Annoying ads on AP
« on: April 28, 2014, 05:56:33 PM »
Hey guys I have noticed quite a few of these annoying ad posts on AP lately.
There has be at least three in as many weeks and probably more to come.

Any ideas on a way to prevent them from posting this s#@t on AP?

My suggestion would be to prevent members with less than 5 posts from adding links in posts.
The best thing would be for the post to go back to the edit screen when they hit "POST" if there is a link in the post, possibly with an error message.
At least that way most of them would give up if they can't put a link to their site in the post.

We use a spamfilter that just about every other forum uses. Unfortunately, when the spamfilter site goes down - even for an hour, ALL forums will have some spam. We can look at prohibiting posting etc.

The accounts that do get through are a small percentage. I'd say 1 in 100 actually get through. I regularly clean out the logs and it would not be unusual to see 200 accounts blocked as spam.

It's usually my morning job to review the new members that sign up - most I delete as obvious spam accounts, others remain a day or so and then do their spamming, so get deleted later.

No real way to stop it without adding more labour to the sign up process. Every now and then it gets very bad, and we change the sign up process to requiring us to approve the account.
