I am part of the committee to aid in this venture happening in Newcastle, so make these dates available and start planning a road trip. You could fly into Newcastle or Sydney and the drive to Caves Beach (in Lake Macquarie) is equal in time approx.
The event is organised by the Newcastle Pinball Association, which is comprised of private collectors/enthusiasts, and operators. Dates are confirmed for September the Sat 8th, and Sun 9th, for our first annual event.
Venue: the Caves Beachside Hotel, at Caves Beach.
Accommodation: is at the same location which is fresh, new and a beautiful location.
Date: Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September - so 7 1/2 weeks away.
Opening times: 10am to 4pm both days
Machine capacity: (300m2 of space) approx 60 machines with Bingo's, Em's, SS's, DMD's and a virtual to be there.
In the end this is the first event to be available for Aus in a while open to the public for a few years and the premises owner is supplying the venue for free including insurance so we need this to go off as he has a second function room of equal size available for next year if it goes off - SO PLEASE TRY AND MAKE IT TO SUPPORT THIS EVENT.
There will be no auction but for people wanting to submit a pin to show and possibly sell you are welcome though there will be a fee.
All door entries and selling fees will be donated to the Westpac Rescue Service and the local Children's Hospital.
We have limited space for commercial stalls, so as we get commitment from vendors, we will update the thread with more details.
I will keep updating this thread with more details as they come to hand. There will be an entry fee for the Saturday, and Sunday sessions (nominal, yet to be decided).
Pinball Fest 2012, it's on!
-
I have done a site layout which I will post once approved and looking like 4 bays of 10 machines possibly organised in era.
Here is a logo that I did which still yet to be approved so look out for advertising of the event.
Shirts will be available possibly with this design.
It looks like AMD will be there with a AC/DC and hopefully a X-Men LE,and then Norbet and Ken Shipley (Skybeaux) will be on hand keeping the machines going.
Exciting times #*# #*# #*# #*# #*# #*#
-
Sounds like a great weekend. Hope it goes well
-
for those considering keep in mind this is voting weekend for NSW so plan ahead and do a away vote before hand so you can enjoy the whole weekend. *%*
-
Congratulation to Swinksy and all those involved in getting this meet up n running. Great to see AMD involved as well. Should be great fun for all !
-
A huge big thanks for Timbo (El_Timbo) with his support of some graphics for a poster for the event.
Very much appreciated
The dates are final for the 8th and 9th of September and though the main committee is AA guys purely because of location I am encouraging a unity of both forums to get in there and enjoy. It is looking like Saturday night will be a closed session for dinner and games for forum members will confirm that soon.
The function layout is down to 2 options with 60 machines
left one is that classic look
right one is better for power supply at the venue and could be organised in bays of era.
should be good guys, don't be shy come and join us.
-
Good looking poster
-
Should be a hoot for all involved and for all those attending.
I hope everyone gets right into the spirit( and the spirits... *)* ) and has a huge week-end.
This will clash with week one of the footy finals for me, I might attend another event if the planets align.
-
You are a credit to the Hobby, Jady - Well done !
So refreshing to see a POSITIVE event being hosted promoting pinball. Well done ! I hope it is well attended.
-
After conversing with some of the guys in the committee I am pleased that this is a pinball community event with no focus to AA or AP - the Saturday will be open to all but details to come.
Thanks Nino, though many people make a team but it does feel good to aid in what could be a yearly event. Credit also to Timbo saving me with some graphic designs that look the goods.
So anyone that wants to contribute with a machine for the show to show off, put on free play and we are going to have a rarity section where some machines will be available to play for a small fee. e.g. PnP will be bringing a couple of Hankin's but they know they would last 2 x 12hrs on. please let me know as all are welcome.
Here is Timbo's design for a hoodie, things are snowballing - awesome
-
Wow looks like a top event good luck to all and hope its a massive event.
Peter

- Charities are - SIDS and Children's Hospital
- el-timbo's posters and shirts can be pre-ordered and keep in mind only a small run this year so place a order asap. A few will be listed on ebay more for advertising than anything else.
- AMD will be bringing a AC/DC and most probably a X-Men
so would be good if you can make it there, Retropin and Homepin will be there @@* awesome guys, thanks for the support and all the best with business.
-
I'm looking forward to it. I will have a display table showing most of the boards I make but won't have any for sale at the show (due space and weight constraints). If anyone wants a specific board let me know in advance and I will probably be able to squeeze one into the luggage to save you postage.
I also intend to have bumper stickers & my (infamous) "Space Invaders are Here" posters available with 50% of the proceeds to the charities chosen by the organisers and the other 50% to a charity of my choice (with the receipt posted here when I receive it).
This will be a chance to get one of these posters for the den or kids room at a bargain price and with no postage costs whilst helping charities - everyone wins <..>.
At this stage $15 each (even cheaper than before - they were originally $16.50 but I chucked the balance in my last container so the postage cost on these was nearly nothing :D).....

