This is a "Holy Grail" pinball that was on my radar for at least 10 years. I have one now, which will be documented in time, but this game is for an astute collector that wants a "Nearly In Box" Embryon to sit aside the Fathom I restored a few years ago. The history of this game is interesting. It was claimed to be a prototype at one stage, as the spinner was disabled and a rollover was DRILLED into the playfield. It took some research to find out that it was not a prototype, but it was so well done, that it took some time to work it out ! Once that was confirmed, we decided to restore the playfield to original design.
The game was presented in a cosmetically interesting condition. From a distance, the playfield looked reasonable. It appeared to have factory mylar, but I questioned this straight away, as Bally were not mylaring playfields in 1981. It was a "patchwork quilt" of mylar ! There were literally layers. Mylar was applied on previously touched up areas. This may be a "Holy Grail" pinball, but it has some concealed repairs that would look great in photos !
The cabinet had some wear and tear. It appears a transformer was bolted to the side of the cabinet at one stage with some breathing holes. Interesting. The paint was fading. The backglass had to be stored at home as I was moving from the Garage to the new building and I didn't want to risk any damage.
The boards looked tired, so I didn't bother firing it up.
So now we go back to my personal Embryon. A literal "basket case". So we have scope for at least two High End Restorations. I spoke to Tim at HRP and discussed options for the playfield restorations. He was VERY enthused for the challenge. so we put the call out ;
http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=13160.0 (http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=13160.0)
Two more AP members stepped forward. One member stripped his own playfield and another brought the playfield to APR to strip. We now had FOUR playfields.
Here is the link to the INCREDIBLE work Tim and Stu do at HRP - http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=13623.0 (http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=13623.0)
Here are some pictures of the game as presented ;

Here's my submission for "hack of the year". A Gottlieb SYS1 Flipper assembly ! I know the bally Linear flipper system is crap, but to replace it with a Gottlieb assembly is interesting !

An aftermarket transformer and some holes drilled for airflow.. More interesting mods !

Progress
The day FOUR restored Embryon playfields were returned to APR (see thread above). HRP are in a league of their own @@*
(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/EmbryonGD/Embryon%20Playfields%20001.jpg)
Here is an interesting observation. The two playfields below are obviously Embryons, but with several color differences. When we decided on the project, we assumed all playfield were EXACTLY the same. but they are clearly not (check out the greys).

The before and afters are amazing. Embryon as NIB will be special, makes me want one #.#

It appears to have been a transformer. The mounting holes and the shadow of filth and overheating on the side of the cabinet were a dead giveaway. That's why I didn't bother powering it up. Maybe it was used to power the GTB flipper mech :D
-
Might one of these be for me ol mate over here in WA? I really want to play one of these beasts one day ^^^

Great stuff Nino, I've been looking forward to your resto thread on one of these since I heard about the playfield restorations. Such a beautiful looking game.
-
Those playfields look amazing, nice work on restoring them
With the 2 colour variations,
I prefer the one on the right with the light brown tones on the sides of playfield , and the Insert lettering looks a lot clearer .
How many are you rebuilding?
Oh and i agree some of the Bally mechs are a little bit crappy , el cheapo , The Gottlieb stuff almost never breaks, i suppose thats why they got reused all the time..
keep up the great work ..

This particular game is for a collector in NSW. The other one is my personal Embryon. I was going to do them concurrently, but I won't have the time to do mine.
The other two playfields were provided by customers who wanted their playfields restored.

A number of challenges has been an ongoing issue with this restoration, and most of them surround the cabinet. A lot of work has been completed on the cabinet, but that will be in a separate update.
We move on to the lower side of the playfield. This era of Ballys has the white plastic #555 lamp sockets. Troublesome, and there are no replacements. This is where we need to look at the alternatives such as the standard #47 lamp sockets in various configurations. Obviously, if we replace the sockets, we have to replace the GI and feature lamp braid. Time consuming !
Here is the GI lamp circuit braid installed ;

Each individual part is cleaned and polished. Ready for installation on the upper or lower playfield

Rebuilt Drop Target Assemblies

Every single switch has it's capacitor cut. Rather then replace the capacitor, the operator snipped the cap !

