BoP slap and tickle
« on: August 25, 2013, 04:19:09 PM »
Hi guys,

Well I've had this machine a couple of months now and thoroughly enjoy it. Previous to me buying it, its had new Next Gen decals applied, boards have all been rebuilt, new face plates on the head assembly and a couple of other things. Overall it's was in decent shape already but I wanted to make it better plus I just like pulling it apart to see how it works.

Unfortunately I didn't take many before shots but in this area the blue posts were looking there age, the targets were badly scratched with built up dirt and the stainless steel lane guilds were more black than silver. So new posts, new targets and the guild were removed and cleaned with scotch bright red then green and white to finish.

The ramps have also been replaced and all metal parts and switches cleaned up.

Before shot close up rust

The same end After

Some of you may have seen the metal ramps I chromed in another thread but they really help make the game fresh again so here they are again

Before

After

I have also recently had some issues with the head assembly so while I've been trying to get to the bottom of the issues I've also been cleaning as I go.

All cleaned up

Hopefully ill be able to have everything back together by next weekend. I just have to order a few rubber grommets which were badly perished under the coils in the head assembly and every thing can go back in. Hopefully the problem with the head assembly will be sorted with all of the muck cleaned off the switches and assembly. All of the  switches and coils have been re soldered so no chance of dry or cracked solder joint issues.

Well BoPs all back together and playable again. Actually it's been worth the effort as its really improved the game play.

Below are a few before and afters. I rebuilt the bop bumpers but just to give you an idea of how much grime builds up over the years hears a coil sleeve compared to a new one from the bumpers.

Here's the old and new bumper body's before install

I polished all the metal parts and post on the game.

Old Bop bumpers and posts

New pop bumpers and posts

All the stainless steel guilds have been polished up and re grained as best I could to. It really makes a difference when you see them with the new posts and targets.

The ramps and shuttle mod are new to.

I still need to swap the brides helmet over for the new one I have and there's a couple of other things ill probably touch up as well but I'm pretty happy with it at the moment.  Having said that, I'd be all over an new play-field and plastics should they happen to be repo'ed anytime soon as I really like this game and can't see it moving from my collection any time soon.

Nice work, glad I am not the only one with black fingers for Fathers' s Day. That metal polishing sure puts new life to an old machine. You are right about the improvement in gameplay, all those new parts, rubbers and lots of polish breathe new life into these mechanical beauties.

Looks gods, how'd you go with the ramp decals you were looking for? Did you reuse or replace?

Very nice work Adam.  ^^^

Rebuilding the Pop Bumpers with new parts makes the game play much better - and it looks much better. There is a fair amount of time involved in the process, but it is worth the effort.
