive day today.

PPE officially opens tomorrow at 10am - we are booked into the Embassy Suites at San Rafael - the rooms here are EXCELLENT and the hotel is very nice.
The rooms have seperate living and beds - Nancy is gunna crash on the lounge because he reckons I snore  ^.^

Looking down into the hotel lobby and bar area.

We drove ( well I did ) into SFO city this morning and spent a few hours around Pier 39 and Fishermans Wharf where we were able to check out the Musee Mechanique Museum - it is a large building in prime position near Pier 39 that has loads of VERY VERY old amusement machines and some new ones....it is worth taking a 30 second detour and spending 20 minutes or more looking around.

I was able to get some stunning photos going across the Golden Gate Bridge on the way over it - this is the best one.

This actually shows you the fog on the bridge we just came in on - see the top of the bridge tower in the photo - above the sailing boat on the right !

We found parking relatively easily in the area and we wandered around like typical tourists, had a feed at Hard Rock Cafe and headed back to San Rafael around 2.30pm.

Alcatraz Prison Island in the background.

This is the entry to the old time musuem - I asked the attendant how they fund the place as it is right on the water in a very expensive part of SFO and he said that the quarters pay for everything - so a LOT of people must pass through here and play the old machines !

Inside you will find these odd things.....

This kinda reminded me of our trip - sums the whole experience up nicely - the worn out / exhausted man sick of the whinging screaming kid  :lol :lol

Along the way a little further there is a tourist trap called Pier 39 - LOADS of eatery's and some cool shops in there - worth checking out if you come here.

ARE YOU READY TO RUMBLE  ^^^

Tonight we were able to spend 4 hours at PPE before it officially opened.
And THAT was fantastic as it gave us time to check out the show, the games and get photo's without many people around.
We were also given posters, programs and a small / decent feed tonight.

PPE is exactly like you see in images - there are just tonnes of games here.
I didnt expect a lot of DMD's and there arent THAT many.
There is a lot of SS games ( enough to keep me entertained ) and a STACK of EM's and woodies.
As a guess there was probably around 100 - 150 people in the hall tonight.

We got LOADS of game time.

It is a VERY difficult room to photograph - I have done my best.
Here you go people.
I think I broke the last rule  !@)

Can someone explain this crazy wierd-ar$e game to me please  !@#
It seems kind of cool but I have no idea what I am doing.

Tony found the 'Tournament Room' and we hung out in there for around 30 minutes - we realised we couldnt play in here tomorrow much ( if at all ) and we played T2, TZ, Iron Man, Centuar, Joker Poker , Pinball Magic and Joker Poker - all in nice condition.
VERY few people were in here - it was great.

Check the rules - NO practice games !

I had just played this one in the Tournament Room  #@#

They have some DMD's here - probably around 20-30 all up.

And if you play ( one of the 2 ) Trons, then the whole show gets to see how you play as each Tron has an overhead camera projecting your play onto the screen above !@)

AFM has the new coloured DMD running in it and it does look very good.
To me each dot appears slightly larger, I am not sure if this is an illusion or the result of me crazy head having lived with Tony for the last 10 days  :lol

Some random shots

AWESOME backglass on a game I dont enjoy - GREAT backglass actually.

And from my new favourite game  #@#

Now - there is a game here ( and the private collector we visited had one too ) called Jolly Park.
It is a Spanish game based on an amusement park.
It plays VERY NICELY and has some cool shots and excellent 'bumpers' as you will see.
There are only 8 of these in the USA - we have now played 2 of them  *)*

Check it out.
Has anyone of you heard of this game before ?

Part of the upper playfield.

Down on the lower right is the shooting gallery 'drop targets' which can be hit from a flipper midway up the left side of the PF

And these have to be the coolest 'bumpers' I have ever seen - the litle bumper cars wobble around and light briefly when the skirt/ swithc is activated.

Another bonus is that we have found only ONE game to have ONE weak flipper - most games here are playing well.

It has just gone midnight and I am pooped.
Nancy is already gone for the night.

Tomorrow we get to listen / see what the latest is with WOz and I will report back in the evening for you all.

Regards

Wotto & Tony

Hi all

Friday here at 9.30am - while all you guys are snoozing at home.

Another thing they do here as part of the hotel 'deal' is a 2 hour 'happy hour' in the afternoons at the bar.
Free drinks from this menu - it is pretty good.
Although some of the drink names are a bit WTF to us.

