WMS Stellar Wars - Overheating coil and moved EOS switch
« on: August 09, 2010, 06:09:33 PM »
Hi to all.  Just picked up a Stellar Wars and after playing a couple of games, I noticed the left flipper starting losing power.

On examination the coil was very hot. (Burn your fingers hot). #@!

Also noted 2 other things - the coil bracket was a little bit loose and also the EOS switch had been moved backwards(twice! See photo.)
Basically the result is that the EOS opens a bit later than it probably should.  Would this be enough to overheat the coil so drastically?

Or could the loose bracket have caused enough binding/friction on the plunger?

Obviously I will tighten the bracket on reinstall and I have already filled the damged area near the EOS so that I can move it back to it's original position.

Is there anything else I should check?

Yea the EPA switch would be the problem but I'd also be checking the coil resistance if it's been cooked it won't be working properly either

Thanks for that Daniel.

I guess the low resistance side is toast- I read 0.6 Ohms and 25.4 ohms (should be lR1/24R6).

Just about to order a replacement now.

Edit: Please excuse my ignorance but what does EPA stand for?

A badly adjuted EOS will lead to the coil getting hot and over time, this will cook the coil. Looking at that picture, I guess the EOS bracket was moved to allow more power to the coil (EOS opens later) - this was typical in the "old days" to get the most power out of a coil.

also check the contacts on the EOS

If they are grey and pitted (and from the photos they look like it), you may also want to order a new EOS switch - a cooked EOS switch can cause shorts that will blow fuses

Thanks for the good tips guys. ^^^
I will definitely order full rebuild kit for both flippers in the very near future.

Just wondered if it's worth upgrading to later model flipper assemblies?
The rebuild kit seems a bit dearer for the early flippers.

Also just have to say how much I love the sound on this machine, really takes me back.

I've got newer - single base plate flippers on Firepower and older ones with the seperate return stop on Gorgar and I can't pick any difference.