Thanks for kicking this off on AP Jady, you are a power-house of organisation. The event is coming along really well, considering we got the offer only a few weeks ago. The sponsor list is impressive, the machine line-up is excellent, and the public will be in for a treat. The Sat nite meet will be epic, and the team will be well and truly buggered after its done and dusted &^& %.% Look forward to see you guys there.
Greg
P.S Jady we may have canned the finger foods, there are 2-3 eateries at the venue though.
-
in the name of pinball
-
el_timbo has completed the poster - great work mate, thanks for your support ^^^
-
a big thanks to el_timbo for donating his time and efforts for doing all the awesome quality artwork (posters, flyers and clothing) for Pinfest
Beautiful work just like your machines. ^^^
-
a few little changes of machines (52 and have room for 59) at the show and am sure a few more getting closer to the event.
The AC/DC is pay for play as it is part of a comp (I think)
There are also a few machines for show and not play - due to rarity and would not last staying on for 8 - 9 hrs per day or parts for rpairs very very hard to get.

How many people from AP are going to this event ?.
It would be nice to know/have a list of people who u could meet n say hello to on the day. A great idea to meet some other great AP members.
I think its worth making the effort to travel to, even for QLD or VIC guys. THESE EVENTS DONT GET HELD OFTEN ! ^^^

just walk around and shake every persons hand in the place and introduce yourself is the best, otherwise, name tags not a bad idea, leaving out any forum name ofcourse since its a non forum meet (AA or AP).
-
I will have a pinfest shirt on so that will narrow it down. <..>
Or we can start a ugly mug thread %.%

I don't see a problem with that, free world. Everyone is wearing some logo of some business these days and it's pinball even better.
Catch ya there

Unfortunately I will definitely not be making this one.
All the best though, great to see someone taking a pinfest on!!

REALLY looking forward to this... ive dealt with Wade on a few occasions and know his off sider Dan Kramer very well... excellent stuff!
-
Great work Jady. Your dedication is outstanding. A true credit to the hobby ^^^
-
Here is a layout just to give people an idea - this is very close to final. Once I know who has been given what as a display table I will post that as well.
-
Did i read right..... BAR????
Just put my table next to that bit..LOL
-
Hey Cavey
Name tags I had to laugh If we had AP name tags the public would think we are F-----N weird :lol and run for the hills
I like the idea of shaking there hands and saying g day Howzat
-
I am doing my own Pinfest shirt - look out for either a sky blue one with white text or a dark grey with orange text like on my avatar.
Also anyone visiting Pinfest wanting coloured mirror blades give me a yell prior and I can bring and we can meet up and can hand them over which will save you freight - will have a second run of black and gold mirror by then.
-
Looking forward to this and what a great venue!
At least 2 carloads of us including people looking to buy.
Happy to bring Klondike along if I can get one of the north coast guys to transport....Williams needs an E/M rep $!&

We will have a range of games room related signage available at this show as well as precut stencils. Of course orders can also be taken and items then shipped out.
Stencils include...
FIREPOWER
JOKER POKER
8 BALL
GENIE
VOLLEY.
Gamesroom related signage..
FREEPLAY ARCADE
PINBALL ARCADE
PENNY ARCADE
Possible GOTTLIEB signature signs
Colours vary... Freeplay Arcade and Pinball Arcade are the same design... Penny Arcade is a lot more old school and harks back to the 30's/ 40's when these machines made a huge impact.
Sample FREEPLAY ARCADE here.. ( size 660 X 310 X 80)
Hope to see you all there... Gav
-
The sign looks great, how much are they as maybe I can order one, you can use to promote at the show and I can take it home - saves you lugging it back.
-
As well as the Space Invaders posters it looks like I will have bumper stickers in time...they are printed, I just have to have them airfreighted.
samples here (and yes, I corrected the art designers spelling mistake BEFORE they were printed %.%)
-
YES. the signs Gav(Retropin) is doing look amazing. Pricing and a PM to confirm colours etc and if a PM via the forum is cool to order etc would be great Gav.
Again, the work u do with neon etc, is the best for 1 million miles without a doubt. I think its fair to say anyone buying any neon product from Gav would be getting a top quality product. The work u did at movieworld plus the other threads we have seen on the custom neon is very cool !
-
+ 1 Gav's work is amazing
I've had Gavin repair some damaged pub neon signs over the years, first class work indeed *%*
-
Why thank you for the kind words.....
5 signs will be available at the show.
2 off PINBALL ARCADE @ $450EA
2 off FREEPLAY ARCADE @ $450EA
1 off PENNY ARCADE @ $400
Colour of the sign shown is Green and Amber.. others will have a combination of WHITE, RED, FLAME, BLUE, SUPER TURQUOISE.
pinball & Freeplay Arcade signs are mounted inside a 4.5mm thick acrylic box and can be hung or mounted to a wall
Penny arcade is classic neon red with vinyl backing mounted onto routed timber.. transformer sits behind and so needs to be mounted onto a wall with 50 - 60mm spacers.
I havent put the Penny Arcade sign together yet ( juggling all this in between other jobs), but the draft can be seen below..

looks great

-

I was looking forward to having a bash on Bank A Ball !!! Oh well
-
it was said at one stage that some of the non playing games would be available for the night session. The concern was over the issue of the machines being on and played 6-7hrs straight plus the night as some play up if given a heavy play session and parts are hard to come by.
Though it is a shame as it's the best time to have a go of these.
-
moved the Big Hurt today, its a player.
-
Really looking forward to this... hope the signs get to greg in time... stencils will be cut tomorrow and taken as luggage.
Ill also have a "request" book on the stall so people can request stencils to be made and leave contact details.. plus any type of games room signage theyd like to see.
it all gets made eventually
-
I'm also flat out organising things to display.........

