Title: NEW PIN - photos n updates !
Post by: Caveoftreasures on May 04, 2010, 11:14:54 PM
My 40th birthday is on Friday, May 7.

Instead of spending money on a party, I put the $ to a new pinball. I bought the machine unshopped from Mark.

The machine is a 1997 Sega  The Lost World - Jurassic Park. This is the last of the Sega Concaves i needed to complete the set.
JP Lost World, Viper Night Drivin, Star Wars Trilogy, X-Files, Strarship Troopers, Spacejam.

A huge thankyou to Mark for offering the worlds best service as usual. This is my 3rd machine from Mark now, and i plan a whack more for the future.
* A big thanks to Mark and staff, espescially for letting me do the layby, which is why Marks business stands out from the rest. What a top bloke for being patient. Money was a little slow since our new son arrived 3 months ago. This is the best birthday present i could ever have and it has made my 40th Birthday special - unwrapping a pin on the milestone of turning 40. Thanks heaps Mark.  ^^^ ^^^

I will add some photos when the machine arrives for the unveiling and shopping for my birthday.  ^^^

QUICK UPDATE.

Andrew (Beaky) and I picked up the new machine from Dutts Transport this afternoon and got her home an hour ago after work.
We have unloaded her off the trailer, and have just wiped 13 years of dust off the machine. Its always good cleaning places where no one has ever touched before. The machine is excellent. The playfield is beautiful. A lousy little clean and she will be like new.

All ramps are great, all plastics are excellent. Overall. a beauty for a 1997 model. It seems probably one owner with a service pack from factory stuck down the back.

We are changing over the german plug right now, checking a few small other things, and Andrew is setting up some service buttons we have spare, because for some reason, the machine came without a coin door or the set of buttons ?. Never mind, i have 30 brand new doors sitting here in boxes i bought off Mark when they were real cheap a few months back (remember the great coin door frenzy everyone had.lol)  Another toy and i am really stoked.  ^^^

I will take some photos soon, within the next few hours, just as we fire her up. Dying to play a game. My birthday present is looking good so far.
Farrrkk, I am dying for a cold bourban and coke. Thats in the next 5 mins. Stay tuned.  ^^^

I have stuck a cold bourban n coke down Andys throat and he purred like a kitten. First one didnt even touch the sides.
Thats the way to keep any pinball tech happy, feed them lots of alcohol. (and strippers on those special pinball tech courses held only for the guys)  *)*

Now, to take some photos. (of the pinball machine i meant)  ^^^

photos below.

and Red, theres no keys to the bar here, its every man for himself, and if u can drink it, its free ! i try to feed my guests as much alcohol as they desire, anyone welcome, anytime. I have even had to buy a moonshine still, cause beaky loves his bloody bourban !  ^^^

more photos below. machine has not been cleaned yet. playfield hasnt even had a wipe over. still dust everywhere. ramps need a good clean.

I have to put the brand new plastic egg halves on the playfield i got from bay area -sit over the little dinosaur dude). Was lucky to get those plastics cause they have been out of stock on them for 2 years and only just found a couple for me. We are yet to start her up, just rearranging the power supply and some weird wiring that someone has done to the power supply. Germans.   @.@

OK, update time.
(thanks for the kind words guys, good to see a few are having a good drink or dozen before playing the pinnies, i play better after a dozen jim beam n cokes )

Its midnight and we have just put down the tools, for tonight anyway.
We lost a few hours changing out the Dot Matrix display. I had to borrow one from one of my other sega concaves cause the one that came in the machine does not work. Swapping out the dot-matrix was a bit of a nightmare. Nowhere near as easy as doing a bally/williams or even a data east. The way they are screwed in on the Segas is a bit of a time consuming pain to say the least. So, i will have to see mark c about a replacement dot-matrix, cost etc ?

