Title: Bally Space Invaders Restore
Post by: Strangeways on December 28, 2008, 12:23:50 AM

Background

Bally Space Invaders was one of my "all time" Favorite Pinballs from the Golden era of Solid States. Dad and I pickup up a shipment of NIB Bally pins when I was kid in 1979 or 80 - I can't remember.. The shipment included Paragon, KISS X 2, Mata Hari X ?? and a Space Invaders. We took them home in the truck and unboxed them. They were stripped of their playfield parts and contact was placed on their playfields (same as the book covers used in libraries - mylar did not exist yet). The parts were re assembled and the machines were on location within a week. Paragon sat next to the Space Invaders in a cafe near my place.. These two machines needed to be emptied TWICE a week in the early days.. I had already developed a "soft spot" for Paragon, but I was a little "frightened" by the Spacies.. I do remember the playfield glass exploding in Dad's hands one Sunday morning. The first of many !

The Paragon sits in my gamesroom. Both Kiss machines are in the garage (stored). Dad sold the Space Invaders YEARS ago. But I really wanted one, just to re unite the Spacies and the Paragon in my gamesroom, and to remind me of the old days...

For a few years, I kept my eye out for a nice Spacies, but really never found one that I liked. Then I got a phone call from a guy in a cafe in Melbourne.. He had a space Invaders machine and he wanted to sell.. So I agreed to buy it.. But it was in storage and he needed to get to it. When he was able to - he would call me... Months passed - no call - So I called him - It was still there, but he "forgot" the price, and added a couple hundred on to it.. I agreed, and then waited for his call to pick it up.. I waited, and waited, then I called him.. Long story short - he sold it.. So I missed out - after being told it was mine ..

Wotto went on his infamous "Pinball Purge", and sold a Black Knight, Flash and Gorgar ?... and I knew he had a space Invaders he was having trouble with... So I TWISTED his arm... MANY TIMES.... Over and Over.... Until he finally agreed to part with it ! A friend of mine wanted Wotto's TIME WARP, so I helped him out and Wotto sent the Space Invaders and the Time Warp via a transport company..

Finally, I had that elusive Space Invaders....

Initial Pictures

Here's a couple of pictures the day it arrived (some 2 years ago);

Fair enough - nothing exciting here - But Wotto did a GREAT job packing the machine for me and it arrived safely..

What an AWESOME Backglass !!

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010070.JPG)

Playfield was REALLY good - Wotto did all the HARD work of removing the mylar (Yipee!)

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010071.jpg)

Box of spares and the legs... Wait until I post pictures of the power supply....  #@#

Playfield is in GREAT Shape !

Machine assembled - just for a quick peek..

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010077.jpg)

Condition

Backglass 10/10 - Spacies backglasses (inner and outer) are always PERFECT
Playfield 8/10 - Mylar was removed, nice plastics set, bumper caps and targets were already sourced by Wotto..Only wear was around the centre
Cabinet 8/10 - Paintwork was fine, but there were a few "dings" in the corners and some work that needed to be done..
Electronics 6/10 - Power supply was a Frankenstein, Displays needed to be fixed, and all the boards ended up having some work done to them.

Overall - I was stoked to have a Space Invaders from Wotto - as we both contributed to its restoration.. That will become apparent as the thread progresses. This machine is finished, but I thought I'd document this here as I was very thorough with my notes and pictures !

More later !

Do you still have the machine Nino?

Thanks for that Nino, I have a fascination with this game, enjoyed the pictures.

Now, given my well-publicized view of ESB game play (which was copied from this game) - can you give me some thoughts on the game play on SI??? I recall it as OK back in the day, but 20-odd years have a way of distorting memory...

Do you still have the machine Nino?

No. The game spooked my wife - She hated the entire theme of the game and the backglass in particular. My son loved it, but he also had nightmares about it. I sold it to a Collector, who incidentally, bought my restored Jacks Open and Strikes and Spares. I also restored his Genie.

Space Invaders is a game that is more "atmospheric" - Great visuals and awesome sounds. It is not really a player. Another game that copied SI was Bally "Mystic" - which I refer to as a single body SI.

While SI was in the gamesroom, it was the most played machine. I enjoyed playing it, but it is no "Fathom".. Not really as slow as other widebodies, but it is a simple game with a shallow ruleset. I love the shot to the LHS which hits a captive ball into a spot target. I WISH it was a set of in-ling drop targets...

I loved Space Invaders, but the other reason I sold it was because it was not "Dad's" from the old days. By no means was the game a disappointment. It did free up the $$$ to buy a Fathom, so it will always be remembered !