Not long now $#$
I am bringing a friend along who is new to Pinball but has only played them in her teens.

Nice lineup of machines, would like to buy another machine if only I had a place to fit it. !@#
-
Sadly,my Klondike and Abra Ca Dabra wont make it in time this year due to transport timing woes and the understandably tight ship you guys are running . Next year for sure...
Nice to see a Big Casino there as it is exactly the same age as me (July '61).
Is there any idea of expected numbers at this stage?
-
There is interest from both forums and has been in the local papers and radio stations, but hard to tell numbers.
The goal is a good turn up over the whole weekend but not too many that you can't move or get a game. What really determines the success as well is the venue getting business from drinks and meals from the visitors as they are supplying the venue for free. If the owner is happy there is a good opportunity to get 2 function rooms next year for nothing allowing 100 to 120 machines. I have had the good camera cleaned and will document the show on the Saturday so others can get a feel of it and try and make it to the Sunday session if not to the next one - 2013 if the owner is happy.
The machines are starting to be moved today as Luke has kindly loaned his truck with a tail lift for machine pickups. If we are lucky enough to do another show next year we will have more time next year.
In addition most money generated from entry etc is going to the local SIDS Kids as they nearly had to shut down due to lack of government funding so we are helping others as well.
For any one traveling up on the Saturday and staying the night you are welcome to come on the Saturday night for a further $10 entry for the real pinheads so another opportunity to play pins, drink and there will ba a afpa rated comp being played as well - just ask the guys during the day about it. The start time is 6.30pm till late, plus this should look awesome all lit up at night with 50 to 60 machines running. Probably be a experience with the noise as well as this is my first time going to a place with more than 10 machines.
If you see a guy with a sky blue Pinfest shirt on - say g'day, see you there.

Great read! What a wonderful venue, looks like a certainty to be successful from an organisational point if view. Hopefully the public respond well.

Wow looks insane, how good is the venue!

Is there a Aussie Pinball sign advertising our forum anywhere at the venue. I noticed a Aussie Arcade one hanging up.
I thought originally it was decided/it was going to be a non forum style meet.
Swinksy, are there any AP members on the Newcastle Pinball Assosciation committe.?? Will it be easy for anyone next year to get involved if they arent a member of AA and only a member of AP etc or is this now predominantly only a AA run affair ?
ps - the photos look great

The photos look AWESOME - Well done to all involved.
Wotto created an Aussie Pinball Banner and Gav printed it up and donated it to our site to use for the 2008 Expo. I've had it hanging in my garage ready for any other Expo / event in the future that we are invited to.
I chose not to ask the organizers if we could use our banner for Pinfest, as it was made very clear to me (as AP Co-Owner and an APR Sponsor) that the Pinfest Event was not forum centric. I thought it would be unprofessional and would be against the spirit of the event. I'm sure the organizers "forgot" to ask if we were interested in sending up our banner.. Interesting..
!@#

Looking good, keep the photos coming!

Man I wish I was there. I should have got my shit together and got there. My Friday night was so bad I would have been better off at any rate. !)#
-
I thought originally it was decided/it was going to be a non forum style meet.
This is rather surprising - APR is a paid sponsor of the event and AP was asked to and provided a layout for the booklet - I did think
this was going to be a non-partisan event - well at least that's what we were told - which we were all in favour of as good for the hobby. We could easily have supplied a banner as Nino mentioned.....
-
Great pics nice line up *%*

sorry guys no photos today as spent the day in hospital as my 3yr old decided to have a fall in Kmart 39min before pingfest kickoff and split her cheek open and needed to go under for a operation - hopefully going tonight and tomorrow.

I saw the pre photos and thought that myself, Extra Ball here and myself were the main AP members and my understanding that the advertising was going to be equal in the handout booklet and no mention of banners otherwise would have got one off Nino and Nick to install last night. Sorry guys if I knew I would have jumped at it.
It is predominantly 9 guys in the committee and I am the main rep for AP with the other 8 being mainly AA with Blue 95 and Extra Ball visiting AP.
-
Looks good shame AP didn't get a banner there but is it ran by AA?
Peter

That's not what we were told.
The important thing is that everyone enjoys the weekend - Pinballs and Hobbyists ^^^

Hopefully this has and will be a great show and that we can learn from some mistakes made in this one as we did have only 9 weeks to pull it together.

I'm sure the next one will be better. However, it's naive to lump the forum banner issue into the "mistake" category.
-
Anyone know what the opening times are?

tonight is a comp and free play cost is $10
tomorrow is 10am to 4pm cost is $10 per person.
hope to see you there.

Many "public" types around? Ie non-pinball owners reliving their youth?

