You lucky lucky ducks.

I just feel lucky in the wonderful friends I have.....and of course these fantastic new in box Stern pinball machines.

Also, forgot to mention in previous message that I purchased my machine from Joe at Kids Just Wanna Have Fun Amusements and he's been great in all aspects of the sale. If it wasn't for Joe, I probably would have missed out on a Tron and whined about wanting one for another 2 years. hehe.

Cheers!
Adam.

Peter, good one!!!!! Christmas seems to come around faster as we get older. Not sure which is more exciting, unpacking or playing. Tron is a great keeper for any collection and will age well. Good choice.

Quick post....took around an hour to unbox Tron today. Started about 1:30. Have been out for dinner tonight, had games of Tron in between and now off to bed. Have an early start in the morning.

A big thanks to Joe from Kids Just Wanna Have Fun Amusements for this one. I didn't think I'd be able to secure the funds for a Tron Pro re-run in time, but called Joe at the last minute and was able to buy his last one. I think he went above and beyond the call of duty being on the other side of the country to me. Always happy to take my call and respond to any questions I had. Would also like to thank AMD for checking the machine over and organising delivery. This will be my second new in box machine this year (and all time) and wouldn't hesitate in buying another if I have the funds.

Here are some photos from today.

Cheers!
Adam.

Peter

I filmed everything like the last one and when it come time to launch the ball, nothing happened. Turned it off and on. Still nothing. Took the backglass off and checked fuses. Some of the lights weren't on. Re-seated all connectors. Turned everything back on. Still one fuse light not on, the coils. No 20V light on either. Changed the fuse and still no luck.

I ended up ringing Joe and he pointed to the coin door. It was closed. I then opened it and pressed the white coin door switch in and out a few times. It started registering on the DMD. SUCCESS!

Looks unreal, Pete! Love the artwork on Tron. I like it better than AC/DC cabinet I think. Still think I'm lucky to have both machines. Have to pinch myself!

As for the marks, nobody else would probably pick it up, but you notice it. My dad asked why they never put metal protectors on bottom of pinball cabinets for when they slide them in and out of utes to put on site.

Cheers!

Nice! Didn't notice Peter's LEDs before....I also didn't realise before I bought the machine, but Daft Punk are on a plastic in the game. Bit of a Daft Punk fan, so that was cool to me.

Also, people complained AC/DC Pro was fast and a drain monster....might be just me being crap, but the ball seems to fly around Tron and currently my game times are VERY short. Might be dropping into Ulladulla Funland in the Christmas hols, so will put some credits up on Tron there and see how it compares.

Might have to get some Cliffys and some ramp protectors". That ball drop will get a lot of action and the way the ball flies around, those ramps will need protecting.

Cursed Looks like one happy man,  ^^^

HAHA i am, Tron is my favorite machine so to get one NIB (my first) was awesome.

I may as well share with the group. Apologies to all that have seen these.

Sorry for having my ugly mug in most of these......the missus took all the photos and hardly any are without me in it! Also sorry for the bad lighting, was dark by the time we got to it. Sorry for the crappy photos, used an iPhone and finally sorry for the ridiculous smile on my face in most of these, I could not stop smiling. Still can't even now. :lol

You may have noticed that the side rails are chrome as is the lockdown bar. Not the LE side rails though as i dont like the big discs around the flipper buttons. I also got the LE apron fitted, i think it looks great!

Also got a set of playfield support brackets, don't like the pegs......

Putting the balls in.......Bling balls from Greg. Not the Stern ones!

Michael(Cursed) the photos are excellent...

Question - did u get $$ the chrome siderails n lockdown bar, the LE apron, the ramp protectors. under playfield metal slide rails all done and fitted by your Australian AMD agent or did they get that stuff fitted by Stern USA ?

Was it expensive..?  I am imagining those underplayfield slide rails are $100 a set or more > and the chrome stuff an extra few hundred plus the LE apron ?....plus plus, or was it just a package deal....?

