G’day All
It’s been a LONG time between resto threads so I thought I’d do one on a game I’m currently working on for tonyt here on AP.
This one had been in the resto queue for quite a while, Tony had contacted me about restoring it for him a couple of years ago. I had been pretty busy with other resto/repair work (as well as working several other jobs, which is still the case btw), and I finally had some time earlier this year and a spot in the queue so I had Tony send the game up to me.
Pics below show the game as received.. this game will get the FULL treatment, cab respray, playfield resto, backglass sealed plus some minor board work etc etc..

Playfield had already been partially stripped before I received the game, so all of the parts were sent with the game of course, along with a few new parts to go on the game. Overall the playfield is not too bad, with the only bad wear below the kickout holes. Inserts will need to be removed and reinstalled level also.
The only mylar on the pf is in the pop bumper areas, and will be removed.

The backglass is in really nice shape, with only a few small areas of paint loss. The bg will be sealed with Triple Thick and will probably get a few minor touch-ups.

First job I started on was the cabinet. After removing all of the components and having a good look it was decided to replace the back panel as it was in really bad shape and was already coming apart in one corner. The front right hand corner was also coming apart as well and needed regluing.

Notice the difference in the colour I found when I removed the side rails!!
Back panel removed and replacement panel cut, ready to be fitted.
And glued and screwed into place. I cut new corner pieces for the leg mounting plates as well.

At this point I set the cabinet aside and started on the backbox, stripping it and started tracing the artwork so I could make the stencils later on.

Then sanded off all of the old paint, ready for the repairs needed.

Ready for the first coats of primer!
First primer coats.

Next step was filling of any imperfections found with spot putty.. this was a step that had to repeated several times before I was satisfied that it was ready for its basecoat.
And finally fast forward a few weeks.. ready for the basecoat, after the aforementioned multiple sessions of prime/sand, prime sand etc!

Time for some stencil making; same process as I’ve always used for my restores, trace the artwork then transfer that onto cardboard and cut out.
Cabinet stripped and repairs started; same deal as the backbox.
Before I did anything though I took the cab into the paint shop and had the colours matched and mixed. I’m using automotive acrylic for all my restores now, having stopped using rattle cans for cab repaints.
Something I do on most cab restores now is to add new timber to the bottom where the ply is usually damaged/chipped away. On this cab even though the back panel is new I got some strips of Tasmanian Oak from Bunnings, cut the bottom edge of the back and added the new timber over the bottom edge of the ply. My reasoning behind this is to help prevent the ply being destroyed if the game is slid into the back of a ute or trailer etc.
It can be seen in this pic below where I have also glued new timber onto the inside bottom edge of the sides where the plywood has usually fallen off.
First primer coats.. As with the backbox this process had to be repeated several times due to the amount of damage/planking of the plywood, one side was worse than the other.
And here are the cabinet and head box ready for the basecoat. These were left for a week or so before I sanded them out in preparation for the basecoat.. I did this right through the whole process, left the primer to allow all of the solvents to escape and allow for shrinkage before sanding.. less chance of repairs showing up in the finished product.
-
And finally some pics of the finished basecoat. This was done last weekend, and I’ll move onto the playfield (and other jobs) until I get another run of warm weather to do the stencilling.

Awesome work, love to see these resto threads. I'll enjoy following your progress on this one. Thanks for taking the time and sharing. ^^^
-
Agree, awesome posts and thanks for taking the time. ^^^
-
Really appreciate the effort you are putting into this for me.
Glad you could fit me in; you are very thorough and excellent at what you do.
-
Thrilled to see you back on the restorations ^^^
I'm glad you moved on to the acrylics rather than spray cans. The results as so much better - that basecoat looks amazing. The headbox edging is chipboard and is very difficult to paint as the timber absorbs the paint very quickly and leaves a different finish from the plywood. I can't notice a difference - so you have done very well. The lower cabinet chipboard back panels are always a pain to replace. I think the last one I did took almost a day of fiddling to get it right - but it was worth it.
I know tony LOVES his boxing games - so I know the finish product will be worth waiting for !

