I seem to have a few restores going on consequetively, but i like that. As i get tired of working on one, i move to another. If i get stuck with one problem on one, i move to another rather than sitting down wondering where to go next.
Ive had this machine for a few months now. i bought it unsighted. I knew though that several collectors had already gone to view this machine but had walked away from it as it needed too much work to get going.
This title is a CLASSIC Gtb wedgehead - meant to be one of the best made.
To be completely honest, i took one look at this machine, groaned and also put it into the "too hard basket".
heres what i got;
cabinet graphics are very worn and tired
(http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/7369/bankaballrestore1zk5.jpg)
Front door is rusted and needs some serious work
(http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/6681/bankaballrestorema9.jpg)
The PF is in pretty good shape. It has plenty of grime embedded in it, but just above the girl is a test area of a quick clean - she'll come up good but will also need some touch up and a clear coat afterwards
(http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/9447/bankaballrestore3oz5.jpg)
Inside the cabinet is where i REALLY groaned. previous owner had taken off the Q relay coil and also the leaf switches. Without this the game will not work. But closer examination reveals that the wires from the leaf switches are missing also. I thought this would be a much bigger headache than i thought, but then i got thinking. Q relay is really an open or closed switch that determines game start and game finish. Without the wires and contacts its really a permanantly closed switch, which would allow a game to commence. So i reattach the power to the coil and also slot in a new SERIES coil as this was missing. PBR sell all these coils and this is where is sourced it from. As you can see from the pic below, coil is attached and SERIES coil in place
(http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/954/bankaballrestore2td4.jpg)
Now i knew when i bought this machine that the BG animation had been removed, but it was all still there.
This is what greeted me;
All leaf switches are loose and the ball drop down arms are missing. I found those inside the cabinet in a box..
.... here its is.... WARNING... This pic aint pretty!
Ho Hum - how the hell does all this go together?
This is a 1965 GTB and so NO MANUALS WERE EVER MADE! Im completely on my own here ( now you know why ive put this off for a while!)
The balls drop down in the BG at the top as you go round the PF hitting appropriate targets. BG has a little fade, but other than that is in good nick
(http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/4049/bankaballrestore4en2.jpg).
Now the first thing i ever do with a restore is get the game working. Then i can pull it apart, restore it and any subsequent faults in know are of my making and i can retrace my steps to erradicate them. All coils MUST be in place as missing ones on an EM lead to further problems as the power is daisy chained. I need to know everything is working before i can do anything.
With the coils in, game starts, but i have a locked on stepper coil. A quick check with an anologue meter reveals that the 1 point switch is reading closed, a close examination shows that the leaf switches have been bent out of whack and are touching. I seperate them, but this does not get rid of the fault. So now im scratching my head - maybe a shorted wire??
The game did come with a schematic and looking at this i see there are 4 X 1 point switches not 2.
For the life of me i could not find them until a full day later - right at the top of the PF is a small rubber before the rollover switches - 1 on either side and yes - they are touching!
Ok, so now we have a working PF - a deep breath and i haul out whats in the box of bits - all balls are there, but most are broken, ill need to make new armatures for them and some serious glueing.
I swing the animation mechanism down and try to work out how it all goes together. Actually, its not that hard to work out and whats not broken i put into place
(http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/1992/bankaballrestore6zq4.jpg).
The ball armatures drop down as its associated coil is energised from the target on the PF. Armature comes down and makes contact with the leaf switches, this then is registered in the cabinet through the 1-7 relays or 9-15. Once these are made ( either one will do) the 8 ball relay engages and SPECIAL is lit.
Now with the animation unit swung back up, the armatures ive put back in place SHOULD drop down.
SUCCESS!!!!!
Every single screw that holds the leaf switches down is missing so it wont register in the 9-15 bank. I need to get all these back in place, but all in all, i have a potentially working machine.
So where am i going with this one?
PF will be restored
Door, legs, lockdown etc will be cleaned and then chromed or zinc plated
Header and cabinet will get full respray using my computer cut templates.
BG animation unit will be rebuilt, armatures will be CNC routed and balls attached.
Pastics?? well some are cracked, so ill look into some repro ones, but what i have is still useable.
Watch for more updates - but this machine will shine when finished and will take pride of place in the collection
-
got to agree with you that is crazy nice work on it tho #*# well so far
-
Ambitious project my friend - but I expect nothing less than a NIB (Nearly In Box) from you !!
This will test all your repair and restoration skills - Best of luck and keep the updates coming !
-
Amazing. Can't wait to see this up and running. She'll be right mate ^^^
-
When i first saw it, i too thought it was a very ambitious project. i really was not looking forward to tackling it. But as always, take one step at a time and you start to make progress. Mechanically its in better shape than the 1951 Wms HARVEY i fixed up. The BG animation is self evident once you take a deep breath and dive in.
I forgot to add - this game has metal flipper buttons - wait till you see those shine in a newly painted cabinet!
-
how much did youget it for anyway
-
wow thats a big project, more than i would like to do.
good luck, so far so good.
cheers ian
-
Best of luck Gav with this one - I can't begin to imagine how good it is going to feel for you the day she shines and works like new!
So I guess that means that the Spiderman restore is way down the list now??
-
LOL!!! Actually SPIDERMAN is another ill be doing at the same time - this needs to be up and running ASAP, i have a frustrated 7 yr old waiting.
Spiderman has ALL grounding straps removed and as such the door etc are all live..
... But this will be another thread
-
I will be returning to this thread eagerly awaiting its updates ! *%*
On each restore you guys seem to go one step further into the realm of 'nothing can't be repaired.'
Great work Gav, awesome to see someone else's skills at work !
Thanks for posting and sharing.

