Title: Williams Indiana Jones High End Restoration
Post by: Strangeways on September 01, 2018, 11:42:00 PM
This Restoration is one of four Indys that are in the queue. Two will be done in quick succession, along with other High End games simultaneously.

This example was a typical game that was very tired, but as with all these restorations, the starting point is not important, other than a nice playfield.

Objective

High End restoration - APR "Nearly In Box"

Condition Report

Cabinet - 6/10 - As with all Indys, faded artwork. Structurally good, but some separation at the front of the cabinet.

Playfield - 7/10 - No wear, but it will have some repairs and a clear to lock in the work and ensure the colours "pop".

Electronics - 8/10 - Boards are really good, but all the updates will be done in-house.

Translite - 8/10 - looks fine and will clean up well.

Starting point

The game is set up for testing and evaluation. at this point I collate a list of parts that are missing, broken, about to break or that I want to add..

The cabinet decals will be replaced..

Playfield is very good for a game that was thrashed on location !

Almost 2 years since I updated this restoration  !@)

The playfield was restored by Geoff at Pinball Perfection, and I'm REALLY happy with the finished product ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20198_resize.jpg)

Better than new !

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20202_resize.jpg)

Mounted in the Rotisserie and ready to populate.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20294_resize.jpg)

I picked out this game as the playfield had no wear and the cabinet was really solid, with only minor repairs. BUT - A lot of the hardware had surface corrosion, and I would be wasting my time trying to clean it. So the parts unique to the game will be replated, and the common parts (screws etc) replaced. Here is an example of the hardware ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20207_resize.jpg)

I started experimenting with plating some of the hardware, and I was really happy with some of the parts. Another advantage of plating is the finish is obviously MUCH better. I've been plating now for years, so it is actually quicker and less labor plating than cleaning. So there parts are straight into the ultrasonic, then into the pickle and plated. I throw them in the tumbler as it is again, quick and easy. Obviously the three items on the left are cleaned, and the items on the right are straight out of plating, and are ready to tumble ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20209_resize.jpg)

Playfield support rest are done by changing to a longer bath. After plating I hand polish. Big difference.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20210_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20211_resize.jpg)

While I changed bath sizes, I throw in parts from other game that are too long for the bath I use for most jobs.Moving on to playfield components, and here is the single Drop Target ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20226_resize.jpg)

Now look at the rear !

Yuk !

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20240_resize.jpg)

Rebuilt ;

Rebuilt with new screws, washers and springs.

Next Assembly to rebuild is the "Rotor Lock Assembly". Again, rusty and filthy.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20246_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20248_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20249_resize.jpg)

The assembly is stripped and everything except the gearbox and motor are thrown in the ultrasonic, and then the individual parts will be plated and all the optos replaced.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20279_resize.jpg)

Huge difference.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20309_resize.jpg)

Assembled with new optos. Ready to re install into the machine !

Time to start populating the playfield. A few adjustments on the rotisserie..

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20298_resize.jpg)

The main lamp PCB will have all the pins and sockets reflowed. Even if they look "ok", they need to be done.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20299_resize.jpg)

Here is a close up of a socket. Not seen completely from the naked eye, but the camera picked it up really well.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20300_resize.jpg)

Test fit so I can start to refit the cable harnesses ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20302_resize.jpg)

More plating - the switch brackets. Again, easier to plate than clean.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20303_resize.jpg)

Here's the subway assembly. Filthy and corroded. This will be fun !

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20235_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20244_resize.jpg)

Stripped ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20276_resize.jpg)

Zinc Plated - Really good outcome.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20291_resize.jpg)

Ready for re assembly. Will have new opto boards throughout the entire game ;

Ball trough assembly. Corroded and ugly. Boards hacked.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20239_resize.jpg)

More plating !

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20277_resize.jpg)

Plated - MUCH better..

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20289_resize.jpg)

New trough PCBs installed. Test fitted ok - cabling starting to come together.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20304_resize.jpg)

New Tee Nuts, screws and the GI lamp sockets will be replaced ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20305_resize.jpg)

A bit nuts, but the cable brackets are plated, new screws and new cable clamps..

I'm revisiting some of the updates as I've missed some photos that are on the server, but I didn't link into the thread. So some may be repeated...

While inbetween jobs, I re painted the transformer a flat black. First the corrosion is removed with a wire brush, and then I scuff with a green scotchbrite.

All these rebuilt mechanisms are refitted to the underside and topside of the playfield. The respective Wiring looms are removed and cleaned in the Ultrasonic. The bonus of the ultrasonic is that it can clean corrosion off lamp sockets and gives me an idea if all or just some need to be replaced.

Brass Plating turned out really impressive. Considering my original plater had several parts for over 12 months then "lost" some of the parts during one or two lockdowns.. Lucky he found them, unplated, and I took them to another plater that was still in business.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20399_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20406_resize.jpg)

Underside of the "POA" done. New optos etc. I always change the optos on these games.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20367_resize.jpg)

New Idol Lock plastic. These have been reproduced by PPS and the old one was worn, so here is the rebuilt unit with the new one.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20410_resize.jpg)

More mech rebuilds..

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20411_resize.jpg)

New Starship-Fantasy Ramp installed. New optos etc.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20404_resize.jpg)

The Metal Ramp has a serious issue. The Ramp Flap is corroded and cannot be replaced. I have spring steel, but while in storage, it decided to collect as much rust as it could, so that's no option..

