Title: Grand Prix - Price check
Post by: RottyGuy on September 07, 2009, 06:06:37 PM
What is the average price for a Grand Prix pinball ? There doesn't seem to be too
many around to compare prices. Does anyone here own one ?

I had a list of three pins that i thought were my favourite and i was going to buy
one of the three, but that was until i played a Stern Grand Prix a few weeks ago.
Thought it was great. Loved the sound, the speed and even the look.

Just think they might be out of my price range from what i've seen so far.

I've generally seen them go for close to $5k.  I think playwise its not a bad machine at all.  Similar to HS2.

It gets some mixed reviews but if you play and you like it, then go for it..

The one on Ebay last week (which I got snipped at the last minute on) went for around $3400 which was cheap.

4 - 5K?

Speaking for myself. If i was going to outlay that kinda coin, i'd get a TSPP over a GP.

MarkC sold one in June (as is) for $2425 - his latest one (also as is) went for $3410 (both had been shopped 6 months prior).

I would expect to get one for $3k - $4k given those prices.

I know of one for sale - asking price $4500 - $5000

The one i played here in Brisbane has a asking price of $5500.
It's very nice, but a lot more than i would pay.

I would've thought for a late model like a GP they wouldn't need
too much refurbishment.

ajlaird  - I forgot all about that one. I bid on it myself.

I had a bid on Marks one last week, but i gave up because i was unsure
how much a new display would set me back, plus it was listed as one of
the hire machines. I would've been bidding without knowing when to stop.

Retropin -  is that price from a dealer or private sale ?

Mark  -  i'll keep a watch on your website

It's a good time to be buying, there's so many options out there.

Your're not wrong.  Lots of containers coming in, LOTS of parts.  Good news for everyone.

Set yourself a budget and keep looking - it will depend on if you want something that needs a bit of TLC or is great straight off the bat. If a machine has come straight off site it will need a good clean (say $30 for cleaner), new rubbers (around $35) and possibly replacement of a few plastics ($?). If the operator has been on the ball then it should be all working.

DMDs tend to cost around the $250 mark.

Personally, to date I have tended towards machines with good to very good condition playfields; saves a lot of work later. Plastics can be replaced cheaply enough, as can target decals; cabs can be redecalled if required; backglasses and translites can be found at a reasonable price, but replacement playfields are never cheap.

I have one in mint condition,

sorry not for sale, 100% keeper, I paid between $3,500 to $4,000 for mine, which is a fair price, as I've seen them sell for more, however very few here in australia, bloody great pin in my opinion

Sounds good.

As much as i like the game, i'm not prepared to pay the $5000-$5500 price mark that the two i've seen are asking.

I'm looking at a couple of other pins this week, just a shame i won't get the one i like the best.

Remember that this pinny was called nascar in the us.
I'm not 100% but i think i saw bike city warehouse advertise one on ebay that didn't sell for $5250 Can you really buy a simpsons pinball party for 5k i've looked and everyone has wanted 7k +
Title: Re: Grand Prix - Price check
Post by: markc on September 09, 2009, 07:55:48 AM

ebay is not always the best way to judge prices
sure we clear stock on there and to be honest we had 4 grand prix  at one stage
prices will be different from state to state and showroom to showroom
and from one month on ebay to the other

simpsons are funny  , still very much in demand , had held its price .  I know of other dealers paying 5k for them then to rebuild and sell

It looked VERY nice when I had a look on Sat Mark.  I suspect it would have finished up very clean.  Shame I couldn't have had a game on it!

Is the gameplay any different with the Nascar ROMS?

How have you found your GP, reliability wise, V8racefan ?

Has it been ok in general apart from the current problem ?
Title: Re: Grand Prix - Price check
Post by: v8racefan on September 17, 2009, 08:25:36 PM
very very reliable, the new sterns are very well built. This is the 1st and only stern pinball I've owned, and I must say I'm very pleased with both the quality, artwork and reliability.

The minor maintenance issue i have at the moment is with a micro switch, which do wear out from time to time, easy fix.

I just can't say anything bad about this pin, it ticks all the boxes for this pinhead. Hope this helps.

Just put the question to you because a local tech i had out to repair my Shadow a few weeks ago
said in his opinion i'd be better to avoid the late model pins and stick to the 90's Williams/Bally.

Everyone has their own opinion.

Personally i liked the GP i played a few weeks ago up here, but not worth $5500.

Decision time for me. I have the GP photos from Mark today.

It's always difficult to buy sight unseen, but it does look like it's come
up nice judging by the photos.

That's a great idea.

So who would be willing to do me a favour and take a look at the GP before i commit ? Anyone ?

Or does this come across as though i don't trust Marks description/photos ?  !@)

I will say that i bought a pinball from Mark 3 months ago and was happy enough.

I popped down today and had a quick look over the game.  Unfortunately I don't own any Stern pins so I've got no idea where to look re problems with PCB's etc...The playfield looks very clean, I didn't see any major (or minor) issues.  I didn't have time for a game, but I will be back in a couple of weeks so happy to give it a spin for you then.

Hey Marty,

How was the overall condition of the cabinet ? As far as scratches and dings go.

Thanks.

I didn't get my head around the whole thing (machines either side)...I don't remember any big 'tags' or dings, but I was mainly concentrating on the playfield sorry!  !@)  I'll double check it when I go back down.