Gav - Did your son "find" Spidey ?
-
Yes - he found Spidey, had it under covers, but a tiny part of the lettering was showing. He recognised it straight away.
Space Station irritates him as its a harder machine, so ive promised to get Spidey up and running for him. So the plan is to get it to a working position and do a restore later..
-
mmmmnnnnn. maybe you'll get sick of it once its restored and sell it to me.....
the good thing about this is that it'll be close by....
:lol
-
so how much did it cost you
-
LOL! Cool spot.
the only, answer to that question is a bit more than i would have liked to haved paid and less than than i did.

That will stop any thief from stealing it from you (or those sneaky kids from touching anything before you have finished :lol)

I can't understand why the ground straps would be removed... I guess if there is no "ground", then the machine does not need the mandatory System80 Ground Mods ? <.>
-
My thinking is the same Nino, with no ground, then there can be no ground issues right?
The plug it came with was a European schutco (?) style that had no ground pin.
You can see the staple marks where grounding strap was removed.
If the game EVER worked with this set up then it must have only come to life if the player had bare feet and one leg pushed against the door whilst wondering if pinball was meant to be painful...

Ok, im at a point where im happy that i can get a working game from this.
So its time to start dismantling the machine.
I had this game completely dismantled in 2hrs. Great thing about EM games is that the whole bottom panel can be lifted out as can the scoring mechanism panel in the backbox. This makes working on them much easier as they can be put on a bench and worked on in comfort.
Once all the cabinet has been stripped, the original colours can be viewed where metal rails etc have been taken off.
The machine is meant to be a lovely turquoise colour - the blues, yellows and reds are very vibrant and much brighter than i thought they would be. Once these original colours are exposed, i can colour match with a Pantone colour chart.
The difference in colour can be seen here
(http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/3470/gtbbabassemble7uw0.jpg)
Cabinet and back box are put aside to be rubbed back later.
First i want to clean up the PF and see where the restoration needs to be. PF is filthy
(http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/1715/gtbbabpf4om0.jpg)
PF is completely stripped, all protruding leaf switches are unscrewed and allowed to hang underneath.
Grime on this game was pretty thick in places. First thing i do is get a few rags, some old towels that have been ripped into strips and some methylated spirits. A good wipeover gets all the heavy crap off.
Ball swirl is quite heavy also, so i attacked this with Nino's "magic Eraser" tip. Im not really a big fan of these unless im prepared to touch up the PF beforehand. On these older games the magic eraser can eat through the paint before you know it, if you feel any drag on the eraser, its because the paint is now being worn away.
I ALWAYS use these with some caution.
First i use the eraser with a some warm water and a drip of washing liquid - eats dirt and grease - just what i want.
Then i go over it again with the eraser and meths. The dirt was embedded into the cracking that had occurred. With the metho application, i move along the line of the cracks. Takes about 30 secs to lift the dirt
(http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/6812/gtbbabpf12xr0.jpg)
Ball swirl etc was heaviest in the centre of the PF. It looks like a square of Mylar had been removed from here, but the glue never was, so its baked on and dug deep. Ive got most of it out.
After an hours work, ive got a pretty good Playfield. There is some cracking and flaking to the paint on the right hand side. Extensive cracking through the centre.
This will have to all be restored and then protected with CC, but all in all, its not in bad shape.
I can get this PF to shine again. Im not going for the NIB look witht this. Im not repainting it, im restoring it. So much of the original paint is in good shape, that its largely a touch up job. Ill be leaving whole sections untouched.
