Earthshaker Playfield Restoration...
« on: June 19, 2010, 03:27:00 PM »
Hey guys,

Just thought i'd start a new thread documenting an Earthshaker playfield restoration.

So far i've clocked two hours on the project, which has seen all wear and problem spots highlighted and logged - as well as a full playfield mylar removal and glue (good ol' Magic Erasers).

Overall, the playfield is in quite good condition, however the few areas of wear that do exist, are pretty bad. This project will be completed during my Terminator restoration, i'm just waiting on a screened decal set from the US which is holding things up a bit.

I will spend the next couple of days getting the playfield repaired, so i can clear it when i do the T2 playfield. I'll be sure to snap some pics of the process - but for now, heres what i have...

Playfield as recieved...

Detail overview...

Middle...

Top...

To be filled...

Will need a respray...

And this...

Top plys have split, will need to be repaired...

And the underside will need top be sanded back to a smooth finish...

Thats about it for now, once i can clear both Earthshaker and T2, i can start on the art refinishing process.

Thanks Matt,

Hopefully will turn out nicely. This playfield belongs to another member here. I wanted to refine my airbrushing/clear coating skills - and they didnt mind letting me brush up on their spare playfield. Once its finished, it will go back to its owner  !!! . Looks like a really cool game though  ^^^

Nug and I are the lucky members that are having this "experiment" carried out by Tim.

I picked up an ES with a dodgy playfield, and had this playfield left over from what was donated to me and Nug from Bumper for Coconut Island. I hadn't discussed the game with Nug when I won it, and he promptly decided he was having it! Lucky for us, Tim is keen to hone his skills so I suspect we're gonna see a sweet playfield soon!!   $#$

Yep, sitting in my garage Matt, you're welcome to come 'round and check it out. Has a couple of problems (bad bridge), we'll get it down to Nug's shortly and up and running. Nug's planning a meet soonish so we'll make it a point of having the ES running by then.

Ok - this thread was well OVERDUE for an update,

So today, it recieves just that  @@*

Weather was fantastic, and i really wanted to try the new clear i had recommended to me.

The results are fantastic, and the clear has nice high build properties resulting in a nice levelled out field to work on. These results shown are from the first stage of the restore, and straight off the gun. I will leave this field a week to really set up before blocking it back and starting on the artwork.

I moved the playfield out from the workshop and a little closer to the sky to get a nice uniform reflection...

Nothing more than different angles here...

And here...

Here...

Here again...

Again again...

Still more...

Icing on the cake...

And a quick video i snapped...

Looking forward to getting into the art, i think the playfield will turn out very nicely - and Nick should have a really nice playfield at the end of the process.
