Title: Nino's Big Container Day !
Post by: Strangeways on September 22, 2009, 12:18:51 PM
Every Pinhead's dream, just became a reality for me late last week. I imported a 20 Foot Container full of EM, SS and DMD pinballs from Europe. It arrived safely and has been unloaded into my storage building. There are 50 complete machines, comprising of 39 Project machines EM and SS, 1 machine already restored and 10 DMDs. I also bought some playfields as well.

Importing Pinballs has always been the domain of the commercial Guys - and "NO", I'm not about to go Commercial. I bought this container as a private entity. I did this to have a "stockpile" of machines to fulfill my addiction. They were all "hand picked".

These will keep me busy for years - and every single machine will be documented here. Think of it this way - Some people pay tens of thousands for fast cars, boats and big houses. I had "better" things to do with my money - I wanted a steady flow of EM and SS machines to restore - and I found them. They will go into my Gamesroom to be played and enjoyed. As most of you know - I enjoy the "Journey" or the "process" of restoration, so I will be moving on machines post restoration on a "case by case" basis.

The exersize was BY FAR the hardest thing I've done, and VERY stressful. Anyone who says "it is easy", is simply not stating the truth. So many people have to be involved, and there's a "twist" or "delay" at every corner. All it takes in an Admin person to tick the wrong box and your container is delayed.

I've spent the last 4 days going through machines, and I'm one very Happy Pinhead.

Was it worth it ?

Well I have no interest in expensive Cars, Houses etc - and I see this as a great challenge and opportunity.

Anyhow - Here's some pictures of my "Container Day"..

IF there are more Fathoms I will cry..

Yes it is a dream I've had for 15 years.

No plans really - I have a couple of machines ahead of me (currently in my garage), and then I hope to start one or two of the rarer EMs that are pictured in the photos. I'm "itching" to restore the Williams "A Go Go" or Bally "Mariner".

Judging by your new avatar I would say that a Bally Viking is in the mix?

No System 80s Marty - All SS machines are Ballys. Here's a snippet ;

There are multiples of some SS titles.

Hmm, and something with wooden legs next to the Fathom....That should spark some interest.

All these jokes about - "hey can you shift the Fathom, I need to move the Medusa to get the Jacks Open down to lift the Surfer which is sitting on top of the World Fair.  The Zip-A-Doo is in the way of the Lucky Strike so I can finally start working on the Diamond Jack."   %$%

I can't spot the DMDs

DMDs are not stored in this building - They are at home and packed up again after I tested all of them. T3 was placed straight into the games room. I'll post pictures later.

The machine next to the Fathom with the wooden legs is a 50's Bingo my Father and I restored - A Bally Miami Beach. We repainted the the cabinet a few years ago and we are waiting on a spare playfield good enough to go in the machine.

Nino,

Just a couple of questions if you don't mind:

1) What was the hardest game/s to source?
2) What game/s did you think would of been hard to source but worked out quite easy to find in the end?
3) Over how long a period was this container put together?

I'd love to John, but then it would not be a "hobby" - if that makes any sense. I want to Enjoy the restores, not depend on them to pay the bills. I will rethink the idea sometime in the future. But not now

1) None were hard to source - but to find so many rare EMs was a thrill. Fathoms are always difficult to find. Viking was the hardest.
2) Fathoms
3) Took me 6 weeks to sort out !

how do you sleep at night knowing that you have all those pins to work on?
can you turn your mind off or do you lie there for hours in bed thinking of this pin and that playfield and so on?

I'm "beyond" that feeling these days. I've been MASSIVELY lucky in my purchases - Right time & right place and knowing the right people. Once I made my decision, I fought really hard to make it happen. There was one point where I lost interest due to the Australian side of the import - You have to learn the "import lingo" and also understand that Freight forwarders don't care about the little guys - just the companies that import containers for a living. My reward for the decision was 50 Pinball machines which will keep me busy for years.

congrats nino on a smart purchase.  #*#

I think Mark is SICK to death of containers ! Seriously - It was more a "Family Affair". Dad used to import containers of Pinballs, Jukes etc in the 50's right through to the 80's - and he wanted to do things "His way" - which slowed us down a little. A couple of his workers did all the lifting. It was too hard to ogranise a "real" container day as the building is on a road - it does not have a easement to drop the container.

Didn't think of that - Two Generations importing pins - That would be a first  %.%

I'll see if I have more pictures to post - Since no one wants to guess the titles (with a couple of exceptions), I'll post that list as well.

Again - Thanks for the words of encouragement. I might even run polls to see what machine to do first etc ?

So Nino, are you planning to sell some off - as thats a lot of pins to hold on to (assuming you have the space)?

What DMDs do you have?

Need to make your place a stop for my next Melbourne pinball trip.

I have the space to hold maybe 50 - 100 more once I sell off the Arcade Cabinets and Billiard Tables. Space is no issue. If I move them to another building, I will have room for 300 - 400, not that I would ever do that ! Dad still has the original "Pinball building" that he built in 1974. Will be vacated within 18 months.

The plan is to restore every single machine - With the exception of one of the Fathoms (not required!). It is simply a case of "I had to get them", and I've got a "lifetime" to restore them ! Just fulfilling a dream - I'm in no rush.

