Have assembled well over 100 old photos from the 1930s to late 1960s of pinballs and arcade games on location.
So is there any interest in loading some of these for you guys to see some history - there are some beautiful old games.
Let me know and I can start loading up today
-
Get loading! *%* ^^^ () #*#

YES, please !!!
-
Definitely!
I think it would be great to have a section dedicated to pinball (and arcade) photos!... Nino or Tony???
-
Great idea.. Might have to make a new section - like a Gallery of sorts ?

I reckon so... maybe one for just general photo's - ie: the ones Illawarra_Steelers has, and maybe one for personal collections??

Enjoy,
These are just a sample - the last one is of Coney Island, Luna Park Sydney

Some more....

This one is my all time fave - standing infont of Gottlieb's Happy Clown from 1964 - I have this game and have this photo reproduced above the game. She is such a fox :D
With collecting old pins of this vintage I often wonder what the games have 'seen' while on locaction - imagine if they could talk, the stories they could tell
-
She is such a fox :D
You might need to clarify, do you mean the pin? or the girly? :lol
Personally, i'm leaning more towards the girly :D
I wonder if any of the these people would remember being in these pics?
These are fantastic though, capturing a great piece of arcade history.
Are these pics form photo's you have? or are they digital files you have?
It'd be nice to get hold of these in their largest size, i'd certainly print a few around my house.

Oh Marty,
No clarification needed - the woman is the fox!
Um, the pix have been 'borrowed' from all over the 'net over the past few years - have at least another 150, will see if there is any interest before posting some more
-
Tony, these pics are great, bring 'em on %$%
-
great photos keep loading. #*#

Fantastic stuff Tony - im itching to go fix that neon outside the Amusement centre
-
Yep, keep them coming!!!
These are much better than what I thought they were going to be!
-
I'm putting my hand up for a DVD with all these pics on it......if someone's gonna burn some ...
Fantastic pics there.
MM.
-
Yeah,
That is a good idea....probably wont happen until early next year though as I would need to sort through all the pix.
Would do at cost (disc + postage and packing).
-
That pic of the Bally Target Zero bought back an instant memory for me. Id forgotten completly about it, be nice to have one of those. Great pics mate ^^^
-
Well if you want to do a whole section, then i have a stack of old Billboard magazines from 30's and 40's during the depression and war. These are stacked with ads for pinball machines and anything coin operated. Id be more than happy to scan some in if anyone is interested.
These are ads and wanted to buy notices - many of the ads arent on IPDB for the related games, but lots of Gottlieb, wurlitzer, seeburg, Victory etc
-
Tony,
Love them, keep em coming...I to often wonder about the history of my machines, had one with engraving in timber Sally loves Barry or something similar. I wish someone had photos of the old arcades in Rye and Rosebud from the 70s.
Cheers
Dean

This thread now has its own forum so it doesn't get lost amongst other threads.
I find this nostalgia stuff fascinating and think it deserves to stand out on its own.

See- I have ( had ) this idea of getting one of those new wizz-bang fandangled digitial photo frames of about A4 size and mounting it in the pinball arcade room ( neatly with any wires concealed so it looks nice ) and then having it just churn and churn through images like that and images of flyers etc etc ......good idea??
Tony - If I do this , then it is imperitive that I obtain all your photos %$%

"Automatic Restroom" ???? that sounds potentially painful :lol
I'm happy that some people back then had the interest to snap off these pics.
When was the last time you walked into an arcade to play games and took photo's of the place? never?
For many people back then it must have been a real outing, a day worthy of snapping a few holiday snaps or whatever.
I also love how jam-packed the machines are next to eachother, can't fit enough in.
Too bad about servicing access hehehehe..

Loved this last lot of pics, what a piece of history, sadly most people in em have probably gone to the great penny arcade in the sky. Dont you just love the big old arcades full of pins, shooting machines and love o meters. Brands like midway, sega etc. Would love a time machine and go back and have a look at these places.
Im a dreamer and a droller #.#

Dean,
This is the very reasons I started collecting these in the first place. It isn't just the games that are awesome to look at but the people, fashion and locations are excellent. Each photo captures a moment in time.
I often look at my old pins from the late 1940s and 1950s and just wonder who played them and 'what the games story was'. I picked up a Gottlieb Criss Cross from 1958 this year and when I set her up, pulled the back door off and it was like somebody blew cigarette smoke in my face. Here was a game that was 50 years old and it still had the smoke stench inside it - so imagine the dingy pool hall this game would of been in at one point!
Will post more on Friday - off on our Christmas harbour cruise tomorrow ^^^
-
I would love to borrow Docs DeLorean and go back 50 years. These days you walk into TimeZone and feel like walking back out instantly. Fricken dance dance revolution and other redemption crap...
-
Have to agree about the people, fashion, places etc, it's really like another world, and disappearing fast ! !!!
I'm 42, and my own childhood memories of the family trips to the city/shopping/cafe's, the zoo, the royal melbourne show were always very active and colourful....lotsa people, lotsa places and things to do no matter which side alley you walked into.
Architecture was bolder, furnishings were more creative, woods, brass, steel, everything was heavy & clunky but had purpose, even shop signs were bold & stylish.
Sadly most of that is gone now, and whatever is left has been made-over with modern structure (what's the point?) and everything today seems to be plastic and disposable.
Looking at some of those pics gives me a few flashes into the past of very similar places i used to visit as a child.
Hanging onto pics like that is about all we have these days, as the old world crumbles away to make way for more granite and pre-fab....sad but true.
Where's a building with character when you want one???