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20387_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20417_resize.jpg)

The solution was to order the new Cliffy Ramp protector set. Took 3 months to get here, but what a massive difference !

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20437_resize.jpg)

I lost the wiring loom for the optos, so I made a new one..

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20436_resize.jpg)

Metal ramp done.

Back to the Cabinet. The Lamp Panel needs to be rebuilt.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20423_resize.jpg)

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20421_resize.jpg)

Stripped, cleaned and sanded the rear. I ended up just cleaning the front of the panel as it was in really good condition.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20432_resize.jpg)

Loom and parts and washed in the Ultrasonic Cleaner. Spent 1 minute cleaning - which was to place it into the Cleaner and then remove it !

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20433_resize.jpg)

Re-assembled and new decal stapled.

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20435_resize.jpg)

Next is the apron. Needs to be stripped, painted and then the replacement decals applied ;

More playfield re-assembly, and now I notice the new Starship-Fantasy Ramp has a black ramp flap, and the metal ramp has a stainless metal ramp flap..

Working out the fine tuning before I finish the re-assembly. It looks amazing and plays well - so not long to go now..

Your IJ restoration is absolutely awesome work! The standard and attention to detail is first class. Thanks for posting for us amateurs to see what is possible. As an IJ owner i very much enjoyed following your project.

Thank You. I started posting restos YEARS ago to provide help and tips for pinheads to restore their own games. It is easy if you have patience and enjoy the process.

Unfortunately, there is always a part that is unobtanium. In this instance, the previous owner / operator decided to clean the speaker panel with steel wool or similar. What an idiot. So I had to source a better speaker panel (from my own personal game) to replace the badly scratched one.

(http://www.australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20449_resize.jpg)

Time to restore the speaker panel assembly.

(http://www.australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20450_resize.jpg)

Strip all the parts and sand back the rear of the panel.

Replace the felt - which is just "beer seal"..

New Display..

Job done - looks better !

A huge improvement..

Almost there - The smaller jobs need to be finished off. Aligning the Glass Channel is next. The channel needs to be higher than the level of the playfield glass. To adjust, I use the playfield glass and place cards inbetween the glass and the channel. This creates the correct positioning. I use tape to hold the channel in place to drill the holes.

(http://www.australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20462_resize.jpg)

New Gun Handle with new hardware ready to install. I HATE the factory clear plastic that is used, so I remove and create my own out of cardboard or "fishpaper". It looks HEAPS better.

(http://www.australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20464_resize.jpg)

Next is to create a nice balance with the translite illumination. I use Super Bright LEDs. This takes AGES for me to be happy with.

(http://www.australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20482_resize.jpg)

..and now it is just a matter of checking, testing, adjusting, testing, playing..

Beautiful. I played one of these for the first time at pinfest a couple of weeks ago. It stole the show for me and i fell in love with it.

Can't justify the dollars atm, but i guess they aren't gunna get cheaper.

Bill picked up the machine and it has been delivered to it's new owner, so I can now post the "bling" photos of the restored game. Feedback has been positive, so another happy customer !

Here are the final photos - Not much in the way of commentary, but feel free to ask questions. Might be a good idea to look at the start of the thread to see some of the "before" photos. I will comment on the cabinet photos, as the Next Gen decals were not available at the time and we had to use on equivalent - but it is different.

BLING !

At the time of this Restoration, we had three IJ re-decal jobs to quote, and this was the only "full restoration". At the time, the Next Gen IJ set was basically unobtanium as it was on eBay for $700 and was "The very last set". This "last set" was listed for well over a year, but in my case, I needed three sets. Strange. I knew a couple restorers that used the Next Gen set (funny, as there was only "one left"), and there were issues with the sides lining up and the front decal was too short. There was an alternative in Europe that other restorers were using and were much happier with at 1/3 the price. The sides lined up with the front, and the colors were much better. The options were provided to the customers and all three were enthusiastic about the cheaper (better) set. There was one issue, the headbox decal was "mirrored". But it still did not discourage the customers. At the end of the day, you play the machine, not stare at the head decals ! The ONLY option was these decals or nothing. I bring this up now as there were some deranged individuals that can't understand logic, or customer requests.

.. and the playfield. A SPECIAL thanks to Geoff Wills on this playfield restoration and clearcoat. He completed this playfield before relocating to QLD, so it is one of his earliest projects. It turned out perfect !

(http://www.australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20516_resize.jpg)

The Idol is a repro from PPS that was removed from the market as it was not the right color and it was not decorated. I repainted it GOLD and hand painted the black lines. It turned out really good !

(http://www.australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/IJ%20JC/IndianaJones%20JC%20511_resize.jpg)

PPS repro Fighter and Bi-Plane. The only "let down" on this project was the quality of some of the new parts. The Fighter Jet looks like it was painted by a 5 year old with crayons. This are NLA, so I'm happy that at least I had them for this restoration well ahead of time.

And we are done !

Again - Thanks to Geoff Wills for the Playfield restoration. All parts used were obviously from RTBB  #@#

Thanks for looking !

Saw Bill had two IJ's on next to my Sunset riders when he was here. So jealous, after playing one at Pinfest this year it was the star of the show for me. I loved it. Second best for me was Soprano's. I'd love to find one of those.

Such a beautiful job mate.

Yes, he still does Playfields last time I spoke to him. This Playfield was done 1-2 years ago before he relocated to QLD.