Thanks Nino, I've been a busy boy the last few years so there will be a few more resto threads to come for some of the other stuff i've worked on (there's a fair bit of stuff documented on my FB page). *%* Its just a shame i havent done any work on my OWN games in about 3 yrs!! (still trying to get to my Pinball Pool and finish it) @.@
The backbox surround on this is MDF, and yes it does soak up a lot of paint, another reason for the multiple coats of primer/filler. And yes the switch to acrylic paints from enamel i used to use saves me a HEAP of time.. especially if something goes wrong! Any screw-ups while painting can be put right in a fraction of the time as opposed to enamel.. can be fixed in a matter of hours as opposed to a week or so!!
Plenty of other resto threads to come when i find time.. including;
Gtb Solar City
Gtb Card Whiz
Gtb Pinball Pool
Gtb Surfer
Gtb Ouick Draw.. all of which have been completed and picked up/delivered.
plus in addition to Ali at the moment i'm also working on;
Gtb Buccaneer (total resto)
Gtb Outer Space (pf resto)
and waiting to be started F14 Tomcat at the end of the queue
Oh and i almost forgot Cam's Wms Line Drive pitch n bat game
AND an Aristocrat one arm bandit @@^ @@^

Really appreciate the effort you are putting into this for me.

Thanks Tony.
Having worked mostly on EMs lately i'm really looking forward to seeing this one completed, as Ali is an old favourite of mine from the good ol' days *%*

Mitch's attention to detail is excellent and I am very confident I will be happy with the finished product.

good to see the jobs back up here again. nice watching the jobs from start to finish.

I know acrylic drys quicker. But last time I spoke to the automative painters near me they use a water based paint. They claim it's better than enamel or 2 pac. Just curious if you tried these? And if so what the results were
-
Looking great. Thanks for all the pics. Always admire the patience needed for projects of this extent. The stencil work is very admirable indeed @@*

No I haven't tried any of the waterbased paints. After just speaking with a mate of mine who has worked in the auto paint trade he told me its like four times the price of acrylic so its unlikely I'll be trying it anytime soon *.*

Cheers for the comments ^^^
The yellow stenciling has been completed, will post more pics after the orange has been done (waiting on some decent painting weather).
-
I really like your idea of making the stencil with cardboard, do you have any problem keeping the artwork edge sharp?
Heaps of the older machines have fuzzed out artwork by not having the stencil stuck down.
-
Awesome pics, love seeing pinballs brought back to life and being preserved.
Pinpal....

Time for an Update;
Some stenciling progress pics..
Yellow being done; The yellow stenciling was actually done a few weeks ago..

Orange stenciling was done over the last couple of days, and was completed today.
I'm now using Krylon Easy Tack to hold the stencils down while doing the stencils.. which means i don't have to use a lot of heavy items (bolts/sockets etc) to hold the stencils down like i used to do. Much easier not having obstacles in the way to get in the way when spraying :D

This looks really good in the flesh. It's a nice design very professionally executed.
Going to Mitch's is always a treat....
p.s. Cam, you're going to be stoked when you see that Buccaneer.
pss. My Outer Space p/f is beautiful $#$
-
carnt wait for the buccaneer. man this cab is looking so sweet , great work mitch
-
Looking at the yellow paint - It appears you build up the colour with several thin coats. It really does look a lot better than having thick coats with edges. I love the "old school" style of stenciling. I miss those days !
Cabinet look AMAZING !
Your garage reminds me of the "old days" (5 years ago) when I was just starting out - I hope what happened to me, happens to you ! BIGGER PLACE !

Yepp spot on Nino, I did about four or five light coats of each colour to get good coverage of paint, with ten minutes flash off time between coats and a further ten minutes after last coat before removing the stencil. The edges are really sharp and clean with virtually no paint bleed or over spray so there is a slight edge to the stenciled colours. I smoothed over the edges with my fingernail after removing the stencil (pretty sure I read that trick in one of your threads) :D
And yeah I'm starting to run out of room in the garage so a bigger place would be awesome if I can make it happen *%* though that is a long way off yet at this stage I think..