SI is a great looking pin, love all the fine detailed artwork on the PF
Title: Re: Bally Space Invaders Restore - Cabinet
Post by: Strangeways on December 29, 2008, 12:33:11 AM

I'll break the restore into different parts, as there is a fair bit to cover. The first part will be the Cabinet...

Cabinet

The artwork itself is really good. A little bit of fade at the front of the cabinet, but it is all part of the character and there was no requirement for a repaint. The inside of the cabinet was a bit of a mess, so it was time for a "tidy up". Everything is ripped out of the machine - but before doing that - A photo diary must be kept so that I know where the parts belong when it is time to re assemble..So here are the reference pictures ;

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010043.JPG)

The door is a bit of a mess - as 99% of all the machines I've seen are !!

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010045.JPG)

Here's a problem with the corner that will need to be addressed.

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010050.jpg)

The main issue I will have to address is the fact that the Space Invaders head is VERY heavy, as it has a foldout door with two backglasses, and the neck of the head is broken on the cabinet itself...

I have a fix for this that was successful with a Future Spa I did years ago...

Title: Re: Bally Space Invaders Restore - Cabinet Repair
Post by: Strangeways on December 29, 2008, 02:37:03 PM

Cabinet Repair

The internal parts are removed and cleaned - some will be polished and the power supply will be rebuilt.

Since the back (neck) section was weak from holding up such a heavy head, I needed to repair this before anything else. The section that the neck is mounted on will be glued and fixed with 75 mm woodscrews. The join needs to be opened using a thin piece of metal and the PVC glue is applied. The holes for the screws are pre drilled, and then the screws are screwed in with a hand drill. Clamps are used to hold the section together overnight.

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010010.JPG)

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/braces.jpg)

The corners were repaired and sanded off. The bog I used is the same color as is used on the body, so I left it "as is" - and furthermore, the repairs are mainly under the legs;

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010008.JPG)

The metal sheet under the coin box was rusted, so I gave it a quick sand, primed it and then painted it..

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Picture%20033a.jpg)

Time to paint the inside of the cabinet. I didnt really mask off the inside of the cabinet at all - other than the siderails and the neck section. I then just painted the entire front section and the sides where the playfield is fitted.

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010005.jpg)

The metal grill on the neck is cleaned, primed and painted a semi gloss black - same with the neck section itself.

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Picture%20042a.jpg)

The legs are installed so I can have a solid base to work on..

Now I just have to re assemble  :D

Post by: Strangeways on January 02, 2009, 11:11:58 AM

Time to put the cabinet internals back together, Bet before that happens, the door needs to be addressed.

Coin Door

The coin door is like all doors from this genre - Filthy - Full of dirt, grime, Coca Cola... So I strip everything and soak in hot water with nifti. This loosens the dirt and then I can see what needs to be scrubbed and then polished.

Here are some before pictures ;

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010014_2.JPG)

Most of the smaller pieces go straight into the tumber, the rest are polished on the buffing wheel. The Door Skin is re-grained with 320 Wet/Dry and windex. The cables are tidied up and then the door can mounted and adjusted..

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010018_2.JPG)

Lock down Bar

Always the most filthiest part of a machine.. Thankfully, Bally LDBs are easy to strip and clean. I used Brasso, Green Scotchbrites and a lot of elbow grease to get it super shiney. Reassemble and then finally mount on to the machine.

Re Assembly

All the internal parts are polished and cleaned. Time to reassemble - which is a straight forward task. The Pwer Supply will be covered later..

I usually re grain the skin (outside), and polish the coin entry facade with the buffing wheel.
The inside of the door is usually cleaned with a scotchbrite and brasso. Then I will polish with brasso and a rag.

Some parts are polished with a soft wire wheel on my bench grinder, and then on the buffing wheel.

For surface rust, I used the Ranex product (see Sinbad thread).. But honestly, unless the parts are treated or recoated, they will eventually react with humidity over time.

Have heard of backglasses expoding a few times in peoples hands....would say it would be the differences in temperature from the persons hands and the glass. Same with placing backglasses (and playfield glass) directly on the ground against the wall when the floor is cement. ALWAYS place a towel or something similiar down first!

Power Supply Rebuild

As soon as I saw the power board in this game, I just knew it was not right to just rebuild the current board. So I bought a new board from GPE and installed it. So I guess it is not a Power board rebuild, but a replacement !

This is the moment of truth - "pop the bonnet" and this is what caught my attention ;

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010075.JPG)

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010023.JPG)

Once I removed the panel out of the game and I saw the full extent of the condition of the board, I knew it had to be replaced.

