Title: Playable Public Pinball in Melbourne & Sydney
Post by: HOW on December 04, 2009, 08:23:16 PM
 $.$
Hi there All,

I just wanted to know the situation re. tables on location in both Sydney and Melbourne?

I'm an early-40's Pom currently residing in Christchurch - loved my pinball in the 80's and early 90's - but it died off a bit in the UK.
Was getting my fix via Visual Pinball/PinMAME (is this blasphemous?! ::)) until I arrived in Chch where they still have some REAL tables  #*#. In fact I've found some new Sterns (FG - Coooool, New Batman, Spiderman, New IJ (yuk), etc). But also a TZ, old Bally Space Invaders, Flintstones and Dr Who tables that are publicly playable  ^^^

I'm off across the ditch visiting both Sydney and Mebourne in 2010 - and wondered what the situation is there? I understand you have Timezones? - Do they have new Sterns? Are there any classic 90's tables available to play on location? I'd love session on The Getaway :)

Look forward to any suggestions, advice, etc.

Many thanks in advance

Andy

Giday Andy,  %)%

There are only a handful of the 'Timezone' type places now, unfortunately with very little or no pins.

BUT Melbourne is the Pinball capital of Australia.  We've got some of the best dealers with quite a large stock of pins on site, ready to play (free yay!).

MarkC (PinballSpareParts) is in Bayswater (about 50min) from CBD and Bumper Action in CBD (one of the best looking showrooms ever! - they also hold weekly Friday night pizza / drinks nights).  There is also Zax amusements (not far from Bumper) and BCW in Campbellfield (about 25min from CBD).  Between them all is a huge amount of new (MarkC should have NIB Sterns in the showroom) and used pins...

Hi Andy &  %)%,

I played a 1980's Space Invaders pinball in a burger bar in Manchester st (CBD) last month, they had a twilight zone & flinestones as well. There's a pinball shop at 634 Ferry Rd in Woolston as well.

For the best collection of late model pins in the south island, you must check out mike's (pinmadd) collection he has sweet collection of pins, top bloke as well. #*#

Hi there ALL - and thanks for the great welcome.

So no CBD pinballs in Sydney or Melbourne????
That's a bit disappointing....

But to discover a Getaway right here in Chch.... :D - It looks MINT too Pinmadd/Mike  $#$

On the Oz front I seem to remember an arcade in a shopping mall in Sydney....Galaxy (?)...Do they have any pins?
And I vaguely remember reading of a place in Melbourne with multiple tables that had an unfortunate fire (?)...di that ever reopen?

Pinmadd/Mike - any other people our side of the ditch on here?

Also - a general Australasian question - anyone managed to get a copy of the 'Pinball 101' DVD this side of the world?  !@#
If so - who did you order through?

Thanks, Andy

Not quite Sydney CBD but there are usually three pins at Bill and Tony's cafe on Stanley St East Sydney (near Kings Cross). Last time I was there they had a TOTAN and Scared Stiff don't remember the third.

That is good to hear,

When I worked in the Sydney CBD used to go down to Bill and Tony's every couple of weeks.....haven't worked up there for over 10 years but they had the pins there back then also....and one of them was Scared Stiff

Hey Tony, yeah it's a good way to kill time while you wait for lunch. Surprising how many suit wearers play the games in there.

There was a guy opening a pinball cafe somewhere down Huntingdale (Melbourne) way from memory (open to correction on that one), but a week or two before opening there was a fire. He had plans to reopen but I don't think that has happened yet as I imagine we would have heard about it.

We seriously need that.

I had some early video games out at a mates tavern for a while, but they just end up getting trashed.

People seem to think that its ok to graffiti the machines and tip drinks in them etc. I pulled them out after 4 weeks.

:)

There are a few pins in Sydney CBD,
Windsor hotel has TZ, NF and RS
The James Squire on King Street wharf has Stern Indy Jones & t2 - good beer too brewed on premesis
The sports bar in Menzies hotel has STTNG, IJ and SS
but the best place to go would be Newtown which is just 2km from CBD which has nice pubs with pins
eg Court House hotel - Spiderman, TZ, AF, JY, Congo - and good place for a feed too
& walking distance from Courthouse is the Sandringham hotel with MM & IJ

There is a sticky on this web site which is a database of pin locations - can't find it right now but if you look around you'll find it

Unfortunately Finny has decided not to attempt to rebuild his Pin/Cafe. After all the hard work he put in the fire and subsequent crap that followed has led him to scrap the idea. Such a shame after all the hard work he'd already done.

