Title: Sticker, Translite or screen print
Post by: Top Card on August 30, 2016, 10:07:00 PM
I have a Stern Pinball (EM) that I am repairing for a friend and I would like some advice on how to proceed with the backglass resto. As you can see from the attached picture (P1014828), there is a fair bit of flaking on the yellow cab, the fourth player score surrounds as well as a number of other places. From reading other posts I feel I could have a go at the touch ups if that was the only problem but comparing the two pictures (my backglass and an image from ipdb) you can see how much my red colour has faded (the left building, the awnings, numbering and lettering).

So, given everyone else's experience I would like to know what people would suggest is the best way to restore / replace the backglass image. My plan was to photograph the image, restore it with photoshop or similar and then get two stickers printed. One of the translucent image and another behind it to block the other back box light. Or should I get a translite made ? Has anyone tried screen printing a backglass or I have even heard that it is possible to print directly on glass.

Thanks in advance and looking forward to peoples responses,
Regards,
Dan

I'm not sure that the backglass is that bad. It is not completely faded, you would see gradients of fade across colours (like the building on the left). The fade (if it is fade) is completely uniform. I think the backglass was originally like this. The white areas around the score reels can be masked and painted. The "Stern" and "pinball" can be cut out and repainted. P "Player 1" etc - same deal. The front of the taxi looks like it has peeled off (hard to tell from pictures).

I would try to restore it - you could not make it any worse. There's a thread Mitch did on a Zaccaria "Universe" ;

That would provide you with a guide on undertaking the resto.

You could try contacting www.bgresto.com (http://www.bgresto.com) - they might have one in the pipeworks.

Definitely faded, according to this pic from IPDB ipdb below

http://www.ipdb.org/showpic.pl?id=4694&picno=15006

As Nino points out its still repairable though, i've done several backglasses lately that were either faded like this one or had considerable paint loss.

In addition to my Zac Universe thread Nino posted the link on, there is also a resto thread on a Gtb Outer Space b/g i did a few years ago, i'll post a link if i can find it!

EDIT; Here is the Outer Space b/g resto thread, link below..
