Bally Midway Dungeons and Dragons Reconditioning

(1/4) > >>

Strangeways:
This project has been in and out the queue a couple times, but it needed to be done quickly as it has a date with a shipping container !

Objective

A standard reconditioning job. No special treatment such as cabinet or playfield work, so it will be done quickly.

Condition Report

The game is complete with topper (rare) and the game plays ok, but it very sloppy !

Cabinet - 8/10 - VERY good for its age. No real damage and artwork was unfaded and intact.
Playfield - 7/10 - Factory mylar that is staying put. Wear around unprotected areas.
Transllite - 7/10 - Faded, but in good condition
Electronics - 8/10 - Really nice condition. Original battery !

"Before" Pictures

Playfield pictures ;

Plastics held together by Silicone !

Mylar over the inserts - heat trapped between the mylar and the insert caused them to bubble and made them cloudy.

Very interesting playfield design. In-line drop targets and under the ramp is one of the ball locks. Really smart design.

The second ball lock area. Missing post and subsequent damage.

Skillshot ramp area with a cool plastic ramp return. This game is crammed with features ;

Third Flipper, that is used to hit the ball up the skillshot ramp area.

punkin:
What a shame that's going overseas, i'd be really interested in a nice one of those. Would go well with my Sorcerer.

onetaste:
Never seen the topper before. Interested to see how you go with the bubbled mylar over the insert, Nino

Strangeways:
Given this is the only Dungeons and Dragons I've done, and possibly the last, it was really interesting stripping the game. It was really complex and difficult as the rear of the playfield had two cutounts with a left timber ramp and right hand side raised playfield. They really packed this game with features - not uncommon during this period.

Left ramp into a blue plastic return ramp;

RHS raised playfield with in-line targets.

Playfield underside. Really packed in those coils in the top half !!

Note the cutout playfield on both corners..

Coils everywhere ! But all coils were good. Just sloppy mechs..

Mechs removed for cleaning - I've seen far worse, but these had a fair amount of lubricant.

Degreaser - Water based "Diggers" from Bunnings. Don't be fooled - this stuff is HARSH. You mix it with water.

First, the playfield is cleaned with "simple Green", then Novus 3, Novus 2 and then I bring out the polishing kit and buffing wheel. Just a matter of spending time going through each section. The mylar in staying in situ as it we are not looking at a playfield restoration.

Still has some really vibrant colors after the polishing..

Polished and waxed.

Strangeways:
Time to re-populate the playfield. Metal parts are polished and installed ;

Mini Playfields are done ! Back Panel stripped and cleaned. Polished up really good !

Drop Target assembly cleaned and reassembled ;

All the Pop Bumpers rebuilt ;