It looks like beer or some sticky drink was spilt down the PF at some point. It settled under the apron and soaked in. This will need to be sanded back to smooth again. Its probably what lead to the cracking in the PF also.
But here it is.... cleaning almost complete ( i ran out of Magic E). Even at this early stage, it looks a million times better
(http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/9335/gtbbabpf9bj8.jpg)
-
Looking good mate - Yes you need to take care with ME on EMs.. #@#.. These games had a coat of lacquer, BUT, it will be VERY thin. That's why ME is LETHAL on these playfields unless care is taken..
I think this will look awesome !
-
Gav,
How could I have missed this post?
Seriously there is no reason why this game wont come up a treat - the playfield and backglass are a solid base to work from.
The only issue you may have is getting the backglass animation unit all back together.
New paint will be an excellent launch pad for this old girl coming back to life.
-
PF restoration is almost complete...there is another thread somewhere - LOL!!
But time to work on the cabinet which is pretty shabby..
...header has some issues.. mainly the veneer coming away at the top. I did contemplate inserting a piece here and then bogging etc, but figured it would take the same time and be easier to cut a new one... so off to Bunnings and buy a small sheet of ply... header is here complete with high scores from 1979..
I did this fix BEFORE i realised i should maybe document it, but all i did was place the ply over the top of the header and run a router round the edges... simple stuff!.....once this is done the old front can be pulled off..
Glue applied to header and new one installed and pinned down..
Still got some bogging up to do though..
Aaaaah Bank A Ball... is good to be back working on this machine.. all stencil files have been made and colours documented... just bloody hope i can remember how to put it all back together again!
-
Long time between updates on this one Gav. Looking sensational! Just looks like so much work on an EM and more so on this one. It will be a ripper. I would like to get an EM one day but would have no idea which one to look for. Looking forward to seeing more results on this excellent thread
-
WOW
Better you than me . . .
Super effort so far, it will be intriguing to see progress on what looks like a nightmare task to me.
I don't remember seeing a live Bank A Ball, but it will be a beatiful machine when you're finished.
The backbox animation alone will be stunning - 15 pool balls drop down progressively it seems?
Always liked billiard themed games (Snooker is my other game)
Keep the pics and reports coming . . .

Yes... is a long time... i got somewhat side tracked with so many other things.
Ive just read the posting and the bit "i wont be restoring this..."etc... what a bloody load of bollox!... Its the biggest job ive ever done... completely repainted the PF pretty much twice!
You can see why... other part of the thread is here....

Fixing the back of the cabinet which is all busted away at the bottom..
What i do is create a straight edge to run my router along ( bit of aluminium angle screwed to the back) and router out to the width of the timber strip im installing..
Steady run with a router and we have ourselves a nice square groove..
Timber piece cut to size, glued and bullet nailed in place..
all ready for a couple of days bogging and sanding....
-
Thought id document this just in case anyone decides to do a bank A Ball cabinet spray. Matching colours is always a tricky business and finding a suitable paint even trickier.
Main cabinet colour is somewhere between Pantone 345c and 346c.
Taubmans make a colour called "soft Green"- this matches Pantone 345c EXACTLY.
I went to Bunnings and bought 4ltr Soft Green and got the very friendly guy to give me a sample tub of blue tint.
Mix some of the blue to the Soft Green and you have the base colour for Bank A Ball... it is SPOT ON!
..Of course stencils are available..
Gav
-
Bloody hell Gav - Two days in a row on one machine %.%
-
.... Wrong old pal... had yesterday off due to large hangover
-
Interesting that you bought 4L for base colour Gav .
I have been getting away with primer and then 1L of base colour (1L gives me 2 coats .. just)
-