Here is where you have the free breakfast - it's real nice and whatever you want - a massive range of food.
Tony just LOVES the coffee here in The States  :lol

Cue the music from Jaws - because just across from us at breakfast was Mr Crop Top himself from Special When Lit  ^^^
I am sure some of you will recognise him - he looks rather impressed with me taking his photo dont you think?

EDIT - I spoke to this gentleman later in the day, we ended up in the elevator together and walking back to the main hall togehter, his name is Sam Harvey and seriously a nicer man you couldnt ask to meet, we spoke pinball and 'general USA/ Aussie stuff' and he was incredibly polite.

Also - Gavin , I met Dan Kramer at breakfast this morning and we discussed you and your business - what a nice guy he is  *%*
You should be able to spot him in the breakfast shot above as well.

Back again for a break around dinner time - it's free drinks at this hotel for 2 hours at the moment too  ^^^
I wonder where Tony is  #@#  **)  #@#

OK back to this morning..........

Jersey Jack - Wizard of Oz Pinball.
As usual - I will say it as I saw it - hopefully you wont read this negatively as I am trying to tell you what was said in the one and a half hours he spoke for.....

Firstly, we were really dissapointed that this was just a 'talk'......if it were me / us, I would be bringing the whitewood and some small samples of bits from the game so that people could touch and feel it to make it more 'real'.......there was nothing really, not ONE image and only at the very end did some printed artwork come out and get passed around.

Jack apparently runs a lot of games in a lot of the major theme parks across the US like Universal Studios and 6 Flags etc etc - they are redemption games etc, In relation to WOz, he is planning to have 5 or 6 prototypes of WOz in some of his existing specified locations to test them out in around December this year - he stated that he has a 42,000 square feet warehouse in New Jersey where the full 'production line' will be once that is up and running - he anticipates full production to start in around March.

He is offering up JJ Pinball factory Tours when the set up is running and also the possibility of a webcam in the facility so the production can be viewed on-line.

He let VERY VERY LITTLE out about the game itself ( basically nothing to be honest ) other than stating........

* That 2 other 'secret' designers who dont want to be named are working on the game as well.
* That the game will have SOMETHING in it's appeal which he is confident will bring people back to pinball ( what that SOMETHING is - well that wasnt specified  *!@

He also mentioned that he has 2 other games being designed right now as well - NO info was given about either of them other than the 2 'secret' designers are the guys doing those 2 games and one of them wants it to be Elvira / monster themed and that Elvira is already talking to them in a positive way about it.

So in a nut-shell , we really got nothing truly tangible about WOz - the crowd asked a lot of questions afterwards.
I can say he is a very positive guy - I wish him every success.
We had lunch sitting with him later, and he gave us a little more 'idle chat' but still nothing more.

I asked him if he was concerned that if he doesnt get some real tangible evidence / games out and meet deadlines IF he is concerned the pinball community would be saying to itself ' here we go again' ( I am sure you all know what I mean ) .....and he just confidently said he is getting this game done - period.

Colour DMD's

I went to this seminar , Tony chose not to.

Personally I think these look very good, the dots appear bigger to me and the colour is a 'little' pastel ( ish ) rather than 'burn your retina's out bright.
After the speech I believe these have a long way to go before they are 'common-place'.
The only one completed is AFM - it is on display here and you can play the game.

There has been a lot go into these , it comes with a seperate board to run it all and the screen is larger than required and they only use the centre portion of the actual screen to display the correct size of a standard DMD size.

Maybe you can make out what I am saying from this image  !@#

He said they have 2 more games / DMD's in the process at the moment but didnt say what games they are.
These DMD's are GAME SPECIFIC - meaning ( for now ) they cant be interchanged between games , he indicated that maybe down the track this can change.
They are releasing 100 units towards the end of this year for AFM at $399.00 each.

Back in the main hall today was busier than last night.
At least all the EM's are getting some loving today.

Talking of getting some loving - looks like Tony has a new fan - I mean this IS San Francisco  #@#

After the love-fest Tony ripped into the Jolly Park game - this really is a GREAT game, we both like it a lot.

I mentioned Elvira earlier - it turns out she is here too  ^^^

There is a beautiful Fire Power here ....really nice game.

And on top of it they put this STUPID BLOODY THING.
Come on all you Topper Lovers - tell me how SWEET and COOL this looks hey %%$

There is an area at the back dedicated to the historical games like this one.

And now - even the games themselves are telling me how I play  ^&^

I am off to find Tony - probably passed out in the foyer - and back to the hall for some more games.

