What a shit feeling...all IT guys, just not enough work for them.

Not a good vibe here right now.

Anybody else's place of employment bit the bullet yet?

Sorry to hear that Tony . Where I am we've been lucky so far but we are a global business of which Australia/New Zealand is just a small part so fingers crossed we'll be OK. We are also a Telecommunications business and they are traditionally largely not as affected in recessions. We are still meeting the business financial targets so far.
I need more room ! and more $$$

I'm self-employed but having come from a corporate IT background I gotta say it's a very competitive field.  There's so many young kids coming out into the workforce that are so switched on!  The older you get in the IT/Comms industry the more you need to be prepared to enter into a management or mentoring role otherwise you're gonna be stuck making crap money working the help-desk alongside pimple faced IT graduates ;)

Yeah my company let go 150 odd people (out of 4000 odd) and thats despite us having our best year ever last year. I think for some companies its just an excuse to cut their wages bill for a while ...  ^.^

Yeah our company has dropped from 35 IT staff to around 10 by September. Most of the work will be outsourced to India... Fun times ahead.

Sorry to hear about your colleagues Tony, and hoping your position stays secure.

I work for myself, by myself these days, and I think I might need to lay myself off soon...

The funny thing is that little of the extra profit gained from moving to the cheaper outsource model goes to improve service levels.