I hope the weekend goes really well. I cant see why it wont. Should be lots of people there. (I hope you and ya daughter are OK Swinksy).
Hopefully Gav(Retropin) or Mike(Homepin) have snapped some photos/videos today and they can share/post them on Aussie Pinball or one of the members who frequents both forums could please.
Hopefully next year there is a AP banner flying high and AP committe members continue to be a part of the organising committee ang get a decent say/share in the organising etc..
With Gav and Mike attending and having professional stalls set up, AP is getting the best representation anyone could ask for anyway I reckon. (well done guys !)
Dying to see some photos and get some feedback about the day !
-
Well, firstly thanks guys for the kind thoughts re my daughter, she is doing well - 3yr old trolley surfer ?????
I went for the comp / forum's night - alot of fun and nice to put some faces to names - had a chat with Mike (Homepin) he is a character spruking away with his portable speaker system %.% with a silent auction of donated items.
Lots of great machines, and a few rare ones I am sure as well, heard that mister Hankin himself visited and signed a Howzat and Star Wars machines, had a good chat with Norbet from AMD as well as Luke and have to say a really good vibe overall with no forum verse forum feeling, just lots of friendly pinball people and their families. The guys that advertised their services even standing next to their machines said that they got alot of interest and potential work with little flyers stuck on the back glass so ideas for guys come the next event.
Approx 300 tickets sold during today's session and some of those were families so estimates were 400 people, with every game having a person on it as well as 2 deep behind waiting for a go. A couple of the guys including Norbet said that the crowd was different compared to meets, lots of families including kids with the jaws dragging on the ground - which was one of the goals with this show, and it was believed people that heard via the radio and advertising along the road etc.
It's even said that the owner of the Hotel is going to buy a few machines so looking positive for number 2 show next year.
I will post some photos soon and I did a dodgy walk around video - which I was walking a bit fast past machines - sorry.
-
here are a couple of photos to help you guys out.
looking in from the outside
and the hankins
-
and 2 more
1. is a world defender which is like a Terminator 1 machine which was cool but had a hard life with some extreme operator hacks.
2. is Master Stroker which is a Madrid game, interesting and a fun player. It has an unusual mod so I have been told which is quite effective. Though the machine is old it has 2 balls and the guy who did this up put a ball eject in the centre of the apron out of site and it ejects a second ball into play which extra ball is lit so turns it into a multi ball. When the guy got this machine it was in real bad shape and he has done a awesome job.
In addition I met the owner of a Bally Bingo Ball which was a interesting experience being educated and gambled away - I can see the issue of gambling back in the day in the states with this type of machine, very cool.
-
just uploaded a video to youtube - not sure how long it takes to show up there, but here is the link. I just did a lap past all the machines - the first 6 were luke's machines and the last 6 were the tournament machines.

Hopefully I will get some decent photos tomorrow along with a good vibe crowd shot.

this is without doubt am amazing event and simply a stunning success - day 2 today is bound to be even bigger.
I can say, with 100% assurance that there is NOT a single scrap of AA vs AP animosity from anyone at the event - organisers, members and exhibitors included.
There is no need for anyone to think that there is - if the AP banner was here there are 20 people who would hang it up in a flash.
this is a great opportunity to put forum differences behind us and promote pinball to the public
hats off to the organisers for creating a world class event
-
I knew it would be a HUGE success with very organised people like Swinksy(Jady), Mike(Homepin) and Gav(Retropin) involved. ABSOLUTELY WELL DONE GUYS, YOU HAVE MADE US ALL VERY PROUD !
I am so glad the event has attracted such a wide spread of people from all over. The photos show lots of kids which mean lots of families have enjoyed all the pinball machines too !
Its a great few days/time for our great Pinball Industry in general and it looks like there will be double the pinball machines there next year and double the people. It cant get any better than that.
A big thanks to AMD, Bruce and Norbert for supporting the show. Great blokes. The 2013 Pinball Festival looks like a big winner already ! Hope u guys have a great Sunday of pinball fun !

I'm back home now as of writing this, sorry i missed out on meeting you swinksey.
Me and Ian (howzat) had an absolute blast there and will be back next year for sure ^^^ and will definitely look into bringing a game each *%*
Was good to meet a few fellow AP members and put a face to the names, got to meet Gav (retropin) and Mike (homepin), great guys and fun to hang out with!! I was VERY tempted to buy one of Gavs neon signs.. VERY tempted *%* *%*
We also met Pinpal (sorry i cant remember your name) !@) and this morning i got to meet and talk with Ken (skybeaux).
VERY successful event i would say!! I got heaps of pics and a couple of vids (might post some later on). And i got to play a LOT of games i hadn't played before which was good.
WELL DONE to all involved in making this happen @@* @@*

Well a big thank-you to all the people who put the 2012 Caves Beach Pinfest together,, it was a BALL, *%* sorry for the pun!!
I enjoyed it immensely and I got to meet Homepin, Mr Pinbologist, Retropin, and Howzat from Aussie Pinball.
Myself and my partner Sandra enjoyed both days, we had sore fingers when we left on Saturday but we had a fantastic time. @@*
The best games there for me was Paragon, Terminator 2., Monster Bash, Bride of Pinbot, Black Pyramid witch had an awesome sound and Cirqus Voltaire.
I was asked if I could bring along my Bally Flash Gordon for next years event ? %$%
Looking forwould to the next pinfest, bigger and better next year,, fingers crossed. ^^^

Yeah sorry that I didn't meet you guys, I couldn't make it yesterday but was there last night and from start to midday today.
I played so many games that I have never seen before so that was awesome.
Mike and Gav were top blokes, had a good chat and I caved in and bought one of Gav's neon signs. ^^^, and Gav when I got home a big thumbs up from my wife she loves it as well.