Tell me about it! When I was doing contract work for AMF 10 Pin Bowling last year, redemption machines were all I had to work on. AMF sold off all their pinballs a few years ago.
When I worked for them full time about 10 years ago, there were at least 2 pinballs per bowling centre... but redemption was coming in, in a big way.
How times have changed... and these old photo's show exactly that.

I remember the old days and I always feel a sense of loss for the generations that missed out on the golden era (for me) 70's & early 80's.
My favorite memories were when Dad was an operator and he had "locations" with machines along walls similar to the EM line up above.. How's this for a lineup at a Cafe near my place..
KISS, Paragon, Space Invaders, Star Trek and Rolling Stones..
In the corner - EM - Triple Strike
Out the Font section - Williams World Cup
Opposing wall - Full of Bingos - Maybe six of them..

Well this photo gets its own post.
This photo is the Bulli Beach Kiosk that is where I cut my teeth playing pinball from 1969 to around 1978 when the place burnt down. This place was even open before school! I can remember we used to walk down, play some pins, go for a surf, scronge some Coke bottles to cash in for more games.
Even when we were in primary school and the Nuns (yeah I was a good Catholic boy then :lol) used to march us down to the pool every Wednesday afternoon during the warmer months. There were 4 pinball junkies who used to sneak up and play the pins instead of swimming in the 'Polo Pit'. One of us used to watch for one of the Nuns while the rest of us played.

I'll see if I can grab them on Christmas Day and I'll have a look through them.
-
i guess not many photos were taken of arcades back in the 70s 80s, because we never thought it would change
i thought pinball and arcades would be around as they were, forever !!!
i wish i had some photos of the arcades i used to hang out at.
one is now a butcher shop, another is a Chinese restaurant and the other one that was in town im not sure whats in there now.
-
Seeing I live only one block from where I grew up, both of kids got the 'see that shop, that is where I used to play pinballs'......it got to the point when they would say 'yeah I already know Dad, let me guess that is where you used to play pinball' even before I could open my mouth :lol
Living on the beach we were luckly that there was 5 shops that between them had around 40 pins and EM arcade games in the one small suburb!
Oh they were the days!
-
Not an arcade photo..... but a good depiction of pinball during the war.
I love this cartoon and it created an absolute stink when it was published.
I think its a classic example of how pinball was such popular culture in the 40's. This was printed pre flipper era. I think we post flipper and DMD generations under estimate the popularity of these games in their time. To have the nazi invasion of the western world depicted as a pinball game goes to show just how entrenched these games were in popular culture...or is Hitler playing against his own party?
A clever cartoon

some more....the 4th image is the 3 Stooges!

You don't see Coat'n'Hat stands in abundance like that anymore, that's GREAT !! !!
Speaking of early pins, were flippers ever mechanical? (button attached directly to flipper with linkages etc) before electronics/coils came along?
MM.

Nice Ass on the woman watching the guy's play 'Space Invaders' :lol :lol :lol

MM.
The flipper was invented in 1947 by Harry Mabs who at the time worked for Gottlieb. The main difference from later games was that one coil would drive upto 3 flippers, which made them weak. The other main difference was the flippers were 'reverse' to what we know today, that is the 'pointy' end was facing outwards. Other differences were the flippers were smaller in size at 2" rather than 3". Another difference was on all manufactures except for Gottlieb if you pressed the left flipper button both left and right flippers would energise.

Im also enjoying the old neon signs in these photos. The 'record your voice"sign looks like it was made at 25c, but a sign has been stuck over the top to read 35c

Pretty hard to "edit" neon signs huh? hehehehe
If i'm not mistaken, is the 35c sign simply a paper plate? spare no expense. &&

Just look at em all queueing up to play...just unreal!!!
I absolutley LOVE the shooting games at the arcade or show - buy the minimum amount, get to gauge the sights and then blow your sons mind when you win the BIGGEST toy on the rack.
These pics take me back too! Bloody hell, are we all getting old lamenting like this??
I know my memories will be different from most here as my early arcade days were spent in England, but honestly, those pics could well be brighton Pier. When i went back 10 years ago, i HAD to go to brighton Pier again - you know what??? Its hardly changed, still got old shooters, shove pennies, fortune tellers etc. They are selling most off now,, my dad is here for Xmas - ive given instructions to just buy what he can and ship it over. Even still had Allwin machines on site.
One day i WILL set up a classic arcade here in brisbane
-
The last 9 pix were all taken in Sydney. The arcade ones were late 1979 and the shooting gallery were 1963

No worries guys,
As mentioned when I get back to work in a few weeks will organise all the pix and cut to some CDs so if people want them will send them out for people to print out and hang in their gamesroom.
I picked out 12, enlarged them, got them printed out as photos and have sent them in to be professionally framed.
Have just found some more on another web site, will load them up later today!