Tony and I with Jersey Jack after his seminar today.
Note the pen behind the ear, I had been selling fruit on the highway earlier in the day  %.%
Please also note his T-shirt - I made comment in the seminar that we should grab a couple because we are Oz Pinheads.
He took my details and said he will send them to me - see what happens I guess.

An interesting fact is that if you Google the original Wizard of Oz full name, all the letters spell out OZPINHEAD.
His actual character name is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkel Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs.
Spooky stuff huh.

They are also selling these lit star posts here - I am sure many of you have seen them.
They look excellent - I still think $10.00 per post is a bit rich once you add em all up AND his dog nearly took my hand off tonight so I aint giving him none of my 'green' - plus I reckon we would be struggling to fit ONE of these in the bags on the way home - Tony has bought more stuff than a mad woman shopper

Ok - Cavey asked this earlier in the thread and I havent responded......

Wotto, if you could just bring back 3 x machines home from The Pinball Hall of Fame, what surprises would you bring back with you that u really liked the look and play of ?

So I will answer this and then say some things about some other titles too.

Mate - the 3 games I would DEFINITELY bring home ( from the trip - not just from PHOF ) are.....

Jolly Park
Pharoah
Embryon

Here is some 'ratings' ( as such ) on some titles I hadnt played before OR hadnt spent a LOT of time on before.

Games I rate as excellent players after spending time on them here -m you dont have to agree , this is just MY opinion and what I like  ^^^

Embryon
High Hand
Jolly Park
- LOVE this game and it is a damn shame none are in Australia - another one turned up tonight so out of the 8 in the USA we have now played 3 of them  #*#
Monopoly
Pharoah
- I found this title absolutely enjoyable - I always thought it was just a BK rip-off - but it is more than that , man this game has some cool shots on it and it looks fantastic as well.

Games I rate as absolute rubbish players after spending time on them here

Cyclone
Scorpion

Games I rate as extremely surprising and loads of potential after spending time on them here

Time Machine by Data East - really cool game , fun theme and good sounds
LaserCue - similar to Alien Poker and has some real cool shots - dont think many were made  !@#
Batman Forever
Hurricane
- yes I have changed my mind on this game, the one here plays SILKY SMOOTH and I have found my opinion has altered - GREAT BG

Games I thought would be complete SH*T - but are Ok and unique to play

Dragon - made by Interflip
Farfalla by Zaccaria - lame-ar$e theme but a VERY sweet looking game with some nice features and layout.

Games I rate as just plain friggin wierd after spending time on them here

Spectrum
Orbitor 1

Games I will always hate - even after spending time on them hereand REALLY TRYING to find love for them

Adams Family
Twilight Zone

This will most likely be my last post before heading home as we want to spend all day tomorrow on the games.
We have to drive 6 hours to LAX on Sunday ( here ) for our flight home and we will be back in Australia on Tuesday morning and I will catch back up then

Hope you enjoyed this thread.

Regards

Wotto & Tony

VERY Busy Saturday here at PPE - this IS officially the busiest day.

You will notice the crowds are up.
You can still get on games - you just need to wait for a game and then U R on.

Some of the massive banners on display here.

You can tell how large these are because you can measure it in this photo against Hulk Hogan  %.%

Now - back to the colour DMD
Here is Tony playing ( badly as usual ) the AFM with the colour DMD installed.

Another look at the DMD again.

And I thought this was odd BUT as it turns out it is an anti glare guard and it works really well as TOny didnt even realise it was installed when playing from a players perspective.

I spoke to Randy from Colour DMD and I will discuss later what he said about the future of this product  ^^^

Thanks for all the photos Wotto and Tony it has been great to look at them everyday.I agree with a couple of your comments on the machines you have played.Pharoah better in my opinion than BK,both in gameplay and looks and i have also played TZ and AF and i would not buy these titles also, both over rated in my opinion.
Title: Re: Pacific Pinball Expo - Let the fun begin.....
Post by: Wotto on September 25, 2011, 12:00:49 PM

Thanks Punter - funny , I was playing Pharoah and thinking at the time it is a better game than BK but I didnt want to convince myself of that as I like BK.

OK back to the Colour DMD info.

I asked Randy how long he felt it might be before these panels were in 'proper' production for various / many more games.
There are only Randy and one other gentleman working on these right now, therefore it would be a long way off until we see lots available.

HOWEVER , Randy suggested he may ask amongst the pinball community if anyone is interested in helping create more title panels, much like CPR do with all thier contributuing artists.......so any of you out there that have the knowledge and skills COULD get involved in this and be part of something pretty cool for our hobby - make sure you check out www.colordmd.com (http://www.colordmd.com) and IF you feel you have the skills to contribute , then watch his site or contact Randy directly via his site to see if you can assist.