No she (minx) does not like it when things take away attention from her. She is a Lab after all.  :lol

Michael which ramp protector is missing? Left hand ramp on left hand side? That's the one that requires us drilling a hole.

Peter

No i am lucky, the only one i dont have is the right ramp on the left hand side. My left ramp has both done and the screw is already there! Bonus!

Thanks mate,  the chrome siderails and lockdown bar, the LE apron, and under playfield metal slide rails were purchased and fitted by AMD. I actually wanted to fit the parts myself but they advised that the apron was not a straight swapover and that the lockdown bar had to have a new locking mech installed as the lockdown bar uses the lever type lock. (which im happy about as it is the same as my Bally/Williams machines now) so they were really uncomfortable with me doing it so i let them install it all.

Not as much as i thought it would be to be honest, Under playfield supports were $66, apron was $103 and the chrome set was a touch over $300. All the parts were requested by me and it was just a straight purchase of parts. Was not linked to the purchase of the machine.

The ramp protectors is a mystery? I have no idea why mine has them, and from what i can tell out of 4 of the 6 that came to Aus mine is the only one.

Same with the decals on the 3 bank drop mech in front of the spinning disc, mine has black and orange decals on it and i dont know why? None of the ones that came to Aus have them and i just had a thorough look on pinside and i could not see any other Trons with them........Weird, I am not complaining though, far from it.... %$%

Chrome work looks really great.

Fits this machine well.

Well done.  ^^^

Thanks for the comments guys. Really happy with my decision to get the chrome parts.

I didn't want to over do it so i am going to leave the legs and backbox hinges black as i think it looks better that way. I have seen some LE's and i think all chrome is too much.

It sure does, chrome should be an option when buiyng a new Stern.
I am a bit over the powdercoating.

Funnily enough when i asked to order the chrome i was advised that Stern may not send the parts as they don't like people making the machines look like a LE! Obviously they did send them but i thought it was interesting.

Hey Michael - NOTHING can wipe that smile off your face. Great to see that pinball can still invoke this kind of response - that's what it is all about !

Thanks mate, I still have one of your silver sets as well so i am going to try both and see what looks better. In saying that i am pretty confident that black will really suit it.

Plus i fully intend to add a few mods to it so hopefully it will look alot sweeter soon.  *%*

I will be buying the under playfield slide rails for my ACDC and X Men, and will self fit to Avengers as well. Just a cheap worthwhile option at only $66 a set...less than $200 for 3 machines...bargain...

I know John Borg (game designer of TRON) told me he was personally having a TRON made for him out of this small run cause he missed out last time and didnt get one for his personal collection...maybe they blinged this one up with different target art n ramp protectors etc, b nicked it from the production line cause they could.lol   Will have to ask Borgy if he ended up qwith his Tron 2 or did someone send it downunder when he wasnt watching.lol  %.%

The Trons look great...plenty of mods around for them, not that they really need it if u want to keep it stock as a rock...but a nice looking pinny for sure...

here is a tron le that had silver blades, looked cool as well.

The blue and orange lighting makes this a fantastic looking machine - notice the orange less under the left align and lane guide as well as the arcade machine adds a cool touch

Pete, U can leave playfield down, gently install mirror blades after playfield is secure and install with double sided tape on top edge only...get the best of both worlds, then easy to remove n lift playfield if required which is almost never anyway.

I'd love the ramp mod where you buy the ramps already fitted with the neon rope lights but there expensive plus the freight may kill the deal, the arcade mod was $250 but worth it. Alot of guys have drilled holes and fitted the neon rope lights themselves but I'm not the patient plus I'd probably crack the ramps knowing my luck lol. I've just about finished the LEDs and they look great.

Plan on installing all my Tron 'bits' over the weekend. Can't wait!

