Title: Rebadged pin - NOT for the purists!!!
Post by: Retropin on June 22, 2010, 09:23:20 PM
I got asked to make some signage for a surf shop. Owner came into my shop to talk about it and noticed one of the restored pins i had in there.
he then asked if i could supply a pin for his shop which is opening June 25th. Disussions happened and what was going to be relatively simple turned into a pin that was to be rebadged to suit his shop. I had a WMS GULF STREAM lying around... cabinet had been repainted, although almost true to original, it stil had the hand painted signs all over it.. BG was shot.. PF was pretty good.
I got 4 weekends to get this pin rebadged and working faultlesly. In that time, my wife has been in hospital and so have i, plus im juggling a mountain of work.
Well - shes all done with a day to spare and i reckon she looks damn nice... owner will be pleased. She is set up to take $1 coins.
Hope you all like it and hope the purists dont take too much offence...

The theme of the pin ties in well with the surf shop, and although the PF is hardly changed, the whole thing blends better than i anticipated.
So what was done??

New BG
Newly stencilled
all new pop bumpers.. bodies, skirts etc
Repainted and decaled ( yes i decaled!) apron.. this was an old scratched up WMS apron i had.. the original Gulf Stream apron and shooter gauge i still have.
N-O-O-S-A   L-O-N-G-B-O-A-R-D-S inserted into the PF inserts.
Instruction card altered to suit new game,
Few lights moved in backbox
coin mech installed
New graphics on front door entries..
PF touched up and coated
Decal i used for the apron is a STERN graphic i had made up way back.. it was altered to fit WMS apron and of course include the shops logo.
Yet.. after all this has been done, its still possible to take her back to a GULF STREAM if need be.

Hope you all like it.. gets delivered on Thurs... the new signage is just as sweet!

Hey Gav,

Being an owner of one of these in much worse condition, i have to say you have done a fantastic job. Im not a fan of re-badging but i have to say this looks good and will serve the surf shop well. If i can offer constructive criticism, i think the only thing out of place is the red border on the backbox. I understand why it is red, just doesnt suit the backglass (my opinion only) Other than that, well done!

I think it is an awesome effort. Better to see a re badged pinball than a parted out machine.

The backglass looks much better than I thought. I like the theme and the artwork fits in with the genre.

Well done, mate !

Very very nice work mate.

Now if I had the cash I wouldn't mind a custom jobby like that sitting in my garage.  Really impressive stuff.  Hard to believe all that was achieved in just 4 weeks.   @@*

Looks pretty cool - I'd be chuffed if I were the owner.

A bit sad to see an historic  machine lost, but such a nice job and better than it being parted out or junked.

I recently realised that we can improve on original through doing my own resto.
I think you have done a fantastic job on this PIN and no doubt the owner will be rapt!

Awesome job

I am a purist and usually frown on these types of jobs but you have convinced me.

That PF looks CRISP! Usually WMS of this era are full of crazing and ball swirl.

Awesome job

That is a very slick job all round . . .  $%$
I'm curious to know what technique(s) and materials you employed to produce that way cool backglass/translite?
I'm about to do a custom Addams Family Values one for myself, any advice or pointers would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Max

I have to admit that although I spent 4 days in Noosa 2 weeks ago, the only time I found myself down Hastings St was at night, when Noosa Longboards was closed! However I did see it through the front window, and the neon sign out the front looks great! Next time i'll try harder to have a game!

Shame you didnt get a closer look... ive got to go back up there.. someone has broken the rollover button just above the flippers.. stumped how this happened   !@# !@#

Body corp are up in arms about the neon sign and it has to be completely removed.. apparently, not in the essence of the building..... thats not just turned off... thats a complete removal of the whole thing!!!

I reckon it looks awesome...

Shop next door ( same body corp) has neon lit illuminated letters... 2 doors up turquoise exposed neon.

I think someone has got a bit upset!

LOL!!!! Great to hear!!

Thay rang me a couple of days ago... machine wasnt resetting. Gave him a few tips and ive not heard back, so it seems they managed to sort it out themselves.
You know i gave a 12 month warranty on that machine??