A bit more of a summary of this afternoon.....

First off - here is a picture of 3 BIG PLAYERS in the pinball hobby.

The crowds got a little more intense than this morning.
We asked Michael Schiess, the main event organiser how many people come through and he said between 3000-5000 people attend this event over the 3 days.
They also have 150++ volunteers/ staff to make this event happen with numerous people donating games for the event too ^^^

Some people come dress 'themed'

Here we are with Michael - SMILE HEY WOTTO  :lol

TONY  -  STALKING CLIFFY  :lol

Thats Cliffy - what a SUPER nice dude he is
And Nick this ones for you......apparently you are some type of legend amongst these guys AND they have never even met you - they all knew you and asked if we knew you.

Thats Mr 68 in the middle.

My best mate from last night - NOT.
He still gave me the evil eye this morning.

We got to see the custom game Hellacopters with the glass off today which made it better to take pics of it , I met Wade Krauss who was a huge part of making the game ( along with that well known Metallica pinball for James Hetfield ).......he advised me they are currently doing another custom machine modelled on The Black Knight......THAT could be spectacular.

The detail in this game is SO nice.

He did tell me that the original Kingpin they made this from was a machine that was ready for the scrap heap , so they didnt destroy a game to custom make this.

Something we hadnt noticed were the monsters placed under the big clear inserts in the playfield, these light up as part of the gameplay.

Played a couple of woodies today......how fun  #@#
We played Knock Out as Tony likes boxing.

It has a little old mechanical boxing ring in the middle of it.

Apparently this Spot Bowler is a very rare game !@#
And man is it fast  %$%

I pulled back on the plunger, the ball shot into the playfield top arch area , then I walked around the complex, had lunch, discussed the French revoltion with a group of people, read War & Peace, went and filled the car with petrol, attended a PPE seminar for 30 minutes AND THEN by the time I got back the ball had JUST rolled down to the flipper so I was able to make my first shot  #@!

I reckon Harry Connick Junior would have this game frickin BANNED if he saw it  ^.^

Gavin - these two games were brought along by your friend Dan Kramer - what a cool guy.
Apparently these were put together so the "Big Double D's' were together - a bit of a hidden 'in' joke.
They are in very nice condition.

Some of the games where people have brought them along are topped with banners like this - which is nice.

This is DEFINITELY the last post - we have to go for for a feed ( oh if you ever come to San Rafael CA - go to Extreme Pizza in the main centre of the town for the ABSOLUTE BEST Pizza you will possibly ever taste ) as well as pack the bags for our trip home to Australia tomorrow night. We have a 6+ hour drive to LAX for a night flight home.

I want to say to any of you that are slightly considering visiting PPE one day - DEFINITELY do it - obviously the games and the selection of games is fantastic but also the other pinheads and the US people in general are just BRILLIANT and enjoy talking to Aussies.

Seeya all soon

Wotto and Tony

AWESOME guys - Just AWESOME  ^^^

Some very interesting pictures of the pinball fraterity. Good to see they are all approachable and take time out for photos etc !

Embryon is DEFINITELY a game to add to an SS collection. Very rare, and equally as difficult to buy in good condition.

Aaah mate... youve me em all!

Wade is a really nice guy and does some fantastic work... its Dan that put the machines together for him so they play fast and smooth.
Dan emailed me a few months back regarding the WMS machines he had for PPE... good to see he got them up and running 100% in time.

What a blast.. would have loved to gone also

Hi all , and thanks for the comments - we arrived back into ( the mess that is ) Sydney Airport ( watch the news tonight re customs  ^.^ ).

Anyway - the main thing is we got back onto Aussie soil safely and home to our families.
I havent spoken or heard from Tony, he had a connecting flight to get to and I just told him to bolt , I assume at this stage he got home OK.

Pretty tired at the moment - I do have a liitle more to say re the trip and what we saw when I start to feel fresh again.

Seeyou all soon

re laser cue.i have aquired a populated playfield.just hunting for a suitable donor machine, cab, backglass etc

Lol, I have been thinking of getting the cd as well. Have downloaded that song from itunes.

Thanks for the positive comments guys. I would hate to think how many photos and how much video we took between us. It is going to take ages for me to edit to put it all together.

Wotto has done an excellent job of documenting the trip as we went. Have been meaning to provide a summary of the highlights of the trip from my point of view, which I will do over the weekend.
