Title: Making a DINER sign
Post by: Retropin on September 23, 2012, 03:33:45 PM
I got commissioned to make a DINER sign for TonyT in Adelaide.
He had seen a sign whilst in USA with Wotto and wanted it recreated for his American style diner he is installing in his house. Sign will remind him of the trip each time he sees it.

Heres the original..

Sign im making will be slightly different in that mine installs flat onto the wall rather than perpendicular.. support framing for this kind of sign makes manufacture complicated and expensive, plus installation is more difficult.. with that in mind, a compromise was made.

Heres my sign, fresh from having the text and border airbrushed on today... the neon and arrow will go on this week and then its ready for shipping.
Tony wants this scuffed and marked like the original... problem is, im having a hard time bringing myself to do it.. its come out so crisp and nice that i really am struggling to start destroying my good work.
Im loving this sign.. looks bloody nice!

Tell the buyer that the rest of his Diner will be in 'New' condition, and so should his sign

+ 1 . Another option is offer a slight discount and let him scuff it up himself  :lol

whats it constructed from? if its not gal sheet that could be your excuse as why not to scuff it up. if its wood or black sheet, you can say it wont last

The pics in the last lot of [photos make it look like the R is out of line... its not, but i cant get the whole sign in square on unless i go right back a couple of meters.
Anyway heres a distant shot cropped and a few at different angles..

...Customer very happy

Custom built box with cut to size high density foam to ship the sign... failing a truck driving over this, its impossible to damage.
Length of aluminium screwed to top edge is the other half of "Z" bracket which attaches to the wall... this sign then simply slides down over the top and sits securely in place.
Will attach 2 handles on the top edge to ease lifting.. courier picks up tomorrow.. Tony will have his sign by Thursday..

After coming back from the US trip with Wotto last year, could not get that Diner sign I saw out of my head. I contacted Gav and sent him a photo of it and asked if he could reproduce it for me.

I am completely blown away with the finished product - Gav absolutely nailed it.  Everyone that has seen the sign says it looks amazing and it does. Gav is super talented and I can highly recommend his services.

I have been working on and finished creating a 50s Diner inspired games room and recently received a diner booth setting from the US and have set this area up in the games room. Just need to move some more games upstairs.

Here are a few photos of the corner of the room that has the sign.
