target has trouble resetting?

a target on my em pinball has trouble resetting completely. on resetting, the target resets to about halfway up but then drops back down instead of coming all the way up and staying there. it is having trouble re-setting all the way up to its correct up position.

the plunger looks like it has loads of grease on it so i was thinking of dis-assembling the unit and cleaning the plunger as a starting point. but before i do this i thought i'd ask for some advice for other possible problems to look out for before i begin dis-assembling it?

in order to repair the target so that it resets correctly, what are other possible problems should i be looking for as to why the target won't reset properly?

any ideas?

Interesting problem. Rather than troubleshoot the exact issue - I'd be inclined to begin the repair with a disassemble and rebuild of the unit. The lube in the coil sleeve could be dry and attracted a lot of rubbish that is acting as "friction". If you have a spare coil sleeve - use it.

Other than a rebuild - Check the wires to the coil. Are they making good contact ?

lube is not required in the coil sleeve, they must run dry.
obvious to some but not all. @.@

It was easier for the Operators to drop oil into the plunger - keeps the 20c pieces going through the coin slot.