DMDs soon..

Cheers Mark - You have been a great help, and you kept your word when you mentioned (years ago), that if anyone wanted to import a container privately - you would assist.

Now to the DMDs ;

1986 Pinbot
1990 Fun House
1992 The Addams Family

My son has taken ownership of T3 already. Wants the corvette for his bedroom  *.*

As I slowly go through them - Marks going to cop a few orders, I'd say - But he has 7 containers worth of parts coming - so I'm sure he can accommodate ! I want to go through the DMDs so I can "Watch out" for these specials.. But I can't get off the Fathom !

Are you fixing it or playing it?  #@#

Are you going to have a mega-meet when they are all going? (You might need 3 phase....) Or the power meter will sound like a supercharger...

Do they sell novus in 44's?

I must admit - Not much getting done.. I've been playing Fathom on and off most of the arvo (and Galaxy), and I'm slowly working through a plan. Not easy when all your Christmas' come at once..

The EMs will be set up next to each other one day - that's my dream. I want to start with some older titles - Mariner, Aces High and A Go Go..

I need a couple of 44's of Nifti, Rags, and Novus..  %.%

hey nino,

You mention selling some arcade cabs in an earlier post to make way to store some more pinball machines. I'd be interested in some arcade machines when or if you decide to sell??  !@# I'm mostly interested in 70's - 80's vintage games.

sure - No worries Leon. The Video games are basically cabs that we either built (when I was a kid), or were converted in the late 80's. There's nothing post 1987 in there - no dedicated cabinets other than an Original Galaxian, Challenger and some Breakout cabinets converted into video games. There's probably 20 - 30 cabs, some Billiard tables and a restored Bumper Pool table. There is also three car games - Sprint 1 (Kee Games), Grand Trak 10 (Atari) and an Atari Night Driver converted to a Sega "Turbo"..

No more cocktail tables (spoken for) or Jukes - all sold !

PM for more details.

Atari Night Driver...Awesome.....!  Loved that game...I actually think that would have been the first video game I ever played at my local safeway (yep - videos at supermarkets)....
Shame its been converted but I can imagine the game not getting too much love after 1985....

I remember this exact game in "Arthur's Hamburgers" in Broadway Reservoir. Used to play it all the time in the 70's / 80's.

The monitor died and it was converted - I also remember the PAIN of watching the conversion. A "custom" power supply was built especially for this gameboard system. The "Turbo" machine had the controls and a high score display separate from the monitor.

No worries mate - Daniel has first option on Grand Trak 10, so you have first option on Sprint 1. Both are having their boards repaired and checked.

I think my wife would probably leave me or kill me if I brought in my own container of pins!

If there's no love for the Night Driver let me know Nino.  I'd hate to see him left on his own in a big old room full of pins!  Is the conversion beyond reversion?

Sorry Craig - All the Galaga machines went years ago. I do have upright "generic" cabinets suitable for Galaga etc.

Yep - Went through that discussion with my wife. She was supportive, and knows that my vices are all Pinball related. I've always wanted a "steady" flow of restorations and I was lucky in that I have a building to store them in. I can literally just go for a drive and load up an EM and bring it home. But I'll recondition most of the DMDs first before enjoying the EMs and SS. Rather that read about other people doing it - I simply just had to "have a go" !

No worries Marty. I do have some older Atari Tubes in boxes - might even have the original. The board might be a problem, but I do recall seeing the steering assembly around. The "Turbo" conversion is a great playing game - but it would be a challenge to revise !

He's being trying to sell those for a while now.

I think last time they failed to reach any bids starting at about USD$200.

I would love one for my Viking but after freifgt costs its probably gunna be AUD$400 each.

Sure, provided you can demonstrate it meets your funds investment strategy and you lock it away unplayed! Soon as you play a game you've breached the rules and suddenly your fund is no longer getting all those tax breaks if someone was to discover your transgression.

"Top Room" - opposite the Police Station. Had Snooker Tables, some vids and Bingos. I think Dad just operated the bingos, but he owned "Delfino's" which was just down the road. No Billiard Tables there from memory, just a wall of Bingos and Pinballs. Arthur had a very famous Hamburger in the Nothern Suburbs. Dad had Night Driver and an "Evel Knievel" type EM Arcade machine and a couple of pins as well !

it was top room i reckon! we may have called it johnnies, but top room rings a bell for sure. it was a little down the street from the cop shop, prob a few doors up from byfield ave (?) and upstairs. arthurs had the best burgers (right thru our teen years when we ran amok on out treadlies) and my nan and pop took me their for a steak, eggs and chips quite afew times. i cant remember what they had, but i was always much impressed cos they let me have chips and eggs on the same plate but didnt serve up vegies or salad (which is just what a young bloke wanted) and i think they only had a few tables (to eat) also.

i cant remember delfinos to be honest, as the top room was where we went until the bowling alley opened on keon parade (which was only 3 streets from home) and then that was that. the memories of throwing all out money into a 4 wheel driving game that i cant remember the name of, as well as kiss and playboy pins, as well as gorgar is imprinted forever.

what a trip down memory lane and im so happy to have done a littl trip too! thank you!