I'm from Melbourne and I get my pinnie fix from The Cue (pool hall & bar) on Brunswick St, Fitzroy.

It had 4 good working pins last I looked: Monster Bash, Attack from Mars, Tales of the Arabian Nights & another I can't remember (err..getting old).

It's a 10 min tram ride and is a cool shopping & cafe/bar precinct.

Went to "Xanadu" kids playground in Hallam.

Has the most f***ed up Baywatch, no display, half the globes are out, can't read any of the writing on the playfield for dirt... Great machine...

Gave up on it and went and played the Sega rally twin sitting next to it, coin mech on the left didn't work, screen on the right had horizontal jitters and was moving about 6 inches left and right... Thought I was going to have a seizure...

I asked the owner (thinking they were his machines), he told me that 3 different guys come in and "look after" the machines, commented that maybe they need a new career choice...

Hi there all,

Hope everyone had a good Xmas and New Year.
Just wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions for public pins in Melbourne & Sydney.
I've had a look on Google maps and think I have the addresses of places mentioned correct - appreciate it if anyone can correct any errors though.
Really must ry to get to that Sandringham Hotel as never played a real-life MM - only a Visual Pinball approximation.
The other game I'd wanna try is SW-E1 as never played a Pinball 2000 machine either, and there's no PC-playable emulation of them as yet. I'd rather it was an RFM but hey :)
Thanks again all  ^^^

EDIT: Oh- I forgot - there was large arcade in the Mall where Paddy's is last time I was in Sydney- think it was called 'Galaxy' - do they have any pins as far as anyone knows? I'll probably pop in as like vids too - and a sucker for Sega Rally 3 LOL

Not sure about Kiss & Playboy......an age thing  %$%
Can certainly remember plenty of Addams Family & Getaways back in the UK in the early 90's though.
Well you'd be hard pressed to find any pins in Blighty now.
I think I'm blessed to be this end of the world - I get to play a TZ, FG, Flintstones, Dr.Who - and now there's a CSI pretty regularly on location.
Looking forward to Oz in general - but pins are nice bonus  () #*#

@Homepin: I wondered if run by same persopn - as both had changing banners with some pretty cool artwork  *%*Tempted to 'borrow' some of those banners for a T-Shirt......  && LOL

I mentioned new CSI - What's others thoughts? It seemed OK to me - but the new Stern builds such as new IJ,new Batman, and this CSI seem 'plasticky' if you know what I mean? - Compared to say a couple of Sterns I've played lately - ie. an FG and Stern Spiderman.

Hi there All,

Back from the trip a week or so now - Thought I'd say thanks for the info

Out of the list provided I managed to get to, and play the following  $#$

Melbourne Pins (Missed the storm/hail by a week - looked awful).

The Lounge - Scared Stiff

Kingpin Bowling in the Crowne Complex - for The Simpsons Pinball Party - there was no Family Guy, and I didn't play Pirates Of The Caribbean.
There was a Star Wars Episode 1 but.....I left that as next to the SWE1 was a Revenge From Mars!!!  ^^^
Crown Casino Bar - Monster Bash

Didn't make it to The Cue Club in Fitzroy -so missed Attack from  - Maybe next time.

Pins in Sydney CBD:

Windsor Hotel - had TZ, NF and RS - but only No fear working, and was being reserved/played  !!!

Got out to Newtown as my other half was looking for an Ibrik in a coffee shop out that way.

Found the Court House Hotel, but she was not impressed by the rowdiness  %.%, so missed out on - Spiderman, TZ, AF, JY, Congo, etc.

However I got to the Sandringham Hotel for MM which I really enjoyed   *%*- You have to remember that these machines I played I've never played in real life before - only via simulation on Visual Pinball (Revenge excepted as I thought I'd NEVER  get to play that!)

Nice bonus was Queen Victoria Hotel on Ensmore Street - They had The Getaway (I've played this before back in the 90's in UK- a personal fave, a SE Playboy....but I left that as they had a CV! - another game I've always wanted to play ().

So thanks all - You were a great help  #*# #*# #*#

Played TAF and STTNG at the Dural Hotel Motel in northwestern Sydney last night. They've been there for a few months and no sign of them disappearing. Even if they do, they'll probably be replaced.

Long drive from the city though.
