Re-birthing something into KISS
« on: December 26, 2008, 10:35:20 AM »
Just toying with the idea of re-birthing a Bally SS machine of the same era into a KISS. I've noticed that even crap KISS's demand top $$$ so what if I were to get a machine with the same cabinet design, then repaint the cabinet, find a backglass, find a populated playfield or even get a repro playfield and transfer over the wiring and all hardware from a clapped out one. The boards would be the same - except for the ROM's right?.

Is there anything specific to KISS that I won't find on another machine?

Does this sound feasible at all or am I dreaming?

Not as easy as it might sound.  Don't forget that KISS has the extra lights in the head dirven by an aux. lamp driver.  Also KISS has a different transformer than the 'standard' for the era.  When playfields and backglasses were reproduced people looked at doing this, but I am not sure how many actually went ahead.

Should be achievable, but a lot of work - you would probably need a KISS on-hand to 'copy'.

cheers
Ian

Not the first time this question has been asked. Technically - Can be done, but to be done properly, it will take many hours. As Ian pointed out, you need to copy the lightboard in the backbox. Power supply board could be a repro (Greg stocks them) - so you only need a donor machine.

Personally, if someone asked me to do it - I would not. As a KISS fan myself, I would see it as fraudulent..But then again, if a machine I want to buy does not have matching serial numbers on the headbox / body, I would not buy it..So my view might be a bit "extreme"..

If you are going to invest in a title such as KISS, it should be original. Same goes for the "King of Diamonds" repro, or the rumored "Medieval Madness" repro - They are just as "Not original"..

A rough KISS is the best option..

This really happening? I thought it was just a bad dream....

Let's assume it does - or ANY pinball for that matter - it is NOT original. It was not made from the original factory, using original parts DURING a production run.

I appreciate the HARD work that does into the "King of Diamonds" remake - But I would never buy it as it is not even the correct SHAPE of the the original classic machine.

I guess if you have a "donor" machine - missing backglass and playfield and you had a KISS playfield and backglass missing - then you would be "saving" a machine, but it would be more like a "Frankenstein" than a "KISS"

re birthing  has been done and will continue to be done.
we are child have NEVER done this   but I must say I do have a spare Kiss playfield with 90% complete and a backglass

as for late model  ones  I am sure most WPC95   are pretty well close and you could do this too   again we have NEVER done this

i had 2 kiss pins  and listed one on ebay before christmas and sold to a local guy  and then sold the second one to someone who missed the one on ebay

Hi MarkC...
I'm the guy who bought the Kiss pinball on Ebay...
I just joined this forum to get info and stay in touch with the machine.
The machine is going awesome. Thanks so much.
I'll contact you soon.
It has a couple of blown globes now and may need a couple of adjustments.

Cheers.
