Mars God of War project help needed
« on: December 14, 2014, 11:25:01 AM »
I have taken on another project.
Machine is quite rough and dirty.

Help needed orange cap replacement I have read that a 10000uf 25v will be a good replacement.
Also power supply is reading 15v at the 8v test point.

Is it ok to clean parts with isopropyl alcohol

We've put from 10K to 15K caps @ 16V or higher with no issues. Not too
much bigger capacity though or the inrush current potentially becomes a
problem for the fuse and bridge rectifier.

Voltage doesn't matter once you are over 16VDC as the cap won't charge
over that value unless your line voltage goes through the roof!

The RTBB computer grade capacitor is what I use and is mandatory for SYS 80 games.

The +8V DC Test point is the "offset voltage" for the 5V AC from the transformer. It is unusual to see it at 15VDC. Sounds like either R10 is open or the 8.2 V Zener is dead. There's a heap of info on this circuit, and the recommended updates here ;

http://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Gottlieb_System_80#Recommended_Updates_and_Repairs_for_the_System_80.2F80A_Power_Supply_Board

Of particular note is the update for R10, which allows for a 1 Watt Zener CR7 (more commonly found).

PLEASE ensure you update the power supply and ground mods for your game.

Swapped r10 for 680 ohm resistor, replaced Zener diode. Replaced 5v led, all voyages now good thanks
Order placed with Greg . Will do cap when it arrives

New 12000 cap installed.

Next the sound and speech board is reading 7volts at the 12v input and 3v at the 5v input. These have a separate power supply in the bottom cabinet. Any help?

I may need to pull out the power supply to check it out. My tech skills are limited.

+5V does not come from the Sound Board power supply. That is derived from the power supply pin 5 - that goes to pin 5 on the sound speech board.

+12V is from the sound / speech power supply. If all the other voltages are present on the speech / sound board, then I suspect the +12V regulator (MC7812CK on the speech sound power supply) is faulty.

But given the +5V is dragged low, I would disconnect the speech / sound board and test ALL the voltages at A6/J1. This would rule out the speech / sound power supply.
