WILLIAMS SYSTEM 3 TO 7 LAMP AND COIL TESTER
« on: March 06, 2010, 02:25:01 PM »
While working on my brothers Time warp i got sick of unplugging all the lamp and coil plugs while repairing the driver board so i decided to build myself a rig that can be left plugged in and taken out with the driver board.  Also testing these boards in the machine you always have the thought in your mind is it the globe? Is it the Socket or is there a brocken wire this eliminated all that and simply tests the board not the whole setup.

The Red Leds are for the lamp Matrix they are laid out exactly the same as the lamp matrix for each game.  When its plugged in you put the game in lamp test and any Leds that do not light you can simply look on the matrix and see what its for.

The red buttons are to test the special solenoid inputs.  This can be used two ways either with the coils plugged in or the tester unit.   Pushing each button will fire either the Coil or Solenoid it represents

The green leds are for the standard Coils. As with the lamp matrix you insert the plugs put the game in coil test and each green (and orange) Led should pulse like its doing a coil test if any of the leds dont light you have a problem.  (Some times this might not normaly be noticable if your game doesnt use that coil output this way all coil outputs are tested)

Here is a picture of the half finished unit

Well 90% finished here is a video of it in action lets hope this works

Not sure why but some of the leds were not picked up by the camera but they are all working.

Also the two yellow flipper ones are disconnected as they stay on not pulse like the rest of the coils so there is to much current for them

Nicely done mate...i'll buy you a ruler so you can get your LEDs in a straight line hehehehehe  :lol

The next project would be almost the opposite to what you made......a lamp-checker, with a matrix of P.Button switches to manually fire each lamp at leisure, which beats the hell out of using the pinball 'lamp-test' mode....
Along the same lines, a coil-checker could also be made to work the same as the lamp-checker....

Well done!
MM.

Very nice! I've got plans to make my own test rig for WPC games, and one of the things I wanted to do is something similar with lamps and switches so I can test the switch matrix and lamp matrix on the bench.

Just haven't had the time/initiative, but seeing this does inspire me to get off my arse :)
