Centaur won't start a game
« on: February 01, 2015, 05:02:08 PM »
Hi guys,
Yesterday I removed the Alltek MPU from my Centaur to test another game and since I put it back I can't start a game. I don't know if it's related to the MPU or not as I was previously having a problem with switches in the ball trough but I think that is fixed. Anyway the dip switches are set back to Centaur ( I've checked multiple times) and when I turn it on it all lights up but then the assembly (pic below) which kicks a ball up the subway ramp fires (there is no ball in here) and the displays all set to 0000000 as pictured. When I hit the start button nothing happens. Any suggestions?

If the displays are strobing 0's it means it does not think it has enough balls installed.  If there are five balls in the game, then most likely a switch fault in the under playfield ball trough.  I think it will still go into test mode so you can use switch test to see of the switches are working.

Thanks very much, I'll have another look at the switches.  ^^^

I just went through the switch test and none of the trough switches are registering. This makes sense now because I removed all of the balls earlier to check the switches and when I put them back in they did not load back into the trough as they are suppose to. The other playfield switches register just fine so I'm not sure why these others are all dead at the moment.

Sounds like a connector to the CPU board. Common issue if they are not repinned.

Yes, but looking at the schematic the trough switches are not all on the same strobe or return line, and he says the other switches are working fine?  The top lane switches are on the same strobe as the 4th and 5th ball trough switches, while the first in-line drop target and "4" target are on the same return as the 1st ball trough, 4th ball trough and end of trough switches, so check that these are all working.

I'm really feeling for you Adam, all the problems you're having with your games. Let me take the centaur off your hands so you can concentrate on the others  &&

I'm sure its an easy fix in the end good luck

Thanks for all of the advise guys, it's paid off. Pretty simple in the end. I reseated the MPU connectors and it started a game straight away. About half the connectors on the game have been repinned. Looks like it will be time well spent for me to do the rest of them.

 Sorry Rob.  <.>

May be worth renewing the solder on the header pins on the mpu, as well. If it hasnt already be done. Unsure.