Wired up with resistors, mounted and ready to install!  *%*

Thought i would show underneath, I have screwed them in front and back as i wanted it secure. Especially the blue (this) one, you can make out the mylar disc i put on it as you will see where the ball has been hitting it when you take it off. I would suggest putting some mylar there to protect the ramp decal. I think it will wear over time otherwise. The yellow seemed fine no marks so i left it. Made use of the original holes.

Clu.....

I did not use the original holes as they were right at the back. I put the front wheel in line with them so when playing you wont see them, same with the blue can't see the holes while playing. I have seen some people have Clu doing a wheelie (using the original holes) but i thought the bikes looked WAY to close together doing that so i went the more normal way.

Cant wait to put it all together  $#$

Swinks black mirror blades look great, Silver looked good too but i found the black looked more 'understated' and 'refined' (excuse me while i stick my pinkie finger out)

Bikes, sorry the flash drained the light out a bit there.

Blue pop bumper skirts, i wanted to change the look as i found the white skirts too 'look at me'. Really happy with the shade of blue these turned out to be.

Blue cliffy posts and recognizer sticker.

When you buy the Flynn sign he also gives you a home of Space Paranoids plastic to replace the Flynn plastic.

Overhead lights off, trying to capture the colours.

Great shot with the mirror.

You can see some of the plastic protectors in this shot.

Close up of the bikes, you can also see the white rubbers in the disc area. I changed all the rubbers to white.

Black leg bolts and feet, also the blue start button.

Great shot of the flippers, LE apron and my custom cards.

Shot of Swinks lane protector.

Very happy with the outcome so far.

WOW

That looks awesome ! All the mods look great and just the simple "mod" of changing the rubbers to white improves the look. Well done with ALL the mods - They don't "dominate" the playfield - they fit in really well.
Title: Re: TRON has arrived in Sydney/Australia
Post by: Caveoftreasures on December 30, 2012, 01:48:41 PM
This may be the most modded TRON in the world ! (the only mod left is the EL Wire for the ramps ?) but it tends to dominate too much and take away the focus of all the other mods which look sensational !  IF you could hook up the EL Wire so it only comes on when the flashers come on, that would be the best compromise ! Best of both worlds that way......

Well done on a great job.  ^^^

They are Hallmark Christmas tree decorations believe it or not. They have lights in them and are very detailed. Its a very popular mod.

In saying that both of mine are playing up. Not happy!  ^.^ The yellow one has dimmed to the point it is almost out and the white one is flashing, least it is still bright i guess. Think it may be to do with my resistors as the guys in the US are using 5v and they seem fine?

I got to catch up with Pete and his son today (great guy) and i brought up a little secret i had been keeping to myself (as its not me  ^.^) .......Which of us has the famous Tron?

You may or may not have seen the video below.......

[ Invalid YouTube link ]

Mr George Gomez himself points to a Tron and says its going to Australia, I have paused the video and the last number looks like a four or a nine (its hard to see). That rules me out as mine is a zero and i know Adams ends in a one.

So Pete.......Is your Tron the famous one? And if not whos is?

How ofter do we look at photos or videos and joke and say "that one is mine" looks like one of us actually can.  %.%

I thought the left side of the machine looked a little sparse so i added another recognizer to the order and installed it on the ramp. It even lights up the upper flipper area as well, bonus!

Led's and maybe a blue DMD and i think i am done, well the ramp lights of course but not sure when they will be ready. Really happy with how it came out and loving playing it.

As a side note - I know why my damn bikes died.....I am an idiot, thats why! I can't believe i spent all that time making them and i made the stupid mistake of plugging them into the 12v and not the 5v on the plug end. Live and learn i guess.... ^.^ At least i have spares.  %.%

Well done Pete.