Thanks for the photos guys ^^^
All I can say is WOW.. I'm sitting in front of the computer WISHING I was there !
This has to be "right up there" with some of the USA Expo / Conventions / meets. Well done to the organizers ^^^
Good to see Gav and Mike "Photo bomb" Homepin #@#

A huge thanks to AP, APR, Hot Rodded Pins, Retropin and Homepin for your generousity in sponsoring the event with adds, especially for Gav and Mike making probably the biggest trip out of everyone to come this event @@*
Hopefully the venue owner is stoked and wants to run another - bigger and better in every way.
-
Todays turn-out definately bigger than yesterday, the crowds lining-up to get in at 10am. I estimate that we had 800 adults minimum, and a ton of kids over the weekend. The machines really only had the odd issue that needed a repair, and we fixed them within minutes of them going down. Big thanks to the expertise of Ken, Graham, Grant, and Luke's Tech for being on-hand to fix them so quickly. Thanks to the sponsors, it was a pleasure to have your involvement. I may not say this again publically, but........Mike Homepin is one top fellow indeed, really obnoxious, but tremendously helpful. Thanks to the volunteers, I know it was a ton of work, but we all enjoyed it, and have made an awesome contribution to promote the hobby for years to come (big things to come from the NPA, other than Pinfest). Huge thanks to Caves Beach Hotel, such a generous offer of an outstanding venue. Everyone that supplied machines, pinball, and the hobby is so much better for all of you.

does anyone have the final count and list of machines which were on show ?????????????????
Surprisingly, I didnt see a Addams Family or a Twilight Zone, thought a AC/DC Pro would have made it too ? (I did offer mine but someone said there was already a Pro on the included list) maybe next year !!
-
yep no TAF or TZ nor a CFTBL or even a AFM along with so many others were not there, maybe next year if we get both rooms with a possible capacity of about 120.
Refer to post #94 as it has a very close list with maybe a couple slight differences but approximately 58-60 machines in a 30 x 10m room.
-
just heard that we had 810 paid tickets but with families probably a few more in numbers. This means around $8k for SIDS charity which is awesome.
A few people asked what is happening next weekend %.% and the owner of the venue has offered 2 function rooms next year, so Pinfest 2013 potntially twice as big will be coming to Caves Beach - Homepin loved the drive too %.%.
So once organisers release a date, if no one else does I will start a new thread and rally sponsors and get people revved up to visit beautiful Caves - not Blue Pacific %.%
-
for a 8 week organising time only, the NPA did a outstanding job ! I reckon the Cavesbeach Resort owner would be both happy and surprised at such a great turnout.
I think next year there will be ALOT of interstate people like me and others who will be able to make it next time round and definately book a room at that beautiful resort.
-
Looks like an Awsome weekend hopefully next year I'll be able to make the trip
-
What a great event and effort put in considering there wasn't even a Newcastle Pinball Association 8 weeks ago when it was decided that this event was doable. We got lots of people out playing pinball and we got a lot of interest in the Newcastle Pinball Association. The amount of people that came up and shook our hands on the way out this afternoon to thank us for putting on the event was great, the publican was happy with us and already asking about next year.
-
Thanks for the pics, this festival looks as if it was held in the states, well done to all that made this happen.
Events like this are what the pinball hobby needs.
-
Fantastic show and a lot of work for all involved but what a great crew.
Funny I didn't realise the absence of "Cookie Cutters" like Adams Family" until it was mentioned but there was stiil a good variety with definitely no complaints.
The number of people with their own machines who thought there was no one else out there with one was amazing.
There was also a long line of people with non working machines who will keep our two local techs busy for years.
A number of machines also changed hands so expect a number of newbies joining the forum over the next little bit.
Our 20 page program went down well with the punters as did the AP key rings that Gav supplied....people love free stuff.
Great to put faces to names and Gav is certainly a top guy but Mike Homepin that is another story. <.> He did win the silent auction for the David Hankin autographed Orbit 1 back glass so he went home a happy man.
Just to back up the recent comments from those that were actually there and involved. It was rewarding to see the Newcastle Pinball Association event was free of any the politics of pinball.
The venue owner was that impressed that he wants us to fill 2 function rooms next year. Don't miss it.
-
You're going to need a bigger boat.
Great weekend, great venue, great people, great lineup. Nice to know it'll happen again next year.
Carolyn and I scored a beautiful room at the resort and so had a very relaxed evening.
I spent the entire evening bullshitting with all sorts of people, and played till my hands went numb.
Whilst we enjoyed the new stuff, we spent most of the night over the other side. Master Stroke was a treat, Bank a Ball ,2001 and Capersville are exquisite restos, Mustang took most of my time. Countdown had me giggling all night with the space tiger (you had to be there) and the Bobby Orr Bally felt straight out of the crate.
I ended up buying Big Casino tonight via SMS as it is a July 1961 just like me (and it's former owner Mark) -it will need a tidy up and a fettle but is a sweet little table with a lot of the hard work done (as well as a couple of funny little homebrew mods).
Hats off to everyone involved. Everyone was accessable, happy to yarn, welcoming and committed to making the weekend a success.

last little vid with alot of photos quickly mashed in together with some old and new pinball music.