Next, is that i do not speak or read German (unless its Euro porn night   @.@) We need to change the roms to English. Andy will do that really easily since he is well versed in all that stuff.
Next issue, is that there appears to be a few switch issues, which usually are straight forward to clean or fix up.

Next stage, is that the ball snagger device on the playfield does not work. More testing/fault finding here. This can be a major concern cause there are no replacement parts for this issue on this pin , so i am hoping Andy and i can determine what that issue is.
Anyway, we will clean the playfield, change out the bulbs, do the rubber kit, and make her look a treat tomorrow, thats the easy stuff.

Ohhh, the love of pinball.   @.@  I am going to bed, its nearly 1am. Snnnnnnrrrrrrrr. More updates tomorrow.

no need to swap the roms, the language is selected via the dipswitches on the mpu board (dont know why i couldnt find it in your manual, i checked in a manual from a game that uses the same mpu)
plus there is only one set of roms available from what i can see

I told u to drink more friggin bourban Andy. You always fix things better when u are half wasted.

See, alcohol and fixing pins is good. Fixing pins after only 1 or 2 jim beams results in "we ahh stucka mate, we a have a nuther go tomorraw huh".

more photos to come. soon.
Title: Re: NEW PIN ARRIVING !
Post by: beaky on May 07, 2010, 02:19:09 AM
I will check what rom versions you have in your pin tomorrow. the manual i am reading states that the dipswitches select country (i.e. germany, usa, sweden and so on) but pinball repair.com says that there are no dip switch settings for the language display and they are set via the rom on the display.  !@#
and the display says german cpu when we boot your lost world up.
your mpu does have dipswithes and from memory your other concaves have the dipswitches all set to off (as per usa settings) but this pin has some of the dipswitches on
anyway i have downloaded the latest rom versions and i will bring my uv erasor, laptop and eprom programer tomorow and we will sort it out

Here is a photo of Andy (Beaky) and his son Jayden fitting the new coindoor to the machine. I will take a photo of my fat head tomorrow and add it.

Alot of people dont know Andy is totally blind, thats why he wears the Roy Orbison sunglasses, nahh, he just didnt want some wanker with a camera flashing the friggin thing in his eyes whilst he is trying to work with wiring. His son Jayden, only asked 65 times in a ten minute period, dad, are we going home yet ?
I guess shgopping pins for litle kids is as boring as bat shit, but we had fun.

Recently, when Andy and I went to the chineese Barber for a haircut (we work together when he can put up with me) the chineese barber said to Andy, "Awwwwww Andy, wooo woook danger russs". must be the sunnys.  @.@ @.@ @.@ @.@ @.@  :D :D :D :D

i purchased this brand new factory sega topper 15 months ago when i knew i would be buying this pin to collect all the cool sega's. it was like $20 on ebay - bargain.
I purchased the dinosaur also recently off ebay for $10 thinking it would work a treat. Something to liven things up. I am going to add 2 x flashing eyes to the dinosaur and connect it with the pins flasher circuit. p.s- my wife put the dinosaur together cause i hate puzzles.

EB, i dont own it  YET ! lol,  but i have plans to purchase another 20 machines over the next 12 months. I am on a mission. To have the biggest n best DMD collection in Australia, and hell, why not, the world. I am working towards having every Sega ever made and most Data East n Williams. Mostly DMD anyways.

you should do your own container loads Brett
Title: Re: NEW PIN - photos n updates !
Post by: Caveoftreasures on May 07, 2010, 11:54:29 AM
EB, if u saw what comes in those containers (or should i say what doesnt come in them) u would agree why i havent gone that route for good reason.

too many parts are mising from container pins. the euro sellers are definately not trustworthy, and i believe they try n send all their junk to australia.

imagine a whole container full of nasty surprises, thats what i have seen friends get when they open the container and find machines galore robbed of many many parts. i am convinced, euro sellers pass off machines that shld be parted out, as machines ready to go. i would kill someone if my container turned up missing stuff here and there, and everywhere.lol

but, no pinball is perfect, not even a brand new one i guess.  !@#

UPDATE

Day 1.  The first 4 or 6 hrs was spent changing the power chord from German to Aussie 240 Volt. Andrew removed some hack repairs related to the power supply.
We added a brand new coin door replacing the non existant coin door and Service buttons were added. The dot matrix didnt work so we had to use a loan dot-matrix from another Sega.