Hi all, Time for a quick update;
Coin door stripped and repainted;
Everything on the interior of the door was either painted or polished
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k306/mrpinbol/1980%20Stern%20Ali%202/0101_zps69f952xc.jpg)
The lockdown bar locking mech was cleaned up and painted in the same silver hammered metal as the coin door.
Next i decided to tidy up the transformer panel and rebuild the power supply board..
After i stripped all of the parts off the plywood panel, i sanded it down and gave it a couple of coats of satin clear to pretty it up a bit :D
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k306/mrpinbol/1980%20Stern%20Ali%202/0104_zpssn8vynub.jpg)
And here is the end result.. looks much nicer me thinks!! The power supply PCB got all of the usual upgrades.
Fitted back into the cab, along with the speaker panel which got the same treatment :D

Wow you're doing a fantastic job , this thing will be better than new . lots of hours, but it shows
The coin door really sparkles now , i bet it had drink stains all over ,which are hard to remove to begin with .
You just need the credit decal and Stern coin door sticker to finish it off ,
nice looking game inside and out .
must be close to firing her up are you?

Thanks Ralph ^^^
The coin door was actually pretty clean inside, i just had to strip two layers of paint from the exterior of it! I dont usually bother with the coin door stickers but this game will get one as Tony sent one up with the parts for the game.
I'm close to firing up the game to check boards etc, but i still have the playfield to restore. I'm working my way thru several restores at once here atm ^&^
-
Great work Mitch, you are really putting in a lot of effort into this and it is appreciated.
Tony
-
Looking great mate keep the pix coming
-
Coming along nicely. The classic Sterns are great fun to restore. The repaint of the door is always a lot easier than regraining and plating parts.
-
G'day guys, been a while since i posted in this thread so i thought i'd better do another quick update;
Been pretty busy with this game plus a few others, as well a doing other 'proper work' that keeps the wolf from the door :D (and slows me down on the resto work)
Anyway, on to some pics..
New Game Setting cards that i remade from scans of the originals..

I started with the white beneath the plastics, tidying these up by sanding, masking and repainting.

A pic of the repair progress of the wear below the top center kickout hole; after several hours of painting, under a magnifying glass and a fine brush for the text!!
there was still a bit of fine tuning to be done when this pic was taken.

Entering the home stretch now, with most of the major touch up work done $#$
I airbrushed the purple colour today and ended up spraying more of the p/f than i had originally intended to get the colour to blend in with the original colour (it was a difficult colour to match exactly). and MAN what a pain in the arse it was masking up all of those stars!!

Not much left to do now!! just need to redo some of the black (top arch area) and some tidy up/fine tuning and it'll be ready for the next step!!
-
Wow, that is coming up sensationally. Really appreciate your efforts Mitch.
-
Waited until I had a look on the tablet before commenting as a phone doesn't do it justice. I'm sure it looks even better in the flesh than what I'm seeing now. Well done Mitch a top effort
-
Hi Mitch
Usual high standard.....this looks so good in the flesh

Very nice work Mitch @@*

OKAAAYYYY... So somehow by fart-arseing around with folders on Photo Bucket i have managed to screw up my pics in the previous posts ^&^ ^&^ ^&^
NOT HAPPY ^.^ ^.^
Anyway some new pics, showing where i'm up to, Touch-ups completed and playfield remylared.

I made NEW wood side rails for the playfield, as the original vinyl (or contact??) rails were in a bit of a sorry state. So rather than try to refurbish the originals i decided it'd be a LOT quicker just to re-make them. I purchased a 3 meter length of 12mm x 30mm Tassie Oak from Bunnings and had it trimmed down to the correct dimensions (1 1/8 inch high). Rather than wasting time and money trying to source some new covering for them i decided to just paint them.
A couple of coats of primer followed by a few coats of black had them looking the part! Because i didn't put heaps of primer/filler on them the wood grain is still visible so they actually look pretty close to the originals #*#
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k306/mrpinbol/1980%20Stern%20Ali%202/1980%20Stern%20Ali%203/0146_zpslbkdghl5.jpg)
And fitted to the playfield!
More parts being fitted;

One of the ball trough guides needed repair, one of the mounting legs was broken off so i fashioned a new angle bracket and attached it to the guide.
The stainless guide from the top extra ball lane had a mounting leg missing, so i raided a replacement leg from an old Stern guide i found in my stash of parts, and fitted it using small screws and nuts.