Firstly - MASSIVE congratulations to ALL and everyone involved in getting this event up and running and ensuring it a success on its first run , and by the looks of it , ensuring that this will build into a massive annual event- Top Quality games , a great location, well organised and well promoted - THIS is what has been needed in Oz for a long time - From the looks of it THIS will be THE event , THE festival/expo that has been talked and talked about for years that never came to fruition........CONGRATULATIONS again for making this a reality  :worship:
For the 800+ that went through the gates to have actual QUALITY games to play / experience is fantastic - THATS how 'newbies' walk away WANTING a game and wanting to possibly become part of this community :041:
And Cavey - all I can say re TAF and TZ - is THANK GOD for that :lol
-
Huge thanks to all involved for arranging this awesome event ^^^. Extremely well done to everyone involved.
I took my brother and 13yr old nephew along yesterday and we had a blast .
Caught up with a few members and great to finally meet Mike and Gav .
Heard lots of parents (mostly Dads) telling their kids about their arcade days and saw lots of kids and families having a great time .
All the games I saw looked to be very well looked after and some great looking restored EM's there too .
Excellent venue for an event like this.
Looking forward to next year .
For anyone interested ..
Thats me in the AP shirt in the last pic in post 152 , with my brother playing JP next to me and nephew waiting for his turn .

Fantastic job guys, well done! Looks like a great event *%*

Hi Wotto, It was just unusual not to see a Addams Family or a Twilight Zone given they were made in the 15,000 bracket, but another one i also just remembered was Star Trek Next Generation. Again, a very high number made etc.
But i am sure everyone who went had a blast because they had alot of great machines to chose from. I wouldnt mind taking down 35 machines next year if i was allowed. I would just exclude the ones that people down that way already have, but I would love to take down the collection that i have decided to keep for the time being seeing I sold the stored machines. Just have to think about hiring a cheap semi trailer to move them.lol
Maybe the owner of the venue should be thinking of extra extra rooms because the enthusiasm of the pinball community could probably go nuts and fill the place 5 times over if given the opportunity.
-
There was a lack of some cookies, because the guys that contributed machines didnt own any of them. TZ maybe an iconic game, but would it be a good game to introduce a newbie to pinball?
-
yeh TZ would be fine for a newbie, any machine really, cause on looks alone, some machines just pull you in and you want to buy them after seeing the really cool artwork etc. Any pinball machine is a definate attraction for sure. Any widebody machine with a pair of Swinksy's mirror blades would look as wide as a cruise ship.lol
As it was, it would have looked super cool to any newbie walking into the Pinfest. Like kids in a lollie shop. Nothing looks better than a big room full of pinnies all lit up.
-
Nothing looks better than a big room full of pinnies all lit up.
Agree 100% - well apart from a nice set of ......... #@#
-
Just a few things after reading the banter of people that were not involved, and privy to the background organisation. Pinfest is forum neutral, representatives of both forums, and all sponsors were made aware that Pinfest volunteers would hang any banners, and hand-out any promo gear. AA just happened to have a banner/promo stuff, and AP had keyrings, plus both forums given free sponsorship in the booklet. We couldnt have been more fair in this.
It is remiss for people to single-out/name individuals, and attribute much of the succcess to them. Pinfest was a team effort, and just a handful of people could never pull-off an event of this magnitude.
The Newcastle Pinball Association welcomes you guys next year, and know that Nino will be bringing some of his awesome resto's along for everyone to enjoy, plus I expect a huge-arse banner!
-
Only the AP guys we know like Swinksy, Homepin and Retropin were named/singled out and thanked for their efforts cause we dont have any information at all as to who the committe was made up of etc.
Since 9 out of 10 committe members were from another forum, its not like we were going to thank non AP people personally on AP because we dont know who they are. I am sure the other forum would be thanking their people like we thanked ours. Also, thats why a general thanks to the Newcastle Pinball Assosciation was made cause that includes everyone. Perhaps the NPA would encourage/invite more AP people to join the committe and we can get more than 1 person on the team. It all means a bigger n better show for next year.
It is great that the whole show was forum neutral and professionally run. I think the banner thing came as a surprise to some, reading some of the response comments about it. I am sure the mix up wont occur again next year and people from AP will happily fly a flag/banner etc. As long as people dont try to out do each other with forum stuff/advertising, the forum inclusion thing sounds like a great idea.
Looking forward to next years committe make up and ideas. Until then, we will keep dealing with Swinksy and get/give questions to him about the next show if thats OK with Swinksy since he has done a great job keeping us up to date on AP.
-
Just appreciate that other pinfest organisers are members of both forums, yes swinks and Gav are more active on AP.
Cheers
-
Alot of us on here dont go on the other forum at all, so I personally wouldnt know that about committe members being on both forums or who they are etc.
Accordingly, for those that dont go on the other forum, EB, it might be a great idea to list the guys who are on the committe if thats OK. They should all be thanked for their great efforts and if we know who they are etc, it will help with communication for next year. Again, the show was great and every person who contributed did a amazing job.
-
I am personally sick to death of this forum vs forum crap .. its all about the hobby . Pinfest was a great showcase for the hobby . ()