I know... ideally i wanted 2ltr to cover myself... therell be plenty left over which ill keep as stock. Most of the colours used are then used on other games also, so im sure it will come in handy one day
-
Sounds like you plan on painting plenty more cabs.
I have done 3 so far and swore I wouldn't do any more .. but am about to start on my 4th :D
-
....I dont mind it. Only part i dont particularly enjoy is bogging, sanding, rebog the bits you missed, sand... bog again... sand... once im spraying its happy days!
-
What type of pantone book do you use for colour matching i have found there are a few types? Also where would one buy a chart other than ebay?
-
I got mine given to me... is old.. 1999 version. They are though NOT cheap to buy!
-
they serem to be just the right thing for a quick colour match, very handy, but as you said very expensive ^.^
-
I used a water based enamel for the base colour... nice semi gloss finish and fast drying. Thin back slightly with water and away you go... reckon i used approx 1/2ltr for this... LOL- plenty of paint left!
Cabinet and header now complete with cobwebbing...
Close ups of webbing effect..
I used a spray gun for the webbing and acrylic lacquer as its fast drying... its VERY easy to do!!! Just take the pressure from the gun back to approx 10psi and the paint fails to atomise properly giving a stringy effect. Acrylic lacquer dries too fast and some went off in the air, which means that you have to overdo the effect and once completely dry a stiff brush removes whats not stuck to the cabinet properly
-
Looks great Gav ^^^ . I like that colour .
-
Surprised you went down the enamel path for the base coat. But it looks great anyway !
-
Surprised you went down the enamel path for the base coat. But it looks great anyway !
Enamel flows through the gun better and gives a smoother finish. Other than that, its just like an acrylic in drying time and the fact that it dries a little darker... this water based enamel.. not the stinky slow drying normal enamel.. also clean up is a breeze
-
Looking great Gavin, this one is a nice classic. She will look really nice when it's all said and done.
-
Stencilling complete..
This was a time consuming process as my vinyl cutter has lost its registration.... it cuts the correct shapes but they are not in the places they should be. I THOUGHT i had this issue sorted but its not.. result was i had to completely repaint the header and apply shapes by hand.
Need to put a protective top layer on, buts its been pissing with rain for 3 days now... so im waiting... and waiting...

