**This is a work in progress, so will be slow between updates**
It has been a long time since I have posted any restorations and even longer that I have done one on my own machine.
I was undecided as to whether I wanted any more machines but after many long chats and some encouragement from Greg (RIP) I purchased my second Getaway.
I did a restoration back in 2009 which seems a lifetime ago and on-sold this machine to another member here interstate. I did miss playing it.
The first HS2 restoration attempt is here : http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=1063.0
The machine was sourced and purchased. Overall it was in good shape, no hacks, original boards, cabinet was structurally sound and I was very happy.
Apart from some unnecessary over fusing, the game was checked over and powered up where I enjoyed playing it for a little while. During this time I managed to secure a set of plastics from Nino and some other parts.
Just prior to its first power up:

It has the usual cab fade for these as well as some typical graffiti from our friends in Europe!

The playfield was in pretty good shape. A couple of the inserts had the usual lifting and some very minor insert wear. It also had some mylar / contact on it so overall has survived the wear and tear.

Fast forward a few months and I located a NOS playfield.
I could not resist the temptation so it was purchased..
The NOS playfield was drilled and dimpled, but a handful of the post holes (cliffy rubber type) were not drilled. I have no idea why and I also noted the pics of another NOS playfield on IPDB was the same?
So old playfield full stripped and assisted to ensure the post holes are 100% in the same location

NOS playfield is a great pick up Marty! Looking forward to the updates. ^^^
-
Awesome - heaps of pics please!! And were you nervous doing the drilling? Imaging buggering up one of the holes. Are you going to seal them?
-
Not really nervous there was only about 12 or so to do.
I did a Breakshot for Greg with a NOS playfield that had no holes or dimples. Now that was not fun.
The playfield will have another couple coats of clear before its finished..

Cabinet tear down underway.
Headbox removed and now stripped / sanded. Lower cabinet to be started asap.

Great thread Marty :) it's a game I've always enjoyed playing but never owned maybe one day :)
-
Great to see you weave your magic on your own machine. Looking forward to the updates and having a game !
-
Good luck with the resto, am sure it will be great when done.
-
NOS PF very nice *%*
-
Tiny bit more progress.
Cabinet has had all hardware removed, now in the process of being cleaned, polished etc.
Original vinyl / screened artwork removed. All up about 2 hours of work just with a heat gun and scraper.
Still need to remove the remaining glue. This will be done via D.A sander. I find this to be the least abrasive method. A few repairs need to be made, this will be done with automotive filler and finished with fine filler prior to initial primer coat.

Nice work with the camera, excellent quality and clarity.
If your going to take photos of your work ...that is how to do it....well done ^^^
-
Love seeing this coming along - top stuff ^^^ That glue is a mother to get off....
-
All looking good Marty. Keep the updates coming please. Let me know if there is ever an opportunity to sit it next to Fish Tales.
-
Marty loves his new Camera - and his new project ^^^
Can't wait to play this game when done.
-
Coming along nice Marty, like the snap on tools also ^^^
-
Marty just looking at some of the old resto threads & wondered if there's any news on the hs2? I'm looking fwd to seeing full bright-colour on it when decals applied (I love this machine, am trying to find a nice one for myself).

Still just prep on cabinet at this stage. I am hoping to get some primer on it over the next couple of weeks then paint. Will update asap.
-
Time for an update. Yes it has sat completely dormant for over 12 months now. Feeling guilty I have progressed slightly.
Cab has been prepared for the initial primer. Lots more sanding and fine filling to go. Sometimes its difficult to see just how much you have to do until the primer is on...

I've spent the last couple of days sanding, fine filling and priming etc. Finally got some colour down.
Yes, I went with a gloss black. It was a spur of the moment change, as I was planning to go just flat, but its only for me so don't care. I had forgotten just how much work goes into these and the last full rebuild I did I just purchased a new cab, already painted and decaled from Tim at HRP. In hindsight a much much easier option!
I managed to get rid of most of the timber grain and is a reasonable base for the decal. I could have gone down the sand / prime / sand / prime path probably another 4 times to achieve a glass finish but kinda pointless !@#
Anyhoo, a couple of pics with colour on. Bit of orange peel in the paint but I'll flatten it down prior to decals going on.

Small job now completed (big thanks to El_Timbo).
One of the issues with a NOS playfield is what holes are drilled and what isn't. I forgot all about the holes for the pop bumper brackets.

Decal day today. Its been that long I forgot how much fun !*! they are to put on.
Top tip I've learnt was from I think Robm here and his youtube video. The torch works a treat to help line everything up!

In the 12+ months the boards were out of the machine, cap C11 decided to finish up his/her duties with the driver board team and left.

For my own machines I normally replace them anyhow. But I actually think this is the first one which has let go for me.
It was sitting on a towel (upside down) in my pinball parts emporium (aka formal lounge room) and the only reason I noticed it was the puke stain on the towel, which is now a rag.
-
Great to see you on the pinball tools again. Looks amazing ^^^

Bit more progress today.... Other boards checked and mounted. I've gone with the Anypin NVRam on this one.

The driver board has had the caps and BR's replaced. There had been some previous rather rough work done so I'll double check the traces and jumper where necessary.

Moving into some new territory for now.
The vinyl on the side rails for the playfield was torn. I am not aware of any suitable way of replacing this, so they have been primed and painted in automotive 2K.
Fair bit of work in removing the vinyl and glue!

Next was the lamp board in the backbox.
This was also sanded back, primed and painted in 2k gloss white. I went with this as a bit of an experiment to see if it helps bring out the colours in the translight.
Time will tell once the loom and LED's are installed!

Looking good.
From personal experience, a coat of gloss white brightens up backbox incandescents 10 fold so with LEDs should make a big difference especially the wide angle types.
Either way good to paint over those lamp heat burn marks!
I have the warning decal and fuse list files if you need them. ^^^

man 2k everywhere, this really is a keeper. nice job mate

Hi Nino,
The combination of 2k white gloss and LED's is amazing for the translite. Well worth the pain of removing the loom and lamp holders. Will do the same for T2 as it will really pop.

Very nice Marty
I played this game in Coffs Harbour recently and loved it

The last mod is, I believe, the backing plate for the supercharger ramp sign. A must have on this game, for sure!

Was playing it heaps up until today. Unfortunately 3/4 of my collection left to fund a change in direction. Both it and Metallica have left he building off to be enjoyed in another collection

So which game has survived the cull?
I think I recall you once said CV was the best flowing game ever.....but I may be wrong?

Yes to CV. My all time favourite. All that's left is the T2 which is the wife's and I have a low boy arcade which I got from APR. That is it now ☹️