I don't see the issue with a few personal thanks as it is much appreciated and makes the effort all the more worth while. Crikey, hats off to Gav and Mike for flying from Qld, with promo luggage and paying for a rent a car and accommodation etc - that is dedication and faith that this was going to be a great show - thanks guys @@*.
People are just being honest, where calling people out and introducing this comment is negative to the positive (the show just passed) - lets just keep it all positive as negative crap just leaves a bad taste.

Great vids, swinks and a top effort overall. Your genuine passion for the hobby is without question. ()
Did you take any of your product along to the Pinfest (mirror blades etc)? Or did any of the machines set up have your blades installed?

Thanks mate, much appreciated and like you said did it for the hobby and the reward was seeing all the kids. A few guys from work went with there kids and hearing their stories of what their kids thought made it a very special reward. The last reward will be seeing SIDS getting their cheque and keeping them above water longer.
As for blades, nah did not worry about it, just wanted to look around, play and enjoy as it was my first ever meet / show, so it was a great experience just to soak it all in.
As well it was great to meet some of the guys behind the Forum names: retro, home pin, millsy, graham (owned bingo machine) who took the time to educate me on this incredible machine, geoff (enjoyed his twister - love the spinner on this better than the Xmen) and a few others that their names have escaped me - already. A shame we did not have a chat goodolddays as remember seeing your shirt and was going to introduce myself but every time I saw you on the Sunday you were on a game and unfortunately had to leave by noon on Sunday, same as Mr Pinballogist and Pinpal and probably a few others that I have forgotten but going off the photos remember seeing your faces. Next time.

Hi Guys what a great weekend #*#
I play pins from aprox 11 am to 11pm take off about 2hrs for breaks
I got to meet M ike Home pin and Gav you all know Gav and we laughed most the day I meet pin pal Luke Norbert Dan Marco the guy who wrote those beautiful pin books Ken Skybeaux who was fixing them The Newcastle pizza brothers who had 14 games there and Andy and his wife
What a team effort from all those guys to make it all happen
It was also good to see the public's smiles with some saying that they want to buy a game how good is that
Gav I hope you didnt take any signs home with you Mitch and I had a blast thanks Newcastle Howzat

Well im now back home after what turned out to be one hell of a weekend... what can i say?
THIS WAS A HUUUUGE SUCCESS!!!!
Yet again i am staggered at how many people turn up to play pinball... families and more families... dads walking in with milk crates for their kids to stand on.. it was just brilliant to see!
I have to take my hat off to all who organised this.. they did a brilliant job and i couldnt have met a nicer bunch of blokes... everyone chipped in where they could to promote pinball further. i had people coming up to me asking where they can get games fixed.. where can i buy the game ive just played.. where can i buy parts... etc etc. I kept leaving my stall to take a potential buyer to the game owner and introduce.. was bloody magic.
TOP TOP event in a great location... i spoke to the owner Sunday lunchtime and he asked if i was back next year and it would have BOTH function rooms for free.. he was one happy man.
If this is a launching pad for something again next year and then on again.. it couldnt have been better.
No AP banner? well thats because i didnt have one to hang!
But i gave out a ton of AP keyrings and i gave out a ton of AA key rings also. I made sure i had both scattered over my stall.
Mike and i did well on our stalls... LOTS and LOTS of interest.. i sold ALL neon signs, 1 set of stencils and have orders to follow up.
Ive been with Mike for 4 days now sharing a dank motel room ..LOL... we havent stopped talking for all that time, been bloody great and apart from the monster farts he does during the night , i can honestly say its all been pleasure.
To sum up... BIG BIG congrats and thankyou to the organisers.. you had this event well polished and it showed with its success... thoroughly enjoyed being part of your event and meeting such great guys... pinball is well and truely alive,
LOL- David Hankins face was a real picture when he saw the turn out.. he was amazed.. just amazed and i can guarantee he has it all mulling around in his head... My God... Pinball just refuses to die.... i should have kept all that tooling.
Once again, a pinball event just took off more than anyone imagined.. i think pre event estimates were maybe 100 people a day, well that was covered by lunch Saturday. Make an effort to get there next year, it is well well worth it and costs very little for a great weekend.
Thanks everyone involved and a big thank you to everyone that introduced themselves to me... it is SO good to meet members ^^^
Wait till you see my stall next year....... %.% %.%
-
awesome post Gav, it was a pleasure to have you at Pinfest. I guess that it was torture to spend 4 days with Mike, it's not something I would even wish upon a pommie.

Mike Homepin, what can I say.............what a top fellow he is, really obnoxious, but super helpful, and genuinely an asset to pinball.