Day 2.  All new roms added n updated. We fixed switch issues assosciated with the ball trough. We replaced missing fuses from under the playfield. We found a few blown transistors and a few blown I.C's on the main board. We will effect these repairs on the main board overnight. We tested the relay assosciated with the ball snagger motor and the coils assosciated with the ball snagger magnets and pick up coils. They all work thank god. The problem with the 97 version of the Lost World Jurassic Park is that no parts or motors are avail for this ball snagger which is a major part of the machinery on the playfield. I have included a video someone made below of this motor/ball snagger in action. At this stage, my ball snagger and motor assosciated stuff is all ok.

&feature=related

The next problem I have to deal with is the Large white Dinosaur Egg on the playfield. The egg was missing so i purchased one. Unfortunately, some of the hardware assosciated with the opening egg is missing. I should be able to replace these few small pieces. With Andys help we will have to fabricate a small bracket or 2 if Mark doesnt have one ?  Otherwise, the machine is coming along nicely. I didnt expect as many hassles, but thats the norm with buying a machine unshopped. No big deal, nothing stops us, it will come up a treat.
More updates to come. The light at the end of the tunnel is coming.

Day 3 Update

Today, we took the main CPU board out and Andy did a few hours of repairs on it. He replaced 2 x screwed transistors, and replaced an I.C. Fixed a few switches and replaced a diode or two from under the playfield and fix a few switchs/drop targets etc.

We then put the board back in the pin and tested it. Everything now works fine, so tonight, I can now strip the playfield, replace all blown globes and replace the full rubber kit. I have decided i will do the Treasure Cove polish treatment to the playfield on this machine. I will take a few photos etc after it is done.

In the end, Andrew (Beaky) ended up doing the following to get this pin up n running.
* replace coin door and all wiring, add service buttons.
* replace/rewire power supply, change power chord to Australian and say goodbye to German connections, remove hack power add ons.
* replace dot-matrix with a loaner because orig one was stuffed n dead
* replace and reprogramme ALL roms from German to latest English
* effect repairs on the main CPU board incl transistors and an IC.
* replace blown fuses, here and there, and everywhere
* adjust a few under playfield switches/drop target switches & replace a few diodes
* test all coils and all playfield switches again once all probs fixed.
* stuff around with the ball snagger device for 3 hours and finally get it working but to find the timing pulley belt was/is broken

Now its time to strip the playfield and i will shop the rest of the Pin.

* A HUGE THANKYOU TO ANDREW, WHO HAS TO BE THE WORLDS BEST BLOKE FOR SPENDING 20 HOURS ON THIS PINBALL MACHINE BRINGING IT BACK TO LIFE.
 ^^^    ^^^    ^^^    ^^^    ^^^    ^^^    ^^^    ^^^ ^^^    ^^^ ^^^    ^^^ ^^^    ^^^ ^^^    ^^^ ^^^    ^^^ ^^^    ^^^

* A HUGE "GET ROOTED" TO THE DODGY EURO PINBALL TECH WHO WAS AN IDIOT HACK NOB JOCKEY WHO CAUSED US ALL THE WORK.  &^& &^&

Now its time to strip the playfield to make her shine and flash well.  ^^^ Also, since i purchased the machine from Mark unshopped, its important to see here, just how much work there is in turning a container pin, into a working pin. We didnt expect this many problems, but we got there in the end, and nothing was ever going to stop us, since it was my birthday present to myself, after all.lol  ^^^

I spent tonight stripping the playfield down on the JP Lost World. I used the Treasure Cove Polishing kit.

