Hi guys
yesterday I started on my nephews LAH.
here are the before photos of the semi stripped play field
-
and here is the Play field after a clean and novus 2 & then 1, no wax yet
-
Looking good so far Beaky its a shame they all wear on the ticket that would be a real bitch to touch up
-
I think mostly people overlay the ticket with a decal?
-

its the only art work wear on the p/f
what makes it harder is that the ticket has specals through the paint, there is one way i am thinking of to repair it, scan it then buy some gold vinyl the same, then have the black art work printed on clear and stick that over the gold vinyl, then stick them to the playfield, (after removing the polish in that area)
-

if there is one available off the shelf let me know who sells them please
Fortunately the cliffies cover up the wear around the holes in the centre of the playfield
-
Its looking good Andrew ! ^^^
Don't you just love it when it comes up nice...
I know someone who absolutely loves this game and is spewing he sold his ! <.>
-
easy to pull apart. a big friggin job putting it all back together.

Makes things easier when it comes time to put it back together

It depends on how long it takes to get the few bits & pieces i still need.
once it is fully shopped and all the new bits n' pieces fitted ($300 worth of parts going into it)
my Nephew wants $3000 for it so it will sit on ebay for a long time (with the ware on the p/f fixed of course)
-
Have a good look around the internet
I am sure i have seen a decal for this just can't remember were

Looking great Andrew. Good to see a very thorough clean and shopout.
I really really miss my LAH. !!!
Really FUN game and so under rated. I will get another one day.
Lucky mine had virtually no wear on the ticket. I remember seeing the decals too, but I cannot find them now.
MarkC did have a very nice playfield for a LAH a while back. Not sure if he still has it though.
-
Good work Andrew ^^^
-
ok on to the cleaning and assembly.
starting on the inserts
-
the lamp pcbs
-
the ball trough (all switches removed, cleaned rollers on switches. + new coil sleeve)
-
Drop targets.stripped down, all contacts cleaned and the ones that were bent like a dogs hind leg were straightend ( some ones attempt at fixing a bad contact ). new coil sleeve and lingage.
New decals will be fitted when i recieve them.
-
Slingshots and ball scoop stripped, cleaned, new sleeves and lingages fitted (sorry no before photos)
-
flippers are stripped and cleaned then a new flipper rebuild kit is installed.
-
all the metal posts where cleaned and then polished with brasso and a dremmil with a small buffing wheel. (this took quite a few hours, one day i will be able to afford a tumbler #@#)
all the screw heads and nuts where done the same way.
these have all been fitted to the playfield along with new plastic posts.
the kick back was cleaned and re sleeved.
-
Great work Beaky. Looking 100% than when it came in. The owner will be wrapped!
-
nice, Beaky - Your attention to detail is great. Mate - Don't hesitate in buying a tumbler. You will be able to finish the polishing much quicker, and with better results.
Keep the updates coming.
-
Looking great Andrew! ^^^
-
next step is the metal guides.
cleaned and regrained.
one of the guides needed to be regrained on both sides. In order to do this the rivets had to be drilled out and the mounts removed.
after i regrained both sides the mounts where riveted back on with the correct rivets.
-
this is my new rivet press, it has been made from a 1 ton arbour press.
I bought a kit with all the bits & pieces needed to convert it to a rivet press, it came with the roll over dies and intructions on how to modify the press & make it more accurate.
-
more metal guides
-
guides fitted to playfield
-
and one more
-
this is the abrasive flap wheel that i used to regrain the guides.
i did it with a low speed battery drill.
you can buy these at bunnings pretty cheap
-
Nice work Beaky she's looking awesome-you have cut NO corners and it shows well done.

I went to fit the rubber kit last night.
I ended up with half the rubbers being of incorrect size or wrong quantity. Why can't the people who supply the information in the manual get the rubber sizes right. @.@
The rubber kit was supplied as the manual stated but the manual is wrong.
I ended up with a whole heap of rubbers being to large or to small for the posts and spaces. ^.^
I have sent an email to my supplier with a list of rubbers that i need to finish re rubbering the playfield and also a list of the correct rubber sizes and quantities for a kit so next time some one orders a rubber kit they will get the correct rubbers.
-
Plastics have been cleaned and straightend, all new G.I. lamps have been fitted & one of the cliffie protecters have been installed.
i can't do much more assembly work to the playfield until i get the new lane guides, coil sleeves for jet bumbers, spinner, replacement rubbers and decals for the drop targets.
-
Tell the truth, after i gave you a bottle of my mates best bourban "moonshine", you were too smashed **) **) **) to do anymore on the playfield.
C'mon, fess up, how much of that bottle is left Andy ?
p.s- the next batch is almost ready for harvest, so u better get that machine done before the next case arrives. @.@

yeh, 1 x bottle ! ^^^ ^^^ ^^^ ^^^ ^^^ ^^^ ^^^ ^^^ ^^^
ya slowing down mate !
-
and now for the ramp.
the ramp had a lot of ball wear. can't find a new one any where so its time to try flame polishing.
I did pretty good for my first attempt.
I thought i would take a photo of it on coloured news paper so you can see how clear it came up.
-
Andy, what exactly did u use to clean n polish it. Novus or ?
Describe the flame polish bit so us simpletons know what u mean and how u did the "flame polishing". !@# !@#
-
Nice work Andrew ! ^^^
-
Flame polishing wins again - I remember that someone described this method in great detail last year.
Ah, yes, is was Matt from Geelong: http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=1568.0

thanks for the link, the flame on my blow torch is not as hot (as the blow torch in the link) but the flame is about the same size.
its a bit hard to see the flame in my picture.