I'm really enthused with the positive comments, and all I keep thinking is that this event was "World Class". FINALLY the hobby / industry has a professionally organized event to rival our friends in the USA. Maybe not as big (yet), but Rome was not built in one day.
I've passed on my congratulations to Greg, Swinks, Chris and Dom Slevin via email on behalf of the forum and Australian Pinball Restorations. Both Greg and Swinks have been actively posting excellent pictures and information for the benefit of those who could not be there, and hopefully it will inspire more of us to attend next year. I plan on being there, and I look forward to meeting everyone.
So who's thinking of going next year ?

a few stats
Bally Playboy = 505 plays (average 27 games per hour)
Powerplay = 486 (average 26 games per hour)
Black pyramid had about = 450 (24 games per hour)
I will extend this list as the figures are released.
In effect the show was open for 13hours and another about 6 hours for the comp = 19hours

My brother and I were keen to have a game on Ken's Playboy but everytime we tried someone was on it . We literally almost put 20c on the glass to reserve a game for old times sake :lol Eventually we did get a game on it though .
Swinksy .. yeah shame we didn't meet but no doubt will catch up face to face around the pinball traps somewhere soon.

This really sounds like a major success and a real boost to public awareness in the area for pinball.
If the organisers are interested in demonstrating Homebrew next year, the success has really got me motivated to get back to NPC 002 and finish it and take it up with Coconut Island.
Congratulations once again to those that pulled this off so well!! ^^^

I would love that, as I am keen in the near future to do a homebrew pin myself - as I have a cnc and mechanical knowledge though electrical may be a challenge but sure if I got help (paid of course) from the likes of Ken and Mike I could develop one.
Please consider it that would be awesome.

I arrived back home at 1am this morning so apologies for a late post.
I have to say it was an event that opened the eyes of a LOT of people. Mostly ordinary families having a day out, lots of mums who seemed to be quite happy that 'little Johnny' was having a great time and for such a small cost - and all to a good cause to boot.
I'm sad to report that I only sold $92 worth of S.I. posters and bumper stickers towads the cause but I guess every bit helps.….
Hats off to the organisers, simply one of the most polished efforts I have ever seen - and I've been to a lot of events where 'professionals' were paid very large sums of money and the result was often pretty half baked. Perfect venue - perfect number and quality of machines and brilliant promotion of the event. It just shows that you can't buy success like this, you have to have a passion for it.
It was great to meet so many forum members from both AA and AP and great to talk to so many people who had made up their minds to buy a machine after attending. Many 'newbies' asked me about spare parts and I was happy to put their minds at ease about the availability. It was good to catch up with my mate from Brisbane - Gav (Retropin). We had tables next to each other and shared a room (separate beds thankfully) and a rent-a-car which eased the cost burden a little.
It was astounding just how many people walked in and said "I've had a pinball in the (insert out of the way place here - garage etc) and it hasn't worked for years - I thought I was the only person who owned one". They were able to get contacts for parts and repairers over the weekend so I'm sure we will see a few new faces popping up in the near future.
I spoke to so many people I had lost my voice by Sunday night (some would say that was a good thing). There was a huge mix of people from all walks of life and not one single harsh word between anyone. One young fellow came back in after we had closed up on Sunday and thanked us for putting on the show - "I have been trying to convince my girlfriend to let me buy a pinball, after today she wants a Playboy (Bally) - I couldn't get her off it!"
Another moment was a bit scarier - a large, hary biker type came up to me and grabbed me demanding to know where the owner of the Junkyard was (it had a for sale sign on it) - "I've been tryin' to ring the bastard but he doesn't answer his phone - I NEED to give him this money before someone else buys the machine". All worked out well, they hooked up and he bought it!
Probably the highlight for me was chatting with David Hankin and telling him that I was going to re-create boards for Hankin pins - he said "that's great" so I guess that's about as good an endorsement as you can get. I was also chuffed to win the signed Orbit Backglass even though EB stitched me up (you know what I mean Greg) - all for a good cause and lucky my wife knows I only paid $50 for it (wink).
Anyway there can be no doubt that I will be back next year (if invited) with an even greater range of boards and, you never know, I might even have a few surprises to show off by then now that the industry has been released from the death grip of the past few years (subtle dig at a certain EX rights owner).
Some pics from my camera in no particular order:

There were a few 'bodgy' repairs - don't bother looking for a nut driver - these pliers will do
(http://www.homepin.com/test/bodge.jpg)
The EM's needed a little bit of love but were VERY well presented and were a big hit
(http://www.homepin.com/test/emrepair.jpg)
Even Tony from the Pinball Shed came along (could have sold 20 machines if he had them there)
The kids just LOVED this EM baseball game. Every time I looked across at it there was a different kid playing it - girls & boys

Left to right: David Hankin, yours truly, Bruce (from AMD) and Norbert

and the highlight for me - gas bagging with David Hankin and receiving his approval to make Hankin repro boards.

If it is scheduled outside of footy finals next year then I'm there.

Well done, sounds like a great event! Key factor here is not having to pay for the venue which makes everything so much easier, and the organisers have obviously done a great job in getting pinballs and a few stalls in place.
Would love to have been there and caught up with a few people again but the timing just didn't work out for me this time around.
All the best for this event's future!! Long live pinball!!