As sum 1 said, its a bit over-rated. The spounges/various fittings are awesome, i am just not convinced of the quality of the polish these guys send out.   !@#
* I have used Mills Wax by hand prior and have found it works like magic. The use of a drill with the treasure cove polishing kit does take some of the hard work out of doing it by hand. I am of two minds about the polish that comes with the TC kit.

I think its just normal el-cheapo polish. It is very very thin and doesnt seem to work anywhere near as good as the mills-wax does.

In any event, the machine has turned out to be a full resto because it came loaded with euro faults and fix ups.No big deal.
Mechanically, after apx 12 hrs work, it is now fine, I just have to make her shine like new again.

I will load some photos of the stripped playfield, and the results of the polishing using the TC kit tomorrow.   ^^^ So far, it is coming up a treat.   ^^^

Anything out of Europe needs a full recondition  %.%

Shame you didn't get the same results with the TC kit as I did. I've used it on two machines, one with dull mylar and the other with without. I won't use anything else - and I used to swear by Novus 2 and canuba paste wax.

UPDATE

I spent a good 6 to 8 hours stripping the playfield. I replaced fifty blown bulbs, replaced several flashers and added a new rubber kit.
I used the treasure cove polishing kit. I still feel mills wax is pretty dam good. I did feel the consistency of the TC polish was a bit watery, although the one designed to bring mylar up to par was gritty and was pretty good. The spounges/lambs wool and various attachments that come with the super kit
( all 2, 3 and 4 inch sets) are great. The TC kit is excellent. From my point of view, polish is polish so the hardware is the real secret to success here.

I am now half way to putting all of the playfield back together. She is looking good so far.

I will add some photos tomorrow.

the metal flaps have been removed and are sitting in some rust converter.
drilling those rivets out is always a pain in the ars. the trick is to use a very sharp drill bit and apply no pressure, plus stop every few seconds and let the rivets cool so the heat does not melt the plastic.

Those ramps look brand new !
thanks strangeways.
I repainted the flaps, first i used etch primer then i painted them with engine enamel and baked them in the oven for an hour. this makes the paint really stick.

and of course i used my rivet press to re rivet the flaps on. the cheapest i can get the rivets for is 25c each, but if i buy them in Aus they are 50c each. when you compare the price of these rivets to a pop rivet its quite expensive.

I picked these ramps up tonight from Andy, and they look absolutely better than brand new.  ^^^ ^^^

The silver has come up like chrome, the black ramp flaps look amazing, and the flame polishing has made the ramps as clear as crystal.

If anyone in S.E Queensland (Brisy or Gold Coast) needs anything restored for a small amount of cash, Andrew is the man. There is nothing with a pinball machine Andrew cant make like brand new, or work like new again. Andy does all my restore work, mechanical, board repairs etc.

I must be the luckiest bloke in Australia when I met Andy thru the forum. Gotta love this hobby.
Its terrific being involved with all of the top blokes on the forum. A wealth of knowledge. !  ^^^ ^^^ ^^^ ^^^ ^^^

Well, finally, after being a bit slack for the last 3 weeks, Jurrasic Park- The lost World (Sega 1998) is fully back together and is playing perfectly.

The ramps look better than brand new after Beaky's flame polish job. The treasure Cove kit worked a treat. Beakys help as usual was great.

We got the ball snagger device which picks up balls from the playfield and drops them into the top of the truck working perfectly.

This is one fun pinball machine and an absolute load of fun to play. Very fast playfield.

Again, a huge thanks to Mark C for scourcing the machine for me, and its now fullfilled my dream of collecting all of the 97 and 98 model Sega Showcase pinballs that i reckon are an absolute blast.

I will add a video and some pictures over the weekend. The guys coming up from sydney and newcastle for the AA meet will get to play it, and all the others that i have waiting for my fellow pinhead enthusiasts. ! Should be great fun.