When you go down the round to repainting the cabinet, contact me prior as there are issues with stencils that have created a lot of extra work due to misrepresentation of the materials.
-
The cabinet repainting was a long saga, that finally, was completed after a long delay. I don't like to badmouth suppliers, but there are stencil providers that you simply should not go near. I won't mention their name, as you cannot get ripped off by them any longer. They company is USA based. How I miss Gavin's stencils. so easy to use and always worked out. Anyway, I'll try and point out the issues along the way, but lets start with something positive.
I took the cabinet to my paint supplier and he matched the colours and the finish perfectly. There were a lot of repairs to this cabinet, particularly under the cabinet, which needed new wood trim. That was several sessions of repairs. Next the undercoat, and I had to do more coats than usual, as the timber was thirsty ! I don't like the "plastic" or "glass" look of other paints, I like a bit roughness - it is timber, not plastic. So I go authentic.
Here's the undercoat after the last sanding session ;
(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/EmbryonGD/Embryon%20GD%20559_resize.jpg)
(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/EmbryonGD/Embryon%20GD%20558_resize.jpg)
The base coat is applied, and is left in the sun to dry. This paint is touch dry in 5 minutes, ans after 2 hours in the sun, you can start stencil work. I don't risk doing that - I wait until the next day.
(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/EmbryonGD/Embryon%20GD%20560_resize.jpg)
(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/EmbryonGD/Embryon%20GD%20561_resize.jpg)
(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/EmbryonGD/Embryon%20GD%20563_resize.jpg)
OK - So look away if you don't want to see a disaster in the making. I tried a test on the blue section of the headbox. I was not too concerned, and then the next day, I tried to align the black stencil, and no matter what I did, it was never going to line up as the "artist" drew the artwork with NO overlap at all. Making matters worse, the size was incorrect. This stencil is going to need work as it is also drawn incorrectly. So after spending time with tracing paper and doing a test run without paint, I had to modify the black stencil in several areas - denoted in texta below !
(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/EmbryonGD/Embryon%20GD%20531_resize.jpg)
Lets apply the black stencil. Whoops - it does not stick !
(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/EmbryonGD/Ebryon%20GD%20005_resize.jpg)
Lets just keep going. Spend more time masking up the continual "tears" (and tears by this stage). Problems lining up..

After hitting the panic button several times, and reading other such horror stories, I felt a little bit better. I emailed Jeff "Pinball Pimp" in the USA, and he was happy to make a set for me, as long as I could scan the artwork. Lucky for me, my personal Embryon is not yet sanded, so I scanned all the artwork, and sent the scans to Jeff. He took a while, but he sent me the stencils, and I was eager to try out his stencils. Originally, I was not happy with the stencils, and through trial and error, I worked out how to use the stencils with my method of painting. These stencils are designed more for Enamels and rattle cans. The thinners of Acrylic Lacquers eat away at the stencil if you don't apply thin coats. So rather than 2-3 coats, you have to move faster so that the paint has no time to bite into the stencil material. By the end of the painting process, it was working out perfectly for me.
Here we go with the blue on the front of the cabinet ;
(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/EmbryonGD/Embryon%20GD%20502_resize.jpg)
Good start !
(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/EmbryonGD/Embryon%20GD%20519_resize.jpg)
Now we start the sides ;

Here is the black lining up perfectly.
(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/EmbryonGD/Embryon%20GD%20624_resize.jpg)
You can already tell that Jeff's stencils are hugely superior to the rubbish I was using before ;

(http://australianpinballrestorations.com.au/pictures/Restorations/EmbryonGD/Embryon%20GD%20632_resize.jpg)
Now I added the new sideraisl from the other Jeff (railways), and original legs from PBR ;

Embryon is a rare title, and unfortunately I was stuck with this one supplier. I tried to make it work, but the end product would have looked worse if I didn't approach Jeff.