Hi all, Time for a LONG OVERDUE update!!
I've been plodding along, on this restore along with several others at the same time.. as well as working several other 'real jobs' :D
This game has sure thrown me a few curve balls and given me a few headaches as a result, but it's coming together finally $#$
Time for some pics;
Drop targets fully rebuilt, with brand new targets Tony provided with the game.
I added some mylar for added protection.

The bumper switch spoons were looking a bit worse for wear so i replaced them with new items. I've seen these in the past completely worn out with holes worn thru them!
I ended up making new coil wrappers for all of the coils, i was originally only going to replace the ripped/damaged ones
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k306/mrpinbol/1980%20Stern%20Ali%203/0160_zpsb6gam9n9.jpg)
Fully rebuilt bumper mechs.

Flipper mechs rebuilt, with new rebuild kit this time instead of my hand fabricated links as i would usually do.

Slings fully rebuilt; the kickers were badly worn so i replaced them with new Bally/Wms items.
Some redrilling was needed to fit them.
The apron and shooter gauge were repainted, and a Pinball Rescue decals applied.

Everything was test and adjusted before fitting the playfield into the cabinet

Next to be done; Backglass sealing and a few minor touchups, and the game will be complete #*# #*#
-
Nice work
-
Very nice, it's coming up great. ^^^
-
Great work Mitch, looks great.
-
really enjoy watching your work
-
Time for another update:
I was asked to seal and do some minor touchup on the backglass,
so the first job to do was seal it with Triple Thick
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k306/mrpinbol/1980%20Stern%20Ali%203/0178_zpsznwtngdo.jpg)
Then the glass was set up in my backglass jig.
As can be seen, the glass is already pretty nice shape! Only needing relatively minor touchup work.

There is a thread here somewhere with some pics i posted ages ago when i built the backglass jig.. I'll see if i can find it and post the link.
Basically i built it from scrap angle iron i had laying around, i had my brother weld it up as i didn't have a welder at that time.
It has removable timber frames that hold smaller BGs... Gtb wedgehead, 2 and 4 player glasses for example. i have a Sinbad glass to do soon so i'll need to modify it again to hold that :D
Here is the link to the thread for the backglass jig.

Thanks Gav. Very sad today, big fan of his.
This game is very special to me, my holy grail. Mitch knows how much I appreciate the work he has put into this for me.
Should be in my house the end of this month.
This game will never leave the collection.

Sad day with Ali's passing. Owning the game will be more significant and sentimental.

RIP Cassius, you will be missed.

Sad day indeed.

Thanks for the kind words guys!
Tony has had his game back for nearly two weeks now and is a very happy camper i'm glad to say #*#
I've asked him to add a few pics of the game set up in his house, which he will do when he gets time *%*

What a great result! Very impressed with the effort put into this.
It must be a shame not being able to keep it but the new owner will love it!
Cheers: Brettski... :)

Mitch is indeed a credit to the hobby. Would be the best ALI in the country for sure ^^^

Sorry Mitch, been very slack in posting some photos of the game setup home.
Extremely happy with the job Mitch did on this, photos don't do it justice.
Game plays really sweet. Had a mate over last night who is not into the older games but he loves Ali, plays really fast.
Thanks again Mitch, I can highly recommend you.

It looks amazing. Thanks for posting pics of the completed game in it's home environment !

Thanks for adding the pics Tony, and it's great to know you're happy with the work done and enjoying playing it ^^^
It sure brought back some memories playing the game after i'd completed it.. might just have to find one for myself! *%*