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010055.JPG)

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010026.JPG)

Out with the old, and in with the new. The instructions that come with the board are very easy to follow. Just remove the wires from the old board and solder them onto the designated points on the new board. It took about 20 minutes to rewire and double check.

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010027.JPG)

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010028.JPG)

I sanded the base board down, washed and polished the metal mounting board. Reassembled with new PCB Stand ups and I'm nearly done !

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010032.JPG)

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010059.JPG)

The protective panel was a bit dirty, so a quick clean and spray with some Black paint..

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010031.JPG)

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010034.JPG)

Finally mounted back in the cabinet. The connectors are repinned with the new pins and housings that are included with the board. Probably took 2 hours all up, and cost $100 - But the rebuild will make the game reliable and it looks a lot better !!

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Picture%20063_resize.jpg)

Next update will be the playfield strip and flipper rebuilds !

Title: Re: Bally Space Invaders Restore - Playfield !
Post by: Strangeways on January 13, 2009, 11:17:17 AM

Playfield

The playfield was previously worked on by Wotto. He removed the mylar, so all the hard work was already done for me. However, I wanted to do remove all the parts from the top of the playfield anyway, and attend to the centre horse shoe area. Looking at the "before" picture below, the area looks to be in good condition. It was previously work to wood and the rollovers had to be replaced. There was also two holes near the "Special When Lit" inserts. It looks like the Operator installed some miniposts near the entrance - Nasty !!

Wotto created, printed and installed the decal and it looks incredible. It was lifting under the posts, so I thought I would address that later on with a sheet of mylar. Notice the new Bumper Caps, and all the plastics are in great condition. Not much to do here, but I'll use any excuse to strip a playfield !

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%202%20004.jpg)

Even though the mylar was removed, there was still a "dullness" to the playfield. However it was still in great condition.

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%202%20078.jpg)

Here's a closeup of the Horse Shoe area with the decal installed. The idea is to protect the area with a sheet of mylar. There was some touch up work done where the decal joined the playfield.

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%203%201010011.jpg)

The area I had to cover had to be bigger than the decal and also be alighned under the playfield hardware. So I drew a template for the mylar ;

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010035.JPG)

Cut the piece of mylar to size and position on the playfield ;

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010034.JPG)

Mylar sheet installed - Note that you can see the mylar between the "3X" and "4X" Bonus inserts. It looks a lot better from the player's view.

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010033.JPG)

The playfield has been cleaned with Novus 2 and has its first coat of wax.

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/P1010040.JPG)

Under the Playfield

This is where quite a lot of work was required. The Flipper assemblies are very worn. I decided new coils and rebuild kits were required. The EOS and the "advanced" EOS on these pins are crucial to be in good working order. The coil values were not correct, so I ordered them as well.

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%202%20032.JPG)

The Target Banks will be rebuilt, as will every other moving part ;

(http://www.aussiepinball.com/strangeways/restores/SpaceInv/Space%20Invaders%202%20037.JPG)

Sneak Peek !

Here's a picture of the flipper coil bases. The middle two have been polished - just for kicks ! Here's a tip - Notice the coil stop screw holes - They are worn and oversized screws have damaged the holes themselves. So new screws will eventually loosen in time. All you need to do is SWAP them over - so that the coil stop is in the next two holes mext to the originals. These plates can be used for LHS or RHS. I ALWAYS swap them over and use the new holes.

Hey Nino,

Nice to see a thread on this machine.

The decal for that playfield is just OK.
I was never totally happy with the colouring ( it looks a lot better in RL than under the flash of a camera I have to say )
The playfield is 100% better than what it was and that decaled area was back to the wood – so it is an improvement but the colours didn’t match  that well.

I LOVE the artwork on this playfield, so much so I was going to get one of the ‘heads’ as a tattoo once !

I will look to see if I have some shots of the playfield as it was originally and post them in this thread if that’s OK ?

Tony - I have HEAPS of Restores that I have not documented on any forum. Spacies is a machine I did a while ago, but I thought I'd share it now as I'm not really working on any current restores other than the Pro Football - and that's on hold until I can paint it. The Flash and Sinbad were the last restores I have done in recent times. The Flash is waiting for the Sinbad - So they can be sent together to Tony. The Sinbad is waiting for Gav to repair the backglass art.. So I have no room at the moment to start the Time Warp or Buccaneer.

What other machines can I feature on a restore thread - Big Deal, Solar Ride, Skateball, Hot Hand, Meteor, Paragon...

What machines are in the pipeline - Spirit, Haunted House, Fathom, Medusa, Flight2000, Sky Jump, Playboy, KISS, Volley, Spirit of 76...

