Problems resoldering old (dirty) wires
« on: December 08, 2009, 11:36:53 AM »
After seeing all the fantastic restorations on this site, I was inspired to attempt some minor restorations on my EM shooter.
I found some wires that had broken off their tabs, but when attempting to resolder, the wire is oxidised so badly that the solder will not take.
Even after cutting and restripping the wire just won't take any solder.  I have managed to scrape the wires with a knife to restore some "shine" and get solder to hold but they still don't look real good.   !@#
I know that some acid based fluxes can be used to clean the wire but not too sure about potential downfalls of this.
Just wondered what methods AP members use to clean old wires for soldering.
Appreciate any suggestions or ideas.

I first try a solid flux that is inert and non-corrosive (as far as I know). It is an amber colour and does a great job.

If the wires are very stubborn then I resort to the liquid 'acid based' plumbers type flux. It REALLY works well but I always scrub the area soldered with a toothbrush dipped in either acetone or isopropyl alcohol. This prevents the acid from damaging the wires/connectors and other parts.

I have never had any long term problems using it this way.

Man, that stuff is magic! Is there anything it can't do?   :lol

Rannex Rustbusters - try your local Bunnings. Mostly used to clean up rusty parts - works really well - take a look at the AP Haunted House restoration for some proof that you can turn a rusty wreck into a pinball machine with the magic of Rannex!

Thanks for the quick replies.
Looks like I'll defintely have to get some rannex!
Was going to go to Bunnings anyway, as I ran out of elbow grease yesterday. %$%

Do you need to "neutralize" the Rannex after use like the acid flux?
Thanks again.
Steve.

Hi Tony.
It's a Midway Duck Hunt.
I bought it about 10 years ago in pretty bad condition and in quite a few peices.
Got it put back together but it's been missing the bulb from the gun. (Finally tracked one down and it should be arriving soon!)
Also missing a couple of small motors from two of the targets, but actually works quite well otherwise.

I've got a heap of pics but not too sure if much interest here as it's not strictly a pinball.
Cheers
Steve.
