Title: Addams playfield repair
Post by: MartyJ on October 14, 2010, 10:57:36 AM
Just thought I would share a couple of photos of some work I've done recently.  I have been very busy of late finishing off some customers machines but I've been trying to squeeze in some work for my own games.

I recently picked up an Addams from NSW (project) but I'm very happy as it works 100%, is complete, no hacks or issues.  The existing playfield has some very minor insert wear, but this is the reason I purchased the machine.  I was down at PBSP and purchased an Addams playfield (one of the remaining ones) from Mark & Damien.  The screen printed artwork was fine and no major issues.  The clear coating was not quite up to my standards so I wet sanded the imperfections out and gave the playfield another 3 coats of clear.  The photos of the clear are 'straight off the gun', so in a few weeks I will give the playfield a further sand before its final cut and polish.

The clear is a 2pac automotive clear and should protect the playfield well for the rest of its life.

VERY VERY nice Marty,

The finish is a real credit to your process, and your keen eye for detail.

Cant wait to see the finished game, and get a few games on it too!!

Top shelf,

Timbo

What cha doing with orginial worn PF?

Not 100% sure yet.  Its definitely not a write off.

I will wait until I'm all done on the full rebuild of machine then make a decision.

Bit more progress on my Addams playfield.

I've invested quite heavily in some new equipment to help with this process.  I never like to go the cheap route with tools..!

Basically its near on impossible to get a perfect glass finish when spraying a clear.  There will always be tiny imperfections.  Although my finish off the gun was pretty good, I have wet sanded the entire playfield back with 1200, followed by 1500 and finally 3000.

The finish is now as flat as its ever going to get, but obviously the clear is now dull.  The next step is the clear coat polishing which will bring it out to a fantastic shine again..

Thanks Daniel.  My compressor has a good water trap (emptied daily) and all air tools are oiled before use!

Buffing of playfield is now complete.  I am using a specific product specially designed for clear coats and obtaining a high shine.  Its a five step process, but well worth it.

I'm very happy with the finished product and its much better than what I started with.  It would add around $250 to $300 on the cost of a new playfield (in total) but well worth it IMO.

Its in line after the Taxi & Black Knight restorations!
