Title: Aussie Pinball V2.0
Post by: Creech on March 26, 2010, 09:40:52 PM
One and all,

We are currently in the midst of updating the forum to vBulletin. This will give all AP members greater flexibility in terms of usability and look and feel. We think this is an exciting time for AP and is the next logical progression for this forum to move onto bigger and better things after a great first 18 months using free forum software.

We may need to bring the site down while the upgrade happens but you will be notified in advance when this will happen. Please be patient while we make sure we do things properly, ensuring a painless transition for everybody.

Here's to AP V2.0!  #*#

Cheers

Creech

Kudos to Creech - without his work on the software side we'd not have this forum, hats off to the man!

This is the third or forth forum you have set up

I thought you had a nice set up here, curious about what features you will be able to add in vBulliein that you cannot add to this forum

Actually, it is the second forum. Inventforums was shut down as there was no control over the spammers that continually posted porn etc etc.. Do a quick search and you will find all the info there.

SMF is OK, but we want to add more features and benefits - so we are trying it out. If it meets our needs, we will go live with it.

I don't see any issue with the process of evaluation and improvement. Tony does a fantastic job with keeping this site up and running - to the best of my knowledge - there has been not one single outage.

I think you are making things up just for a sh*t stir!

This forum we run here is based on free software. As we have installed a non-standard theme, it's almost impossible to install any nice mods/features as they simply don't install over the top of a non-standard theme. Plus we don't get any support from SMF developers. Think of some of the things that are missing from this forum e.g. arcade, shout box, awards etc. and that's what we can do in vb.

I never said he was doing a poor job

I was of the opinion that he had tried the invent forums twice

While shout-boxes and arcade ad-ons are nice, they are not, IMHO, needed

Give it up mate, you're wrong. Inventforums happened once, not twice. Your other post said 2 or 3 times. I guess your next one will say I tried it 5 times.

Add-ons have been requested many times by many users and we simply can't do it with the software we currently use.

Creech - there was a thread you(?) started a few months ago, re bringing old topics out of archive?

I thought that was for the "old aussie pinball" forum? I hadn't heard of Inventforum before?

Maybe that's we are getting confused?
Title: Re: Aussie Pinball V2.0

OK, here we go...

There was never an old Aussie Pinball. The one and only forum we had was hosted on the Inventforums website and was known as Aussie Pinheads.

Hope that's clear now.

If you need to change the software, change the software.

Hope the transition goes really smoothly!

Hi folks, it seems this upgrade will not be happening after all. After many hours of investigation and practice conversion runs, there are just too many data conversion issues which cannot be overcome. vBulletin have assigned many of our issues to their developers and I indicated to them that we cannot go live until these are resolved. Due to the uncertainty surrounding when they would be fixed, I have asked for a refund and they have obliged. Sorry folks! I am so dissapointed - spending so much time on this to have it result in nothing.

We are now investigating other upgrade options so stay tuned!

I wouldn't say its resulted in nothing.  If the upgrade had been rushed through and it all went pear shaped...that would be worse!

The SMF 2.0 (only RC) but once released has some good management features and hopefully will meet the needs..

That's a bitch - you would think these guys would know how to talk to a competing product?

Oh well - here's to aussie pinball v2.01RC1?  ^^^

Shame about all your lost time on the new version Creech but i wouldnt worry to much i think AP is perfect the way it is any other extras the new program had would only take away from the pure pinball of AP with crappy look at me Gifts etc

Very true, Daniel. AP has always been about the members and content, not about how many kisses you can give to your bum chum  %.%

Tony was very thorough with his research and testing, and we wanted to ensure that the entire content could be migrated, including post count  @@^ and avatars. We have had some great feedback, and it seems many VB sites are moving across to the new version of SMF - so we are in a good position to upgrade.

It is a very good outcome, and will enable us to move to a fully supported platform.

Thank you for looking into it anyway

I used to be a member of a forum (vBulliein) where the Admin did not bother with upgrades
After a few years he found he had to (The server was upgraded and it was incompatable with the older version)

The short story was, it was a disaster, Attachments lost, avatars lost, the posts were OK, but nearly everything else was lost or corupted

And that's what would have happened here. I'm glad I just found out before we actually went ahead with it.

if it aint broke, dont fix it.  ^^^

The current style of Aussie Pinball is straight forward and it works real well, in my opinion.

I have looked at Aussie Arcade recently, and i find the format to be a bit busy and lots of stuff everywhere, a bit messy.
Dont get me wrong, a fine site with good info, but i like the simple straight forward layout of Aussie Pinball.

Creech, what was the upgrade going to do for our current site ?  what benefit or changes were we likely to have seen or experienced ?
was it a major benefit or change ?

At least you know the majority of us, as i am sure, are very happy with Aussie Pinball the way it is now.  ^^^
Great job I say.  ^^^ ^^^ ^^^ ^^^

The benefits were mainly "under the covers". Better security against hackers, spam users plus features some of the members wanted like shoutbox, arcade games, award systems etc. This can all be done via SMF 2.0 anyway which is a free product.
