Mods have "fast tracked" the requested "Ignore User" function. This was going to wait for the major update, but we have decided to implement it now. We have reached the point where it is better to allow the membership to use it if they wish, than to not have it at all.
To use this feature, you need to have the default theme set within your profile. It MAY work with some of the popular default themes, but we have tested with the "SMF Default Theme - Core" and it works perfectly. You may need to log out and log in again to see this feature in effect. Simply check the authors of the posts and you will see the option.
The remainder of this thread will remain "open" to report any TECHNICAL Issues or questions.

For obvious reasons, Strangeways and I can't use this function unfortunately. So if one of us is ignoring you - we really are, the old way!
-
Ignoring Private Messages
Importantly, the function if used from below the to be blocked member profile does not block PM's from that member. if you wish to block PM's from a nuisance member, navigate to –
Profile (tabs across the top)
From Modify Profile links on the left
Click Personal Message Options
Add the user name to the Ignorelist box
-
Please refer to the original post - this thread it for TECHNICAL issues, please confine posts to technical matters.

using the 'SMF default theme - core' theme
there is no image, but the button is still there and usable
did not have to log out
-
I'm having a little trouble setting this up. I have logged out and back in, I use a standard colour scheme the same as the old colours, blue background. Do I need to use the red and black scheme as I would rather use the blues?
Looking forward to seeing this working as its doing my head in ^&^
-
Hi Matt, check at the bottom right the setting is "SMF - Default Theme Core".
You should then be able to see under the users avatar a small "Ignore" icon.
-
And otherwise you see an empty picture that does the same thing.
-
Looking forward to seeing this working
Looking forward to (not) seeing this work
-
I've set the default theme to ""SMF - Default Theme Core". I can globally change this and reset everyone's theme easily if required. This will force everyone's theme to be the same unless they change it again ?
Matt - Is it working for you now ?
-
Yes thanks mate $#$
-
if your using Safari you may only see a "?" mark instead of a button, just click the ? mark
-
Can the people ignored know who is ignoring them or not?

Can the people ignored know who is ignoring them or not?
I can see what you said Rob!
To answer your question, no BUT if you block them on PM's - to which they get an error message which spells it out quite clearly.

Another completely blank thread.... hello???....hello??

Can the people ignored know who is ignoring them or not?
No.
Neither can Mods.

yeah, but we cannot ignore you and Nick
(but I cannot imagine why I would want to ignore Nick) <.>
EDIT
the other bummer is if somebody quotes the ignored user, you can then read the post

I'd like to help you out, Pete, but I'm currently ignoring you <.>
I think there might be a way around that with nested quotes. I'll look into it, but if someone quotes an "ignored" user, then there's not much that can be done. The mod is not that "smart". But the nested quote may work if the quote is from another user that quoted an ignored user.
but don't quote me on that *%*

Nino I think this feature has stopped working for me. I can still see my wife, but what's strange is she's ignoring me @.@

Playing with my ipad i went to press on a thread and accidentally called a persons profile. It told me 4 people were igoring him. Is that from messaging or posts? I think its a good thing if a person can see they are being ignored as it may get them thinking and maybe change theirs ways. I dunno???

not from me cause i can read your posts Gavin.
I wont be using the feature, not even against those who dislike me, or the half dozen who will ignore me.
I come on here to read n to learn, and i cant do that by blocking anyone, even if i dont like what they write.
IF u have a number against your name, its from someone else.
-
Well im sure i can be forgiven for having yourself as prime suspect Brett... there are 2 others though.. but yes.. you were at the top of my list.
I too havent and wont be using it.
Is funny though that the 2 that fire up against each other the most have chosen not to ignore...if we can keep the fireworks between us down a bit Brett, it might not be a bad thing for the sake of the forum... it is possible to have too much sparkle!
-
No problems Gavin.

Methinks someone has taken the shotgun approach to ignoring as a way of making a statement. With a bit of sleuthing you can find there are other users who have an ignore count of 1 who haven't made a post in months.
EDIT: Got a 1 ignore listed on mine now as well. ^^^

I couldn't care less who's ignored me you d**k***d lol dam they can't read my post ha ha ha

There will be user accounts that have just been created by persons who for whatever reason want to monitor the forum, and can easily be used to stuff around to create some controversy. I think anyone with one or two ignores can safely "ignore" that as any reflection on them.
This wasn't intended this as a popularity contest though, it's to help some members keep themselves out of run-ins with certain other members. It also seems to have created an opportunity for some individuals to reflect on their behavior, and that is very much a positive.

I feel left out - surely I'm enough of a shit stirrer to have annoyed at least ONE member here <.>

Like Nick(Pinnies4me) has said, "There will be user accounts that have just been created by persons who for whatever reason" etc etc.
I am sure some have opened multiple new accounts just to ignore me and lift the numbers.
Be happy Andy(Rottyguy) that your threads n posts wont get hacked in the future now that your detractors will be ignoring you.
As for multiple AP accounts, anyone doing such a thing, shld realise that their I.P address will come up multiple times against multiple user accounts so its not like people in the know cant see and work out who is playing silly buggers.
In a week or two, the ignore thing will be old news, and people can focus back on pinball and the funside of the hobby.

It's a shame there's a need for a ignore user function IMO. I won't be using this function - seems too much like Censorship....
Anyway good to see some light hearted humour this thread. It's generally what can be said about the site and what Aussie Pinball should be!

Censorship?
I think of it being a reminder not to take things too seriously
we are here to talk pinball, not to solve the worlds problems

I don't think its a form of censorship. I got a PM barrelling for my comment about the ignore count. WTF LIKE I SAID I HAVE F@&king FAT FINGERS AND WHEN I HIT THE PAGE NUMBER LINK I HIT IGNORE AND I WENT TO THEIR PROFILE. Thats when I saw the field.
I think the ignore may be a good thing if some people seem to want to argue about the smallest of things. My bet this topic will turn into a full on arguement and mirade of slanging posts. You get ignored....fine.....treat as a wake up call or treat it as the other person is missing out on your contributions. Theres no big deal or is there. I dont think its going to change oz and our rights in anyway???

That what it comes down to.
Censorship maybe a bit of a strong term - But I mean it in a self imposed form.
Those that feel it's necessary will use it, those that don't won't.

We did originally specify this topic for technical issues, however I am appreciating the comments that are being made, so we'll keep it open to general discussion for the moment, we can always separate the discussion out to a separate thread if needed.
As I have stated publicly previously, I was not in favour of this add-on, however recent events made it seem a better option to us than some alternatives Strangeways and I have considered (and are still investigating and considering).
A couple of guys have made some very valid observations. It is not censorship in any form as the reader has always had the option to ignore anything they didn't like, or any member they could not bear reading prattling on. But that's hard to do - the "train wreck" psychology of just having to read (and I am absolutely guilty of this on all counts of this) stuff written by even the most obnoxious of members is hard to control. There are also the "troll baiters" - not respected members getting into a stouche due to a difference of opinion, but those that bait and encourage problematic members/topics to flame the fires.
This is just an assistant to free will - you can ignore by choice, or use this to destroy the space waste.
I agree with the "treat it as a wake up call" - while it's not a popularity contest, those with lots of ignore ratings might take stock, which is a good thing.
As for the idea of members setting up new accounts to just add an ignore, this has not happened based on the logs. Not many new members in the last week, and everyone has been IP vetted among other checks. One might have slipped through the cracks maybe, but new membership is not huge these days as most who know pinball already know the best pinball forum!