Well Brett where do I start! It's an awesome package as in artwork and sound and add in great movie grabs, the flow around the orbits is spot on I love the shot through the bumpers just like WH20 then into the top flipper which allows you to shoot another ramp or an even harder shot through Gem. The speed is about right for the PF layout not as fast as acdc but fast enough the spinning disk really shakes things up its very unpredictable at times. The games needs to be set up right and I think a shaker motor adds to the game making it more exciting. Rules are spot on and it's a hard game and as yet I haven't got to "portal" the wizard mode but I've had it lit but drained before making the arcade shot :( there's also "sea of simulation" a mini wizard mode. Multiballs are also fun with a coupe of different types which include "add a ball" with great jackpot  shots and so on. I've most likely missed a ton of stuff and to top it off I haven't played acdc for two weeks so that just shows how much I like this game.

Peter

BELOW IS WHAT A GUY SAID ON PINSIDE WHICH I THOUGHT WAS FUNNY:

12 reasons why Stern’s TRON: Legacy PRO pinball is the best Stern pinball in recent years.

12. It has a nice translite. (unlike World Poker Tour)
11.   It has two ramps, not just one. (unlike Avatar)
10.   It is not based on a TV Show which will soon be off the air. (Sopranos, CSI and 24)
9.   You can buy the PRO version and not feel like you are missing out. (AC DC)
8.   Its code is mostly complete. (unlike X-Men)
7.   The modes and multi-balls are actually fun. (unlike Transformers)
6.   It has a cool toy (the spinning disk) that actually enhances gameplay, not worsens it. (unlike the Rolling Stones and Mick on a stick).
5.   Ball times are not too long, like Spider-Man.
4.   Or too short, like Ironman.
3.   And the sub-wizard mode is attainable for intermediate players. (unlike Simpsons Pinball Party)
2. It has 3 flippers. Lord of the Rings only has 2. Everyone knows 3 is better than 2.

But the #1 reason is…
It is not Big Buck Hunter. This pinball has theme and styling in spades!

Sorry, I have been bitten by the TRON pinball bug. When I am not playing TRON, I am compelled to post in forums about how great it is. This post is tongue-in-cheek. I have some love left for other Stern creations. My other pinballs, however, are collecting dust and will be up for sale soon so I can buy more TRON mods.

Ahhh Pete........Who would'a thought you wouldn't play your AC/DC for 2 weeks due to another pinny...... %.%

Could not have said it better myself Pete.  ^^^

This game draws you in. Has got to be one of THE best sound and speach packages out there.

Hitting Quorra then nailing the right ramp is (while simple) VERY satisfying especially if you hit the ramp perfectly if flies around the ramp. Or even better hitting Quorra, then nailing Gem........... *)* *)*

Stern will soon be releasing another alternative translite - girlie one

Looks great...I like the 2nd one with the helmetted person in the middle that the guys got on their 2nd edition Trons more.(Gorgar n Cursed etc)

I heard Stern are doing another rerun of 100 more Trons cause the other rerun of 100 sold like hotcakes. Ironman is supposed to be getting redone as well and Avatar. Re-runs are a great idea for those who missed out originally and it means more new pinnys in peoples houses. Excellent.

Thanks for sharing that photo Swinksy(Jady). Great detective work as usual.  ^^^

Double agree, it is not an easy game that I play for huge long games (like my Indy Williams) and if it is not set right it drains like crazy.. Bit like BSD, very unforgiving of flippant play ;-) but for the same reason very satisfying when you do OK..

Also has some of the best mods around at the moment, I have the little tron arcade in already, shaker was already there and have ordered the Flynn sign and have the light wires ready to go in once my new right ramp arrives..

Great look and sounds as stated, but if you put LEDs in it in my opinion they have to be the ones with capacitors otherwise it gets a bad strobe effect and is rather distracting (for me anyway)..

I'm with you Brett, I like the 2nd version best (and im not just saying that). I do like the 3D just not how blurry it is, and i find that one a little cheesy to be honest. While i have no problem looking at girls (no really i don't) they were not the focus of the movie. Kevin, Sam and Clu were. In saying that i am a big fan of the movie so that would explain my motives i guess.