Yes - The spacies was a ripper when Wotto sold it to me - and I was planning on keeping it. In the end, the missus "won", and I got to use the proceeds for the sale to buy my Fathom project !

It was great getting that mylar off and polishing / touching up this PF to achieve the end result compared to where it started. Again- GREAT art on this PF !!

It came without half the PF plastics and I ended up with 2 sets in the end, I also bought new bumpers, caps etc.

Seriously, it is unbelievable the lengths some people went to hack the old Bally and Stern power supplies !!!  Surprising thing is the machines are often still going, if somewhat unreliably.

Hey Nino, can't believe you did not rebuild the power supply - weren't you up to the challenge *)*

Seriously, it is unbelievable the lengths some people went to hack the old Bally and Stern power supplies !!!  Surprising thing is the machines are often still going, if somewhat unreliably.

cheers

The thought crossed my mind.. But Spacies came out with a -49 power board. What was in THIS Spacies was a -18 board soldered to a "trimmed" -49 Board (just the VAROs). So it was not original, and it was a "dog's breakfast"  ^.^

I will rebuild the -18 board in time. I have a box of old ones so one day I'll immerse myself in rebuilding a few !

Underside playfield Work done

I decided early on to replace the flipper mechanisms, as they were the original sets and the coils were a mixed bunch. I wanted the game to play as fast as possible, as some collectors are of the opinion that Spacies is a slow game, and also I wanted the game to be in mechanically, great condition. So I ordered the correct coils and 2 flipper kits from Pinball Resource. In addition to the standard EOS, Spacies uses an "Advanced EOS" which routes the current from the lower set of flippers to the top set after the standard EOS is closed on the lower points.

Here's a close-up of the Advanced EOS mounted on the standard EOS on the lower Flipper ;

The top flipper has an extra set of switches - these trigger the sound that is heard when the flippers are pressed. Note that I ALWAYS trim off the end of the wires and restrip them, soldering on a new connection.

All four kits are installed and ready to go !

I rebuilt all the mechanisms, including the single target bank. Wotto already ordered the new targets with the machine, so it was simply a matter of installing the target. After a rebuild, these targets are very "snappy".. Does not take long to strip the parts off the assemblies and give them a clean with Nifti. MOST of the time I soak moving parts in Isocol and wash the crap off them with a toothbrush. Then they look like this ;

Upper Playfield

After cleaning the playfield and giving it a good polish, it all comes together very nicely. I've simply positioned the plastics to see how it will all look. The Target banks and flippers have not been installed as yet.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate,

This old girl is really coming together - she is looking better and better every post.

Lucky Wotto did all the hard work for you before you got it  #@#

Just one silly question - what is Isocol - and where do you buy it?

Hey Tony, Iv'e seen Isocol at Coles supermarkets., from memory it was cheaper & in a bigger bottle than the Isopropyl alcohol I bought at bunnings ( I'm still using it but will buy isocol when this runs out )

I waited until Wotto did all the hard work..  %.%

People kept asking us to combine our efforts on a Pinball - So there you have it

Isocol is 63% Alcohol and is also known as "Rubbing Alcohol" - sold at supermarkets, but more often Chemists. I use it all time time to soak stepper unit parts on EMs.. It has a really nice smell as well !

Title: Re: Bally Space Invaders Restore - Finished

Spacies Finished !

The playfield was dropped into the cabinet and apart from a few small issues, the game worked fine. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures of the boards, but I definitely upgraded the Solenoid Driver Board and MPU. It played fast and I enjoyed the game while I still owned it. I clocked it once, and never got close to it again !

Here's some finished shots;

The game now sits at within a Collector's gamesroom with the Jacks Open, Strikes and Spares and Genie - All which I restored within the last 4 years.

Big Special thanks to Wotto who sold it to me when I was looking for a Spacies. The decal really came up well, as did the  mylar.. $#$

Theres something really special about these Bally SS machines, I never tire of working on them !

Top work as usual Nino $%$

I always found SI as a great machine to look at but a bit of a pig to play - too slow and relied too much on the high risk/reward shot of the horseshoe.

Paragon kills it for game play, but I am sure you already knew that!

cheers

Cheers Ian..

Paragon is a completely different beast.. I'd love to add an Embryon one day. I think Embryon, Paragon and Hot Doggin' are the Bally Widebodies to have in a collection. Even though Future Spa was popular, I didn't like it. If Space Invaders had another theme, but the same layout, it would on par with Future Spa.

I have never seen or played a Future SPA, Embryon or Hot Doggin'.  Artwork on FSPA would put me off, by Embryon looks interesting in photos...maybe somewhere down the track.

cheers