I am waiting on parts to finish the playfield so i started on the cabinet
stripped and sanded then clear coat on the bottom and satin black on the sides
-
Looks nice and clean Beaky...
Personally i do not like cabinets cleared on the bottom and fully painted to the floor... Don't know why but i think it looks tacky...
I like to leave inside as orig as possible.. That's MO of course..
Again.....i can still appreciate the effort and awesome work... *%*
-
yeh, to a certain extent i agree Pinfan.
I was around at Andrews when he was doing the inside of the cabinet. The original black overspray paintjob on most cabinets, including this LAH was a pretty bad from factory. If anything, the factory paint jobs from day one are really really bad. Just unfinished and minimalistic.
The finished look of black now all over looks like it should have been done from day one.
Before Andrew painted the clearcoat over the bottom of the cabinet, it was sanded back to bare wood and looked a treat. After the clearcoat of lacquer, it turned a browny yellowy colour and i did not like it either. The lacquer look looks shitty. But at least it is sealed i guess, but at a visual price.
One of the melbourne guys who did that Funhouse full restore, actually painted the bottom of the cabinet in a cream pinewood colour, which looked amazing.
I would probably go with that, before i would ever use lacquer.
To me, the inside of a cabinet is very very important. The extra effort gives a finished look that the factory never bothered with.
Hats off to Andy for masking it up and giving it a go. I think the lacquer will be thrown out for the next job i would reckon. Andy wasnt 100 percent happy with it either, but he has followed his customers directions, which is important in this regard. ^^^

the only reason why i spray the bottom clear is to make it easier to keep clean. I do agree the raw wood bottom looks better
-
remember the colour of el=timbo's cabinet resto.
picture below.
-
I guess each to their own....
Not taking anything away from Andy's work but i wouldn't do it to one of my own restores...
Again I think it looks great !
-
yeh, lacquered wood looks crappy. i love eltimbo's cabinet. looks amazing.
i am thinking of doing something special with my godzilla cabinet inside. photos to come.
-
yep i will be painting with a wood colour next time, no clear coat
-
I saw the 99 percent finished job this afternoon.
That LAH is looking bloody good i will tell ya.
Now Beaky, u can do mine for some cash since u did such a bloody nice job.
Just put that Black Knight 2000 and that Star Trek Next Gen aside, naahhhhh, didnt think ya would.
Cant wait to see the BK2000 with the new legs n brand new cabinet decals. Ohhh Yehhh. *%*
Thats the next Restoration ! ^^^ ^^^ ^^^ ^^^

This is looking real sweet!
Definetely a game that i would snap up if i had the opportunity. I played it at Bumper in Melbourne a while ago and loved it. Being a fan of the movie helps too!
I actually dont mind the Laquered finish at all, but if your interested Beaky i got a better colour match for the timber floor. I just went and picked something close last time as no amount of sanding was going to get me the result i wanted. I'll let you know the colour codes when i pick the tin up if you like.
Great work so far!

I'm also a fan of 'raw' wood. My 2nd CFTBL was sealed by the guy who I had decal the cabinet, and I really don't like the way it looks - but to change it would be a lot of effort to most likely make it look 'worse', since I might nick the nicely restored cabinet. It's for sale anyways, so my keeper game is mine ;)
One of the neat aspects of any restoration is to see how someone else does it, at least in my eyes. We all have lots of ideas, and depending on who is looking, the ideas are great, or not so great, and usually no one of us can try everything.
We can learn through the efforts of others, which also make us think of more ideas :)
-
most of the assembly work has been done. i still need slingshot and return lane plastics plus drop target and spinner decals.
also the wear mark has not been repaired yet
-
i still need a speaker for the bottom of the cabinet + i need to install the knocker.
the pop bumpers where also fully rebuilt and a new micro switch for the spinner was installed.
i haven' removed all the dirt from the bottom of the cabinet yet.
-
back of cab has been repaired & painted.
legs repainted, new leg feet fited, new white stops, leg protectors painted & fitted
I still need to add the stickers
-
now for the back box and topper
before pics
(i will add the after pics later, i need more paint)
-
Back Box has been done, cleaned the insert and fitted back box to the cabinet, it was sanded, filled where needed, primed and sprayed with satin black.
a new sticker was made for the latch.
also new stickers for the back box insert & under the lockdown bar.
-
That's come up sweet as beaky well done @@*
-
Looks very tidy ^^^
-
That's one nice LAH
did you manage to find a golden ticket decal for the playfield ?
-
That's one nice LAH
did you manage to find a golden ticket decal for the playfield ?
unfortunately no one makes them, I should be able to get the gold adhesive vinyl from a sign supply shop and then print the black on it with an ink printer and then cover it with mylar.
i thought about printing the black on a clear adhesive film with a laser printer but by the time i put the gold then the clear with black printed on it and then mylar it might create a big lump on the playfield.
just a few more bits and pieces to do on it, just the sling shot and return lane plastics to sort out and the centre of the topper + a speaker for the cabinet & the gun for the ball shooter and serial number stickers.
And thanks guys for all the positive replies. ^^^
-
Hey beaky,i'm not sure if these rub on transparent decal paper would suit the problem but it may be a solution for the black and it would be very thin, shame you cant paint the gold on and then put the rub on decal over the top, also the new mimaki commercial inkjets print gold, silver and white nowdays and most print shops have them i'm sure they could print it on decal paper, worth asking anyway.
here is the link for the decal paper supplies http://www.decalpaper.com.au/products/rubon-decal/clear/

thanks necroscope
-
Sweet job there Beaky ^^^
LAH is a fun pin, but i'm a huge Arnie fan, mine will never leave,,.. "In the real world, the bad guy's can win" lol %.%

Andrew,
Have you tried contacting Jeff @ ClassicArcades? They recently either closed their business or changed names but I'm pretty sure they had the LAH ticket decal.