Wow!
In the middle of sorting out a deal with an old operator who had games on location from the early 60s to 1990. All up there are about 45 games, not all pins but also EM arcade games (and vids such as Space Invaders etc).
In speaking with this guy I asked if by chance he had any pix of games on location etc. and to my surprise he said he has 'heaps'. So once I get my grubby paws on these you know where they will end up.
How cool would it be having 1960s and 1970s arcade shots from County Australia #*#
Derek - if you are reading this he has one Sega EM game in this stash ^^^

I like these old pics. What really bugs me is that we seem to have lost the photographic history of Australian Arcades. I guess arcades/pinball parlors were never considered to be of any historical or cultural significance. Yet take a town like Newcastle back in the 70's and 80's and the main drag had so many arcades. The arcades were a buzz of activity, families could enjoy some cheap fun. Shame photos are almost non-existant.
-
It is a shame, because the industry started in Australia in the early 50s. I know I have some old slides of machines back when Dad was importing them from the USA - Just a matter of finding them. I really hope they are still there.
Since I don't have any pictures to share - Here's a really cool story;
Dad had some machines in a Cafe in Fitzroy in the 60's. He was behind the counter, and 5 scruffy dudes walked in and asked for coffee. Dad had no idea who they were, other than than they had English accents and they needed a bath.
As they sat in the cafe, a patron walked up to Dad and told him that he had just served the Rolling Stones coffee !
Dad did speak to Mick Jagger for quite some time - But he cannot recall what they spoke about.
-
Cool story Nino,
I did have contact with an old operator that had some photos of their arcade in the late 1960s, he was going to send them and have asked him 3 times.
Will try again, would be cool to have some photos from Australia ^^^
-
This may help. I got online to Newcastle City Councils online photo library awhile back. I didnt find anything arcade (but will look again sometime), other councils may have similar online librarys.

-
2 more ^^^

OMG!! Too painful to look at...
...smashing up the Wms CYCLONE - i bet the puritanical prick took great delight in doing that,
The last is a BALLY BUMPER from 1936 being tipped over....
I guess this just goes to show what an effect these games had on peoples lives though.
We reckon they are REALLY boring to play ( flipperless) but here they are smashing them up due to the percieved detrimental effect they had on society.
And then go take a look at the people crammed in to play these games... havent seen crowds like that since Expo... priceless stuff
-
not a pin...but a nice juke
-
This is a picture I found while looking through the archives in Dad's photo collection. This is a picture of Dad's work colleague, Dick Carson. This man worked with Dad for 40 years, and was like a second Father to me. Sadly, passed away ten years ago. He was a great influence over my early years and he was an incredible Bingo, EM and Juke technician.
This picture is dated 13/04/1973, on location. Obviously he had just repaired either the Juke or the Gun Game.
-
Oh Nino - that is just the coolest photo so far. I just kept staring at it and thinking rather than just some random photo 'copied' off the web - here is a photo of a fella you knew, could date it and tell some history.
PLEASE PLEASE make an effort to find some more - I'm sure there are some more ^^^

Will do Tony.
Spoke to Dad about this picture (sits on my desk now), and he told me that the gun game (I don't recall the name) was "loaned" and never returned. Of course Dad is in his 80's now, and cannot remember what he had for lunch - but he remembers a "lost" machine.
The juke box was sold in 1975-76 - He cannot recall why.
-
I agree with Tony. Thank you and any more are appreciated!
J.D.
-
OK - here is a "real" pin picture.
I was working at Musictime in Brisbane and my wife had just had our son - this was the bunch of flowers I was about to take (from work) to the hospital for her.
I was the "head pin tech" at that time as I was the only one with electronic knowledge. You can see it is a Pokerino ??? pretty rare now I would think?
Anyway it is a REAL pic of pins in the field.
No comments about clothes/hair etc please........
-
Gotta love the late 70s / early 80s!!!

My fave of the lot - an arcade with a sign that said 'NO LOITERING' %.% ...no wonder there's no one there %.% what else were we supposed to do?

I wasn't even born then , but man that is AWESOME . I wish REAL arcades would come back as the atmosphere is something you just can't replicate at home . These so called new arcades with ticket dispensers are absolutely crap and the people who play them are even crapper ! Teach a young kid pinball and they love them . More pinball in the public would be awesome .