The fact i own the 2nd one has nothing to do with it..... #@# No really...... *)*

Group buy Pete? Would love to have each version and hang the ones not being used on the wall.......hmmm.

Great work getting to portal Pete.  #*#

Had to laugh (well, not really) I had a game where i actually had the first 5 lights solidly lit when i started Sea of Simulation, i think i got like 20 million bonus all up for having all 5 in a row lit, then just as the ball shot out of the eject i timed it wrong it bounced off my flipper went nice and slow right down the middle on my last ball!!  ^&^ Best position i had been in ever on SoS only to drain before it even begun.  :lol

I still think the original release with the 3D translite is the best.

I agree, though maybe I am just biased as it is the one I managed to get..  %.%

Booooo..... :lol Just kidding. You enjoying the game?

I own the movie in 3d so maybe the 3d background makes sense... lol..

Quote
You enjoying the game?

My wife certainly is, she is claiming ownership of it on facebook.. LOL

I like it but am finding it drains easily, ether bouncing straight into the outer side lanes or shooting straight down the middle. I am getting slowly better, I had the same problem with Bram Stokers Dracula at first and was getting terrible scores until I worked out the shots and then it was like a different game altogether.. Also still getting used to having the third flipper.. Been so busy changing LEDs playing with mods etc that I have only had maybe a dozen games so far, need to stop working eats into all my leisure time...

Will have more time over the weekend, will be my first weekend with it..

Having trouble getting the lit up recognizer toy too, emailed Kimball them but never received any response..

Also found this pop number mod which I am considering, not a fan of the tops we currently have on them with the hole for the globe... mod crazy this game,...

Yeah very hard to compare, Trons so mode based and BIB LE is about scoring and theme and acdc playing loud :-) I'm so happy I chose these two cause they tick every box for my tastes.

Ordered the pop bumper tops pictured above...

Also got the yellow light wire installed, will get the blue done this week, need to make an adapter run out of points to jack the mods in.. lol..  Not a big fan of having to use sticky tape to install the light wire but to install it like the LE ones I would have to drill holes and the cable ties don't look much better..

Played a lot more this weekend, actually gets pretty addictive, got my first sea of simulation too, but screwed up and drained almost right away..  @.@

My 5 year old son loves it, particularly the music..

Ahh sorry that is not my ramps, that is a picture from the people selling the pop bumpers and that is a Tron LE..

I didn't drill the ramps I used little bits of sticky tape under the ramp lip to stick the light wires on, will put pictures up in the next few days... Mine are blue and yellow wires, one on each ramp, they don't change colour..

Using clear tape looks a bit shitty before you turn the machine on, once on everything lights up and you don't see it, I could clean it up a little, was thinking of drilling but the cable ties don't look any better than clear tape, maybe worse??

These are the ramp lights I bought...

Yeah, as a game South Park isn't great, but I love the theme and the look of the machine and have a vision of it in my line-up. Gave it a good play at Christimas time at Ulladulla Funland and still want it. I think the scarcity of it drives the collector in me. Seemed to be lots of them around when I didn't have the money and now that I could afford one, there's none on ebay.

Looking forward to playing Tron again, but I think the sticking point is soldering a hole in the ramp to install the Cliffy protector.

I've been playing Tron, South Park and Demo Man at Ulladulla Funland today myself. They have a Transformers there also but it was out of order.
Never played Demo man before today and I thought it was a fun game with all the ramps. South Park I've played before but it didn't do much for me this time around either. I really enjoyed the Tron the most out of their available line up and probably had 10 games of it while there. The only issue with it was the left flipper was a little sticky at times but other than that it played ok.

Heya Adam,
wow, Transformers was out of order when I was there in January. Yeah, first time I'd played Demo Man and thought it would be really good when it's all working properly and shopped out. South Park isn't anything special game wise I don't think, but I must have it in my collection! #grailPin
It will be nice to own a machine a bit slower after being caned by Tron. Still loving Tron...and AC/DC.

