Title: Who uses tumblers here?
Post by: Maxprofits on October 01, 2009, 08:58:14 PM
Just wondering how many people on here use parts tumblers to help clean and polish pinball parts? I finally bit the bullet a while back and purchased one. I have been reallly happy with the results that I get from it. I can fit in parts up to the size of a shooter rod. I am going to try soaking really rusted parts in Diesel over night prior to tumbling as we used Diesel back on the farm to loosen up rust to hand tools and the such. I am going to try to post a pic of my tumbler, I haven't posted a pic before so I hope this works.

That's a popular tumbler.

I use a GRAF (re badged Berry) and I swear by it. I've used it on over 50 machines - and it keeps going. I'm thinking of buying a second.

Make sure you wash any dirt / grime / rust off the parts you want to tumble or your media will quickly absorb the dirt residue.

I used corn cob with Flitz (from the USA). I've tried Brasso and Novus 3 - no where near Flitz - and flitz takes half the time.

I always clean parts well before tumbleing, even use the wire wheel on the really bad parts.
I am still useing the media that came with the tumbler but I also have to some Frankford media that I purchased at the same time as the tumbler. I will have to check out Flitz as I am always trying to improve the way I do things.

Love my tumbler and only use the media dry... hardest part is finding all the little screws etc without tipping the whole lot out... and for chrome acorns... it is the best!

Chrome acorns come out fantastic, I dont think I will ever need to buy them again! To get the media out of all the nuts and screw heads I just put them into a sealable plastic container and shake for 30 seconds or so, much quicker then picking the media out.

I use a magnet - only leaves the media behind !

So what is the ballpark price on one of these?

Also the place to buy them?

Have been tossing up for at least 2 years about buying one  :D

Hey - that is what I was about to say!  Works a treat ^^^

Also, if I am doing bits (like acorn caps) that trap media, you can empty the media out of the tumbler, put the parts back in for a few minutes, and most of it gets shaken out (except out of phillips head screws ^.^)

cheers
Ian

I got mine from Western Firearms in Sydney. I had them post it out. About $155 plus postage from memory, which is pretty good. Make sure you get the 240Volt model.

Yep, same model great product.

I 'borrowed' a wire strainer from the kitchen, which the holes are just big enough for the media to fall through but screws, etc stay behind!

We need to talk either Mark or Greg into importing Flitz (additive) for us....From all reports it gives the best results with the media.

Im going to have to make a trip to the local gun shop after the great comments....  Last time i was in there they had a damn 50 caliber sniper rifle sitting on the counter and you can actually buy it if you get the permit i can just imagine the check boxes on that form.

Tick if you wish to use this for...

Political Assasinations
Shooting down enemy aircraft
Shooting down commercial air craft
Hunting Rabbits

A 50 Cal snipers rifle? I can't think what type of game you would hunt with this weapon, unless a light armoured vehcile can be considered "game".
"Hey Jethro, I went hunt'n on the weekend and I bagged me 3 ducks, 2 deer and the armour guard truck!" #*#

Given that you need a class A licence to buy a center fire rifle in Vic, I still don't know what type of animal you would be hunting down there with this beast. Rabbits, foxes and Roos dont need a 50 Cal bullet to kill. The more I think about it the more I ask myself "What the hell do you need a 50 Cal to kill?"
Maybe todays "Super animals".
Still cant think of an animal I need to punch a beer can size hole in to kill. Hmmmm, maybe my mother in law, maybe, but would be safer with a 105mm howitzer and even then I'd be calling in an air strike to make sure she was really done for.  <.>

I dont think you need it to kill anything but if you dont want to bury the remains it would be perfect  %.%

Our local boys may need to source the Flitz for us. I took a sticky beak this morning at a US site one of the lads mentioned in a previous post. No importing of liquids outside the US. As far as the 50 cal goes, near on standard for Canadian snipers in Afganistan. Don't quote me but I thnik the longest recorded confimed kill is just under 2.5 km's in the mountain region. Footage available on the world wide net if you look hard enough.

Here's how I sort mine:

I need a bigger/better magnet :)

Not everything I tumble is magnetic, so the strainer comes in nicely.

Or as Ric points out above - you could just be a very long way away... Assuming you can nail something at 2.5k's allowing for wind etc. etc. Hell of a shot!

If you pull an old computer hard drive apart you will find a good magnet to use.

I work in IT, and actually have a huge stack of drives I've been meaning to destroy when I had free time, why I hadn't thought of that, I don't know! Thanks for the idea!