+1, lookin pretty sweet, will be good to see the end result!!
-
Oh theres a ton of work already put into this machine a ton still to do..
I actually managed to get the protective top coat onto the cabinet today by banning my wife from putting the car into the garage so its out of the rain and spraying it. I use a mix of polyurathane... this is linseed based so will yellow over time just like the original coating, but its readily available, easy to use and will NOT react with any other paints. Mix i use to get an original finish is 80% gloss with 20% low sheen, thin back with turps and apply with a gun. I used a whole tin of 500ml Gloss in total. Coating is now touch dry so ive already put the newly polished parts back into the header.
Cabinet and header look VERY SWEET indeed!!!
-
Interesting choice of topcoat. That's one step of the process I did not do with my Jacks Open. I will follow your process for the next two GTB cabinets. Looking great BTW !
-
Gives a nice shiny but not too shiny shiny finish...
-
Very nice ^^^
-
Looking very sweet Gavin .... hopefully there's not an unwritten rule that says the older the game, the more the resto work!
-
Excellent looking result with the paint job Gav ^^^
-
And so the reasemble begins... so much rust! And so many parts have lost their finish, but it all gets treated and polished and then put back together. I worked out today that i took this game apart approx 4 years ago. The parts have been sitting in a large tool box for all that time... to be honest it all looked like a nightmare... but i had bagged all screws and labelled them.. "ball push up"... "PF rest".."PF lock bar" etc... all screws went through the tumbler a few years ago... quick buff up on the bench buffer and away we go... all looks very tidy, very clean and so far not one screw missing!
-
WHO SAYS YOU CANT POLISH A TURD???
PBR are out of stock on doors, coin plates & lockdowns.. i WAS going to buy new, but 2 days of sanding back, then sanding finer, then finer again.. then cutting, then polishing have come up trumps.
BEFORE..
AFTER..
LOl- excuse the finger marks!!
And after all that work, under all that crap i found this little gem which is so nice and seals the deal to keep as PBR only have American coin plates.. this predecimal number i like very much... was quite a suprise to find it.
-
That is cool, I guess sixpence and 10c are similar in size but it has been a while since I saw a sixpence?
-
Looking great ^^^
From memory feeding the 6d back then they were the same size as 5c, a shilling 10c
-
Yes... sixpence very small like a 5C coin... a shilling ( 5 pence) around the size of a 10C piece.... 2 shillings ( equivalent of 10 new pence) around the size of a 20C coin... the coin slot has been cut out to accomodate a larger coin, but its been done well so looks OK
-
Great work on the door and coin entrance plate Gav.
The door and coin entrance plate on my Thorobred are in the same shape yours were .
I was going to buy new but you have inspired me
-
VERY nice mate and lucky to have that coin plate !
-
Wow.... what a beautiful job. Cabinet looks just great mate. Great colour!
-
And today i finally got to the stage where i can say that i have FINISHED repainting the playfield!!!! #*# #*# #*# #*#
One last coat of CC to go on for a light rub back and then a FINAL coat of the KBS Diamond coat... this is harder than any 2 pac and cannot be damaged by any chemical or solvent... once its on... its on for good.
Some close up detail pics... oh boy this was a lot of work

Please dont let it rain over the weekend... the heavens allowing i can start to repopulate the PF next week with all the shiny goodies i have for it!!
-
Finally get to see the pink bits on this baby without your nightmare. Bloody beautiful Gav
-
Great work Gav, Playfield looks awesome ^^^ A big improvement from what you started with.
-
How nice is that playfield now . #.# #.#
Beautiful work Gav ^^^
-
Very nice work mate ^^^
-
Beautiful work Gavin .... colours in that PF are alive and vivid - great stuff!
-
really wonderful work Gav. I think you will grow to love Bank A Ball. Your playfield will look like a million dollars with the stuff on it and it's a great game to play. Well done, mate.
-
Finally got the KBS Diamond coat down today.... its been absolutely pissing down all week and therefore too humid to do this... but sun comes out and i pounce!
This stuff is very user friendly, will not react with any other paint... sprays real nice and is self levelling... and oh boy it looks like a million bucks!

Touch dry in 1 hr, but fully cured to super hard coating in 7 days
-
Fantastic job
-
Finally got to start the playfield assembly... oh its all so BLING BLING!!!!
I couldnt hold myself back and had to restore the apron too.. paint was missing along all the edges and rust had set in... i enjoyed doing this, hit the exact colour within minutes and some fine detail airbrushing gave great results...
All targets i cut stencils for and resprayed the bullseye.. then a clear coat to protect it... im one of these missing for some reason !@#
(http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/rr243/retropin/BABassembly5.jpg)
NOS metal flippers.. special thanks to Marco ^^^ ^^^ for these who sent them through ages back... finally got to put them on and i love em!
Nice overall view... all new plastics i made some 3 years back or so...
But im in trouble... heres under the apron... what the hell goes here and more importantly.. where the hell is it???? This is a Push up remember so no under apron solenoids to kick the ball

I originally had all new bumpers for this game, but i must have used the rod & rings on another machine as they have gone... so cant put my nice new bumpers on till after Easter when i can order from Greg @ RTBB.
Once again, i couldnt help myself and had to turn her on.. she reset OK and went into game mode but i have 2 locked on coils... the end is within sight now, i just need to make all new balls and armatures for the back box animation.
I have a cunning plan for this and of course will post my progress