Just wondering if someone can point me in the right direction for purchasing wire for the Tron light cycle mods and other pinball mods?

Cheers!
Adam.

Bit of an update of sorts....

Finally got around to swapping out my dead cycles and putting in the ones that work, looks so much better with the light. Also have pulled out my Tron arcade and I am going to send it back to the U.S. to be fixed as they kindly offered to fix the screen for me as it has a dead line through the middle of it.

Also hooked my 2 bikes, 2 recognizers and the flynn sign to my PIG. So i have the Flynn sign connected to the Flynn insert, the Recognizers connected to the recognizer insert, the Clu bike connected to the Clu insert and the Sam bike connected to the Lightcycle insert. I connected them to the 'tree' inserts so if any of them are flashing i have not completed the task and if they are solid i have completed those tasks. Looks great and adds to the lightshow, makes me want to get a toy for every 'tree' insert.  %.%

Still loving Tron as much as the day i got it.  ()

Yeah please do mate as i want to make a decision on getting the cliffy v3, Mantis or nothing.

I actually prefer the metal look with the cliffy than without it. But not if it still has hangups.

Looks like a fair bit more is taken off.....Hmmm. I want to get one but don't really want to waste my money if that lip raises again.

Looks like slow balls will go in no problem but i wonder if a 'bouncing' ball will go in if the lip raises? That was what happened on mine alot, it would hit the lip when it was bouncing off the rubbers and roll out down the Zen lane.

Thing is i know it took a good 100 or so games before i saw trouble on mine, hey Pete can you play it all weekend for me?  %.% %.%

P.S. I also notice you have not installed your plastic protectors Pete  %$%

Looking to finally LED my Tron, Wanted to ask what other pro owners used for flashers? Have my inserts and GI pretty much worked out. I will be using Cointaker LED's.

Did you change the small flashers under the disc? If so what did you use?

What about the rest of the flashers? mainly wanted to know did you colour match or use cool white? Any help would be appreciated guys.

For flashers I used the super bright 9 led flashers the white ones for the domes and under some plastics like around the disc and near the scoop there incredibly bright :-)  It took me ages to get the PF insert LEDs right as most tend to ghost by memory the cointaker ones are good and I also bought some from a guy in Germany which worked a treat.

Thanks Pete, Did you change the bulbs under the disc with the red caps?

Also have you tried the same flashers in any other colour? Unsure to colour match flashers or just go white?

I will be getting one of the OCD LED boards so ghosting wont be an issue, its expensive but it looks amazing and i save by getting regular LED's instead of premiums.

What are the chances next Vault Edition pinball will be a Tron???? Hmmmm
Title: Re: TRON has arrived in Sydney/Australia

I'd say very low.  Stern reran Tron last year, except they didn't use the term "Vault Edition" then (when Avengers was being run).  I think the only difference from the initial Tron release was the different translight.

Of interest is how quickly Stern turned on the run of Ironman.  I expect Stern has already planned the next Vault Edition, and have the parts for it.  But they probably hold off the build and only run them when a new model isn't selling as well as they expect.  It makes economic sense.  You wouldn't want a Vault Edition taking sales away from a new run.

...I'd say the health of the Pinball building industry is indicated by the number of Vault Editions!

Yep Tron is one of those games that is so simple in it's ruleset , yet so difficult to achieve . It keeps you coming back for more and more . As for a Vault Edition of it , I'm not so sure that Stern will do it . They've already done quite a few re-runs of this title .

Agree with this, very simple but SO hard. Bowen made it look way too easy.

Not sure if they will do a VE or not on this, very popular in the states and more Trons can only be a good thing!

One of the best games ever made from any era and any manufacturer.
Tron is pinball purity to me and ours will always stay with us, it's never leaving.
