ADVANCE button won't work

Alright this is strange. The Advance button inside the coin door on Flash won't work, so i can't change settings. I can go through the machine and track this problem down no worries, but, there might be a simple solution. Has this happened to anyone? Is it something simple?

Have you checked the toggle switch that changes the direction of the "advancing" through the options ?

Yeah i can't even get that far. I open the door, push the red advance button which should put the machine into options/test mode, if you know what i mean. Nothing happens when i push the button. The machine just stays in attract mode. Never happened before.

My brother is soon going to go through the whole machine and rebuild flippers (they are weak as crap ATM) and repair everything else on it, so we'll find the problem. I just thought that this might be something simple, that's all.

The game reset last night (does it sometimes, going to fix that too), but the advance button doews not work so i can't set it on free play. I can put credits on it though, but i can't set it up how i like.

My world cup i had to push the Button on the Cpu to boot it into audit mode maybe try that

Sounds like a connector issue - reseat the door connector - failing that, sounds like a switch matrix connector which are located on the RHS of the driver board.

Resets are common - will be the big cap on the power supply. Needs to be replaced with a 15,000 MFD cap, as the standard was 10,000MFD which is no good on a 3 flipper game. Interconnectors on the MPU/Driver board will need to be replaced.

Excellent thanks Strangeways, thanks ddstoys also. That's actually a big help as i'm going to go right through the Flash and get it up to scratch. If all's well might even get a new backglass.

One more question - Theres a Flash machine on youtube, and the lights behind the word Flash on the backglass flick on and off, like a lightning effect, kinda like the Haunted House backglass. Is this standard? It doesn't happen on mine.

Also, what's the best option for flippers kits with Flash?
-The new fully assembled one peice kit (i have these in my Gorgar), or,
-Just grab the same 1979 parts and rebuild?

The lamps you speak of are called "Flashers" - they are #455 Lamps available from either Sponsor. You just place them behind the word "FLASH"

Flipper rebuild kits ?

Buy a flipper rebuild kit - but - you will need parts to rebuild the upper flipper. What I did was buy a williams coil stop and plunger/link. There was also a requirement for an "advanced" EOS that was used to power the upper flipper.

The part number for the "advanced EOS" is "SW-2010-A ". You use this in the place of the normal EOS on the bottom RHS flipper. Move the "normal" EOS to the top RHS flipper.

Coil Stop - Use either part number A-7414 (original part number), or A-8143 - which is the equivalent.

Plunger and Link - Use either part number 02-3407 or C8230

I restored a Flash 12 months ago, and I keep 100's of pictures and I take notes on all my work. I use those notes to help others AND I may use them again in the future for another Flash (I do have another one in storage).
