ST TNG no power
« on: June 04, 2014, 12:09:18 PM »
Turned on my ST and dead as a door nail. No power at all.

Pulled the power plug, fuse on line filter ok. Opened the box, and found broken connection. I believe its a thermistor? Link

Looks different ???

Tried Jaycar and RS, could not find in stock, does anyone know a cheap option. Or what they may list it as

Can it be re-soldered?

Thanks

Try Element 14, the part should have markings and also should be able to be identified in the service manual which is pretty easily available.

The Jaycar ones are fine, make sure you change the fuse holder while you are at it, the original ones are crap.
You might have to file the hole out a little for the new fuse holder, but they look the same.

You have a blown Thermistor and a missing Varistor.

I'd have to refer to the schematics for the part number and rating of the Thermisor - but Jaycar have them at a good price.

The Varistor is the part specified below and it should be soldered directly across the load.

You really need to be very careful here, this is mains circuitry and it can be dangerous. The fuse should have blown before the Thermistor, so please check it !

Spot on Nino, the Varistor is missing completely ! there is a small wire remaining on one of the lugs where it was cut and never replaced. Gee whizz

Opened IJ and half a correct looking picture. ^^^

Manual lists 2 different Varistors pointing at the same component, a Metox 10A and 275V 15J.
Jaycar show 275v but not 15J, lowest is 60J? safer to go which direction?

Thermistor 8A 5R25 from manual, no exact match that I can see. All the different specs making my eyes crossed *!@

IS that EMI filter toasted as well or is it just a shadow?

I reckon / hope it's just a shadow... Looks better by the naked eye.
BTW fuse did not blow

Quick update,
Added a varistor (ie: there was not one there to start with) and replaced the thermistor from parts at Jaycar.

Machine start up for a min or two, then smoke from the line filter assembly. Power off and un plugged.

New thermistor burnt to ash!

At a lose, pulled the line filter assembly from IJ and took the risk. Success. It must be the line filter.

Will order a new line filter and thermistor this week.

i have seen a lot of machines with missing varistors, some left the factory like that, some were just removed because they were set up for 110v and then converted to 240v so the varistor for 110v was just cut out

EMI filter is toast. Replace it !

Jaycar have a cheap plastic version, but I use these - https://www.rockby.com.au/SearchresSql_12.cfm?select=14&subcode=7

the 10 Amp version is the correct one. If Mike (Homepin) releases them as spares, then they will also fit the need !