There are a couple more titles that will be restored using machines I have here.

Yep. But there was a steely resolve to have it done properly. Countless hours, but well worth it in the end.

Looks gorgeous Nino. The finished cabinet is well worth the effort you’ve put in.
-
Is it just me that cares more about how well a machine looks, rather than how it plays? Not saying the play is not a factor, but it's a second priority to me.
This cabinet looks stunning.

This cabinet looks stunning.
The artwork on Ems and early SS machines, is that golden era of both artwork and gameplay. My personal collection is mostly games I remember as a child, so I have that connection. A game has to look attractive to be attractive. Sometimes, less is more. Pro Football is VERY basic artwork, but it draws you to the game as you identify it as being a sport themed game. Ro Go is a an average game bordering on mundane. But the artwork is iconic. I own this game and Viking. I don't care how they play, I LOVE the look.
Embryon is one of those games that has stunning artwork and is a fantastic player. Rare and collectible. That's why I have one myself.
-
looks magic. I like your little coded message about a twisted mess %.%

That cabinet came out AWESOME! Great job! I love seeing my stencil artwork on the actual machine!

Very happy with the outcome - Thanks for the kind words. This Embryon is for a Collector, but I will be repainting my personal Embryon using your stencils. I have a couple more games to start using your stencils and I'll be ordering more very soon. Again - Thanks for your assistance Jeff.

Now that the painting process is over, I'm ready to electroplate the smaller cabinet parts that I won't be taking to the platers (as they don't do Zinc - and they tend to lose small parts). There are parts that just arrived back from the platers (Nickel) and they look AWESOME. But no photos yet - as "my" plating was finished a week ago. I will expand on my "Backyard Plating" thread soon - as there's a few things I've improved on. Note in these photos, there are parts from a number of games - Not just Embryon.
So we start with the Door. Typical - Coke poured down the coin chute etc etc ..

I have documented it once before on another thread, but I want to do another guide on home plating as I've modified the technique slightly to achieve the results to a standard I'm happy with. I've previously used a 4 Litre bath, and I need to upgrade to a 20 Litre bath. With this upgrade I will need to replace the DC power supply.

Looking good Nino, nice and shiny just like new.

Hi Nino,
Awesome as usual. Do you tumble before you plate or do you go directly to the plating ?
-
Hi Nino,
Awesome as usual. Do you tumble before you plate or do you go directly to the plating ?
The parts are cleaned under the tap first, then they go in the Ultrasonic Cleaner for 2 cycles. Then soaked in a Simple Green solution. Dried with the air compressor. From there, they are soaked in an anti rust solution. Next they are soaked in a pickle bath (Hydrchloric Acid) to remove any old plating. If needed, I use a wire brush or wire wheel to completely clean everything. It is then soaked in a parts wash solution to prep for the plating process. Finally, when ready to place in the bath, the parts are left in a distilled (or rainwater) bucket. Then the plating starts. When that is done, they are removed from the bath and left in another rainwater bucket for 10 minutes, Then hung out. Four hours later, they go straight into the tumbler with fine media for 2-4 hours.
sounds like a lot of work, but if you are doing lots of parts, and you want everything to look new - it is mandatory.
-
Now I have some time up my sleeve, I'm updating some project's status. This particular restoration was ceased due to continual ongoing issues with myself and the Customer. It was picked up a long time ago and hopefully, someone was able to complete the machine. I will be restoring my personal machine shortly, so there will be a current Embryon Resto - my own game !!

Yay your own machines finally . Sadly our games come last

Welcome to thew Forum ! You should start your own thread as each resto has its own thread. This particular resto will not be updated as the machine moved on as per the thread.
I will be starting my own personal Embryon soon, it its own thread as well !
